Pac Man & Mega Man ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ Trailer

So, here is some interesting “What the Hell?!” video game news for your Friday afternoon . . .

Capcom has announced that there will be some exclusive characters for the PS3 and Vita versions of the game, and among them are -oddly enough- Pac Man and Mega Man. For whatever reason Pac Man is rocking some sort of robot to facilitate some fighting skills, and if you picturing the Mega Man from all of his games and appearances in previous fighters in the past, you’re picturing the wrong one. No, Capcom decided to unleash the Mega Man from the box art of his first game in to the world. You know, the one where it was clear that the artist who created the box had obviously never even seen the game he was designing it for? Allow me to refresh your memory:

Yup. That one. Personally, I think it’s a pretty hilarious move on Capcom’s part, but it’s still just a “What the F*%&?!” sort of thing. You can check out the trailer below from IGN and sound off in the comments what you think!

Video Game Quick Hits 1/27/12

First things first, you really should check out a few stories that warranted their own BSR! articles this week.

First, Zombietron’s got rumors about Rocksteady (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City) making a Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles game. Next, Arse-bot has two articles with rumored specs on the next console from Microsoft here and here – which I’m still hearing “XBox Next” and “XBox 720” equally. Not to be outdone by Microsoft, we’ve also got a rumored release window for Nintendo’s Wii U. Finally, Arse-bot has the trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, a game I’m still not sure should even be happening.

As for the rest of the news:

As much as I hate to comment on rumors, this one led me to another discovery that made me laugh so I thought I would share that joy with everyone else. Square Enix has recently trademarked “Sleeping Dogs” for an upcoming game. The rumor is that this will be Kane & Lynch 3. The second game was subtitled “Dog Days” so there is a reason for the rumor. Also, IO Interactive is finishing up Hitman Absolution, so could easily be looking to move on, as evidenced by a job posting indicating they need co-op multiplayer people working on an unannounced third person project. Now why did this make me laugh? Because the theory is supported by the idea that a game release in 2013 will be needed to build on the hype of the movie next year, starring Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx. Maybe that’s not funny to anyone else, but I just can’t take Bruce Willis seriously anymore. The idea that he’s now making video game movies that just trade on his own cliched roles is kind of sad. The fact that he doesn’t see that it’s sad is humorous.

Square Enix has also trademarked Hitman: Sniper Challenge. With Absolution not even scheduled for release yet, what could this be? Is IO Interactive, or another Square Enix studio already working on the next game? Seems like an odd name choice for a retail title. Maybe it’s a downloadable title? I could also see it being a smaller, portable game – maybe 3DS, Vita, or iOS. Until they give us an official announcement it’s all guess work. But, if I were to lay wagers, I’d say that sounds like DLC for Absolution.

The Jak & Daxter HD Collection we’ve been hearing about for a few months has gotten a release date. The $40 trilogy will be hitting retail on February 7th. Each of three games will have sterescopic 3D support and its own platinum trophy (over 100 trophies in all).

So, you know when you’ll be returning to The Precursor Legacy, but when will you get your hands on Inversion? Not as soon as you thought. Namco Bandai’s third person gravity changer has been delayed. Formerly expected in February (actually, originally announced for 2010), it is now expected for March 27th. It looks interesting, but late-term delays tend to make me nervous. I’m definitely waiting for the review chatter before I purchase this one.

Square Enix has been clear that they plan a variety of DLC for Final Fantasy XIII-2, and we’re now seeing what they mean. In addition to their preorder costumes, weapons, and characters, a story pack featuring Lightning of FF XIII has also been leaked. Lightning will be recruitable only after defeating her in a colisseum arena battle and the DLC will provide “secret story epsiodes” according to Famitsu. What isn’t clear is whether Lightning herself is only available from buying the DLC, or if everyone can get her and need to buy the story add-on. Other colisseum matches are planned for additional DLC, including a variety of boss cameos from other games in the long-running series. Personally, I’m hoping to kick Kefka’s maniacally laughing ass again.

