REVIEW: Hop

Just in time for the Easter holiday, Universal Studios’ Hop is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.  The movie tells the story of how young E.B. (presumably short for ‘Easter Bunny’) is the reluctant heir to the Easter Bunny legacy and all the responsibilities that come with it.  His home is the aptly named Easter Island, home to mysterious statues and a magical place where holiday candy is lovingly made and quality controlled.  There are jelly beans, peeps, and my personal favorite—chocolate bunnies.  (For the record, I like the hollow milk chocolate ones by Palmer with those colored candy eyes).  This candy facility would put Willy Wonka’s to shame, and the animation in these sequences is incredible.  Plus, the cuteness of a young E.B. makes me want him as a huggable plushie.  In fact, one of the best scenes of the movie is when he pretends to be a wind-up toy.  His appearance just screams cuddly.

However, our fluffy hero is rebellious and has no desire to follow in his father’s rabbity footsteps.  His dream is to become a drummer instead, and he flees to Hollywood in hopes of making it a reality.  Once there, he meets Fred (James Marsden).  Fred is unemployed, a burden to his parents, and searching for his own dream.  They immediately form a love-hate relationship.

It’s unsurprising that this movie blends CGI and live action, since it’s directed by Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks), but I much preferred the wondrous computerized world of Easter Island over the live action Hollywood.  The chicks Carlos and Phil dwell alongside the bunnies on Easter Island, making it even more appealing.  These guys really should have had more screen time.  I foresee seeing more of them in the future.  Phil (pictured below) is the not-too-bright subordinate of Carlos, who is monitoring the disappearance of E.B. very closely.  He uses the situation to his advantage and tries to get closer to E.B.’s distraught father.

The appearance by David Hasselhoff didn’t really thrill me, but this movie is really very cute in spite of that.  Warning, though.  It is also very cheesy at times, and Marsden’s acting is a little over the top.  Still, it’s a film about not giving up on your dreams and the importance of loved ones, and I’m sure it will become a holiday tradition in many families.

REVIEW: Table Top Episode 1 – Small World

If you haven’t checked out the new Geek and Sundry Youtube channel (created by the producers of The Guild), then let me be the first to tell you that you are definitely missing out! Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton and crew have yet again struck geek gold with their new lineup of programming, and I’m here today to bring you my review of their new show, Table Top.

The show takes a fairly simple premise – the playing and reviewing of a table top game – and turns it into something way more entertaining than I had originally envisioned. I’ve seen reviews and play-throughs of board games and the like on Youtube before, and they never seem to hit the right balance of both entertaining and informative. So, when I watched the first episode of Table Top, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they’ve actually put together a really great show!

Episode One begins with a basic description of gameplay and some general rules. They’ve started with Small World – a game that combines the military action of Risk with a really awesome fantasy world complete with a diverse selection of races and classes that you can change between throughout the game. The episode itself is broken up with fun description slides, light music and the actual gameplay – complete with fun and geeky comments from both Wheaton (the host) and the players – Grant Imahara (Mythbusters), Sean Plott (Day9TV) and Jenna Busch (geek blogger, writer and host). The flow and tone of the actual gameplay reminds me a bit of the Penny Arcade/Dungeons and Dragons Podcast (which Wheaton was also a part of, and is fantastic, btw).

As for the conversation and interaction between the players – it’s very honest and a lot like your average group of geeks getting together to play a table-top game. I feel this aspect of the show is especially refreshing and important because as a geek-girl gamer I can both relate to and enjoy what’s going on during the episode. Also, I happen to find it pretty important that a show doesn’t just market the hell out of something to me, and this show does a great job of not just trying to “sell us” on the game. The episode ends with the “Loser’s Couch” which is a fun take on the post-game conversation many of us have after getting completely owned.

Most importantly – it’s fun to watch! I’m really looking forward to the next episode (April 20th: Settlers of Katan – which such an awesome game!)

Watch Episode One now and let us know what you think below!

Oh, and a quick note to the producers of Geek and Sundry – if you’re looking for some Big Shiny Robots to participate, Swankmotron would be an excellent addition to an episode of your show (have you seen how much geeky stuff he’s involved in on the interwebs?), and I live in Los Angeles and work for a nearby video game developer…sooo…. give us a call!

