This morning Nintendo revealed their new console concept, Nintendo Switch, to the world. Slated to hit stores March of next year, Switch allows players to take their gaming experience with them everywhere. The console is a hybrid allowing for seamless play both at home and abroad.
When at home, Switch clicks into a dock that connects it to your television and allows the traditional at-home game play you’re used to. By sliding Switch out of the home dock it automatically transitions into portable mode. Nintendo’s new Joy-Con controllers can connect to Switch on the sides allowing for gameplay similar to previous Nintendo handheld devices. Or the controllers can remain disconnected and a kickstand employed to allow single or multiplayer gameplay.
Additionally, multiple Switch consoles can connect together for multiplayer gameplay anytime, anywhere.
Nintendo is really in a class of its own for gaming. Typically Nintendo doesn’t even attempt to complete with Microsoft of Sony in terms of computing and graphics power and instead focuses on innovative gameplay. Switch is a clear continuation of this thought process, the next evolution in their Wii console line combined with the massively popular Nintendo handhelds.
“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”
In a world where virtual reality promises to bring more of the real world into a virtual setting, Nintendo is committed to bringing our digital lives further into our real ones.
Nintendo Switch is set for release March 2017.
