The Weekly Nintendo Download 3/07!

Every Monday, Nintendo releases their downloadable games of the week, both on the Wii and on the DSi. While most Nintendo fans are probably hunting for Pokémon this week, there is still a lot of goodness to be had.

First up, is the selection of WiiWare

Heavy Fire: Black Arms (Teyon 1-2 Players, Rated T for Teen, 500 Wii Points): Set out on a dangerous campaign in South America in a continuation of the popular shooter Heavy Fire: Special Operations. As a Special Forces recruit, you will take part in the operation to stop an illegal arms trade. Heavy Fire gives players a classic arcade light-gun experience, enhanced with stunning graphics and exciting new features. Destroy the biggest weapon cartel, Fuerza de Voluntad, which is influential all over the continent. Team up with a friend and experience an immersive co-op mode. Enjoy dynamic minute-to-minute game play in various weather conditions and settings in the heart of a jungle. Smash objects and interact with them. Perform quick events and face your enemies with new powerful weapons. With plenty of weapon types and various vehicles at your disposal, put an end to the expansion of the paramilitary organization. Take full advantage of the Wii Remote™ controller and optional Wii Zapper™ accessory (sold separately).

This game is the second Heavy Fire game released for WiiWare, so if you’re a fan, it’s worth a shot for only 5 dollars.

Next on the docket is Soccer Bashi (demo version)

Soccer Bashi (demo version) (Icon Games Entertainment, 1-2 Players, Rated E for Everyone, 0 Wii Points, full version available for 500 Wii Points)
Experience soccer of the future. Destroy the defender blocks and smash the ball into the goal to win, but watch for the enemy defenders out to destroy you. A built-in game editor offers unlimited level design possibilities.Play through the 90 built-in game levels in several different play modes, including Arcade and Customizable Tournaments. Special level features include animated blocks, exploding blocks, shield blocks, invisible blocks and deadly 3D defender enemies. Face challenging end-of-zone bosses. Use the Level Editor to build your own levels – up to 100 user-created levels can be stored. Tournament Mode allows you to create your own unique tournaments using built-in game levels or your own levels. Special Power-Ups and Super Power-Ups including lasers, bombs, flaming power balls and multiple balls and bats can help (or hinder) you on your way to the goal.

A soccer game, eh? It looks like a Breakout/Arkanoid clone to me. That’s not a bad thing, though.

Hey, it’s Virtual Console! Perfect for a retro gamer like me.

Bomberman Hero (Nintendo 64, 1 Player, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points) Bomberman returns in his own full-on action game. One day, out of nowhere, a spaceship crash-lands on Planet Bomber. Journeying to the Peace Mountains to investigate, Bomberman encounters Pibot, the dazed robot pilot. According to Pibot, the evil Garaden Empire attacked Primus Star and kidnapped Princess Millian from Pibot’s escape ship. Hearing this, Bomberman vows to save the princess, even if he has to travel the length of the galaxy to do it. Bomberman is equipped with an infinite supply of bombs and can count on a variety of upgrades to aid him in his quest. His search for the princess takes him to five exciting planets, reuniting him with his old friend Louie and uncovering new items. Fly, swim, shoot and bomb your way through the galaxy and save Princess Millian.

It’s nice to see some N64 love on the Virtual Console, but this is like the black sheep of the Bomberman family, there’s no multiplayer! If you go into it as a 3D adventure rather than a multiplayer bombfest though, you’ll have a good time.

Finally, we have our selection of DSiWare.

G.G Series HORIZONTAL BAR (Genterprise Inc. 1 Player, Rated E for Everyone, 200 DSiPoints):  This is a new type of action game that will have you swinging and jumping from bar to bar, just like the parallel bars in gymnastics. The controls are simple. Grab onto a bar, add momentum to your swing by pressing left or right on the +Control Pad, then jump and spin to the next bar by pressing the A Button. Gauge the force of your swings and the timing of your jumps just right to cross the course in the fastest time possible. Do you have what it takes to be a star gymnast?

That seems like an interesting concept. I’ve never really seen many gymnastics games, so it’s hard to say if it’ll be any good, but it is worth a shot for 2 dollars.

Next up, GO Series Earth Saver, succinct and to the point with the title there.

