Starting on May 21st many classic HBO series are going to be available on Amazon Prime. Shows like “The Wire” and “Deadwood” will have their entire series available while newer shows like “True Blood” and “Boardwalk Empire” will have just a few seasons available.
According to the release from HBO current shows like “Girls and “The Newsroom” will have their episodes available three years after airing on HBO. It seems like this is a great deal tighter on releases than many other networks it is also the first premium network to allow for such a big deal so it makes sense that it would be a bit different. HBO has stayed far away from offering their product on streaming services and HBO GO made it appear they would stay that way.
HBO looks to be keeping the biggest piece of the pie for themselves, “Game of Thrones” is nowhere to be seen on their press release. Along with that is “Sex and the City” and “Entourage” along with a few other smaller series including the quickly canceled “Luck.”
Amazon hasn’t been messing around recently. They’ve been going after bigger releases and I’m glad to see it. Grabbing shows like “Hannibal” and “Orphan Black” is a big step in fighting the Netflix juggernaut.
