REVIEW: Star Wars: The Clone Wars – 4.8 “The General”

Jedi Master Pong Krell will go down in the history books as one of the least compassionate Jedi generals in the history of the Jedi Order. He’s hard headed and not a very good strategist.

His strategy is very much like General Mireau’s in Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant war film, Paths of Glory. Like Mireau (played with delicious hatred by George Macready), Krell knows exactly what he wants and he doesn’t care how many men die in the reality of the battlefield to obtain it. I was convinced that the third segment of this episode would begin with him ordering the clones through the frontlines regardless of the situation and that he would order the clones defending the mouth of the gorge to fire to the rear of Rex’s men to prevent further retreat.

Krell is that much of a sonofabitch.

And I really like it.

I think this episode was vastly superior to last weeks, even though we couldn’t have it without the setup provided. And I think Krell himself wouldn’t have succeeded without an equal amount of setup. Krell is commanded by Obi-wan Kenobi to take an air base supplying the capital city as quickly as possible. There are a few possible routes, but he sends Rex and his men right up the middle in a full frontal assault. He might as well have ordered them into a sausage grinder for all the good they were doing against the Umbarran millipede tanks. But the only thing that allowed his plan to work was the fact that Rex and his team had trained under Anakin Skywalker, who had taught them to think much more creatively than if they’d been assigned to Krell from the get go.

It’s very telling that Krell is assigned to this assignment at all. Where’s his army?

Oh, right. He ordered them to their deaths.

This was a very challenging episode for the clones. They’re more than happy to march into battle with a sensible plan, even it means their death. But give them a plan with no sense to it and no chance of survival? See how quickly they rebel.

It’s the challenges of the clones dealing with the fact that they have to acknowledge they were bred to die in the name of the Republic, but don’t want to do it for no reason, that makes this episode so damned compelling.

But even if this episode wasn’t so compelling, it was damn pretty to look at. Every frame of animation that takes place on Umbara is dripping with paint and brushstrokes, every moment able to be framed in a museum. The lighting schemes, the trees, the constant mist, the use of motion, it was all incredible.

I was particularly impressed with the camera moves in the first third of the episode, floating through the battle making you feel like you’re there. In fact, I found myself cringing every time we saw a clone brutally killed at the hands of the Umbarrans… And come to think of it, I did the same thing when the clones shot a wounded Umbarran, too. More than any other episode of the show (and certainly any of the movies) this might have been the most brutal installment of visual storytelling ever committed to film, save Order 66 and the death of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.

Dee Bradley Baker needs to be congratulated. He voiced no less than a dozen different clones in this episode and each one was unique. He’s really shining in the role and I can’t wait to see how things boil over in this arc.

But there was still fun to be had. In the last third one of the clones lets out a classic line from A New Hope (“I prefer a good fight to all this sneakin’ around”) before stealing enemy ships they have no idea how to pilot. It added a much needed bit of levity to the episode.

Overall, I think this episode is structurally superior to last weeks. We were told the objectives, what was at stake, where and why, very clearly right at the beginning. The clones took action after action to make it happen, escalating the tension and the action as each thing they tried failed to work.

This episode was turned up to 11 across the board and I’m glad we’ve got two more episodes left on Umbara. Especially since I really feel like Rex and his men are on a collision course with Krell. And they’ve foreshadowed a confrontation beautifully, with the fire in Krell’s eyes and Rex clenching his fist…

I like where things are heading and I hope Walter Murch comes back to direct more episodes of the show.

Netflix Pick of the Week 11/04/11

The last time I recommended a Netflix movie, it quickly became unavailable for streaming. This week’s pick should stay significantly longer, if not indefinitely (I really shouldn’t say that). Anyway, this week’s pick is my personal favorite entry in the venerable Mystery Science Theater 3000 series. The incredibly ambitious (and also incredibly funny) Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie!

MST3K can definitely be an acquired taste, but I find the theatrical movie to be the most accessible to newbies by far. Not only is the movie itself rightly considered a classic (This Island Earth, in case you were wondering), but Mike and the Bots absolutely knock it out of the park at every turn with the quips, cracks, and just outright fun you have watching along with them.