GO Series EARTH SAVER (Gamebridge 1 Player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 DSi Points): A giant meteorite is headed straight for Earth. Land your spaceship on the meteorite and set explosives to break off small pieces so the rock breaks up in Earth’s atmosphere. Chunks of meteorite that are too big will smash into Earth, wiping out mankind. As an explosives expert, you can plant a series of bombs to create chain-reaction combos, easily blasting off chunks of rock the size of houses. You’ll also need to tackle the many strange alien life forms you encounter by either blowing them up or cunningly blasting around the piece of rock they’re standing on so they fall with the meteorite. Can you save Earth from obliteration and secure the future of mankind?

That looks like a fun time waster. I don’t know if I’d get it for a fiver, though.

Finally, we have Jelly Car 2, a port from the iOS.

JellyCar 2 (Disney Interactive 1 Player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 DSi Points): JellyCar 2, the hit driving platform game, is here and fully loaded with three game modes and more than 30 levels. Post high scores, best times and longest jumps in the Hall of Fame. With so much squishy goodness, you’ll want to drive JellyCar 2 all around town.In Classic mode, drive your squishy car and use your special abilities to drive through squishy worlds. In Factory mode, guide the falling parts into matching chutes, tap the levers to open different pathways and guide each part down the conveyor belts. In Long Jump mode, you’re going for distance and speed – watch out for objects that can slow you down, and look for objects that can help give you a boost!

I think that it is cool that this game got ported to the DS, but well… I can get it on my iPod for 99 cents.

In Stores This Week: Video Games

Before I get started on the upcoming releases this week I feel the need to remind you of Pokemon Black and White coming out yesterday. Not that most of you need reminding. But, I did see this week’s ad for Toys R Us and it’s good news for procrastinators. This week they’re offering buy one get one half off on ALL Nintendo DS games. That includes the two new Pokemon games. So if you didn’t get yours already, or thought you could only afford one of them, get to Toys R Us. Now for everything else:

Multi-Console:
Yoostar 2: In The Movies
Dragon Age 2
Major League Baseball 2K11

Playstation 3:
MLB 2011: The Show

Nintendo Wii:
The $1,000,000 Pyramid
Maximum Racing: GP Classic Racing
Maximum Racing: Drag & Stock
Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition (limited re-release)

Nintendo DS:
Jumpstart Deep Sea Escape
Petz Bunnyz Bunch
Atari’s Greatest Hits Volume 2
Beastly Frantic Foto

Sony PSP:
MLB 2011: The Show
Phantom Brave: Heroes of the Hermuda Triangle

Yoostar 2: In The Movies, if you don’t know, is a MOVE/Kinect enabled game that has you playing famous roles in famous films. Sort of like karaoke for movies. I’m waiting for reviews on it, but this seems like it could be the next Rock Band in my house.

For RPG fans, Dragon Age 2 seems to have everything going for it, sequel to one of the biggest RPGs of 2009, Bioware, multiple classes, crafting, etc.

You probably already have everything included in Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition two or three times over. But if you don’t, get it. Especially if you have kids or new gamers around that haven’t experienced the true roots of console gaming.

“SW: The Old Republic” Bounty Hunter Trailer

There are few things I am more excited about in this universe than the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. The more I read and see of this game the more I want to trade in various body parts to be able to play it. It’s been over a month since Bioware released their last trailer, and I, for one, was starting to get impatient.

Bioware isn’t disappointing drooling, hungry fans, with the release of trailers like this, which today show some gameplay and general badassery associated with the Bounty Hunter class.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XC9Yd415zs

For those not following the development of the game, Bounty Hunters will only play on the side of the Sith. (The Republic will have its own class of similarly skilled players,  Republic Troopers, which also look pretty bad-ass. By the way, if you want to see what Swankmotron would look like as a Republic Trooper, this trailer looks pretty close.)

I love the feeling that Bioware is giving us here- they’ve promised us that they want to give players the feeling of playing as an epic character. If you want to be Boba Fett, you can BE Boba Fett.  And for someone who has loved Boba Fett as long as… well, I can remember, this is amazing. Looks like you’ll have actual missions hunting down bounties, something I really wish had been a bigger part of Bioware’s earlier Knights of the Old Republic.

