REVIEW: Star Wars: Legacy of the Force – Book 9

Invincible is the final book in the Legacy of the Force series of novels and I have to say this saga ended with a bang. Writing duties for the final chapter were left in the capable hands of Troy Denning (though I would have almost rather liked to have seen Karen Traviss helming the final part, because she seems to be able to elicit the most tears from me in reading these books).

This book is pretty much like the peak of the action in any Star Wars movie. There’s battles going on all over the place and it’s relentless. There’s lightsaber fencing, fighting showdowns, space battles, torture, revenge, true love, and it’s all peppered carefully through out the book from start to finish in a way that left me breathless.

The newly minted Sith lord, Darth Caedus, formerly Jacen Solo, has gone completely insane and drunk with power, hellbent on dominating the galaxy into peace on his terms. But his enemies (who are also his family) are probably the most powerful group of people in the universe. Arrayed against him are Luke Skyalker, Han and Leia Solo, and their children and all of the force on every world that they can bring to bear.

I hate using words like “roller-coaster” and “thrill-a-minute” (if “thrill-a-minute” even is a word) to describe the tone, tenor, and feel of a book like this, but those words are the two most prevalent I can think of when it comes to describing the conclusion to the Legacy of the Force series. This book kicked the door down on the action, adventure, and suspense and never closed it.

Ultimately, Denning is able to provide a conclusion to the series that feels natural, but maintains a kinetic energy that one would expect from Star Wars.

In case you’re worried about spoilers, I’d stop reading right now.

Okay, are they all gone?

And I found myself lamenting Jacen at the end.

I was completely wrong in my early predictions that Luke and Jaina would try to sway Jacen back to the good side. Jaina killed him. Pretty much in cold blood. In fact, Jacen decided to forgo his opportunity at a killing blow on his sister in an effort to save the life of his secret love and daughter. It was quite touching and made his death all that more tragic to me. There was good in him and Luke and Jaina were so bent on ending his existence that they didn’t even look for it. Sure, they said they did, but they didn’t look hard enough.

Having said that, that’s my only real problem with the book. I thought the Skywalkers and the Solos would have tried to convert him. I figured at the very least they would try.

But no.

Aside from that, this was a thoroughly satisfying end to a thoroughly satisfying series of books. I know that at the beginning of these reviews, I mentioned that I didn’t want to read them to start with, and now that I’ve finished, I’m incredibly pleased I made the choice to start.

My only problem is that I’ll need to feed the habit this book series created. And that might get time-consuming and expensive.
