THROWBACK TOY REVIEW: Cyber Spawn

 CyberSpawn
Cyber Spawn 2 Series 28 Spawn Regenerated
Scale: 6 in.
McFarlane Toys
www.spawn.com

If Ronnie Coleman was a robot in futuristic football fighting gear!!!

When I was a kid playing with my Robocop (no that’s not a dildo). I never imagined that I’d ever see something robo-like ever again that kicked so much ass! Of course, Cyber Spawn 2 doesn’t have a desert eagle; he has metallic glitter on crimson metal – score!!!

The figure stands about 6 in. tall, is fully pose able , with several points of articulation . From head to toe it has cables and lots of sharp metal plates worked into the armor, acting like blades for protection (see: porcupine). There is good painting and design on the vents, claws, and metal pieces. Cyber Spawn is airbrushed with great details – including the bottoms of the figures foot. Personally, mine has one coloring flaw: The lights by the femur are yellow on the right leg and neon yellow on the left. It’s only evident that neon works better. Damn you assembly line at McFarlane Toys!

Sad to say but I really do love this figure, as well as the other six in the series. Definitely pick up Series 28 if you’re a Spawn fan (Zombietron) or action figure collector alike. Great details and interesting/unique characters, shit stories (see: Todd McFarlane’s comics).

You can pick up a Cyber Spawn 2 figure at Amazon.com

Go Go Gadget

Caught this over on gizmodo.com today and I want it. I will turn it into a drinking game and it will be glorious.

Ive got no other details for you really, this was at a toy convention and I’m sure will be on shelves soon.

A Vintage Missile-Firing Boba Fett?

 Boba-Fett-Redemption-1

The official website of Star Wars (starwars.com) has been putting up updates from Toy Fair and perhaps the most important has just come to my attention.

It seems as though they’re manufacturing a vintage Boba Fett action figure, but this time the rocket-firing mechanism is actually going to work.  Back in 1979, this Boba Fett toy was a mail-away and advertised as going to be able to fire a missile from his jetpack.  But between the time those ads went out and the toys were manufactured, that was decided to be a serious safety concern.

This action figure has been a long fabled myth for 30 years.

Until now.

At Toy Fair, Hasbro unveiled this figure that they’ll be releasing.

As far as other Boba Fett merchandise, they’ve also revealed a helmet for kids and Boba Fett’s blaster.

Why all this increased excitement in Boba Fett?  Well, aside from being the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett will be making an appearance on the Clone Wars TV show.

Bif! Bang! Pow! To Create Venture Brother’s Toys

This awesome tidbit came down the news pipeline to us at BSR today!! The company Bif! Bang! Pow! Will be creating bobble heads, action figures, and vehicles!!

Bif Bang Pow! and Cartoon Network Enterprises, the licensing and merchandising arm of Adult Swim, blast off for action with today’s partnership announcement that will bring to market a brand-new line of toys based on the popular animated series The Venture Bros. One of the most highly sought after product lines from Adult Swim’s library, The Venture Bros. collection from Big Bang Pow! will feature an array of articulated action figures, bobble heads, and vehicles, each embodying that distinctive action-comedy mix that has become synonymous with the series.

First to be released from the line is a series of 7-inch scale resin bobble heads targeted for spring 2010. Action figures are scheduled to hit the market in the summer of 2010. These fully-articulated figures will include the series most popular and recognizable characters including Dr. Venture, The Monarch, Brock Samson, Hank & Dean Venture and more. Several exclusives are also in the works. More detailed information about the products will be made available in the coming weeks.

“We’ve been courting The Venture Brothers for quite some time now, and we’re beyond excited to finally bring fans what they want: a range of fully articulated action figures and bobble heads,” said Jason Lenzi, CEO of Bif Bang Pow! “With the ever-expanding cast of characters in the Venture universe, the possibilities are endless. And, as always with Bif Bang Pow!, expect the unexpected!”