This game also has a big hill to climb- how in the world do you make playing as another class as fun and as balanced as playing against a Jedi/Sith? Well, I don’t want to say “Mission Accomplished” until I get to play the game, but you’ve made me believe at least Bounty Hunters can be formidable against Jedi. I hope we’ll see the same progression with the other classes. By the way, Bioware has also released class-specific trailers for Smugglers (Republic) and their counterparts Imperial Agents (Sith), as well as Sith Warriors and Jedi Knights.  So the only one’s we’re missing are the ones that could, in my opinion, be either the funnest classes to play or the absolute lamest, depending on their execution: Sith Inquisitors and Jedi Consulars. By the way, they’ll be the only classes with the fancy double-bladed lightsabers, but their focus will be more on force powers than melee battle. So, lets of elemental attacks, force lightning, etc.

For more on the Bounty Hunter class, go to the official website of SW:TOR. You can also find info on being other classes, but after what I’ve just seen. . . I don’t know if there’s another class I want to play more first.  Ok, maybe Jedi Consular. . . .

What do you all think? Bounty hunters? Do we need their scum?

Video Game Quick Hits 3/4/11

We’ve got kind of a lot of late week pieces of video game news – and some movie news that fits the category. Game Developers Conference 2011 means lots of stuff is getting out. The really big news won’t hit until E3 though.

A teaser trailer was brought to GDC ’11 from Tecmo and Team Ninja. It’s currently being called the “Gaiden Project” but this is obviously Ninja Gaiden 3. It shows very little, just Ryu Hayabusa drenched in blood starting to remove his mask before the camera cuts away. It then promises more information at this year’s E3. Stay tuned I guess.

Serious Sam is seriously back in Serious Sam 3: BFE, a prequel coming to consoles (and presumably PC) this summer. I can’t say I’m excited but I know some of you must be. I’ve never been a fan of FPS and this character seems like a low-rent version of Duke Nukem. Still, Fork Parker of Devolver Digital is excited that the proceeds from the game means his “wife is totally getting the tit job she’s been asking for.” While I may not be a fan of FPS, I do enjoy tits. Just remember Fork, the guy that pays for them never gets to play with them.

Because movies based on video games are always glorious wonders of the cinematic arts that means we need to make more of them. Right? The latest casualty in the cross media blitz is Devil May Cry. Capcom’s highly successful demon-slaying franchise has been optioned by Screen Gems. Kyle Ward, writer of 3 Rounds, has been tapped for the script. Incidentally, Ward is also tied to a script for the 2013 Kane & Lynch film.

Going the opposite direction, Battle: Los Angeles (coming to theaters March 11th) will also be getting a game treatment. Obviously a full disc release being announced this late in the game would be insane. Instead, the first person shooter will be available on XBLA, PSN, and Steam around the same time as the film release. Even as downloadable title, I really hope they’ve put some time and effort into making a quality game, not just quality profit.

Good news for any UK readers, with “The Da Vinci Disappearance” coming to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood as DLC next week, Ubisoft has announced a new SKU of the full game. Being called, simply, the Da Vinci Edition, it will include the main game and the DLC. It will not include the free Copernicus DLC for the PS3. If you don’t already own the game, might as well get this expanded edition. Unfortunately the announcement seems to apply only to the UK for now.

I’ve mentioned before how much I like the growing popularity of PSN/XBLA download titles. Zoo Entertainment is bringing arcade racing action to the consoles this summer with Fireburst. You’ll get 16 cars in four classes, each with a fire-based attack, across 14 tracks to play in single player, 4-player split screen or online multiplayer; all for only $10. If you need a cheap fix for your arcade racer addiction, this looks like it will get you through the summer.

Catherine has been making headlines in Asia as an upcoming “anxiety” game but we’ve heard little about it coming to North America. That has now changed and you can expect it stateside this summer. But what is it? That hasn’t been made very clear. According to Aram Jabbari, PR and Sales Manager for Atlus, “Catherine is an unprecedented exploration of the pleasures and horrors of love. As Vincent, a man recently succumbed to the irresistible beauty of the game’s titular diversion, players find themselves swept into a treacherous love triangle. Catherine’s core themes-those of free will, of the delicate nature of relationships and the choices we make within them, marry perfectly with the intense, terror-filled gameplay that serves to accurately reflect Vincent’s growing sense of anxiety. It is an experience wholly unlike any to come before it, and is certain to leave gamers talking and thinking about Vincent’s tribulations long after the credits have rolled.” How can I not be intrigued by this?

