Video Game Quick Hits

We’re back again for the first quick hits of the new year. I’ve only got two stories worth mentioning, but the first one’s a doozy. Let’s get going:

The big news in gaming today is not the release of a new game or a new trailer for something hot. No, instead I tell you that the PS3 has been hacked all the way to the roots. This has been a long time coming and some minor hacks have surfaced over the last year or so that allowed users to run the machine in debug mode. But now, “Geo Hot” (the man who hacked the iPhone) has actually opened up the root key and published it online. The root key tells the machine what it can and can’t read. What does this mean? First, it’s not a simple security hack that Sony can fix with a firmware update. Second, the PS3 is now open for piracy and homebrew. The hackers, and myself, do not support game piracy. But homebrew? Sometimes that’s where you find the best innovations in technology. I’ll be keeping my ear to the ground on this one….

In other news, if you love Rock Sock Em Robots, Polly Pocket or other Mattel toys, you won’t have to wait for homebrew versions to play games based on the proprties. Mattel has forged a multi-year deal with THQ to bring many of its properties to Playstation Network. This isn’t entirely new. We’ve had Hot Wheels racing games in the past. But following the success of competitor LEGO’s franchise and retro titles (including the retro-styled Scott Pilgrim) what else can we see from Mattel? They do own He-Man. Please, please, please. I’m sure someone, not me, would be excited for more Barbie games. Fisher-Price, Monster High, The Singamajigs, Generator Rex, etc. I sense potential.

1st Quarter 2011 Games – Preorder Breakdown

Happy New Year Everybody! And welcome to 2011. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful, safe holiday season. I know you’ve all been playing your new video games, reading your new graphic novels, and watching old seasons of your favorite shows on their new DVD and Blu-Rays that you got for Christmas. But now that the holidays are over, we’re finally going to be getting games again.

It’ll be another week or two before things really start picking up, but there are exciting times ahead. So if you’ve already finished your Christmas games (and are sick of of getting pwned by xX13yogirlXx in Black Ops) then it’s time you put that gift card to work preordering something new. There’s lots of stuff ahead, these are just my highlights by week for the next three months:

DC Universe Online is available on January 11 for PC and PS3. If you like MMOs and/or DC Comics get this game! We’ve had at least two contributors from Big Shiny Robot involved with the beta and both gave it high praise (PS3 and PC). The collector’s edition comes with a Batman figure, a Geoff Johns penned comic book, art book, online comic Legends Issue #0 and some in-game weapons. Preorders from Amazon or GameStop will both net you a playable Batman in arena battles – plus the Amazonian Gauntlet (Amazon) or Joker’s Confetti Bomb (GameStop).

If that game is somehow not enough to keep you entranced for the rest of the year, January 18 is a huge day for PS3 owners. First, we finally get our shot at saving the universe as Commander Shepherd in Mass Effect 2. Plus, there’s LittleBigPlanet 2. The first game in this series had its flaws, but it was crazy good fun and ridiculously innovative. This iteration promises to expand on Sony’s “Play. Create. Share.” mentality in huge ways. The collector’s edition will include a 7″ plush Sackboy, book ends, 11 DLC costumes and 5 Sackboy avatars for PSN. Preorder bonus from GameStop is a Clu (Tron) costume and some additional animal costumes.

Next stop, January 25th. The big releases this week seem to be a couple of sequels to games I have yet to play: Two Worlds 2 and Dead Space 2. Both are available on PS3, XBox360 and PC. I’ve heard good things about the first Dead Space and I’ve read some comics from the universe that make it seem appealing. The collector’s edition includes a replica plasma cutter, soundtrack, lithograph and an in-game suit with weapon. Pre-order gets you a free copy of the downloadable game Dead Space: Ignition plus an in-game Rivet Gun at GameStop or Hacker Suit at Amazon.

February 1st looks pretty dull, unless you’re still playing Rock Band. Country Track Pack 2 is only $30. The Outdoor Living expansion for Sims 3 is also available.

Picking up speed again in the second week of February is Test Drive Unlimited 2. Actually, I know very little of this racing game, I just couldn’t resist the bad pun. My real excitement this week is You Don’t Know Jack. This irreverent trivia game has always been enjoyable for me since my nephew gave it to me for Christmas over a decade ago. I don’t know how well it will translate to console but I’m looking forward to screwing my neighbor once again.

If you’re even reading this, you probably don’t need me to tell you why you’re excited for February 15. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is highly anticipated for comics and fighting fans alike. Do yourself a favor and get the special edition for a steel case, combination comic and art book, two DLC characters (Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine) and free month’s subscription to Marvel digital comics. GameStop will give you some character decals (with move lists) from Fathead for preordering.

