In Memoriam: Steve Jobs

Yesterday, the world got a little less bright as it was announced that Steve Jobs had passed away.

Some knew of Steve Jobs as the man who would take to the stage every year in a pair of jeans and sneakers with a black turtleneck to reveal the latest innovative gadget Apple had come up with. To others though, he was more than that. He was someone we looked up to, but knew we would never meet. A visionary who dared to be innovative and change the world of computers and consumer electronics, and touched the lives of millions of people. Jobs didn’t just bring us Pixar, computers, iPods, iPhones and iPads – he brought us new ways to experience the world and stay connected in ways we never knew were possible.

When the news broke last night, it affected me more than I thought. Steve Jobs was a man who was fired from his own company he co-founded, only to come roaring back years later to lead that same company to the top of the consumer electronics world and become the face of innovation, focusing on the consumer experience. I spent a lot of time last night reading articles on his life, personal stories from those who met him, and watching the documentary The Pixar Story. Being a life-long consumer of Apple products, it was my way of paying tribute to the man who made such an impact on this world during his all-too-short life.

Today, as I write this, it’s raining in Salt Lake City, Utah – which seems appropriate as the world seems just a little more dark without the illuminating brilliance of a true visionary; a man who brought us new ways to stay connected, share our lives, and experience all the world has to offer. He never seemed to falter in the face of the “status quo” and created a brand that was uniquely his – a standard I’m sure Apple will strive to continue to carry on.

I would like to leave you with a few quotes and stories to read in honor of Mr. Jobs, and to simply say, “Rest in Peace, Steve – you’re already missed.”

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs

“Steve Jobs was an extraordinary visionary, our very dear friend and the guiding light of the Pixar family. He saw the potential of what Pixar could be before the rest of us, and beyond what anyone ever imagined. Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was to simply ‘make it great.’ He is why Pixar turned out the way we did and his strength, integrity and love of life has made us all better people. He will forever be a part of Pixar’s DNA. Our hearts go out to his wife Laurene and their children during this incredibly difficult time. – John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, Chief Creative Officer and President of Pixar

“Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined.

Steve was such an ‘original,’ with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started.

With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time. -Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney

“I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely. – Bill Gates

“I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family. -Larry Page, Co-founder of Google

“He’s taller than I thought he would be, and pretty tanned. Hawaii. I go to introduce myself and then think that he’s probably busy and doesn’t want to be mobbed. I go get some salad, think that its my job to be at least a little aggressive with these things, so I put down my plate, and I finally squeeze by the crowd to introduce myself. No banter, just wanted to say hi, I’m Brian from Gizmodo. And you made the iPod, right? (I didn’t say that second part.)

Then Steve got really excited and happy.

And he tells me that he reads the site. Actually, 3-4 times a day, since it doesn’t sit still for very long. I told him that I appreciate the clicks, and that I’ll keep buying iPods if he keeps clicking. It’s his favorite gadget blog. It was a really, really nice moment. His face scrunched up with genuine excitement. I must have looked like one of those gals front row at a Beatles concert, as much as I tried to be “professional.” –Brian Lam, former editor of Gizmodo on his regrets in his handling of the story of the infamous lost iPhone 4 prototype

“Today, we lost one of the most influential thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs of all time. Steve Jobs was simply the greatest CEO of his generation. While I am deeply saddened by his passing, I’m reminded of the stunning impact he had in revolutionizing the way people consume media and entertainment. My heart goes out to his family and to everyone who had the opportunity to work beside him in bringing his many visions to life. -Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp

Steve Jobs Dies

ABC.com reported on the death of technological wizard Steve Jobs just moments ago. The statement from his board of directors reads as follows.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today, Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”

It has been barely more than 24 hours since their product announcements yesterday, and already the good news is overshadowed with sad news. Everyone at BigShinyRobot sends our love to his friends and family, and know that we have truly been touched by his innovation.

Disappointed in the iPhone 4S? . . . Why?

As the entire globe is aware, yesterday Apple announced their latest iPhone, the iPhone 4S. After well over a year of speculation about an iPhone 5, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage to introduce what is essentially an upgraded iPhone 4, and now of course there seems to be some fallout in the form of disappointment that we didn’t see an iPhone 5 with some people just downright upset over the fact. Perhaps this should be a wake up call to iPhone fans to set their expectations accordingly going forward and not believe all the hype and speculation that they see between models of iPhones.

