Live-Action ‘Halo’ Web Series Coming

As much as I’d like for it to happen, it seems that the idea of a Halo live-action film ever being made is little more than a fanboy dream at this point, but perhaps a live-action web series featuring Master Chief will light a fire for that project once again.

Variety is reporting that a live-action Halo web series will be released in the weeks leading up to the release of Halo 4 on November 6 of this year. The series will be titled “Halo: Forward Unto Dawn” and will consist of five episodes each with a running time of around 15 minutes.

“Forward Unto Dawn” [will tell] an original story about the game’s Master Chief and how he inspired a young UNSC cadet who will eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC Infinity spacecraft. Introduction of the new character will tie in with the plot of “Halo 4,” while providing a flashback to the beginning of the “Halo” franchise’s war between the humans and the evil Covenant.

Frank O’Connor, 343i’s Development Director noted that there has always been a lot of excitement surrounding the various live-action Halo commercials that have been released over the years, and that excitement was one of the drivers that led to the creation of this web series.

“We want to see more so that we can explore the ‘Halo’ universe a little bit more,” said Frank O’Connor, franchise development director at 343 Industries. “Demand grew more and more out of the two little vignettes we’d previously produced.”

“Playing the games and reading the books or other “Halo” spinoffs is “a big commitment,” O’Connor said. “We needed a way to ensure there was a way for people to get onboard this universe without feeling intimidated.” As a result, the Web series is “an origins story that teaches you about a lot of different facets of the (‘Halo’) universe.

There is no question that the Halo franchise is huge, and fans have been hoping for a live-action adventure set in that universe for some time now. While this web series certainly isn’t the film many were hoping for, it sounds like Microsoft is sparing no expense to ensure this series is top notch. I’m not sure if this series will reach the audience beyond the Halo fans like they are hoping, but I know those of us who are fans of the series will be checking these out as they lead up to the release of Halo 4.

Watch for “Halo: Forward Unto Dawn” to be released on Halo Waypoint in late September/Early October this year.

And the Villain in Star Trek 2 is . . .

After a lot of speculation, word has finally come down that it looks like Benedict Cumberbatch will, indeed, be playing Khan in the sequel to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. Trek Movie has confirmed this with their sources, and consider this to longer be a rumor:

A few outlets have also reported (including today’s AICN) that this villain was Trek’s most famous bad guy – the exiled Eugenics War leader Khan Noonien Singh (originally played by Ricardo Montalban). TrekMovie has also confirmed this with a number of sources so we no longer consider it to be a rumor. Khan is back in 2013, however sources indicate that the film is not a rehash of “Space Seed,” the original Star Trek episode where Kirk and crew first encounter the genetic superman from the past.

In addition to the confirmation that Khan will be the menace the crew of the Enterprise faces in the upcoming film, Trek Movie has also confirmed that Leonard Nimoy will be back at Spock Prime, and that Klingons will play a big role.

As a Trek fan, I couldn’t be happier. These rumors have been circulating for a while now and come as not much of a surprise; Khan and the Klingons played a big role in the original Star Trek films, and I am looking forward to seeing Abrams’ take on these important aspects of Trek lore. I’m also glad to see Nimoy coming back as Spock Prime, even if it is in a minor role. While I love Kirk and so many of the other crew members from the Trek of yesterday, I’m really happy to see Spock playing a role in this alternate time line and fleshing out this character in his twilight years.

This sequel to Abrams’ Star Trek will be hitting theaters next year.

Anime/Manga Update: 4/30/2012 – Let’s Brighten up your Monday!

This week we’ve got another very adorable Hatsune Miku video, new stuff from Viz Media Digital, an amazing cosplay music video montage and a car of the future. It’s Monday, but let’s make that Monday a bit brighter!

First up:

(Via Nico Nico Douga and A.N.N.):  It was only a matter of time before somebody made an adorable (and totally awesome) live action/cosplay Hatsune Miku music video! The performer of the song (which is called “Kotatsumuri” – I believe meaning “under the Kotatsu”?) created this video to bring it to life (even more so than Hatsune Miku would normally). I absolutely love the inspiration and creativity that comes from all things Volcaloid, and I can’t wait to see even more innovation in the future!

Second this Week: Viz Media creates the new “Viz Labs” to drive their already awesome digital content innovation:

Press Release date: April 23rd, 2012 – VIZ MEDIA CREATES VIZ LABS

TO DRIVE DIGITAL CONTENT INNOVATION

New Division To Be Led By Gagan Singh

San Francisco, CA, April 23, 2012 – VIZ Media, the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga, graphic novels and anime in North America, announced the formation of VIZ Labs, a new division of the company led by Gagan Singh, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. VIZ Labs will focus on innovation in digital content distribution, and will consolidate engineering and digital business efforts across the company into one group. VIZ Media has recently been selectively acquiring engineering talent, and that acquisition strategy will continue under VIZ Labs.