Bungie Bids Farewell to ‘Halo’

It has been over a decade now since Bungie introduced the Halo series to the world on the original XBox, and two days ago on March 31, 2012, the company bid a fond farewell to the franchise that has spanned five titles and countless priceless multiplayer memories for people all over the world.

Honestly, it doesn’t seem like that long ago that I was sitting in Kill-tacular-tron’s basement with four XBoxes wired together as two teams squared off against each other (one team in his room, the other in his little brother’s across the hall). Racking up kill-streaks, downing bags of Doritos and liters of Mountain Dew, and shouting obscenities across the hall was how I spent many a Friday and Saturday night during my mid-teenage years – and believe it or not I was tazed more than once. Yes. Tazed. By a real tazer owned by a friend I shall refer to as “Mr. Jones” due to his unhappiness over me sniping him from across a level multiple times. It hurt, we laughed, we were young and dumb. These were great times.

As the years have gone on, and multiplayer moved online we all still found ourselves in front of a Halo title several times a month over the years. Trash-talking strangers, giggling over awesome kills, and saving video clips and images as trophies for posterity. I have been cussed out by kids that sounded no older than 13, and in return have taught some prepubescent brats a thing or two on how to creatively string together of words mothers of the world would be apalled by – but it’s all part of the fun; you run, you gun, you take cover, you snipe, you throw that grenade of desperation as you take a final bullet, you careen over a hill on a warthog running over poor saps not quick enough to move out of the way, you trash talk your competitors, you move on to the next round. It’s fu$%ing Halo.

The torch has now been completely passed to 343 Industries who will be releasing Halo 4 later this year, and I don’t think many people are worried about that. While we fans have stood behind Bungie for all the great work they’ve done on the franshise they created, I for one am excited to see where these new guys take it next, and what laugh-inducing (mis)adventures are in store for my friends and I, now in our late-twenties, who will eagerly hop online to wage our own battles against those who oppose us. It will be a new game, but I will still be haphazardly running into dire situations – out numbered and out gunned, Senador Kooch will still be meticulously planning attacks and executing them better than most I’ve ever played against, Bigcheezhead will still be trying to do his favorite thing in the world: sticking a grenade to the face of an opponent, and Kill-tacular-tron will still be humping every man he guns down.

I can’t wait.

To honor the completion of the passing of the Halo franchise to 343i, Bunige has put together an awesome infographic with some amazing stats on the Halo franchise. Obviously, you’ll want to click for the high-res version!

REVIEW: Game of Thrones 2.1

One of the most anticipated second seasons of a television series finally aired tonight, and it was chock-full of the fun and frivolity fans now expect from Game of Thrones.

SPOILERS AHEAD.  (at least for those who haven’t read the books, and why haven’t you?  They’re good!)

The episode begins with the kid that everyone loves to hate, King Joffrey.  He is able to display equal parts brat and sociopath in every scene, and the celebration of his name day is no exception.  Combatants battle each other in the hopes of entertaining him, and tortured Sansa Stark is forced to watch and pretend that she is having the time of her life, even when Joffrey sentences a man to death for simply being intoxicated.

Fan favorite Tyrion returns to King’s Landing to serve in his new role as Hand of the King, and Cersei is none too pleased to see her brother.  She must tolerate him, however, since their father named Tyrion to serve in his stead.  The best line of the night is when Tyrion tells Cersei: “You love your children.  It’s your one redeeming quality.  That and your cheekbones.”

We are treated to glimpses of some of the other characters so that no one is left out of this first episode of the season, but I can’t say that anything of major importance happened in these scenes, though the stage is obviously being set for major plot developments.

Bran is currently Lord of Winterfell in Robb’s absence, and he’s troubled by dreams he doesn’t understand.

Daenerys and Ser Jorah wander the wastelands with her people, and she sends three riders in search of cities and water after her horse falls. Her infant dragons are still in their cute stage, and Jorah warns her that enemies will take her dragons from her.  In the tone of a mother whose babies are threatened, she declares that no one will take her dragons.

Jon Snow and his companions from the Wall meet Craster and his daughters as they seek shelter on their journey.  Well, Craster’s wives.  His daughters are his wives.  (So much incest in this show!)  Mormont essentially tells Jon that he needs to behave and quit standing in the corner glowering at people.