As much as I love great, long-running series I’m a big fan of new IPs entering the video game market. That’s why I’d like to plug Bulletstorm for February 22nd instead of Killzone 3. Ha, see what I did there? Actually, I’m more inclined to play Bulletstorm simply because I’m not a fan of FPS and this one seems both more attractive and more accessible. First, there’s an easy mode that’s designed just for people who don’t like the FPS genre but still want to experience the story. Second, the “leash” mechanic and trick shot kills just sound fun. What’s more, for a limited time, you get a free upgrade to the “limited” edition that gives you an extra weapon, boots, armor, experience points and upgraded leash. Neither of the big two seem to have a preorder bonus on this one.

Depending on your age and how long you’ve been a gamer, March 1st may be one of the happiest days of your gaming career. By that I mean the return of Twisted Metal! Actually, I may be jumping the gun on this because I don’t think it has a solid release date. GameStop has it listed as March 1, while Amazon has it for December 31 (which is their default for an unknown date in a particular year). Plenty of hype has been tossed at it coming this quarter as well as mentions of Spring 2011. So, even if the date is wrong, you’ll do well to watch for this one. I’m anxious to see what they can do with this on on PS3 hardware.

A more reliable date is March 8, 2011. That’s an important one if you’re an RPG fan as it sees the release of Dragon Age 2. This much-anticipated sequel will come in a “signature” edition, but it seems there’s nothing limited in the actual package. Huh? What you get with that version is download codes for a bonus mission and character, soundtrack, in-game weapons, and “additional downloadable items.” Does this seem like a weird limited edition to anyone else? Also odd, GameStop and Amazon don’t have a preorder offers up yet – but Amazon does say you’ll need to preorder the limited edition by 1/11/11.

March 15 th doesn’t look very special unless you’re excited about Yakuza 4. Instead, you should be looking ahead to Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Again, there is some confusion about the release date. I think Amazon has it as February 15 but my sources say it has been pushed back. Whenever it comes, it’s going to be fun. If you’ve been skipping the LEGO games because they’re “for kids” you’ve been missing some good times – plus, it’s Star Wars!!!

That pretty well wraps up first quarter. The last week does have a handful of games that could be exciting (Final Fantasy something or other for PSP and a WWE game) but I don’t tend to trust release dates that far ahead and they don’t sound that spectacular. Remember to check back each week for new releases. Also, Spring/Summer 2011 is going to be huge so be sure you don’t miss the 2nd quarter preorder breakdown.

Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money DLC Review

There aren’t many games that I like more then the Fallout series. I have played through Fallout New Vegas 3 times already including trying out the Hardcore mode. I finished this trial right as the new downloadable content became available, so I quickly purchased it and gave it a run through. Like many of the DLCs of Fallout 3, Dead Money, is it’s own story free from the rest of the game. When you download it a new radio signal can be heard through out the Mojave beckoning you to the Sierra Madre Casino. Then you find yourself on an adventure to unlock the mysteries of the Casino and help with a very big heist.

Dead Money uses the already well done Companion system and takes it to the next level as you find yourself having many different companions. The other cool thing about it is most of the characters you encounter have been referenced to already in the game, so you’ll find yourself quickly familiar with who is behind this scheme and why you’re helping them. Another thing it does is as you travel through the quests it starts referring to events which will take place in another upcoming DLC. I don’t remember any of Fallout 3’s DLCs doing such a thing which change the way people play in the future as clearly this quests is meant to be done before one of the future DLCs.

This DLC raises the level cap up to 35 and adds 7 level perks as well. It adds additional skill books and like other DLCs of the franchise adds weapons and more crafting abilities as well. This is a must have for any Fallout fan, and as it seems to be the beginning of the next story of Fallout. It has some very fun characters and an interesting story line. The only complaint I would have is that some of the mazes were a little tough and I found myself needing to save a lot more as I could die easier, but I quickly just learned that when I started to hear beeping that I should save my game.

Currently Dead Money costs 800 Microsoft Points on the XBOX 360. It took me about 9-10 hours of gameplay to finish it.

Convention Sketches #8

Welcome back to Convention Sketches!

Video Game Quick Hits

Seems like it’s been a while since I’ve had anything to report. Nothing spectacular today but we do have a few things of interest.

Ubisoft announced that they will have a new update to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood “coming soon.” It’s not a major update, just fixing a few glitches in both multiplayer and single player. I haven’t played it yet, but this one is definitely high in the GameQ. Seems like I might be doing myself a favor by waiting, let them fix the glitches then play the finished version.