Say what you will about Activision, and I’ve said a lot, they are good at providing continued support for their games. And even better at making money by doing it. November’s Modern Warfare 3 has an extensive DLC plan, going all the way to September – just in time for you to buy the next Call of Duty. In addition to the two maps released this month, there are 18 more pieces of DLC coming in the next eight months. Of course, Elite subscribers get first crack, and XBox 360 has a timed exclusive, but here’s the rest of the schedule (and expect to pay a good amount for each piece):

  • February: New map
  • March: New map, two new Spec Ops missions
  • April: Two new maps
  • May: New map, new Spec Ops mission
  • June: New map, new Spec Ops Mission, new game mode
  • July: Two new maps
  • August: New map, new Spec Ops mission, new game mode
  • September: New map, new Spec Ops mission

Capcom has announced there will be a free, post-release addition to Street Fighter x Tekken (releasing March 6, 2012). The Tournament Support mode is designed to alleviate fan concerns about the gem system being introduced in this game. Assist and Boost gems can make up for character weakness and provide additional advantages in a match. Concerns that this will make competitive matches unfair or unbalanced, especially in tournaments has led Capcom to the patch, which will be available as soon after launch as possible. This seems like a reasonable concession, but I’m a little suprised they didn’t hold it off for the Ultra Quick Happy Sexy Incredible version they’ll be releasing in pieces over the next two years. This is Capcom after all.

With all of its financial troubles and shifting focus, THQ has released a new mission statement specifying the company’s goals. This comes after releasing a deal with Disney to publish several children’s titles in an effort to concentrate solely on “core game franchises.” You can read the full release here, but the essentials are that they want to focus on “digital initiatives” (DLC) for existing titles and develop only franchises with a strong financial record. From the standpoint of video games as art, this is a little sad. But THQ was never known for their artistic titles anyway. From a business and investment standpoint, it’s very solid. Hopefully this will see them get back on track and maybe open up their portfolio to risks again once they’ve become solidly profitable. After all, they have Patrice Desilets (creator of Assassin’s Creed) now, and it would be a shame to keep his creativity locked away in games featuring dildo swords. By the way, those solid franchises include Saints’ Row, UFC, WarHammer 40,000, and Darksiders, among others.

If you’ve been itching for more news on Sonic the Hedgehod 4: Episode 2… too bad. There isn’t any. At least, nothing official has come since the teaser trailer just before Christmas. However, the ESRB has rated the game E for Everyone. These ratings require finished product, so the game should have a release date very soon. Being a digital release, as opposed to retail, the game will probably be out on XBLA and PSN within a couple weeks of the announcement. Meaning, I’d expect this by the end of February.

More details are coming to light about post-launch Vita games as we get closer to the system releasing on February 22nd. One of the most interesting is Reality Fighters. As an augmented reality fighting game, it’s name is pretty uninspired. But what it’s actually capable of could be really great. One of the newest details about the game is the in-game “instructor” that teaches you to create a character, learn to fight, and then encourages you with post-match wisdom – whether you won or lost. When it comes to teaching martial arts many of us have a stereotypical sensei in mind, Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid films (not the new one that didn’t actually feature karate). Funny thing, the developers actually have that same stereotype in mind and have made him your in-game instructor. The likeness to the late Noriyuki “Pat” Morita is uncanny. Honestly, my first reaction to this was that it’s terribly inappropriate considering Morita’s death in 2005. But, as I read the PlayStation Blog‘s interview with Mitsuo Hirakawa, I came to accept it. Jim Ward, a veteran voice actor, is providing the dialog for Miyagi and I trust it’s been done in a respectful manner. We’ll know for sure when game releases on March 13th.

AT&T has made some adjustments to the 3G data plan for PS Vita. The lower side hasn’t changed, still $15 for 250MB. The bigger package though has seen an increase in data cap and cost. The cap has gone from 2GB to 3GB and the price went up to $30, only a five dollar increase. Both plans are still month by month with no contract, include access to AT&T’s 29,000+ wi-fi hotspots, and come with a free PSN game when joining.