“Innovation in distribution is an integral part of VIZ Media’s future,” said Ken Sasaki, President and CEO of VIZ Media. “As a long-time partner of the company, Gagan helped us shape our digital content strategy, and we’re delighted to have him join our team full time.”

VIZ Labs and Singh are responsible for integrating technology across the entire company, including the digital platforms for VIZ Manga and VIZ Anime. Prior to joining VIZ Media, Singh was the Founder and CEO of West Side Labs, a long time technology partner for VIZ Media.  With advanced degrees from Harvard, MIT and UC Berkeley, Singh joins VIZ Media with a wealth of experience.

“I am honored and excited to join VIZ Media,” said Singh. “With all VIZ Media has already accomplished in building a digital content platform, there is still phenomenal opportunity and growth potential for the company. VIZ Labs will be the tip of the spear to drive the innovation that brings the manga & anime our fans love through their preferred digital platform.”

Over the past 18 months, VIZ Media has transformed the traditional manga and anime business through a variety of strategic partnerships and digital platforms, making manga and anime more accessible than ever before. VIZ Media’s anime titles rank among the most popular streaming entertainment series online, thanks to partnerships with Apple, Hulu and Netflix. The VIZ Manga digital platform was an industry breakthrough, making high-quality, legal translations of the world’s most loved manga available at VIZManga.com and the VIZ Manga apps for iPhone®, iPod® touch and iPad®. VIZ Media took things even further when it introduced WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA, a digital manga anthology making the most popular manga series in the world available in the United States within two weeks of their original Japanese release, faster than ever before in the history of the industry. VIZ Labs will announce its first major initiative and VIZ Media’s next digital platform this summer.

Last on deck: I’ve got a fun coslplay music video and an amazing ‘car of the future’-style picture to share with you.

xbox car

XBox Daily News shared this fun image with us that makes me wonder – could we actually drive cars like this one day? It is both the greatest and most terrible idea ever.

and finally – another amazing Cosplay Music Video montage by Ackson Lee. He’s a genius, and every time I watch one of these I want to dance the night away! This one’s from last year, but totally worth sharing if you haven’t stumbled across it yet. I dare you to watch his channel and not want to dance!

TRAILER: The Dark Knight Rises #3

Well, I’m officially more excited for this movie now than I was. I tried to hold off until I could see it on the big screen with Avengers, but staring at the link to the youtube, I just couldn’t help it.

It looks like it starts with Knightfall and goes into a Knightsend type of story? That would be very cool.

But does it seem to anyone else like Batman is giving himself the option of giving his life to Gotham? I wouldn’t put it past Christopher Nolan to kill Batman, just to be sure no one else could make a sequel in his universe.

It hits cinemas in July.

UPDATE: Is anyone else getting a Dick Grayson vibe from Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

REVIEW: Game of Thrones 2.5

Game of Thrones S02E05 “The Ghost of Harrenhal”

By Bobot Fett

Warning! Spoilers for S02E05 and Book #2 (A Clash of Kings) included!

Season 2 reaches its midway point with another epic episode as the game of thrones loses a potential king but adds a potential queen!

It has been a hard year for the House Baratheon. The battle between brothers comes to a close as Stannis’ demon spawn stabs (no pun intended) Renly. The moment is over quickly but the repercussions promise to echo through the remainder of the season and beyond. With Stannis’ war fleet approaching Storm’s End new alliances are formed in the wake of Renly’s death. Stannis gets Renly’s army, Catelyn gets Bri, and Baelish gets the Tullys. Margery, played by Natalie Dormer, continues to steal every scene she is in. Her sheepish cry of not wanting to be a queen is immediately devoured by her appetite to be “The Queen”. It’s a brilliant and subtle delivery and you immediately believe her capable of doing whatever it takes to achieve her goals. Renly’s death is also a very strong scene for Brienne. Her refusal to leave his side is as painful as her vows of revenge and her fealty to Catelyn is obvious. Though I enjoy the character, if I was not a hardened Westeros veteran I might wonder at her motivation. We as a TV audience have been given little to no back story on the Beauty of Tarth, leaving her almost religious loyalty to Renly unexplained. With such a massive story and so many characters HBO has done a masterful job balancing the show but a huge amount of emotional weight is lost if we don’t understand why the characters make the decisions they do.