Some time ago Valve announced they were delaying Portal 2 from February to April. I was expecting another delay, but I’m pleasantly surprised. Instead, they have confirmed it will release April 19, 2011. I am itching for this one.

There’s a new trailer for Yakuza 4 that showcases the character of Tanimura. Apparently he’s a good cop that turns to the dark side to track down his father’s killer. I haven’t touched this series since the first one’s poor handling turned me off of it years ago. I have heard that it’s much better now. Should I be adding it to the Q?

Refusing to go down without a fight, Dungeons and Dragons has a new game announced for the digital download market. I wasn’t aware this franchise even still existed. The new game, Daggerdale (produced by Bedlam Games), is an action-RPG featuring cooperative multiplayer both online and off. It is scheduled for PSN, PC and XBox Live in spring 2011.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is expanding in the form of two DLC packs. “Reverie” and “Resurrection” are set for early 2011 and both sound very interesting. “Reverie” sends you back to the castle as Gabriel with the intent of helping Laura, a servant of Carmilla. Taking place after the main game, “Resurrection” promises to help you make sense out of the ending. Something the game sorely needed.

That’s it for now. I’ll be back with anything new that I see. Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

Review: DC Universe Online Beta

Early last week subscribers to the PS3’s premium service, Playstation Plus, got full access to the beta for Sony Online Entertainments upcoming MMO DC Universe Online. I’ve been excited for this game since they announced it a couple of years ago and have been patiently waiting for it to come out. So what does this diehard DC fan think of the game so far? I like it!

-0&hd=1

As the video shows the story of the game starts off in the future with all the heroes fighting all the villains. Everyone ends up killing each other and Brainiac invades earth. We come to learn that Brainiac had been stealing powers from all the powered people in the DCU which caused both sides to lose. Jump to the “present” and you see Lex Luthor from the future talking Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman into helping him stop that future from happening. He then infects the world with nanobots that give normal people like you and me powers. That is where your character comes in. You play your own character that fights with the heroes or villains. When making your character you have your choice of 6 mentors. This choice determines where you start and what your opening line of quests are. For heroes you have your choice of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. And for Villains you choose between Lex Luthor, Joker, and Circe. After that you choose your main attacks. This ranges from energy hand blasts to dual pistols, to melee weapons. Next up is what kind of power set would you like to have. Do you want to wield the powers of Fire or Ice? Do you prefer Gadgets? Or how about Telekinesis? For my character I chose Ice as my power and a Staff as my weapon. I would say the combat in the game is a mixture of Phantasy Star Online and WoW. Your skills and powers are  hotlinked to certain keys (Holding L2 or R2 while pushing one of the 4 main buttons), while your weapon attacks are done mainly with the square button. As you progress you get new combos you can do with your weapon that are based on the timing of how you hit square.

I started off in Metropolis getting mission assignments from my mentor, Wonder Woman. The first quest line revolved around saving Zatanna from Felix Faust, then tracking down Faust and teaming with Zatanna to fight him. Most of the quest lines follow that loose guide. You save or assist a character, then you team up with that character to fight the bad guy. Eventually you can go up to the JLA Watchtower, which is also how you travel between Metropolis and Gotham. There are lots of side missions to do. My favorites are the “Wanted” or “Bounty” missions. When you hit certain levels bounties become available in the form of really strong characters that you usually have to be in a group to take on. I’ve faced Bizarro and Solomon Grundy. But the toughest one became available during my favorite quest line that I’ve played so far. I got to team up with the Green Lantern Corps against the Sinestro Corp in downtown Metropolis. The bounty came in the form of Arkillo, one of the stronger members of the Sinestro Corp.  For a comic geek like me, getting to do something like that was so much fun!

The level cap on the full game is going to be 30. Although for the beta it caps out at 20. While that may seem low for an MMO I have heard that a lot of the content in the game is “End Level” content. I am ok with this. Past MMO’s I have played, like WoW, I would get bored and lose interest in the game once I got to around level 30.

Now is that to say it is without fault? No, it isn’t. However it is a beta test, this is the phase of a game meant to work out all the little bugs. On the PS3 the biggest problem for me has been freezing issues where the whole console locks up. This issue is getting better though. On Thursday when I started playing the game it froze more times than I could keep track of, but by Saturday it only froze on me a couple of times. SOE seems to be getting a bunch of the problems worked through which gives me hope. Past that I haven’t had any big issues other than  some minor bugs, and most of those all seem to have been fixed already. An example would be checkpoints for quests not showing up, or areas for a quest being inaccessible to some people but not all.