Aliens: Colonial Marines, the upcoming sci-fi FPS from Gearbox is being delayed from Spring 2012 to Fall 2012. The usual reasons are given, it’s “a process of creativity and invention,” and the “goal is to make a great game, and we are prioritizing this goal over the previously targeted date.” Which is perfectly fine. Except Fall 2011 wasn’t that long ago and I remember the glut of top shelf games that are still clogging my gaming. Unless they expect this game to compete with the likes of the next Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed I expect we’ll see at least one more delay on it, sending it to Spring 2013.

If you’re looking to expand your Soul Calibur V experience (after it releases on January 31st), three pieces of DLC have been announced for release over the next month. These are only confirmed for Europe so far, but I don’t expect the US releases to be much different. The Launch Day pack, presumably coming on launch day, includes nine customization options (bikinis, wings, face paint) and the soundtracks from Soul Blade and Soul Calibur. February 14th will see another pack with nine more customizing items (breast plate, kimono, animal heads) and the soundtracks from Soul Calibur II and III. Nine more items (mask, face paint, camouflage, skull) along with the Soul Calibur IV and Soul Calibur: Broken Destinies soundtracks will be coming February 28th. European pricing is set for €1.99, which I also expect will be similar for North America.

This seems an odd week. The quantity of news isn’t really lacking, but the excitement level is pretty low. There’s just nothing to get pumped about. Oh well. Every week can’t be full of five star thrills. See you next Tuesday.

The Next Xbox to Play Blu-ray? Won’t Play Used Games? Will Ship With Kinect 2? Smaller Controllers?

The last two days or so the interwebs have been exploding with “Xbox 720” rumors, and today brings a whole new set to the table.

Kotaku is the latest to join the fray claiming that game industry sources have given them some insight to what the next generation of Xbox may hold. According to their sources, it’s rumored that the “Xbox 720” will be upgrading from DVD disc formats for their games to Blu-ray – a move Sony made from the get-go. They are also stating the the new console with ship with Kinect 2, which will be an upgrade from its predecessor containing an on-board prcessor allowing for better movement detection. Also on the rumored list is that Microsoft is looking into developing smaller controllers for this new system as well.

The biggest rumor to come from all of this though is that Microsoft may be implementing some sort of mechanism that would prevent users from playing pre-owned games.

It’s not clear if that means that the system wouldn’t play used games or how such a set-up would work. Obvious approaches—I’m theorizing here—like linking a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account could seemingly be foiled by used-game owners who would keep their system offline. My source wasn’t sure how Microsoft intended to implement any anti-used game system in the new machine.

A push in any way by Microsoft against used games would likely be cheered from publishers sick of seeing retailers like GameStop crow about their revenues from the sale of used games. But it could potentially anger consumers who rely on buying cheaply-sold used games or even pass games to relatives or friends.

Honestly, I’m not even sure how Microsoft would be able to implement something like this succesfully, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see gaming companies try this in the future – Microsoft or others. Obviously the industry would rather see you have to drop $60 on a new copy of the game instead of buying it used at a cheaper price in a scenario where they would get less money, if any at all. However this would burden the long-standing traditions we gamers have had of loaning games to each other; while the industry may see this as a negative I’d imagine a fair share of games have been purchased because someone borrowed a game from a friend and thought, “Hey, this is an awesome game, but I need to give it back to my buddy. I’ll go buy my own copy!”

It’s important to keep in mind that at this point, no matter who is saying they’ve heard “this and that” from “sources”, that this is all just rumor until Microsoft unveils their new console. So while the idea of their new system preventing us from playing pre-owned games somehow sounds pretty awful, the fact is no one knows for sure what the “Xbox 720” will have in store for consumers.

Thanks to BSR commenter “Alonso” for bringing this to our attention.

