The upcoming TV series “Gotham” was originally described as a crime drama about Commissioner Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City the famous hole of festering vermin that it is today…
But in an announcement by Fox chairman – Kevin Reilly, he tells us that the show will have all of the classic Batman villains along with a preteen Bruce Wayne.
As far as what Batman will look like, don’t expect to see Bruce Wayne put on the cape right away. Though Reilly says “we’re playing with [age] in casting,” he’ll be a “young boy; my guess would be somewhere around 12.” As to when Wayne puts on the cape? That will be at “the end of the series.”
I’m not the only one who fears the possibility of this turning into another “Smallville” but this does open up some interesting options like stories about Penguin and Killer Croc growing up with their deformities or Clayface’s eventual addiction to the putty that gives him his powers. I also hope there is a firm asterisk put on “all of the villains” seeing as characters like Joker never came into being until long after Gotham had its Knight clad in black armor.
Details are foggy (possibly even more foggy than before) but I hope they will be able to do something original with this series and make it more than just another Batman cash in.