New characters Melisandre and Stannis Baratheon appear, though Stannis’ men aren’t entirely sure about the red priestess who serves the new gods.  She produces the sword Lightbringer in a ceremony on a stretch of beach next to the roaring ocean, and Stannis retrieves it, readying himself to lay claim to the Iron Throne.  But first Melisandre must deal with a man who has questioned their actions.  When I first saw him, I said to myself, “It’s Sio Bibble!” (from The Phantom Menace).  Indeed, it is the same actor, but his contract must have been for just this episode. “The night is dark and full of terrors,” Melisandre says as she stands over his poisoned body, “but the fire burns them all away.”  She drank from the same poisoned cup but experience no ill effects.

Robb and his captive Jaime Lannister have a brief discussion in which Robb introduces Jaime to his direwolf.  (I couldn’t help but think that the wolf looked a little like the ones in the Twilight saga, though).  He later considers forging an alliance with Balon Greyjoy after a discussion with Theon, but Catelyn urges strongly against it.

Cersei speaks to Littlefinger in the hopes of gaining information about the missing Arya Stark, but Littlefinger stupidly hints at the fact that she and Jaime have been involved.  In a display of power, she tells her men to kill him but then has them back off.  She leaves him with the order to locate the girl, and we can well imagine he’s going to do his best, having come so close to death.

In a scene that will no doubt be viewed over and over again, Cersei slaps Joffrey.  He asks her about Robert’s bastards and wants to know how many women Robert was with after he tired of Cersei.  SLAP!  And while a mother may slap her son, a subject should not slap her king, and Joffrey tells her what she did is punishable by death.  I believe at this moment Cersei is beginning to suspect the kind of monster she has created in putting her child on the throne.  He is not the puppet she thought him to be, though this should have been crystal clear after he had Eddard Stark beheaded at the Sept of Baelor.

No doubt at Joffrey’s command, the guards storm Littlefinger’s pleasure house in search of Robert’s infant bastard.  They locate the baby and kill it as its heartbroken mother watches.  Next, they go in search of the blacksmith Gendry, who is on the King’s Road with Arya as they travel to the Wall.

The pieces are being placed on the board, and we will have to watch as the season unfolds to find out where they will end up.  Who will win the Game of Thrones?

Scott Pilgrim Full-Color Hardcovers

Bryan Lee O’Malley may have originally intended the Scott Pilgrim series to be black and white to stick to the Manga Inspired style but he’s been convinced to release a new edition of each book over the next few years. Book One will come out in August followed by Book Two in October with another 2 books a year until 2014. CBR has an interview with O’Malley and it seems like these books are going to be amazing. The small bits of Pilgrim art and short stories he’s done in color were always great and seeing the entire world O’Malley created transfer over into color is going to make these books a must have for any fan of the series. Check out the press release and some images below and then set aside $25 bucks for August.

Official Press Release

This August, Oni Press and Bryan Lee O’Malley will be bringing the uber-popular Scott Pilgrim series back to store shelves, but this time as an ultra-swank, 6 X 9, full-color hardcover edition. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 reprints the Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life for the first time in full color. The digital coloring is by the Shuster Award-nominated artist Nathan Fairbairn, the colorist for Batman Incorporated and Swamp Thing, and the whole thing is capped with a new cover from O’Malley.

“Everybody loves Bryan’s black-and-white artwork,” series editor James Lucas Jones explained, “but after seeing the few color stories he did with Scott and the gang, it was hard to avoid imagining a ‘what if?’ scenario. Now those wild dreams have come true. And to have one of the best colorists in the industry at the helm, that just seals the deal.”

“It’s been eight years since the first Scott Pilgrim book was published,” Oni marketing director Cory Casoni added. “Since then, the series has seen over twenty first reprints of the original format, with over a million copies of the first volumes sold. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 takes the familiar story from the original Scott Pilgrim series and gives it a new look. Plus it includes previously unpublished extras and bonus materials making this mighty tome one that’s required reading for Scottaholics everywhere!”

Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 will be the first of six hardcover reprints to be published bi-annually. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 2 is currently scheduled for an October 2012 release.

Each volume will be sized at 6” x 9”, making it bigger than the original versions, as well. “We’re upgrading the presentation in every way,” Jones said. “The traditional black-and-white versions will be there for those who still prefer that option, but now everyone can have a choice. One, the other, or both!”

Scheduled for a August 8th, 2012 publication date, Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 will retail for $24.99.