GAME TRAILER: ‘Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock’

It only took about a year for me to become a full-fledged Doctor Who fanatic, so when I heard there was a new downloadable game coming to consoles featuring the Eleventh Doctor and River Song I was pretty excited. Then, I learned it is only coming to Playstation and that stupid Vita, followed by PC at a later date and my XBox-owning self became a little disappointed.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, which is the first game in a planned trilogy, pits the good Doctor and River Song against a whole gallery of enemies, both old and new, in 2D platforming action. Check out the trailer:

I’m a bit perplexed by the trailer. I’m not sure what the “right” way to do a Doctor Who video game is, but the 2D side-scrolling, platforming option seems to be an odd choice. The Doctor and his companions have always done more than their fair share of running during their adventures, so I’d imagine any Doctor Who game would probably need to feature quite a bit of that – but still. The trailer certainly makes the game look exciting and this marriage of “retro” side-scrolling adventure and Doctor Who may turn out to be a great combination.

It will be interesting to see how this game plays and if Supermassive Games is able to successfuly capture that spirit of Doctor Who in a side-scroller. Despite my hesitations, I am looking forward to trying this game out because after all, it is The Doctor. However, being that it is only going to be on Playstation, this means I am going to have to show up at my girlfriend’s house with a case of beer and some Doritos and make convince her let me have a go at the game in her basement as I wear my Doctor Who t-shirt and a fez while haphazardly pointing my sonic screwdriver toy at her dog. I hope she makes me cupcakes – and yes, she knows how lucky she is.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will be available on the Playstation Network for the PS3 and Vita this March, available soon after on the PC.

“Xbox 720” to be Six Times More Powerful Than Xbox 360?

Nintendo fired the first shot in the wars of the next generation of consoles last year with little details and, frankly, a lot of confusion. Since this time both Sony and Microsoft have been pretty quiet with regards to what they have up their sleeves for the “Playsation 4” and “Xbox 720”, and probably will continue to be until they are ready to show off their new machines.

However, tech blogs have been buzzing as of late that the next generation of Xbox will be rocking an AMD 7000 series GPU, but IGN has “confirmed with their sources” that the next Xbox’s GPU will actually be the 6000 series.

… our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system’s GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD’s 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720’s raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360…

Their sources also noted that the “Xbox 720” will most likely see release around October or November of 2013, dashing the hopes of those who were hoping to see the next generation of consoles by the end of this year.

While I am extremely excited and curious to see what the next generation of consoles bring to the gaming world, I’m okay with waiting almost another two years to see an “Xbox 720” or a “Playstation 4” as developers are still getting a lot of mileage from these current consoles. As an Xbox owner, it’s almost hard to believe that as of November of this year the Xbox 360 will be 7 years old, especially with the quality of games that continue to come out year after year pushing the limits of the hardware more and more.

To my recollection this is the longest gap I’ve experienced between console releases, but I’d much rather Microsoft and Sony wait until the technology has made a big enough leap forward to release a console that is truly the “next generation” as opposed to releasing something that is only a small step forward that would be hard to invest in knowing that a few more years down the line something truly more powerful would be released (Sega 32X anyone?). It seems now is that time, far more powerful technology is available, and it’s sounding like 2013 may be the year our beloved Xbox 360’s and PS3’s see the curtain fall on their time to make way for the next generation.

RUMOR: Is Rocksteady Working on a TMNT Game?

Geekologie and Evil Avatar reported today that the rumor mill is buzzing that developer Rocksteady Studios (Batman: Arkham City, Arkham Asylum), is reportedly working on a TMNT title. Utilizing the same engine as Batman the rumors say you’ll be playing as all four turtles and will flashback to play as Splinter/Hamato Yoshi. Villains are rumored to be Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, Baxter Stockman (pre and post mutation), and of course Shredder/Oroku Saki.