“Disclaimer”: Just to get this out of the way and to address the inevitable comment that I am just an Apple apologist/fanboy, the only Apple product I currently own is an iPhone. Several years ago I jumped over from T-Mobile to AT&T, trading in my Shadow for an iPhone 3G. Since that time I have quite enjoyed my iPhone and when the iPhone 4 was released, I upgraded to that. The phone does a lot of what I expect out of a phone, and a lot more. That being said, there are times I have been quite envious of several different Android phones with their functionality and customization options, but I enjoy my iPhone and choose to stick with this brand, at least for the time being. You will never catch me trying to win an argument with one of my Android phone-toting friends by simply saying “OMG iPhonez r so much bettar!!! Android suckz!” There are things Android does better than Apple’s iOS, and I believe there are things iOS does better than Android. Also, just as a warning, this is little more than a rant.

There is little doubt that Apple’s iPhone is hands down one of the best smartphones on the market, and has been since day one. The bar was set pretty high with the original “2G” iPhone, and with each model released each year Apple tries to reset that bar even higher to compete in the market place. They also try to set the bar so high because of their fan-base – a fan-base that are a dedicated bunch and expect a lot out of the company, but at times perhaps expect a bit too much.

As it seems to go with iPhone customers, pretty much the day after the iPhone 4 was released about 15 months ago speculation started on what the next iPhone would bring to the table; a bigger screen? No home button? HD front-facing camera? A curved screen? A new form factor? It seemed that in no time at all there was no lack of speculation and expectation as to what the “iPhone 5” would bring. I personally was curious as to why so many people just assumed the next phone would be a completely new, highly upgraded iPhone 5. As I stated before, I began my iPhone ownership with a 3G, and it was only a few months later the iPhone 3GS was released. Of course, the 3GS was quite the step forward from the 3G, but not enough to justify me upgrading from the model I had just purchased not even 5 months prior. Then, of course in 2010 we saw the release of the all-new, redesigned iPhone 4 that seemed to blow both models out of the water (depending on your perspective I suppose) – it was definitely now time to upgrade. So, for me anyway, over the last year I was quite surprised to be hearing all of this talk of an iPhone 5. Didn’t it make more sense for Apple to once again come out with an upgraded intermediary model of the previous year’s phone and have the expectation be that it wouldn’t be until 2012 that we saw some sort of iPhone 5? After all, a year (year and a half) is a short time to come up with a completely redesigned phone.

I understand that it’s hard to guess what Apple is going to do, and expecting a 4S as opposed to a 5 based on the short life of the iPhone thus far may not be that obvious. Saying that it was the next “logical” step based solely on the short pattern of iPhone–>iPhone 3G–>iPhone 3GS–>iPhone 4 is tough to determine with a company that is known for their innovation, I get that. What I don’t get is the “outcry”, “outrage”, and “disappointment” with the iPhone 4S based on the fact that Apple didn’t live up to the hype that nobody else but the media, bloggers, and iPhone fans created themselves. Not once over the last 15 months has Apple said anything about their next iPhone, and yet we see page after page of rumors and speculation and people looking forward to the next iPhone putting far too much stock in them, getting their expectation way too high, and then being disappointed when Apple reveals the iPhone 4S – which is a considerable upgrade from the 4.

What did people want out of an iPhone 5? A faster, dual core processor? Well, the iPhone 4S has an A5 dual-core processor that runs the phone twice as fast as its predecessor with 7x the graphics processing power. A better camera? The 4S is now touting an 8MP camera with all sorts of additional hardware the iPhone 4 doesn’t have to make photos taken with your phone reasonably better. CDMA/GSM dual-band capability? BAM! There you go, you now have that on the 4S. There are other changes that were “expected” that didn’t come to fruition, such as a bigger screen, a curved screen, an aluminum casing as opposed to the glass casing of the iPhone 4, and an Apple logo that lights up on the back. Okay, so a bigger screen would have been nice, but keep in mind though that that probably would mean a bigger phone over all. It wouldn’t surprise me to see this next year if/when a true iPhone 5 is released. The other items though, are simply cosmetic; why do you need/want a curved screen? What benefit does this offer? If Apple completely encased a dual-core processor in aluminum casing the phone would probably have heat issues. A light-up Apple logo on the back? Are some people so desperate to let the world know they use an iPhone that they want to draw more attention to that with a light up logo? Frankly, people want what they want out of their iPhones, but why did so many people take all of this speculation and rumors as fact, get so excited about it, and then get upset when Apple didn’t add this stuff to the iPhone?