The movie has everything (except the theme song), it succinctly explains the premise of the MST concept in the first five minutes, flows really nicely, and has riffs that are don’t require a PhD in film making to get.

"Should we be seeing this?"

This Island Earth is essentially the story of scientist/jet jockey/entry level d-bag Cal Meachum. A mysterious group sends him parts to an incredibly complex machine called an Interociter. After the succsessful completion of said device, he is contacted by said group and recruited to do cool 50’s/60’s sci-fi type stuff with “ATOMIC ENERGY!” As you might expect, Cal discovers the strange secret behind his benefactors (hint: their giant foreheads are a dead giveaway), and takes the fight, such as it is, to them. The final act takes place on the planet Metaluna and features my favorite Universal Monster, the Metaluna Mutant. Will Cal and his compatriots ever get back to Earth, or will they painfully in a fire (special appearance by Russell Johnson aka Gilligan’s Island’s “The Professor”)? You’ll have to watch the movie and find out for yourself!

"The Secret Government Eggo Project!"

If you’re a fan of sci-fi, comedy, or both you would do well to give this film a watch. and be sure to stay until the end! There’s no after the credits scene, but the credits themselves are a treat to watch. I’ll leave you with some of my favorite out of context quotes. After you see the movie, let’s compare favorite lines!

  • You’re being killed by the LightFM!
  • What’s with this “And the Rest” crap?
  • Normal View!!!!!
  • Yeah, let’s slip away under cover of afternoon in the biggest car in the county!
  • And if your hands were magnetized, that would mean something.
  • Oh, no, Tinkerbell’s going down! Pull up! Tink, oh god no!
  • Puppet Wranglers? There weren’t any puppets in this movie!

Two Clips From The Clone Wars 4.8 “The General”

I can’t wait for tonight’s episode.

It will be unlike anything we’ve seen. It’s directed by Walter Murch, who was as responsible for THX-1138 as George Lucas. And if you haven’t read his book, In the Blink of an Eye, you’re missing out. The man is a genius. His book taught me stuff about editing that I use every single day at work.

From the press release:

The Republic assault on the shadowy planet of Umbara continues in “The General,” a new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, November 4th on Cartoon Network.

The fierce General Krell orders Captain Rex and the clone troopers of the 501st to conquer a heavily fortified Umbaran airbase. It is absolutely essential the clones succeed, for the rest of the planetary invasion depends on it. Krell will accept nothing less than victory, but the mission seems impossible – the clones must march overland through hostile territory and monstrously advanced enemy technology. Unless the clones can use their ingenuity to counter these threats, it will be a certain suicide mission.

This second installment in the epic four-part Umbara story arc raises the stakes and is filled with big screen cinematic action – and with good reason. Helming the episode as director is Walter Murch. A renowned film editor and sound designer, Murch won an Academy Award for his sound editing work on Apocalypse Now, and an unprecedented double-Oscar win for both sound and picture editing for The English Patient. A longtime friend and creative collaborator with George Lucas, Murch worked with Lucas on the films THX 1138 and American Graffiti. He quite literally wrote the book on film editing, the influential In the Blink of an Eye.

You Could Be a Red Shirt in an upcoming Star Trek Comic!

IDW Publishing and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) have teamed up to host the Star Trek “Be A Redshirt” contest. In my opinion, this is one of the best contests currently going on the internet – the chance to support your local comic book shop AND appear as a Red Shirt in an upcoming Star Trek comic book.

Don’t know what a Red Shirt is? (Well, first of all, shame on you! Go watch Netflix until you’re caught up.) Then check out this video:

From Star Trek’s website: “As redshirts are famous for always catching the phaser in Star Trek episodes, and as comic fans can be so loyal in defending their local retailer, it’s the perfect contest,” said Dirk Wood, IDW’s Director of Retailer Marketing. “And, partnering with the CBLDF is perfect because no one knows more about defending retailers than they do.”