Also of note the report says the game will be darker than you’d expect, and will include the Turtle Van and the Turtle Blimp. If you listen to the BigShinyPodcast you know we’re huge Turtles fans in this town. I hope this is more than a rumor, and that the game doesn’t suck. WIth Rocksteady at the wheel it could be an incredible title. Could you imagine playing through the scenarios put together in the current comic? Or even running through town fighting the foot clan using a combat system similar to Arkham Asylum/City? I’d be all over it. I tend to agree with Geekologie when they say, “The Turtles haven’t had a really amazing video game release since Turtles in Time, as far as I’m concerned.” I didn’t hate the multi-player cell-shaded Turtles that released 7 or so years ago for PS2/Cube but it was more of a mindless afterthought and could have been a DLC title on current gen. If this rumor holds true I can die happy.

Rocksteady has been contacted, and we’ll update you if there is any response

Video Game Quick Hits 1/24/12

I’m getting some conflicting dates, but it looks like Puddle is coming to PSN and XBLA January 31st (the conflict is one source telling me it’s available today). This is a physics based puzzle game first seen at the Independent Games Festival in 2010. Neko Entertainment picked up the title at the festival to develop further and it’s now being published by Konami. The basic concept is to move various liquids around the environment, similar to World of Goo or Mercury. Variety is key here though, as you may be moving rocket fuel through a blueprint, or a sip of water through the human body. This definitely has an awesome look to it and should be worth checking out. It’s a new IP though, so hopefully we’ll see a demo.

The announcement of Resident Evil 6 has everyone perking up. Seriously, this series is so loved that everyone is twitching to get the latest information on the newest release. Recent details on the multiplayer component are yet another reason to keep an eye on this sequel. Two player offline co-op will be included, as well as six player online co-op. There will also be an eight player online component, presumably some sort of competitive modes. I’m mostly intrigued by the couch co-op. I’ve loved that concept since I first got left behind in the waterfall level of Contra. Six player online co-op could be fun too, but I want to know more about the mechanics before I commit to what I presume will be a lengthy campaign.

It’s not much, but any excuse I can find to talk about Mass Effect 3 is definitely getting included in VGQH. One of the new characters being included in the third outing, James Vega, has gotten quite a bit of exposure as we lead up to it’s release on March 6th. What you won’t know by looking at him though, is that he’s being voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr. Like I said, it’s not much. Prinze, Jr. is most well known for his film career and personal relationship with Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers). This could actually change my enjoyment of the game, because whenever he speaks I’ll consciously know that Buffy hears Vega’s voice when she’s naked.

ESRB ratings leaks have provided steady fodder for VGQH for as long as I’ve been writing it. The latest? Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City were recently rated for release on PS3. This comes after the recent announcement of GTA V, as well as the tenth anniversary iOS release of GTA III. I can’t even begin to guess how many PS2s Rockstar sold with these two games. They’re both classics that should never be forgotten. This reveal does leave me with two questions. First, where is San Andreas? Second, are they coming as PSN releases, or an HD remake? My theory is that the answers to both of those questions are related. If it’s a PSN release, not a an HD remake, San Andreas may simply be too complex as it was so huge and so late in the PS2’s life-cycle. Also, if an HD remake were coming to retail, we probably would have heard about it long before the ESRB rated it. I actually still have the entire trilogy on PS2 discs, as well as the two Stories expansions, but that probably won’t stop me from rebuying them.

In preparation for its release on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, David Jaffe has taken some time to speak about Twisted Metal. Very little of major importance was said, but there are a few things to notice. An online pass will be required and is expected to take the now-familiar form of an included code with a new copy or a $10 transaction via PSN. According to Jaffe, “It wasn’t [his] call. It’s Sony’s game, and they funded it, and [he] respect[s] their decision.” Also rubbing Jaffe the wrong way is the day one patch expected. The “very, very, very small patch” has to do with collision damage. Jaffe has been very public about his dislike for patches, but does see the necessity in some cases. Beyond that initial patch, he says if they “ever touch Twisted Metal again, it’ll be either that it’s successful enough that there’s a big enough community that says ‘hey, we’d really like to get some of these in via patch’, or there are some really heinous bugs.” Finally, there is a demo planned, but details on when or what it will be were not disclosed.

