Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” is a masterpiece of fiction, and all of us fans were incredibly disappointed when the project that was being developed for HBO was dropped earlier this year. HBO has set the bar for adapting books into TV series, and with their losing interest, I assumed that it was pretty much dead.
Not so much, it seems.
It was announced today that STARZ has stepped in and ordered a script for the series, and hopefully the writers will come up with something that the execs there will like.
While this is definitely good news, we shouldn’t get too excited just yet as the series hasn’t technically been greenlit. Basically, the STARZ wants to see a finished script before making the decision to order it to pilot or series, so there are a few more hurdles that it has to jump over before we will get the chance to actually see this.
Thankfully, none other than Bryan Fuller, the creator of “Hannibal”, is in charge of the script, and considering how amazing that show has been, this bodes well for “American Gods”. The one worrying thing is that Michael Green has been chosen as the showrunner. You’ll remember him from his work as co-writer on “Green Lantern”, so keep your fingers crossed that he’ll be more involved in the day-to-day aspects of the show and not the writing.
Neil Gaiman seems pretty happy about the arrangement, as he had this to say after the announcement was made:
“When you create something like “American Gods”, which attracts fans and obsessives and people who tattoo quotes from it on themselves or each other, and who all, tattooed or not, just care about it deeply, it’s really important to pick your team carefully: you don’t want to let the fans down, or the people who care and have been casting it online since the dawn of recorded history. What I love most about the team, who I trust to take it out to the world, is that they are the same kind of fanatics that “American Gods” has attracted since the start. I haven’t actually checked Bryan Fuller or Michael Green for quote tattoos, but I would not be surprised if they have them.”
“American Gods” is still too early in the creative process to predict where it will go, but it’s exciting to know that someone else has shown interest and wants to see what the writers can deliver. Here’s hoping we’ll finally get to see this amazing story play out on the small screen.
