CW’s newest dip into the DC ‘Verse is “Amazon,” which will deal with young Diana and her days on Themyscira. Casting rumors began circulating as soon as the show was announced, but it looks like there is officially a finalist in mind – Amy Manson.
Manson has quite an impressive BBC resume and has done a few straight to DVD titles, but is a relative unknown here in the states. She is beautiful and talented, and also undeniably Caucasian.
Since this isn’t 1950, do you think we can all stop pretending that Wonder Woman is white? Yes, Wonder Woman is all-American, but again: Since this isn’t 1950, can we please stop affirming that that means Caucasian? Wonder Woman is without any kind of doubt Mediterranean (she’s an AMAZON, for the love of Pete!), and if you can link me to any proof other than the color her skin has been painted for the last 72 years that she isn’t, I will eat my shoe.
But if we’re going to get right down to it, I don’t even care about remaining faithful to the ethnic descent of the character. I really just care that this is 2013 and 95% of all the people I see on television are starting to blend together. I want a Wonder Woman that every single little girl can watch and see something of herself – what she is, or what she wants to be – reflected from that television. So on that note, what about…
Zoe Kravitz?
Odette Annable?
Lauren London?
Emmanuelle Chriqui?
Or any countless number of Women of Color that deserve a chance to play one of America’s most recognized characters…
Don’t even get me started on the Justice League movie. If Monica Bellucci isn’t cast I will lay a mushroom cloud. And you can click here to purchase a copy of Lucy Knisley’s Wonder Women! print, which is used as the header image for this post.