As an iPhone owner, we only get one new model a year as opposed to if you’re an Android user you have endless options in phones with more being released every month. There is a lot of fun to be had in speculating what the collective “we” will all get in the next model of iPhone, in fact I read endless amounts of news, rumors and speculation between each iPhone – not necessarily because I am going to jump on each new iPhone released, but because I find it exciting what an innovative company like Apple to going to do next. Speculation and rumors need to remain just that until Apple officially unveils their new products. Have your fun, read into what the next iPhone could have, get excited about what’s next for your favorite gadget, but don’t ask for Tim Cook’s head on a pike when you don’t get everything you want.

I’m going to wrap up with some “tough love” that will probably solicit some entertaining comments for this post. I consider myself to be kind of a tech geek. I love scouring the internet to find out what the latest and greatest “thing” is that’s coming out. Innovations in phones, music players, tablet computers, laptops, TV’s, streaming services all interest me and I find quite a bit of joy in reading news and speculation on “what’s next” for just about everything, it’s fun. Where it stops being fun, particularly with the iPhone and Apple, is with this off-shoot of fans who feel entitled to everything and take to the interwebs with digital pickets when their expectations that they themselves made up aren’t met. The iPhone (and other smartphones for that matter) is an amazing device that will find you a restaurant, keep you in touch with everyone you care to and share your life with the world, take pictures and HD video, keep you entertained with endless options in mobile gaming, tell you where you are and how to get somewhere else, keep you on schedule with all of life’s goings-ons, and countless of other features – and, oh yeah, it will make a phone call if you need it to, hell it will make video calls – and you’re upset because despite now making it twice as fast as it’s predecessor, adding a voice assistant, and adding a camera that will take pictures that rival any point-and-shoot camera on the market today you didn’t get a screen half an inch bigger and a new design? Get over it. It’s a f%*&ing cell phone. While people all over America are taking to the streets, namely Wall Street, to protest regarding the future of America, there are people out there who’s biggest complaint in the world right now is the fact that Apple didn’t meet their fabricated expectations with the new iPhone. I know some out there will have the argument that these expectations aren’t fabricated, but instead expected due to what other companies are doing with their phones. The fact is Apple isn’t the only smartphone game in town anymore and there are plenty of viable options to choose now, so if you aren’t pleased with the iPhone any longer then vote with your dollar and try out a different phone with a different operating system. You’re the consumer and you have choices.

The funny thing is is that Apple could have just changed one little thing about the design such as replacing the glass with aluminum and kept all the other changes the same in the iPhone 4S, but actually called it an iPhone 5 and half the people complaining today would be completely content. I guess it goes to show that it really can be “all in a name”. Keep in mind though that no one is going to make you purchase this phone. The 4S may present the perfect opportunity for people who still own a 3G or 3GS, or perhaps another smartphone to upgrade. For iPhone 4 owners like myself, it may not be “enough” to justify the cost of upgrading, but there’s no use getting unreasonably upset about it. Sure, it would have been cool to see some new design with a bigger screen, etc., but there is always the option to wait and see what Apple releases next year or to try a different phone that has the features one is looking for.

In closing, just in case you’re wondering, no, the irony that as people protest for the future of this country I currently sit here complaining about people complaining about the iPhone 4S does not escape me . . .

FIRST LOOK: Russell Crowe as Jor-El

Sure to be as divisive with fans as the Henry Cavill in costume photos, now we get Russell Crowe in costume as Jor-El.

I actually think this looks pretty sweet.  I mean, if he were to tear the S off his chest and throw it at someone like in Superman II, well. . . that could cause some damage.  (At least as much as tossing a phone at you.) It’s keeping in Zack Snyder’s previous costuming ethic.