REVIEW: Unofficial Game Of Thrones Cookbook

You may not get quite the same impression from the HBO Series but the Song of Ice and Fire books are filled with descriptions of foods and feasts. Lamprey Pie and Roast Aurrochs and Onion Soup. Tons of food, Mr. Martin definitely has a spot in his heart for medieval food. Alan Kistler of the Crazy Sexy Geeks podcast realized this and wrote a great cookbook based on the show. I was excited to dig into one of the meals but I ran into a wall, my kitchen is too damn small for any serious cooking. The description of Sansa’s Buttermilk Biscuits sounded amazing but I didn’t have room to roll out the dough, and my oven has some bad hotspots. I resigned to making simple things. A Westerosian Fried Breakfast and Lannister Beef With Horseradish.

The breakfast is easy although I cut out the sausage, I don’t need 2 pork products in my already unhealthy breakfast. I fried up the bacon, then the eggs and nice thick Sourdough bread in the bacon grease. Really not so different than my usually weekend breakfast, just much greasier. I’ve never fried bread in bacon grease but damn it was tasty, I might have to do this while camping when I need a hearty meal. There were a few other solid breakfasts, cream of wheat and boiled eggs, but fried eggs are my thing. A bit of black coffee and I was feeling great.

Dinner was much more involved. The recipe in the book was much larger than we needed and had the ability to cook so it was cut in half. Lannister Beef with Horseradish is basically just Rump Roast and veggies in a slow cooker but it turned out pretty great. Because we had to adjust the recipe the meat got a bit overcooked but the gravy made from the drippings helped out with that. I was a little worried about the horseradish but I couldn’t really taste it at all and we didn’t cut the amount of that at all. I’d double it for next time. All the vegetables turned out great and I tried a Rutabaga for the first time.

The book is filled with mouthwatering recipes and I wish I had a kitchen that could handle some of them. There are a few recipes for ribs that I would jump on if I had room for a grill or would modify for a smoker. If you are feeling adventurous and have the resources there are also recipes for venison, aurrochs, pickled pigs feet, snails, locusts, and elk.

Kistler also included a desserts and drinks section with lots of beer recipes I would love to brew. I may have to talk Arse-bot into trying Direwolf Ale. There are a few cocktails but none of them sounded appetizing to me, interesting looking but not my kind of drink. If I had any creme de menthe around I would go for the Pyromancers’ Wildfire, Grand Marnier, gold tequila and creme de menthe layered and ignited.

If you want to get your hands on a copy it’s available from Amazon

Glee Cancelled?

In what only seems like FOX not understanding a single person in their audience it seems Glee will officially end at the end of next year’s 4th season. Chris Colfer who plays Kurt Hummel on the show quickly sent out a tweet saying:

I’m sorry fans but it’s true, at least we have one last season to polish things off.

Ian Brennan one of the writers and creators of the show sent out a tweet which was quickly taken down but it’s caused a crazy amount of buzz all over the internet. It said:

They told us it was because our show was becoming too liberal.

The tweet was quickly taken down and replaced with:

We love our fans and we’re going to give you the best final season anyone could ask for!

So what do you think? Is FOX really becoming too conservative? Is Glee too liberal? Can you believe all this hooplah?

Google Maps 8-bit Beta shows Geeky Promise

Google Maps premiered a brand new beta functionality today that allows you to search areas and map out directions in 8-bit. Although in Beta, it shows some seriously geeky promise and is probably the coolest thing any travel/map website has done to date!

When you enter into the beta, the world comes up in brilliant, 8-bit glory. If you look at the United States, for instance, mountain ranges are brought up as little peaks and major forests appear as the cute little trees reminiscent of the first Final Fantasy. The colors are classic and even the little street view icon looks like an old-school, 8-bit warrior.

 8BitUS

Coincidentally, I am currently half-way through re-locating across the United States to Los Angeles, California from my former home in New England. At this very moment, I’m at a hotel in Nebraska, so I thought it would be fun to check out my journey in this new 8-bit version. To put my review simply, I think this is unbelievably cool and wish I could make my Garmin GPS go 8-bit for the rest of the journey! The street-view is still a bit ugly (they’re obviously trying to find a good way to render street-view in 8-bit and it must be tough), but I have faith that even that aspect will come together once this officially “launches.” A big high five to whoever at Google came up with this, and thanks to Google for allowing their team to remain innovative and awesome.

Check out the amazing (possibly April Fool’s Day inspired?) promo video here and then head on over to Google Maps to give it a spin!