“A toy line based on The Venture Bros. has been a long time coming but we now have the ideal partner on board to bring these characters to life,” said Christina Miller, senior vice president, CNE. “With their distinct style and love for the series, the team at Bif Bang Pow! has created an impressive line that will excite our fans and meet their discerning tastes.”

The Venture Bros. creator Jackson Publick, who has been working closely with Bif Bang Pow! on the planning and creation of the toy line, adds, “Finally. It’s about time someone made some action figures based on the show. This is going to be great!”

This bot will have to buy the Doctor Venture, it’s the closest I’ll get to a J.G. Thirlwell figure.

Big Shiny Robot!s Holiday Gift Guide!

Just because we’re robots doesn’t mean that we don’t like to receive gifts for the holidays. And since we’re all geeks, we thought it would be great to put together a list of things you could get the other geeks in your life. The lists of the editors, Swank-Mo-tron and Kill-tacular-tron, were included in IN Magazine’s issue featuring gift guides from prominent Utah Celebrities, which we apparently are.

We asked all of our robots to participate and here is what we came up with:

Swank-mo-tron

Kill-tacular-tron

  • Ghostbusters Minimates: Who doesn’t want some pint sized boys in grey? Plenty of great variants to track down and clutter their cubicle with.
  • #include <beer.h>: For the coding geek in your life. Even if you don’t get it, they will.
  • ThinkGeek Halo Warthog: Time to wreak havoc and terrorize your pets. Steer clear of plasma grenades, Spartans.
  • NES USB Controller: Play all those ROMS cluttering up your hard drive in style. Now you’re playing with power.
  • 6 or 12 inch Ghostbusters Figures: Seriously the coolest Ghostbusters collectible to come out in a long while. The 12 inch comes with working trap and lights. Heat ’em up!

More-than-a-sex-machine

  • Asterios Polyp: Easily the best graphic novel of the year, David Mazzucchelli’s decade-in-the-making formalist masterpiece about an aging architect trying to rebuild his shambled life is expertly constructed and densely layered, inviting multiple readings to fully appreciate, and, like Watchmen and Jimmy Corrigan before it, raises the bar on which future graphic novels are measured.
  • Chronic City: Like a hipster version of Seinfeld, Jonathan Lethem’s new novel is about, well, nothing in particular, really, but rather a free-floating, hilarious look at New York through the eyes of a handful of characters, ranging from a former child sitcom star to an underemployed cultural critic, and what it lacks in likeable characters and plot, it more than makes up for in sharp observation and satirical wit.
  • The City & The City: China Mieville’s hard-boiled detective novel set in two cities, which coexist in the same physical location, but are separated only by their citizens’ refusal to perceive the other, is one of the cleverest and most metaphorically rich pieces of speculative fiction of this year, and a near-perfect blend of literary value and pure entertainment.
  • Criminal: The Deluxe Edition: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ modern noir series is arguably the best periodical that Marvel is publishing at the moment, and this new hardcover edition complies the first three loosely-related storylines of down-on-their-luck men and women and the highly readable things they do for sex, money and revenge.
  • The Criterion Collection on Blu-ray: Film lovers tend to associate this series of important classic and contemporary films (usually presented with the highest technical quality and equally great supplements) with quality, and so far, every one of their Blu-ray releases has more than lived up to the expectations of cinema aficionados. Amazon currently has most of them on sale (for up to 57% off).
  • Death Note Manga Box Set: The manga on which the currently airing anime series is based is crack in comic book form, as the creators take their admittedly absurd concepts, such as the titular notebook, which gives its wielder the power to kill anyone he desires, and weave them into some of the most suspenseful plotlines ever seen in comics. Contains all thirteen volumes in one convenient package.
  • Momitsu BDP-899 Region Free Blu-ray DVD Player: The only Blu-ray player that is region-free out of the box, meaning it allows its users the freedom to choose and view Blu-rays and DVDs from anywhere in the world, and not solely based on the region in which they happen to reside (and where a particular film might be completely unavailable, or only offered in an unsatisfactory edition/presentation/transfer). Seriously a must for any lover of foreign cinema.
  • However, since a lot of online retailers have recently discontinued the sale of the Momitsu, for reasons on which we can only speculate, another alternative is the expensive, but otherwise incredible OPPO BDP-83, which plays everything from Blu-ray and DVD to DVDA and SACD at the highest possible audio and video quality, and which can be turned region-free with one easy software update.
  • The Prisoner: The Complete Series on Blu-ray: The complete collection of the cult British TV series following the adventures of a former secret agent held captive in a highly secured village intent on breaking him and/or driving him insane is a lovingly put-together and stunningly re-mastered testament to the enduring vision of one of the strangest and most unique television shows in history (whose influence is still felt in series like Lost and Twin Peaks), and well worth every penny.
  • The Year of the Flood: A Novel: The long-awaited new novel by critical darling Margaret Atwood is a visionary dystopic masterpiece, following a small community of survivors of a global environmental catastrophe, and the most disturbing post-apocalyptic novel since Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

