Saturday’s Top Ten: SNES

Today we have my top 10 favorite games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

10. Super Mario RPG

Mario decided to get into the world of RPGs with this game. It introduced some really odd characters like the lovable cloud and a doll which knew magic. Plus you could get Bowser and Princess on your team as well. This game even made fun of the Power Rangers. Somehow they were able to keep the Mario worlds intact and add a RPG flavor which worked out quite well. The story was compelling and trying to get everything was tough and fun at the same time. There were certain things which you could only get once and if you didn’t do it then you couldn’t get it, and any time there are those things in a game it does get a little annoying. But overall this was a very fun game and yet another RPG I loved in my youth. I’ve played through it twice and I think I’d like to give it another try.

9. Super Mario World

When you beat the whole game your score would come out as 96 with a star next to it. Then there was also that level where you could get over 100 lives. Mario games like this were really fun. I got 96star about 3 or 4 times.

8. Kirby’s Dream Course

It’s like Golf but with Kirby as the ball. Oh wow this was a good thought for a game. Golfing with Kirby and getting certain super powers. This game was just as fun when I last played it six months ago as it was when it first came out. Kirby is such a good character and golfing with him was the perfect way to have his character. Endless fun in this one.

7. Secret Of Evermore

Most people would disagree with me putting this on my list and not Secret of Mana, but I didn’t play Mana nearly as much as I played Evermore. I owned this one and I thought it was a really interesting story which I still sometimes find myself thinking about. The system was great and having just a boy and his dog was even better, a changing dog depending on the world. The ending was a little lackluster because of the bazooka, but other then that it was a really fun game and one I enjoyed a whole lot.

6. ClayFighter

This game needs an explanation on this list further then I like it because I’m sure many to all of you will look at this and say “what?” This game is specifically on my list because of it’s impact to my overall gaming life. Right about the time the super nintendo came out, I had 8 games on the NES and my parents had no need to buy me a new gaming system. I was still a pre teenager then and didn’t have my own source of income. It was then that Blockbuster video created the “Video Game Championships”. Each individual Blockbuster had three games for you to play. NBA Jam, TMNT Fighters and Clayfighter. Whoever got the highest scores combined on all three games became that specific store’s champion and went on to the state competition. I played Clayfighter and found a cheap move with the character Tiny where you could kick the other character up to the other side of the screen and win with out getting hit. I scored so many points that when I finally went to NBA Jam I was told I would only need 8 points to win my blockbuster. I scored 18 to be safe and became my city’s Video Game Champion. My parents saw this and rewarded me with a super nintendo so I could practice the games. Unfortunately the state competition had my worst of the three games as the game of choice NBA Jam and I lost in the first round. However for making it to State I was rewarded with one of the three games for free. Clayfighter was the easy choice.

Because of this game I obtained a super nintendo and was able to play all the games on this list. This game was my gateway drug. And I love it for it.

5. Super Metroid

This game was one of the best action adventure type games of it’s era. It was a maze of wonder with so much to do and so much to explore. Trying to find everything and having to go back to places you had already been. It was such an adventure. I never really got into the original Metroid but this one was and is such a good game. Really well crafted and still fun and challenging now.

4. Earthbound

An RPG where you are some little kid with a yo-yo and you battle monsters and go back in time and all sorts of nonsense. This game was so quirky and random and it worked so incredibly well. The fighting system was lacking a bit but the story was phenomenal. Even the soundtrack was awesome. Take some time for those who played this one and think about the randomness of this game. There was so much to it. Incredibly intricate and divine.

3. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past

This is my favorite Zelda game of all time. This one was the one which brought me the most challenge and the most fun through out the years. Having two worlds which you had to go between to accomplish all the things you needed to was such a nice plot point that made things hard and yet solvable.

2. Chrono Trigger

The Super Nintendo was the king of RPGs. Traveling through time and having the things you do in the past affect the future is so incredibly cool. Also this game has many different endings depending on which path you take or different ways in which you can beat the game so it was fun even when you had played it a couple of times and you wanted to try for a different ending. Even the music was stellar in this game. I had Frog’s theme as a ringtone on my phone for 2 years and was so happy when it played. I’ve played through this game about 10 times and am getting a hankerin’ to play through it again.

1. Final Fantasy 6

Here it is, the best Super Nintendo game and one of the greatest games of all time. Final Fantasy 6 convinced me that video games could have story lines. This game didn’t just have one story line, it had a good story line for every character they had. Beside just that the overall story line was so incredibly epic. You gather your team, you fight within the world given, and just when you think the game is over, the world changes and you find you’re only halfway through the game and you need to go find all of your old team again. Finally ending the game with one of the most epic final bosses in creation. I have played through this game so many times and have gotten just as excited each time. There is just so much to do and all of it seems worthwhile to do. Best console game ever.

Agree or Disagree? What would be on your list?