If you haven’t played inFamous, you missed one of the coolest games of 2009. If you aren’t excited for inFamous 2 you need to be slapped. Now there’s even more reason to get this game preordered, user-generated content! The game is latest in a string of PS3 exclusives, alongside Little Big Planet and ModNation Racers, to utilize this popular concept. After you’ve completed the main story you can build a platformer, mini games, race levels, stealth or boss missions, you name it. Build the perfect level and upload for others to play and rate. Get rated high enough and you’ll make Sucker Punch’s Featured Missions List. This news may have just moved inFamous 2 from my GameQ to my BuyQ.

Another open world franchise also has some news. THQ’s Saints Row: The Third has been officially announced. The third entry in the series sounds a bit different than the previous iterations. Rather than playing as a young tough on the make, the player is already the crime kingpin in Stillwater. This basically means no gofer missions like driving the important people around or delivering pizzas. It does make me wonder what kind of missions you will have that both fit the franchise and make you feel like the boss. I suppose I’ll be finding out when it releases “holiday 2011.” (Yeah right, expect a delay until next summer.)

Resistance 3‘s multiplayer has been throttled back from Fall of Man‘s 40-60 person matches. Instead the focus will be on the smaller 16 player deathmatch styles. There will also be a more fleshed out progression system with more unlockables earned for experience. Sounds like typical FPS multiplayer tools. Except I do like the concept of having Leapers explode out of your corpse to take revenge on your killer.

Speaking of corpses, time for the mandatory Mortal Kombat news. The demo will be available for Playstation Plus members on March 8th. PS3ers without a Plus membership can get it the following week on March 15th. No date has been announced for 360 but it probably won’t be long. The demo will feature playable characters Mileena, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Johnny Cage in the Living Forest and the Pit through the arcade ladder mode. One and two player modes will be available. Also announced for Mortal Kombat is a challenge tower with 300 steps. If you’ve been playing MK for a while you’re familiar with the “Test Your Might” challenges. This mode will expand on that, creating matches derived from an in-game “slot machine.”

RoboShinobi had huge praise for the recent Dead Island trailer that went viral. I wasn’t as into it, but it wasn’t bad. For those wanting to see more, I’ll close out today’s VGQH with some new screens:

Ocarina of Time 3D Screenshots

It’s getting really really hard to not want a 3DS for Ocarina of Time. At least it seems as though I have a little extra time to save up for it. All signs are pointing to this game being released in June. I’m crossing my fingers for a Legend of Zelda themed 3DS, similar the the DS version from a few years back.

Well, along with the new trailer for Skyward Sword released at the GDC Press Conference, some new screens for Ocarina of time 3DS were released. This game looks gorgeous. I really like the new art direction. Although, is it just me or does adult link seem shorter and stubbier than his N64 counterpart?

Thanks to Zelda Dungeon for posting these up.

TRAILER: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

A new trailer has been released for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and boy does it look pretty. It seems as though this game is shaping up to be everything we were hoping for in a Wii Zelda title. Lots of 1/1 sword fighting. I can’t wait for this game.

Video Game Quick Hits 3/1/11

Let’s start a new month with some fast gaming news.

Painkiller-Redemption is now available from DreamCatcher Games and JoWood Entertainment. The game is best categorized as a standalone sequel and is under $5.00 from plenty of PC download platforms. Redemption furthers the story of Daniel and Belial as they team up to battle more than 6000 enemies in all new maps (up to 1000 monsters per map) to end the conflict between heaven and hell.

The highly anticipated Mortal Kombat reboot has been effectively banned in Australia (sorry Pas). This is essentially due to the country’s rating system being unable to categorize a game as unfit for children but acceptable for adults. Yes, Mortal Kombat is graphic and bloody, but that’s not a reason that responsible adults should not be able to play the game. According to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s official press statement, they “understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classification in Australia.” I applaud the stance. It would be unfortunate for all gamers if the studios chose instead to kowtow to Australia’s lowest common denominator regulations and remove the adult elements.

If you’re getting excited for The Da Vinci Disappearance DLC coming for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood next week you’ll be pleased to hear the details. The DLC is available for $10 on March 8, 2011. It adds eight new missions, two new locations, and ten new achievements/trophies to the single player experience; as well as a new map, four new characters, and two new match types to the multiplayer.