Though the infighting amongst the Baratheon family is over, the Lannisters and Greyjoys keep up the good fight. Tyrion (demon monkey) and Cersei’s (incestuous whore) weekly spar puts Tyrion on the trail of wildfire, the original source of the Targaeryan’s power. Soon enough in classic Tyrion style those working for Cersei are working for him and her plans are his. On the Iron Isles, Theon continues his quest for respect. On a reeking dock (see what I did there) Theon is dominated not only by his sister but by his own crew. But soon, with a little help Theon hatches a plan that could flood the winter in blood.

Arya continues to bear the cup for Tywin Lannister leaving her trapped and vulnerable, but old debts must be paid and she soon gains a deadly ally. Here the rapid fire nature of the show, in comparison to the book, fails the series. Arya’s request for the death of the Tickler might seems crazy when Joffrey and Cersei still live only because the TV audience has not seen her suffer at his hands like the readers have. The remaining living Starks don’t have much to do this episode. Jon continues to wander north of the wall in search of Mance Rayder. The sweeping arctic vistas, coupled with shots like Stannis’ approaching fleet, begin to build the epic scope the series often lacks. Bran continues to excel as Lord of Winterfell but his dreams foreshadow the storm of swords to come.

We close with Daenerys quartered in Qarth. A visit from the Warlocks leaves Dany with an invitation to the House of the Undying. Later Dany receives an invitation of a different sort when a marriage is proposed and a kingdom is offered. In a quiet scene with her bear Mormont we see Danerys the conqueror step out of the shade of the evening and into the fire of her destiny.

INTERVIEW: Jeff Grubb

The latest release from the Star Wars EU, Scourge, has been getting very good reviews and author Jeff Grubb was kind enough to give us some time to answer 10 questions about the project and the fandom. Scourge is a book set well after the events of Return of the Jedi and documents the struggles of a Jedi Master, his dealings with the Huts, and his quest to unravel the mystery of a murdered Jedi.

The book is available now.

Big Shiny Robot!: One of the big selling points of this book for a lot of people is that it was based on an RPG supplement. Can you talk about what went in to creating it in the first place?

Jeff Grubb: Scourge has its origin in Tempest Feud, a game adventure I wrote with Owen Stephens and Rich Redman for the Star Wars d20 Game from Wizards of the Coast. Adventures are a tough thing for most RPG games in that they are intended for use by only Gamemasters, as opposed to all the players of the game. In approaching the game, we wanted to create the adventure equivalent of a movie – big things happening on multiple planets, with a lot of cool toys for both the players and the GMs. I wrote the story, Owen did a lot of the cool toys, and Rich batted cleanup.

BSR!: How did you approach the adaptation?

JG: Tempest Feud provided the spine for the book’s plot, but the resulting novel became more than just adding protagonists and shaking well. Gaming and novels are different media, and have different demands. The game adventure is supposed to cover as many potential options that players may take (Their PCs may like the Hutts or not, they may have their own starship or not, they may play through the adventure directly or take a break between the acts). The novel has the advantage of a single through-line, as single set of choices driven by the characters.

The novel format also has the advantage that you do not have to stay with the protagonist at all times. Within an RPG, the camera is focused on the player characters at all times. Within the larger fiction format, I can change channels to show what is happening with the Spice Lord, and Koax, and the Bomu Clan Matriarch, so that when the characters encounter them, you have a deeper idea of who they are.

BSR!: Since the point of an RPG supplement is to create the backbone of a story for player characters to explore, how did you go about creating the most interesting character possible to fit into that spine you’d already created?

JG: In an RPG, an assumption is made that the players will be interested in whatever mystery or challenge you are presenting, for otherwise there is no game. In a novel, the protagonists’ personal drives and desires power them forward. I knew I had the hard spice Tempest from the adventure, and I wanted to make it very personal for my main protagonist. Mander is a “quiet Jedi” who would prefer to stay in his archives. What would be so major an event that would pull him from his work, and would make him the obvious choice to have to deal with it? And that was the moment when it became clear that Toro Irana would have to die.

BSR!: Was it difficult for you wading in the continuity nightmare of the EU?

JG: I was the continuity traffic cop for the Forgotten Realms for many years, so I am less than daunted by the challenges of an ever-growing shared universe. In this particular case, since the game product it was based upon was established canon a decade ago, I was my own source material.

BSR!: Was it for that reason you decided to gravitate toward all new characters?

JG: New characters were not a lock for this book. I had a number of story pitches that involved more traditional characters. Once we had settled on the plot coming out of Tempest Feud, putting established canon characters into it seemed to be forcing things a little. Mander Zuma is the main character for this book because he is ideally suited for what happens in this book.

BSR!: For the aspiring writers who read this space, what was your writing routine as you worked on Scourge?