And, as much as I like Marlon Brando, it’s an improvement over the space pajamas the Kryptonians wore in the Richard Donner movie.

But, what matters my opinion? What do YOU robots think?

PREVIEW: The Clone Wars 4.5 “Mercy Mission”

Lucasfilm was kind enough to give us a sneak peak at the next episode of The Clone Wars.

From their blurb:

After groundquakes have devastated the planet Aleen, a Republic relief effort arrives, including the 104th battalion of clone troopers along with droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. When the native Aleena’s pleas go unheard, it becomes the duty of the droids to embark on a surreal journey through Aleena’s subterranean world to save the planet, in “Mercy Mission” a new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, October 7th on Cartoon Network.

The clip looks like a mix between Temple of Doom and Return of the Jedi for, I think, obvious reasons.

I really like that Threepio is being used as a translator, though I’m not sure why he’s out on loan from Padme.  That could be an interesting story.  This reminds a lot of the early episodes that Katie Lucas wrote with Jedi Crash.

I think these episodes are fun and I’m glad to see the Clones taking center stage again.

Apple Announces iPhone 4S

Today Apple held their annual keynote event announcing their latest model of iPhone. In a seemingly long (and a little drawn out) event, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage to “Talk iPhone”.

The keynote started off with the usual sales and user figures, touting Apple products as the ones to beat in many markets. Then it was on to what I personally was looking forward to the most, iOS5! Apple didn’t really bring anything new to the table that wasn’t already announced about their latest operating system earlier this year. We are still getting a new notifications system (finally!), over=the-air updates, some Twitter integration throughout the phone to make posting to that particular social network a lot easier, and a bunch of little improvements that will probably make a big impact like the ability to now quickly access the camera from the lock screen by double-tapping the Home Button and using the volume control buttons to snap a photo. It all kind of seemed like a rehashing of what we already knew, but we did finally get a release date for it, and that date is October 12!

Following the iOS5 presentation, the next topic was iPods. The iPod Nano is receiving a face-life with bigger icons and more built in sensors that will provide a better experience for all of you out there who use them for exercising, etc. These will be the most affordable iPod Nano’s ever with prices set at $129 (8GB) and $149 (16GB). It’s also important to note that Apple noticed the trend of people using them with watchbands and decided to add a bunch of new watch faces. With regards to the iPod touch, it didn’t sound like there were really any internal improvements to the gadget. You can now get it in black or white and it will also be sporting iOS5 once it’s released. Prices and capacity will remain the same.

Late in the presentation it was on to the main event. The next iPhone. Speculation has run rampant over what Apple would unveil. Two new iPhones with one priced lower? The iPhone 5? A curved screen? A bigger screen? As it turns out none of this speculation would prove to be true. As my friend, and BSR web-developer, Senador Kooch and I have been speculating ourselves we did not get an iPhone 5, but instead an iPhone 4S. While some out there may be upset about this, it matches what Apple has done with the iPhone thus far in its short existence (iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, with most likely an iPhone 5 coming next year). The iPhone 4S is not to be overlooked though as it is touting a dual-core A-5 processor that is said to run twice as fast as the iPhone 4 and offers 7-times the graphics-processing speed, dual band CDMA/GSM, an 8MP camera (with all sorts of additional internals that makes photos even better looking than those taken with the iPhone 4), and the very impressive addition of Siri voice control.

The faster processor and better camera is a nice upgrade to the iPhone, but what impressed me the most was the Siri voice control. This is nothing like the less-than-spectacular voice control we currently have on our iPhones – this is an all out voice-controlled assistant. No need to memorize a bunch of pre-determined commands, just ask your phone to do something for you and it will. A live demo was done on stage and saw the phone being asked “Should I carry an umbrella with me today?” and the phone responds with something along the lines of “The weather looks clear today”. You can ask it for stock reports, to schedule meetings, to read back text in e-mails and text messages, and it will even dictate a response and send it for you. It’s quite incredible what has been achieved with this voice assistant and could possibly change how iPhone users interact with their devices.