Brusr-Bot

  • Fight Club on Blu-ray: Everyone wanted to join one, most still do, and now you can watch people get smacked around in awesome Blu-Ray clarity, what more needs to be said?
  • Amazon $50 Gift Card: Nothing says “I love you” like giving a gift card. Don’t know what to get someone? Are you the type who just returns most of what people give you so you can use all the new big fund to just buy what you REALLY wanted? Gift cards are the way to go, nobody wants to carry cash around anymore, grandma, I’d rather keep it all on plastic.
  • The Kindle: Come on, every geek wants the technology that everyone is gushing about, you don’t want to be left in the cold with a serious case of blue balls like you did after prom night. Even with the pricey tag, make your whole family pool in for one mega gift instead of a whole bunch of things you only half wanted.
  • Star Wars: Run R2D2 Hoodie: Pointless hoodies are awesome. If it’s a Star Wars reference? Even better.
  • Serenity, Vol 1: Those Left Behind: I was late to jump onto the Firefly bandwagon, about 5 years after the show was canceled late. Even though I missed the televised run, I still caught on with DVD releases of the series and the Serenity movie. Every fan of the series would love the books that keep our dreams of being a Space Cowboy alive. Sorry Han Solo, I’m a Browncoat now.

Before going into the list, I’d like to turn the figurative microphone around and ask you a few questions about your potential loved ones. (I say “potential” because a bad Christmas gift can change the tides, like the phase of the moon.)

Question #1: How much do you know about said “receiver”?

Answer: The safe gift. The safest gift of the season this year is the Star Trek 3 disk Blu-ray set. An easy out, because this movie greatly appeals to everyone, men and women alike. Everyone except hardcore Star Trek fans, and we all know that they don’t have friends to buy them gifts.

Question #2: How well do you actually know them?

Answer: The cheap gift, and if that’s what your looking for than this is the best week to look, Amazon is having tons of Black Friday sales, my favorite of which is Space Balls on Blu-ray for $8.99.

Question #3: Are you purchasing with someone with a low attention span?

Answer: The fun but ultimately button smashing video game, The newly released God of War: Collection will do nicely, and when was the last time you were able to buy a new PS3 game for less than forty bucks?

Question #4: Low attention span, but you don’t want them to slip into the pit-fall that is video game? (Not Pit-fall the video game.)

Answer: No problem, Inglourious Basterds (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray] and/or Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut [Blu-ray] which would be wise to buy fast, because it’s nearly half off.

Question #5: Do you actually love the person?

Answer: If so, the answer is clear, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

A must-have for Anime collectors, toy hedz, & anyone who is looking to spice-up their displays.

Unlike most Anime figures, this female character is fully-clothed & in actual costume/dress from the popular series. What stands out most is her plug suit’s glowing-like properties. It’s white at first glance, but a closer look reveals perfectly placed blasted gloss. Her face & hair don’t take a back seat to this either. Adequate air-brushing to her hair enhances a look of innocence on her face.