In an attempt to make someone give a shit, it appears Activision is teasing a hoax announcement of Modern Warfare 3. Actually I don’t know that for sure, but several credible video game news sources were sent bloody dogtags with a link to findmakarov.com. It’s basically a countdown clock that should reach zero sometime Wednesday morning. Activision says they have nothing to say about the next Call of Duty and that any reports to the contrary are a hoax. Sounds like marketing to me, but we’ll know for sure tomorrow.

Speaking of hoaxes, it looks like Rockstar is at it again with their spoof websites. While they all take you to what appears to be a simple Domain Tools website builder the following sites have been registered to Rockstar Games: lifeinvader.com, cashfordeaddreams.com, sixfiguretemps.com, hammersteinfaust.com, and stoppayingyourmortgage.net. Could this somehow be connected to Grand Theft Auto V recently being listed on Gamestop’s reward member website? Knowing Rockstar’s history, I’d count on it.

THQ has released a new trailer for WWE All Stars. While the video itself isn’t special, it does give out some more roster information. HBK, Stone Cold, Curt “Mr. Perfect” Hennig, “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka (a childhood favorite of mine), CM Punk, Undertaker, Kane, The Miz, and Drew McIntyre all now seem to confirmed for the game. In addition, Ted DiBiase Jr. and Sr., Dusty and Cody Rhodes, Hawk and Animal (LoD!!!), Big Boss Man, Jerry Lawler, Chris Jericho, and Mark Henry will be coming as DLC after release.

And that completes your early week quick hits. Come back Friday for more from the rest of the week.

REVIEW: X Modz Repair Service

Friday February 25, 2011 – 5:45 PM

Alright, long week of freelance and BSR updates. Time to hunker down for the evening and beat Dead Space 2. I cannot wait to finish this game! Pop open the disc drive to swap Halo: Reach for Dead Space 2. “What’s that Pixel? You want to fetch? Sorry girl, not right now… whoa whoa -”

My overzealous Corgi (seen below pretending she isn’t usually plotting my demise) decided to pass between myself and my Xbox, slamming into the open tray. BAM. CRACK. POP. Shit. The disc drive isn’t so much coming out in the perpendicular fashion at is a cold 45.

Friday February 25, 2011 – 6:15 PM

Google don’t fail me now. Let’s look up how I can pop open this Xbox Slim. Can’t be too complicated. I bet the drive has just been bumped off the gears. On second thought… This looks like I can do some serious damage. Back to Google.

Alright, let’s try… Xbox 360 Repair Utah. First entry, no dice. Second entry… not the friendliest of fellas. Let’s check out their Google Reviews. Wait… who is this third listing on the Google Reviews, X Modz. Prices range from $25 to a maximum of $90. Wow, really? That’s half as much as the other guys. The’ve got a FaceBook as well, let’s see what it has to say. Lifetime warranty. All work fully guaranteed. They have the official equipment and licenses.

Friday February 25, 2011 – 6:25 PM

Let’s give X Modz a call, maybe I’ll luck out and he can look over it tomorrow. At the latest I can hand it off to him Monday. James answers, super nice guy. I explain my situation and he looks up the cost to fix my Slim, $30 bucks if I don’t need a new drive. SWEET. He even let’s me know I can bring it by this evening if I like. I may be back to pwnin’ n00bs faster than I thought.

Friday February 25, 2011 – 7:00 PM

Jame’s shop is located in Draper. Pretty easy to find actually, its just a few miles away from the Ikea. As he opens the door he gladly takes my crippled Xbox. Within fifteen minutes he has it opened up, repaired and hooked up to his iMac for a test drive. This guy definitely knows his stuff, and he was really great to interact with. While he was working on my Xbox he showed me some consoles that had red ringed and how he fixes them. He’s even talked me into getting my old console repaired.

Friday February 25, 2011 – 7:45 PM

Pwnin’ some n00bs on Halo: Reach. Thank God for X Modz. I highly recommend them. Very fast and professional, as well as affordable and reliable. They also take care of out of state customers, make sure to contact him if you are in need of some console repairs.

KILLZONE: EXTRACTION Live Action Movie!

Okay- so the title was only a little misleading… This isn’t an official Killzone movie- but its bad ass nonetheless. Kudos to Clinton Jones ‘aka’ Pwnisher on this stylish well put together- and “clean” fan film-

Alpha Team has 4 minutes to get of Helghan! They split up into 2 groups, one upstairs, and one downstairs. While making their way through the trenches, EVAC is shot down, and Alpha Team is forced to make it to safe zone before the air strike hits!

What do you guys think?