JG: I worked from a relatively tight outline, one that contained all the plot points but gave the characters enough room to evolve as I wrote it. Often a character (like Eddey) will suddenly move in a different direction, and it makes more sense to go with it than fight it. I have a day job, so my work schedule is mostly nights and weekends. I have weekly (as opposed to daily) goals, and keep a log of chapter length next to the machine to chart both progress and see what chapters are too bulky and need to be pared down.

BSR!: This is very much a mystery story, taking turns like an old noir. What films or books do you look to when you’re looking for stories like that?

JG: I love noir. Raymond Chandler is a favorite author (the opening of his story “Red Wind” has been called one of the best paragraphs ever written), and I usually will watch old black and white movies on TCM. What I like about noir is that the protagonist is driven to do the right thing, even if it personally painful or destructive. So The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon are on my list, and the James Garner film Marlowe. But for wit and banter, I am a sucker for the Thin Man series (the movies are mysteries, but not noir). Oh, and Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant.

BSR!: How has it been, soaking in all the positive response the book has received thus far?

JG: Wonderful. I had been given a heads-up on how demanding the Star Wars readership can be, but I have found the feedback to be incredibly supportive for a first-time novelist in this universe.

BSR!: If you had the chance to write a Star Wars book in any other era, what would it be?

JG: Rise of the Empire, when the decay had set in but there was still hope for redemption. It is fated to be a downer (you know how the story must end), but you take the little victories that you can.

BSR!: Which Star Wars movie is your favorite and why?

JG: Empire, for a number of reasons, but one of the big ones is that Darth Vader rocks in it. In New Hope Tarkin was famously holding his leash, and in Jedi the Emperor strides onto center stage. But in Empire, Vader comes into his own as a threat, a capable leader, and someone you don’t want to have as your immediate superior.

Pre-Sale Tickets for The Avengers Bigger Than All the Films Leading Up to it Combined!

For those of you not lucky enough to attend a week-in-advance screening of The Avengers this week, we are still a week away from this geek-dream-come-true of a movie hitting the big screen. If you’re a geek like me, there is this feeling of excitement in the pit of your stomach in anticipation of watching Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and more joining forces to fight Loki and his minions, and it’s not going to go away until you finally see the film on or around May 4.

And it’s looking like we are not alone.

I think there is this general feeling that this movie is going to be huge – record-setting huge, and pre-sale ticket figures are so far adding fuel to this fire. Whether you were a fan of these characters before their big screen debut, or got into this world of superhero geekery after watching the films, it’s safe to say the public in general is anticipating this movie. MovieTickets.com provided what the pre-sale ticket number are looking like for The Avengers, and the numbers are pretty incredible. Pre-sale tickets for The Avengers are bigger than Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger combined.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is pre-selling more tickets for the upcoming release than the online ticketing company sold for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, THOR, IRON MAN 2, and IRON MAN combined at the same point in the sales cycle for each film. In fact, pre-sales of MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is over one and a half times that of these past Marvel films combined sales at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 3,995% more tickets than CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 1,034% more tickets than THOR at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 114% more tickets than IRON MAN 2 at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 1,406% more tickets than IRON MAN at the same point in the sales cycle.

12:05am on May 4 can’t come soon enough . . .

Mass Effect 3 Fans Continue to Campaign for a Better Ending With the “On/Off” Campaign

A lot has been said about the controversy surrounding the ending to Mass Effect 3, hell, I even wrote a handful of posts about it myself (which you can find here, here and here). After BioWare’s announcement a few weeks ago about releasing DLC that will expand on and add clarity to the ending, I really didn’t think that I’d find myself writing about it again until said DLC was actually released, but a new campaign by fans to provide “feedback on the importance of the Ending DLC” is going to kick off this Saturday and so here we are.

A bulk of the pandemonium surrounding the ending has died down, especially after BioWare’s announcement of incoming DLC to expand on the ending, but Mass Effect fans are a lively bunch and they want to make sure their voices are heard. The latest campaign is “Turn On/Turn Off BioWare“:

We propose giving EA and Bioware immediate feedback on the importance of the Ending DLC, so they can allocate sufficient resources to make a quality product.

To that end, we propose the following campaign:

We will turn ON our single player game during a pre-defined period to show EA/Bioware the number of passionate fans who love the series and who will continue to buy their products IF the DLC provides a satisfactory ending.

We will then turn OFF our game and refuse to play for a pre-defined time period to give EA/Bioware a clear idea of the potential loss of custom and support they will suffer if the DLC is NOT satisfying.

