GAMING: Dad Hacks Donkey Kong to Make Pauline the Hero

Yesterday Mike Mika posted a video on his youtube channel of his latest hack. After noticing how disappointed his daughter was that the hero of Donkey Kong was not the lady, he made this alteration:

This is the second time Mika has hacked a classic game for his daughter – some of you might remember that last year he hacked “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” and made Link a girl. Mika’s daughter is three, so they play games together and he reads on screen dialogue during gameplay. Frustrated with on the fly gender pronoun improv, he simply fixed it.

In an interview with Ars Technica after the Link hack, Mika said of his daughter “she’s not an NPC, and Dad’s favorite pastime shouldn’t treat girls like second-class citizens.” You can visit that article for a summary of his technique, as well as the info to download the hack for yourself, which Mika himself admits is “not user friendly.”