On a somewhat related note, besides the online pass, there will be another code in your Twisted Metal case. This one will be redeemable on May 8th when Light Box Interactive’s Starhawk releases. This code will get you a free Sweet Tooth Outcast skin for Starhawk‘s multiplayer.

If all of that user-generated content hasn’t been enough to keep you playing Little Big Planet 2, their latest expansion may be bringing you back. I no longer have a copy, but I’m considering picking up a used version just to play with the latest Muppets. The premium level kit will run $6 and launches today. Included in the pack are a Rowlf costume, 5 Muppet-themed levels, “Attract O’ Gel” that lets Sackboy walk on walls, a new background, 13 new materials, 49 decorations, 4 objects, 18 audio and music objects, 219 stickers, and 7 additional trophies.

That concludes this week’s early edition of Video Game Quick Hits. There’ve been a bunch of rumors flying around about some possible sequels but I’ve chosen to ignore them for now. I’m actually expecting confirmation on two of them by Friday’s edition, so we’ll just have to wait and see. The biggest rumor probably won’t be confirmed until next month, assuming it’s true. I’ll give you a hint though. It’s the fourth game in the series. Or the sixth. Depends on how you look at it.

REVIEW: Pushmo 3DS

This colorful little puzzler has such a quirky way of dragging you in and filling your day. Built on the concept of pulling out blocks to create stairs, you spend your time figuring out ways to get to the top of colorful towers to rescue children. Yes folks, my worst enemy, those cute things that throw up, urinate and cry, and I spent my weekend trying to save them.

To give you a little background on my opposition to Pushmo at first, I declined 4 peoples invitations to buy the game. To explain the stupidity of my decision the game is $6.99, at that price the purchase should have been a no-brainer.I, however, let my digital snobbery get the best of me, doubting that any game is worth more than a couple of bucks. Finally after a few weeks of harassment I ponied up the dough my only regret is not having done it sooner. Now I spend my days trolling the internet for QR codes to solve and trying to create the perfect puzzle. This game is intuitive, imaginative and worth every penny. Hundreds of different and creative levels will keep you pushing from puzzle to puzzle, waiting to see what’s around the corner. Themed worlds ranging from training, to transportation, to dinosaurs helped keep the playthrough fresh. The hokey story is nothing more than a mechanism to force you to solve puzzles and I found myself blasting through that without reading, just to get to the next puzzle. Visually the art style is bright, cheery, and the 3d is exceptionally polished for a Virtual Console title. The controls are simple and easy: A to jump, B to grab, R to view the entire picture, and your d-pad moves you around. You can pick up the title and begin playing with minimal tutorial. The soundtrack isn’t something I’d blast in my car, but it fits the style of the game perfectly. If you haven’t played it on your 3DS you’re later to the game than I was, jump on board, pick this one up.

If you have already picked this one up email your QR code to thomas@bigshinyrobot.com, and we’ll post them on the site, we’d love to see what you folk have created.

The Laziest PS Vita Review You’ll Read

Last week I imported a Vita for my birthday in February. I thought hey, why not. I have a friend visiting who will ship me one. Here are my thoughts in a handy Millennial bullet point format.

• You probably shouldn’t import a Vita. There are no games and the PSN store for the US isn’t live yet. You’ll have to buy the few english games from the Asian PSN store, AFTER finding a place to buy Asian PSN cards. Plus it’s crazy expensive to ship it if you have a buddy grab one for you.
• It’s fuckin’ awesome. It’s like having a next gen console in your hand.
• Don’t buy Monster Radar. As awesome as it looks, it only works in Japan. In fact, make sure you get one of the few games that are English friendly.
• One day, you’ll wish you had more than 32Gigs of memory card space. You are able to download PS Vita games (which is cheaper) as well as UMD games (discounted if you own them) and other PSP/PSN games. I see a system getting filled pretty quickly.

If you have any other questions about it, ask me here and I’ll answer what I can.
