HBO Go, HBO’s streaming service, has been one of the most wanted features on Sony’s platforms ever since the Xbox got it awhile back. For those not familiar, HBO Go allows subscribers of the pay cable/satellite channel to stream, on demand, virtually every TV show that’s ever aired on the network along with hundreds of premium movies that can’t be found elsewhere on cable or Netflix.
Well, our wait is nearly over. Earlier today on the PlayStation blog, Sony announced that the service will finally be making its way to the PS3, with a PS4 app soon to follow. This is extremely welcome news to me, as I’m currently using my Chromecast to stream HBO, but since I have other needs for that HDMI port, I’m excited that I will be able to use my other devices that are already in daily use to accomplish the same thing. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t give us any hints at a release date, but one would have to assume it’s soon and quite possibly by the end of the month (for the PS3 at least).
As I said earlier, you have to be a subscriber to the network, which means you will still have to pony up the money for at least a basic cable or satellite subscription, so anyone hoping to get HBO a la carte will have to keep on waiting.
As soon as the app is available, I’ll be diving in to check out how it works on a PS3 as opposed to a Chromecast or on my computer, so keep your eye on BSR for a full review and my thoughts on it!