The idea of the campaign is to illustrate just how many Mass Effect (and BioWare) fans are out there, and what the potential loss of said fans would look like should BioWare/EA not provide a proper Ending DLC. It could potentially be a powerful illustration of the effects of a company hastily releasing a title before it’s actually ready for launch, or even a subpar product, but it could also turn out to be more fodder for the “entitled gamer” stigma.

I have wrote about how big of a fan I am of the Mass Effect series, and I have made no attempt to hide the fact that I felt the ending was pretty awful. The fact that BioWare listened to their fanbase and put into motion a plan to release DLC to improve on this ending was sufficient for me, and I anxiously wait to see what they come up with. Sure, it could be as equally bad and do nothing to solve the problems with the ending, and should that happen I will vote with my dollars when considering to purchase another BioWare game. Others were not so pleased by the Ending DLC announcement as they want a complete overhaul and different ending for the game. That’s fine, you can’t please everyone and I’m sure these people will also reconsider buying future BioWare titles if they are that displeased. We are the consumers, and our money is one of the greatest weapons we have in showing out distaste in sub-par products.

A lot of Mass Effect fans out there are looking forward (even if cautiously) to the Ending DLC BioWare/EA releases in hopes that it really will “fix” the ending to the game; filling in plot holes, adjusting nonsensical and contradictory dialogue, etc. But, as a Mass Effect fan, even I think these “campaigns” just need to stop. At first, I sympathized with the masses. The ending was truly not on par with the quality of the franchise up to that point, and there is nothing wrong with letting a company know your dissatisfaction with their product. Then the campaigns started, demanding that BioWare change the ending to their game. Complaints were filed with the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission, petitions were started, cupcakes were sent. Even at this point, while I may feel this was overkill and didn’t feel the desire to participate, I understood. People love this franchise, and they were expressing their passion for it.

Now we have this latest campaign, and now even I think it’s getting to be a bit ridiculous. A campaign aiming to let BioWare know the fans want them “to make an Ending DLC that is worthy of the rest of the game and then reap the rewards of their success.”? What is worthy? Is there a general consensus on what the ending should be that I’m not aware of? Is the popular belief that BioWare/EA is just going to push out some garbage to shut the fans up? The fact of the matter is what I believe would make a good ending may not be what other fans would like, and vice versa – what will make a “good” Ending DLC is completely arbitrary. I like to believe that the folks at BioWare know what is at stake here. There is a large and disappointed/angry fan-base out there that is not happy because of basic problems with the ending, not because they didn’t like it, and I’m sure they are fully aware that if they just pump out some throw-away DLC that does nothing to fix the actual problems that the blow-back will be even worse than the first time around. Do we really need a campaign to “ensure” this happens? I guarantee that even if BioWare were to release the best possible scenario for Ending DLC – whatever that is – there will still be some out there not pleased.

BioWare has announced Ending DLC that will, as they say, expand and add clarity to the ending. They have stated they have listened to the fan criticism that there were a lot of basic problems with the ending. I say we don’t need a campaign to let them know what’s at stake here. We as the consumers have made our voices heard, and BioWare has acknowledged that, now it’s time to wait and see what they craft to address the ending of Mass Effect 3.

Is The Avengers Actually A “Remake”?

I, like many of you, are very excited for the impending May 4th release of Marvel Studios The Avengers. What you may be surprised to know though, is that the silver screen epic is actually a remake! Not only that, but this is the 2nd time it has been remade! While the original movies are lost to time due to not being available on home video, thanks to the internet we can at least see the trailers for these epic films. First, the movie that started it all: 1952’s The Avengers!

-fCTokuOU_E

The most amazing thing about this film, aside from the absolutely dead-on Hulk and cameos by no less than 18 Marvel characters is the fact that the film debuted 9 years before the dawn of Marvel Comics! How is such a thing possible? I’ll get to that, but first, here’s the campy made-for-TV remake from 1978: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Man I swear, KISS was freaking everywhere in the late 70’s. Honestly I can’t say I’m too fond of this movie. Lou Ferrigno is still great as the Hulk, and this is was the best screen depiction of Tony Stark until Robert Downey Jr. However, I can’t abide by Reb Brown’s Captain America spending half the movie on a motorcycle like a low-grade Evel Knievel. Also, who’s idea was it to make Thor a beer-swilling viking? Thankfully, the new movie looks to erase the above movie’s bad memories, even if they aren’t using Skrulls this time out.

In all seriousness, these two clips are of course very clever fan-made YouTube offerings, but how cool would it be if they really existed? Well, the 50’s one anyway. Speaking of that masterpiece, the author actually has an annotated video to show all the cameos you may have missed. It’s pretty amazing how flawless it all looks.
