The very first article we ever wrote here on Big Shiny Robot! was about what Batman shows would work really well on television.
The show we desired most on television, all those years ago, was a show set in Gotham, revolving around the cops of the Gotham PD. What better way to introduce the world of Batman to the masses on television than through the world of a police procedural?
Well, although we’d like to think it was our idea, Deadline is reporting that FOX won a bidding war to bring to television a show called “Gotham,” which revolves around the early days of Commissioner Gordon’s career.
From Deadline:
In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and TheMentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Polce Department and is yet to meet Batman who will not be part of the series.
Personally, I think it might be a little short sighted to not include at least the specter of Batman on the show. Hopefully they’ll head to the Gotham Central comics for material and hire Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker to work on the show. And I wonder if they could get Bryan Cranston to reprise the role. His take on the character in the Batman: Year One cartoon was incredible. Which is another well I hope they mine.
This makes me very excited.
There’s no word on when this will hit our TVs, but we’ll just have to live with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. until this comes out.
