HyperZord watches TV: Sunday

Hi, I’m Hyperzord and I watch a lot of tv, and this week I’m going to talk about all the shows I’m watching right now on the day after they air and review the seasons so far.

We’ll start with FOX’s sunday night animation block.

The Simpsons — Now in it’s 22nd season this show has been going on forever. I watched a little bit of the 21st season and have watched two episodes of this season and they’re actually quite funny. It’s a much different show then it was in it’s early days and also different then it was in it’s very awful days. The trouble is, most people I know loved The Simpsons in it’s early days and felt betrayed when they became unfunny and so are unwilling to try the newer episodes. If you do try it remember it’s not the same but it is still quite funny.

Family Guy — Family Guy is now in it’s 9th season. Of the three shows done by MacFarlane it is still the best. If you’ve watched the 5-8th seasons then it’ll be no surprise what you’re getting into this season. The most recent episode had one of the greatest moments ever of Brian appearing on Real Time With Bill Maher. It was about a 6 minute clip and incredibly funny.

American Dad — a.k.a. The Stan and Roger show. If you like the characters of Stan and Roger then you’ll like this show because that’s all it is. I still watch it but it takes me a while in between viewings. It’s the second best of the MacFarlane shows. But if you only want to watch one Family Guy is still your best bet.

The Cleveland Show — Sigh. Every once in a while when I’ve run out of shows and I need a mindless comedy I’ll put in another episode of this show and remind myself why I stopped watching it in the first place. The third installment from the MacFarlane machine and clearly the one with the worst writers. I’m sure when The Simpsons stops airing Fox will tell MacFarlane to create another half hour and it’ll be worse then The Cleveland Show.

Now to the best Cartoon on Television

The Venture Brothers — Season 4 just ended and it was phenomenal. I am constantly amazed at the writing this show produces. If you haven’t started watching this show you need to get a hold of it and start watching. This is one show I have a hard time deleting in my DVR because I keep wanting to watch the episodes over again. There were two episodes which were especially great, one followed Hank as a Private detective in VB’s version of Noir. It was a perfect recreation of stereotypical Noir movies. The second episode followed Dean as he went off to New York for a summer internship. They’re taking Hank and Dean to very different places and I’m liking that quite a bit, giving them their own choices to deal with.

Reality TV

The Amazing Race — I watch some reality television, I admit it. Some of it is pretty good and some of it is pretty bad. The Amazing Race I enjoy but I know it’s among the worst when it comes to reality shows. The music is way too over dramatized and you really don’t care as much about the characters. Each season I swear I’m not going to watch it again and then when it comes around I end up watching it again. I don’t usually care who wins just often have some teams I hope don’t win, this season though I don’t really care which team wins, but I will still watch it. Alas.

Drama

Dexter — Season 4 ended amazingly. Season 1 is still my favorite season but season 4 comes in slightly lower then season 1. But now we have season 5, and usually like most shows I am content to watch them weekly, however this time around I have some friends with a big screen tv that are going to have two consecutive nights of just Dexter. So I haven’t actually seen any of the season so far, I will probably watch all of it within a week of it ending so stay tuned.

Boardwalk Empire — Unfortunately I have only been through two episodes of this fantastic series about the prohibition era in Atlantic City and starring the phenomenal Steve Buscemi. Last night was the season finale so I need to catch up but it has been renewed for a second season. This is one of those shows where it’s hard to multitask while watching it which is one reason why I haven’t been through it yet.

The Walking Dead — Finally we have The Walking Dead. The season finale was last night and I’m really quite impressed by this show. It was only 6 episodes and I’m sad we don’t have more and have to wait another 10 months for some more. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to cheat and read the comics now. The first episode was by far and away the best episode of the series so far. I am not a fan of horror but this show was able to take a concept which is quite foreign to me and relate it to me. The strength of this show is in it’s characters, it did seem to dip down a little bit for me once a lot of characters were introduced but now as they are dropping like flies the second season will be able to focus on some really good characters. The show received excellent ratings so unless they screw something up this show will be around for a long time.

With that, stay tuned for tomorrow.