Overall I think this is a fun and enjoyable game. Will this game be for everyone? No it won’t. Do you have to be well versed in DC continuity to enjoy it? No, you don’t. My roommate is not well versed in DC past knowing who the iconic characters are and he has had a good time. Its has also made him curious about other characters that he isn’t that familiar with. With the low level cap I don’t know how much “end game” content there actually will be, but  expect a report when I get the full game in January.  I’ve been excited for this game since it was announced two years ago and I’m even more pumped now.

When the full game does come out I’m thinking of starting a BSR “League” (DCUO’s equivalent of a guild) on the PS3. Is there anyone out there also planning on getting the game? And if so would you be interested in joining. Go to my forum post here to continue this discussion.

Pentagon Chooses PS3

Just how powerful is the processor in the Playstation 3? Powerful enough that the Pentagon has assembled a “Supercomputer” made up of 1,760 of them to study things like artificial-intelligence research. Here is the full story originally found at Time’s Swampland Blog.

The Pentagon has just launched a supercomputer assembled from 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3 processors. But military scientists who brought the computer online yesterday probably won’t be playing PS3 games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, God of War, or Killzone 3. The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate at Rome, N.Y., bolted the PS3 processors to other computer gear to create the $2 million Condor Cluster for artificial-intelligence research, synthetic-aperture-radar enhancement, image enhancement and pattern-recognition research. The gaming industry’s push toward more powerful computing consoles has made its gear attractive to military researchers, at 5 to 10 percent the cost of a military-developed system.

Video Game Quick Hits

Back again with some fast tidbits about upcoming games. Mostly did this today because of a Batman character I don’t recognize and I know I can count on our readers to enlighten me.

Let’s get to that one first. Apparently some people have been paying serious attention to the footage of Batman: Arkham City released at the VGAs over the weekend. Doing so has released a few pictures of someone many believe to be Calendar Man. Any news regarding this game is cool to me, but I’m about to lose some serious geek cred. Who the hell is Calendar Man?

Next up, Mortal Kombat. I already reported Kratos’ inclusion on PS3, but there is now a trailer making the circuit showing him in action. Also on PS3 will be stereoscopic 3D, if you’re into that sort of thing. And, just because this is how games come now, there are two special editions and some pre-order exclusives. Preordering at Gamestop (Scorpion), Best Buy (Sub-Zero) and Amazon (Reptile) will get you a classic costume with original fatality. Additional costume DLC is available with the Kollector’s edition, which also features Scorpion and Sub-Zero figurines as well as the prerequisite art book. If you love MK way too much, there will also be 20,000 Tournament Editions available; these will include a portable fight stick.

If you play games on XBox 360 or PC you already know cool Mass Effect 2 is. If you play on PS3, like me, you’ve been thinking you have to wait until January to experience it. Good news. There will be a demo available on PSN next week. I can’t even imagine how big it will be but it’s probably worth it if the game is as epic as I hear.

This next bit wants to be news, but there just isn’t enough to get too excited. Alan Pritchard from SEGA has told Game Informer that they do have plans to release a Dreamcast Collection. He just didn’t say when, what will be on the disc, or how much it will cost. Early rumors are February 2011 at a price of about $30.

That’s it for now. Please don’t hate me for not knowing Calendar Man. I’m hoping this is good news.

REVIEW: Super Mario All Stars Wii

Yesterday I treated myself to a little nostalgia and picked up my copy of Super Mario All Stars Wii. Believe it or not, this year is the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo has been doing a lot of fun releases this year to celebrate.

Super Mario All Stars originally was released in August of 1993. The game includes four of Mario’s greatest adventures:

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. : The Lost Levels

All of these games had been updated to the current technology of 16-bit. This meant reskinned Mario as well as more dynamic backgrounds. Some very small changes were made to the gameplay. For instance in Super Mario Bros., when Super Mario jumps into a brick block he continues moving upward as it’s demolished. In the original game Super Mario would bounce back downward. Another big change is a save feature. These four games had not been offered before with the ability to save your progress.

Super Mario Bros. : The Lost Levels has a particularly interesting back story. It is actually Japan’s version of Super Mario Bros. 2. The game remained very similar to Super Mario’s first outing and was more difficult. The game introduced poison mushrooms and wind gusts to give our favorite plumber a run for his money. Nintendo felt American audiences would be turned off by the similarity and difficulty, so it was never released in U.S. Instead, we got an adapted version of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (seen below). This game was watered down a bit as to not be too difficult for us simple minded Americans.

The newly released Wii collection of Super Mario Bros. All Stars is exactly the same as the SNES release. Almost to a fault. I was hoping Nintendo would take the time to make this classic compatible with my widescreen tv, but instead I ended up with two black bars on the left and right of the game. Though I can’t complain too much, this collection only set me back $30. Included in the box set is a booklet containing the history of all of Mario’s main titles, as well as a cd with all of the main themes from Mario’s games and some sound effects (to be easily converted to ringtones in my near future).

