In the world of perfect casting, Felicia Day has been offered the role of the mad scientist who sends our snarky hero into space to be tortured by bad movies. Day already inhabits a special place in most of nerddom’s hearts, as does Mystery Science Theater 3000, the original riffing on bad movies show.
Now in phase 2 of a multi-million-dollar Kickstarter, Joel Hodgson has begun teasing out who will fill in his cavalcade of miscreants and riffers. With Day as the lead scientist, that leaves room for a henchman of some sort. Might we suggest Wil Wheaton?
Day will play Kinga Forrester, the offspring of Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and the granddaughter of Pearl (Mary Jo Pehl), the heir apparent to the experiments on board the Satellite of Love. This is extremely fun that they’re keeping with the mythos of the original show.
This casting was also born of a meeting at Salt Lake Comic Con. According to a post on Day’s Facebook page, “I watched MST3K with my brother religiously as a kid. The reason Joel thought of me for this was because I was in Salt Lake City at the con and I went up to get a picture with him because I wanted to rub it in my brother Ryon’s face. So thanks Ryon! You got me my dream job!” And, so. . . thanks to Dann Farr and Bryan Brandenburg and all the people who put SLCC together, too!
The Kickstarter currenty has raised over $2.7 million of the $5.5 million goal to make a full season of 12 episodes. With the traditional Turkey Day MST3K marathon, Hodgson and crew hope to reach their next milestone of $3.3 million, which will mean 6 new episodes. Hodgson has also promised new surprises at every milestone reached.
So, as you’re tucking into your feast, be thankful we have more MST3K on the way, with Felecia Day in tow. And if you don’t like this? Repeat to yourself, it’s just a show, I should really just relax.