The iPhone 4S will be available for pre-order on October 7, and will go on sale on October 14. You will be able to get your hands on the 16GB for $199, the 32GB for $299, and for the first time ever 64GB for $399. Along with launching the latest iPhone, Apple also announced you will be now be able to get the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S on Sprint!

While Apple seems to have gone the route of introducing an improved model of their previous phone and sticking to a completely new device every other year (theoretically), this is certainly a very good update for anyone looking to upgrade. Those out there with an iPhone 4 may be on the fence about now, trying to decide if this is all reason enough to upgrade, or to wait and use their contract discounts for the iPhone 5 – but for 3GS owners out there, this is probably more than enough reason to finally upgrade. I had stated in a previous article that Apple would really have to “wow” me to convince me to not wait until 2012’s model, and frankly I wasn’t that “wowed” until the Siri demonstration. Yes, a faster processor and better camera are all very nice, but expected, and my iPhone 4 runs just fine for me right now that I was willing to wait until next year’s model. After the Siri demonstration however I started thinking about all the applications of this voice assistant system and was hoping against all odds that it would not be an iPhone 4S exclusive, but instead an iOS5 addition. Unfortunately it looks like it will only be available on the 4S and so now as I write this I am sitting on the fence debating whether or not this will all be worth an upgrade. At least I have a few days to decide.

You can check out all the specs and watch videos introducing the iPhone 4S and Siri over at Apple’s website.

Sound off in the comments below with your thoughts from Apple’s keynote presentation! Tell us what impressed you, what disappointed you, and if you’ll be picking up an iPhone 4S!

PICTURES: The Avengers

Agent M posted this up on his Tumblr and I didn’t think I could be more excited for this movie.

There’s shots of Nick Fury FINALLY getting into some action, Loki with some soldiers of some kind, this shot of Hawkeye and Black Widow in the thick of it, aside from some others.

You can see the rest of them here.

We were also told to keep an eye on the official Marvel Avengers website… Could a trailer or teaser be coming? Only time will tell.

The Avengers hits theatres next summer.

REVIEW: Orchid – Issue One

“Ticelli Bot” is here to bring us his review of  Tom Morello’s Orchid.

Many of you probably know that Tom Morello is a guitarist for the bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Some of you might even know that he, along with Serj Tankian of System of a Down, founded a non-profit political activist organization known as the Axis of Justice.

tom morello

What you might not know, however, is that Mr. Morello is now writing comic books. Yes, comics. Morello has teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to bring us Orchid, a post-apocalyptic story that we have seen a hundred times before…or is it?

The focus here is very much on a class hierarchy and how the people act, or don’t act, within it. The rich and powerful live in fortresses up on high land, away from the danger of mutated creatures andthe scum of the lower class citizens. These “Bridge People,” however, have to live in poverty as slaves to the upper class or be killed. The story also focuses on a mask that is told to have some sort of power should a saint (Jim Carrey?) wear it, otherwise it kills the wearer. This mask is a continual point of contest between the classes as it is a sign of hope for the Bridge People and I can only assume that the wealthy want to try to use its power to further their iron-fisted rein over the poor. Some very interesting characters are introduced as well. One who flips off his oppressors as he is falling backwards off a broken piece of roadway into a ravine, and another who became a prostitute to be able to feed her family (she is the title character of the series).

I think that this whole post-apocalyptic thing has been done to death, however, the world and characters we are introduced to here have found a way to be unique in a wasteland of “blah.” I found myself enjoying the story much more than I originally thought I would and I am eager to read what Morello does with what has been established. Interestingly, there seems to have been some inspiration from author Tom Wolfe in Morello’s writing. He has created a character seemingly named after him and used many common themes also seen in Wolfe’s work, so it’s hard not to see similarities. Drawn by Scott Hepburn, animation designer for Marvel, DC, White Wolf, Udon and Nelvana as well as creator of the web series The Port. Hepburn does a great job of placing us in a world that is beautiful and tragic. I recommend that people go out and give this one a try when it comes out next week on October 12.

Check out Dark Horse’s website for more info:

“From the mind of musician Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, The Nightwatchman) with art by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic), Orchid is the tale of a teenage prostitute who learns that she is more than the role society has imposed upon her.