All in all I’d say this collection was worth the $30 bucks. And from what I hear they are very limited, so I’d get one now before they disappear.

VGA 2010 Winners Recap

This is pretty straightforward. Category, nominees, and winner. With a little unnecessary commentary from me. And I’ll be nice and get the big one out of the way first since that’s probably all you came to see.

Game of the Year:
Call of Duty: Black Ops
God of War III
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
If you’re surprised by this it clearly means you didn’t play it.

Studio of the Year:
Bioware
Blizzard Entertainment
Bungie Studios
Rockstar San Diego

Best Multiplayer:
Battle Field: Bad Company 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Halo: Reach
Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
Shouldn’t Starcraft get this automatically by not being the same kind of game as the other three?

Character of the Year:
Ezio from Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (won best-dressed character)
Kratos from God of War III (won biggest badass award)
John Marston from Red Dead Redemption
Sgt. Frank Woods from Call of Duty: Black Ops
I think Marston could have taken this but his moral compass was too bizarre.

Best XBox 360 Game:
Alan Wake
Fable III
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
I’m loving that 360’s best game is coming to PS3 next year.

Best PS3 Game:
God of War III
Heavy Rain
ModNation Racers
Red Dead Redemption
Two things. First, it’s telling that a category designed for exclusives has a nominee that’s not exclusive. Second, Heavy Rain was robbed!

Best Wii Game:
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Metroid: Other M
Super Mario Galaxy 2
When will Nintendo ever get good third-party games?

Best PC Game:
Fallout: New Vegas
Mass Effect 2
Sid Meier’s Civilization V
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Any other year, this goes to New Vegas. But StarCraft is legendary.

Best Handheld Game:
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Super Scribblenauts
I love my PSP, but I’m shocked a Nintendo title didn’t take this award. Actually, where is Angry Birds?

Best Shooter:
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Bioshock 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Halo: Reach

Best Action-Adventure Game:
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
God of War III
Red Dead Redemption
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Clearly this isn’t a dog show. How can Red Dead Redemption get best overall without winning its category?

Best RPG:
Fable III
Fallout: New Vegas
Final Fantasy XIII
Mass Effect 2
I won’t be playing Mass Effect 2 until next year on my console, but it must be a mighty game to take down my beloved New Vegas.

EA Sports MMA
Shaun White Skateboarding
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11
UFC Undisputed 2010

Best Team Sports Game:
FIFA 11

Rock Band 3

Best Song in a Game:
Basket Case – Green Day (Green Day: Rock Band)
Black Rain – Soundgarden (Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock)

Red Dead Redemption

Best Adapted Video Game:
Lego Harry Potter Years I-IV
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Transofrmers: War for Cybertron
This is a tough category. All of these have good arguments for winning but I am very pleased with the decision.

Best Performance by a Human Male:
Daniel Craig as James Bond (James Bond 007: Blood Stone)
Gary Oldman as Sergeant Reznov (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
John Cleese as Jasper (Fable III)
Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man (Mass Effect 2)
Nathan Fillion as Sergeant Edward Buck (Halo: Reach)
Neil Patrick Harris as Amazing Spider Man (Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions)

Best Performance by a Human Female:
Dame Judi Dench as M (James Bond 007: Bloodstone)
Danica Patrick as Danica Patrick (Blur)
Emanuelle Chriqui as The Numbers Lady (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

Jennifer Hale as Commander Shepard (Mass Effect 2)
Kristen Bell as Lucy Stillman (Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood)
Tricia Helfer as Sarah Kerrigan (StarCrad II: Wings of Liberty)
Yvonne Strahovski as Miranda Lawson (Mass Effect 2)
This is crap. Felicia Day should win for everything she does.

Best Downloadable Game:
Costume Quest
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Monday Night Combat
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Costume Quest just looked silly to me. But I must be wrong for it to beat Scott Pilgrim. Maybe I’ll pick it up.

Best DLC:
Bioshock 2: Minerva’s Den
Borderlands: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx
Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
RDR and Zombies. If this surprised you, punch yourself in the face. NOW!

Best Independent Game:
Joe Danger
Limbo
Super Meat Boy
The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom
Sony, please take notice. More independent games.

Most Anticipated Game of 2011:
Batman: Arkham City
Bioshock Infinite
Gears of War 3
Portal 2
Stiff competition, but I agree. Batman is a very close second.

There you have it folks. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Who else got robbed?