The packaging is by far the most “display friendly” I’ve seen. Clear-cubed packaged with minimal graphics, centered, & posed. To make it even better, Rei’s also got a clear plastic shell around (but not touching) her more than “perfect” shape.

This figure will easily stand out from the rest of your collection & you will be very satisfied with your new addition.

REVIEW: A Worm With an Attitude… and a Really BIG Gun!

 DSC00408

In the spirit of the recent iPhone app., I bring you 1994 Shiny Entertainment, Inc.’s Earthworm Jim action figure. You all owned this at one time, most of you played with it in the shower. For a really long time!

The figure stands in your standard graphic cardboard with original character drawings. The plastic surrounding displays the character, his weapons, and snotty friend.

Jim’s suit looks ordinary at best and continues with the classic big upper body and skinny legs. His hands are pre molded to hold weapons or jack off… but unless you display him-forget either! The “spring loaded real firing Jim head” is enough to make the purchase worthwhile. Who doesn’t want a head that, if lost, completely defeats the purpose?!

His weaponry, if painted right, would have been awesome! Instead we have all the accessories painted in one boring red. They hardly gave details to the “plasma gun”. “Jim’s really big crow croaking gun” is molded really well but like everything else falls far with bad coloring. As for Snott, well, see previous.

Yes, these are individually numbered for you crazy collectors and EWJ junkies alike. I just don’t know many people who would waste time & effort on collecting this very average series of toys. Oh wait, that would be uh… umm… me.

GREEN LANTERN #43

 gl43

Geoff Johns (W)

Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy (A)

Green Lantern #43 is the “Official” prologue to Blackest Night (as Blackest Night #0 takes place after this issue) and the perfect jumping on point. Beginning with a brief update/ history lesson via narration by the Oan Guardian known as Scar, we’re shown the events leading into the “Blackest Night” starting all the way back to when the Manhunters first malfunctioned and wiped out 99.9% of life in Sector 666.

Post Infinite Crisis (though beginning back in Green Lantern: Rebirth), William Hand has been retconned and tweaked by Geoff Johns into a much more interesting and compelling character than he was previously. I won’t go into the “Original” origin here, especially since this issue gives all you need to know about Hand, without prior baggage.

Johns and Mahnke create a terrifying vision of the death obsessed and possibly necrophiliac William Hand, AKA the Black Hand. Little Billy was born into a family who’s business is that of the dead, as his father’s specific profession is a mortician, with the family living in a cemetery and their house a funeral home. William becomes death obsessed from a young age, dabbling in taxidermy and ultimately pushing it too far once the missing family dog is finally found.

With the disturbing discovery, he’s sent into therapy with a number of psychologists whom all attempt to cure him of his disturbed nature. Unfortunately the only thing he learns from these encounters is how to sound “normal and cured” with specific responses in regards to the treatments and inquiries.

As the black sheep of the family, he’s still involved in the family business and ends up encountering the alien fugitive from Sector 666, Atrocitus of the Five Inversions. Persued by the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Sinestro, William is saved by their intervention and flees with Atrocitus’ cosmic divining rod (capable of draining Green Lantern Rings). The recap is interesting despite being a replay from issues #33 and #34 (found in the Green Lantern: Secret Origin TPB) as it gives insight towards Hand’s perspective.

Further fleshing out previous backstory (also showing additional scenes from prior Green Lantern issues), Hand walks through the graveyard of the family home as he hears the “voice” whispering of the dead, and those who’ve escaped “death”.

Without revealing or spoiling the rest of the issue, I can say it’s fairly grizzly and is the final pay-off in the wait and anticipation building towards next weeks Blackest Night #1. If you’ve not read Green Lantern or plan on picking up Blackest Night due to it being an “event” book, definitely pick this issue up, you wont be disappointed!

And in addition to Blackest Night comics, San Diego Comic Con exclusive Blackest Night figures by DC Direct/ Graphitti Designs, Inc.

WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 (OF 12)

 wc1

Various Writers and artists (see dccomics.com for full list)

WOW was this AWESOME! WOW!

Wednesday Comics is fantastic! Frankly the only flaw I could find in it was the fact I can’t wait till next week to read the next issue!

Just to get it out of the way, Wednesday Comics is bold, in both format and being the fourth weekly from DC. The huge formant is fantastic, but may be off putting to fans of the standard comic size and paper. Though it’s not the slick glossy paper most fans are use to, the heavy newsprint used is great in how it both allows the large format and retain bright, brilliant colors that don’t rub off on your fingers (or silly putty if so inclined). Also, the weekly format is one many fans have been burned out or burned on, though this being 12 issues over as many weeks I don’t think allow a real gripe on the latter. As for the content it’s self? It’s all fantastic!

All the stories start very well and make excellent use of the format. They hit the ground running and drop you right into the story. I’d initially expected some of the strips to be weak, but much to my surprise, they all were really good in my opinion.

Now, with this being weekly for the remaining 11 issues, I’m going to try in an unbiased fashion to spotlight the best single strip week to week. True, the stories are serial in nature, but I’ll be looking at what really grabs me issue to issue.

For the first issue, it was really hard but I ended up selecting one. My tastes automatically leaned towards Gaiman and Allred’s Metamorpho strip (due to my love of those creators, the character, and the story going back to his “Swinging 60’s” roots). I own a handful of original Metamorpho comics (from both his early first appearances in Brave & the Bold, to his title series). I’m also a huge fan of Mike Allred and fond of Neil Gaiman’s writing as well. So rather than go with the obvious, I ended up settling on this instead.

Kamandi is also a character I’ve a fondness for (though again going back to the original stuff by Jack Kirby in the 70’s). However, the way Dave Gibbons and Ryan Sook (who’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite artists) utilize the single-page-strip format is something to behold. Riffing on Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant strips, the story is told in narration in the art of the panel, rather than traditional word balloons. It fits perfectly into the world of Kamandi and also complements the artwork immensely.

Also, an honorary mention and shout out for The Flash, by Karl Kerschl and Brenden Fletcher, who split their Flash page into two strips flowing into each other. The first strip Flash Comics (with “The Flash”), features Barry Allen fighting Gorilla Grodd while worrying about losing Iris. Moving into the second strip “Iris West”, shows a distraught Iris leaving Barry due to his tendency to be consistently and constantly late. I love how it’s set up as two strips in one!

If you’re still on the fence about picking it up or managed to pass it over while “waiting for the trade”, I suggest you pick this up NOW, as most likely when reprinted will not actually maintain the huge format. Plus it’s just fun to read! After the trip to my local comic shop (http://www.blackcat-comics.com/), my friend Dan and I sat down at my house, each with our own copies pouring over the pages! Get a friend or two and go get some Wednesday Comics!

Super Cheap Comics and a FREE Nick Fury Action Figure

If you haven’t heard my sterling endorsements of Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited in the past, allow me to reiterate…

A subscription costs a mere $10 for a single month or $4.99 a month if you spring for an annual subscription like I’ve done twice already. (after your first year runs out, they’ll beg you to renew and offer totally decent discounts)

At the very least, I read 3-5 comics a week online, or $9-$15 worth.  The most I’ve read in a week has probably been around 25-30 comics, or $75-$90 worth – in a week mind you, not a month.  So you do the math and tell me if its worth it.

One hot oil bath, some ice cold whiskey and soda and nearly unlimited supply of Marvel comics is the holy trinity if you ask this robot.  It’s like a week long vacation or a dump that makes you feel ten years younger.  And to top it all off, Marvel is tossing in a FREE Nick Fury 3 3/4 inch action Marvel Universe figure with your subscription. Though this line is still painfully Thorless, it’s still the coolest action figure line I’ve seen marvel put out to date and I highy recommend picking them up. Read more about them here and see check out www.marvel.com/nickfury for details on how to cash in on this sweet deal.