When the seas rose, genetic codes were smashed. Human settlements are ringed by a dense wilderness from which ferocious new animal species prey on the helpless. The high ground belongs to the rich and powerful that overlook swampland shantytowns from their fortress-like cities. Iron-fisted rule ensures order and allows the wealthy to harvest the poor as slaves. Welcome to the world of Orchid.

• Each issue to be promoted with a new song by Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine!

• Featuring a variant cover by the best known and influential street artist Shepard Fairey!”

Ticelli Bot majors in Computer Science and Communications and spends his non-school time watching and making movies, hiking, playing video games, and reading comics.

REVIEW: Doctor Who Season 6 Finale

Over the weekend, we were given the final installment of Doctor Who – Season 6. It closed where it opened, with the death of the Doctor in Utah, and it came to an emotional final conclusion, answering questions we’d all been scratching our heads about since the season opener.

It was apparent this episode was going to have to cover a lot of ground to tie up all the loose ends and unanswered questions dropped throughout this season and it answers most of them in a surprising fashion. Showrunner Steven Moffat has been very good at doing the unexpected on this show, and if he does something that’s even half-expected he does it in a completely new, off the wall sort of way. Taking a page out of Vonnegut’s book of telling stories involving time travel, Steven Moffat has really excelled at telling stories completely out of order in a jumbled mess of timey-wimey stuff, but completely understandable to an audience watching for rising levels of drama.

It’s honestly absurd how complicated yet simple it all really is.

This episode is no exception and he takes the beginning as the end in all sorts of different directions, but never straying from the one thread of story that takes you to the next logical step.

I guess this is all a roundabout way of saying that I really loved this episode of the show. I didn’t feel cheated by the ending whatsoever and I feel it leaves enough unresolved issues to keep me on the hook for another season. Yes, the Silence is still out there. Did anything that happened in that aborted timeline stick?

And this is setting up a next season that can be even darker than previous seasons. The Doctor seems to have committed to letting the whole of time and space (or at least his companions) think he’s dead. He’s going off the map to find himself and he seems at least a touch bittersweet and possibly angry about the way things played out.

Matt Smith has completely worked his way into my heart as the title character. Any lingering love I had for the previous two regenerations has been matched equally by my love for Matt Smith. He’s an incredible actor and always fun to watch (I suppose in the same way the last two were.) In this episode, though, he seemed to age a hundred years right before our eyes. It was remarkable.

Also, I hope this episode doesn’t signal the end of Amy and Rory’s time on the show. They’re fantastic additions and I’ve absolutely adored having them as the companions.

Do I think this was the best season finale we’ve had since the relaunch of the show? No. I still think the David Tennant’s season finale where Rose is left in the alternate dimension might still be the best… (Though Christopher Eccleston’s finale was very good, too…) This was good… Who knows. Only time will tell if I feel differently about it in the future, perhaps I’m still to close to it.

Bottom line is: If you’re not watching Doctor Who, you’re doing it wrong. This season was great.

PODCAST: September Big Shiny Podcast!

This Month’s Podcast Features:

Zombietron, Kill-tacular-tron, Arse Bot, Vagatron, Mexicus Prime, and special guest, Senador Kooch

After last month’s disastrous lead-off of Jokin’ Off With Jimmy, the guys decided to axe the segment all together. Instead, this month’s podcast features a new segment, “What’s Hot on the Streets with DJ JimJam”. You can be the judge of this latest attempt at giving Mexicus Prime his own segment. Let’s just say he’s already decided to cut that segment as well – so next month you can look forward to hearing the first installment of “What’s Cooking in the Kitchen”.

The robots spend a good chunk of the first half of the podcast talking/ranting about Netflix’s new business plan to split into two companies. Arse-bot tries to talk about Star Wars on Blu-ray as Zombietron continues to play a Darth Vader “NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!” sound bite over and over and over.

Kill-tacular-tron covers this month’s collectibles he’s purchased, which included a Lego Millennium Falcon! Piles and piles of comic books are also covered in the second half as Kiley leads the discussions on the new Ultimate Spider-Man as well as DC’s New 52. Everything is wrapped up with some video game talk in which Kill-tacular-tron and Arse Bot talk about powering through Dead Island, despite their growing disdain for the game.