Starting on Wednesday, fans can enter the contest by writing an explanation of 300 words or less about what makes their comic-book retailer the best in the business, and then emailing that explanation to contest@IDWPublishing.comwith the subject: Save My Retailer. As noted, the winning fan and his or her retailer will be depicted on a limited-edition variant cover of Star Trek, IDW’s recently launched series set in the Star Trek (2009) universe, with the new crew featured in alternate-timeline versions of classic TOS storylines. The Redshirt cover will be limited to just 300 copies, with 100 each provided to the winner and his or her retailer, as well as 100 to the CBLDF in order to assist them in carrying on their important and challenging efforts to defend retailers everywhere. Finally, the winning fan will also receive the original cover art, which will be rendered by the Sharp Brothers.”

And who wouldn’t want to appear as a Red Shirt in a Star Trek comic? You could get phasered or eaten by a giant alien – anything can happen to a Red Shirt! What are you waiting for?

CONTEST: Jurassic Park Trilogy on Blu-ray

We’re giving away a complete Blu-ray collection of the Jurassic Park Trilogy!

The first Jurassic Park film is easily one of Spielberg’s best and holds up so well as a masterpiece of the cinema. The second one, not so much. I quite liked the third one though, it’s an unabashed monster movie. (I saw it mere hours after getting to talk to Stan Winston at San Diego Comic-Con in 2001. Quint from Aintitcool wrote that conversation up in 2001. He was there, I was there, and another totally obnoxious guy was there.) That was the best possible way to see it.

The contest will be open until Friday, November 4th. Winners will be announced on Monday, November 7th.

To enter, all you need to do is shoot us an email at editor (at) bigshinyrobot.com. Make the subject “SHOOT HER!” (which might be one of the best episodes of the entire series. For an extra chance to win, post on your Facebook wall asking all of your friends to like our Facebook page. Or you can ask your followers on twitter to follow us @BigShinyRobot. Or both.

Just be sure to mention in your email that you’ve done it.

If you can’t wait, you can get it on Amazon now for less than $50.

Good luck.

CONTEST: Dracula the Unconquered #1

Happy Halloween Roboteers! We here at BSR all hope you’re having a good time today with the tricking, treating and miscellaneous spooky activities. A question comes to mind though… What are you going to do when the festivities are over and you still are full of Halloween spirit? Sure, you could pop in a Hammer Horror film or listen to Monster Mash for the billionth time (and you really can’t go wrong with either), but for those of you who want a new All Hallow’s Eve tradition, we’ve a suggestion from you…

That’s right, comics! In particular, we want to offer you the chance to win a free copy of Dracula the Unconquered #1! This comic begins a  new digital comic paradigm that addresses the problems inherent with digital as it stands now, namely the digital rights management and the price. The book is written by the ghastly Chris Sims, drawn by the vampiric Steve Downer with lettering from the unholy talent of Josh Krach. Drac the Unconquered takes place in the early days of the 20th century and the resurrection of ‘ol Fang Face himself. A 6-page preview can be viewed here.

Now here’s the skinny. We’re giving away 5 copies of this fine publication to five lucky readers. Why? Well, honestly, it’s because the whole project is incredibly ambitious, and something I see personally as a giant step in the right direction for digital comics as a whole. $1 for 24 pages of Dracul-Action is frankly, a steal. I’m hoping that even if you don’t win the contest, you’ll give the book a shot, and support the work of independent creators. Trust me, the preview is great, but the real meat of the story is contained in the full issue. I don’t want to give the story away, but Drac himself gives a certain Belmont clan a run for their money in the whip-wielding department, and there is a truly epic battle to be had as well!

Honestly, I can’t praise this book enough. as first issues go, this one has everything you need. It has action, the premise is set up, and you’re introduced to the principle characters. Best of all, it’s done in such a way that it never comes off as an exposition dump, but at the same time even if you don’t know Dracula from Adam, you can jump in and enjoy the book just the same! Highly recommended all around.

OK, I’ve pontificated and praised the book enough, I’m sure you all want to know how to win the damn thing. That’s really easy. Just add a comment, post on the facebook page for this story or just outright email me atshaz at bigshinyrobot.com” with your favorite interpretation of Dracula, and why it’s your favorite. Please Note: Since this is a digital giveaway I’ll need your email address regardless of how you enter. This will also be a quick contest, I’ll only be taking entries until midnight (CST) tonight! The contest is open to anyone in the world (the magic of digital giveaways), so get your entries in asap!
