Why are we talking about this? We’re not supposed to be talking about this.
Blame it on the social network, the word is out. Fight Club is getting a sequel.
Palahniuk is set to break Durden’s rules again after giving the comic book rights to Dark Horse Comics, which plans to make a 10-issue comic book series based on the bestseller, according to USA Today. Unlike the movie, this one is not going to be an adaptation of the first book but a sequel to both. Like the book, Palahniuk will write the ten-part series. Cameron Stewart, whose drawings appeared in Catwoman & Batman and Robin, will illustrate Fight Club 2.
Palahniuk described a part of the plot of the sequel:
“Fight Club 2 takes place alternately in the future and the past. It picks up a decade after the ending of his original book, where the protagonist is married to equally problematic Marla Singer and has a 9-year-old son named Junior, though the narrator is failing his son in the same way his dad failed him.”
He also added:
“Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that’s popped into his mind,”
Some are already speculating they’re turning Tyler into less of a manifestation of the Narrator’s ego, and more into a supernatural being who had simply possessed the Narrator’s body. I don’t feel this is a correct interpretation.
In case you didn’t understand it, every single person alive has a Tyler in them. Tyler is our egotistical, perfect self. You know how you wish you will do this, or how you would have done this? When you imagine yourself giving a speech charismatically, or when you fix all your problems, when you get the person you’re going after, when you’re the best version of yourself that you can be? That’s Tyler.
What Palahniuk means is that this borderline abstract concept — named Tyler for simplicity’s sake, for his character is an allegory — has been around for centuries for people. Actually, he’s been around since the dawn of time, since people started to think, even remotely. Every single person has a Tyler in them. Every single person since the dawn of humanity.
But why a sequel? And why now?
This doesn’t sound like a cash grab, just an artist following his muse. And as an artist, you have to allow yourself to fail. The quickest way to never doing anything is to constantly edit yourself and tell yourself no to every creative idea. You have to just follow your inspiration, and accept that sometimes you will fall on your face and that’s okay. Artists who try to play it safe and only be successful end up either not producing anything or the equivalent of easy listening music and Dan Brown books. I hope more authors and filmmakers look to comics as a vehicle for stories that studios won’t invest in.
I am intrigued about Palahniuk’s new insights and how his perspective has changed since release of the original novel/the movie. Definitely looking forward to this with an open mind and giving it a chance to amaze me. Superhero comics are masturbation. Fight Club comics, that’s the answer.
The 10-comic series will be published in May 2015, while Palahniuk’s next novel, Beautiful You, is published in October this year.
