Ryan Reynolds as the Next Highlander?

Variety is reporting that the front-runner for the next Highlander film is none other than Ryan Reynolds, the boyish-looking nice guy in romantic comedies as well as the hunky katana-wielding Deadpool in the Wolverine movie.

This is all still very up in the air, though, as there’s no indication an official offer has been made, and Reynolds is reportedly weighing all his options.   But who wouldn’t want to join the Highlander franchise?  He’d have the chance to go around and say, “There can be only one!” and then chop off someone’s head.  Who wouldn’t want to go into work and do that every day?

His latest film release Safe House earned over $120 million, which more than earned back its $85 million production budget.  In Hollywood terms, that’s no doubt a hit (though nothing like the mega-success of Avengers), so he certainly has offers to consider.

Summit acquired the film rights in 2008, and the original films starred Christopher Lambert.

Without having seen him as Deadpool, I might doubt Reynolds’ abilities to portray an action character, but he has shown the ability to portray a variety of characters.  (I only saw a few minutes of Green Lantern and therefore cannot comment on his action abilities in that film).  But, I think he has range, and it will be interesting to see what happens next in the casting phase.

CBS Releases Trailer For Elementary

After the success of Sherlock, the modernized take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character, CBS decided “Hey, we could do that.” We heard about it last year, snippets of casting and location. Lucy Liu would be Joan Watson and Johnny Lee Miller our Sherlock. Nothing so bad there, female Watson could be interesting, although surely CBS will make it a sexual chemistry thing. It’ll take place in Manhattan, which is where CBS lost me. Sherlock Holmes has an encyclopedic knowledge of London, it helps him solve crimes and is part of the character. So either CBS would give us an American Holmes or one transplanted. Mostly I just figured CBS wouldn’t be able to recreate the quality of the BBC version. They have a million police procedural shows, why take a beloved character and force him into a mold he doesn’t fit?

Now that you’ve seen it what do you think?  A few things really make me wonder. Firstly, Sherlock being fresh out of Rehab seems a bit odd. In the books he occasionally used drugs and even had a bit of an opium habit, have they made him a recovering heroin addict? Secondly, he doesn’t seem very confident. Shaky voice and just a bit of a frightened look. Thirdly, they seem to have directly taken his coat and scarf from the BBC version. Super nitpicky I know but it bugged me a tad. Lastly, the tattoos. I have plenty of them myself and I have no issue with them but for me they just don’t fit Sherlock. Watson being hired by Holmes’ father to be his Sober Buddy doesn’t quite fit for me either, his brother would make more sense. I know it’s only a trailer and I because of that I think I may give it at least one episode possibly two to change my mind but right now it isn’t looking so good.

Am I being overly critical? Is there things about this you liked or other things that may turn you off of this? Let me know in the comments.

Friday ‘Flix Picks: The Good, The Bad, The Weird

Each Friday we will be bringing you weekend-viewing movie picks available for streaming on Netflix! From the popular to the obscure, we will browse Netflix’s Streaming library so you don’t have to, and bring you what we consider to be “Must Watch” selections!

The Good, The Bad, The Weird (English Subtitles)

Directed by Kim Ji-woon

Starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, and Jung Woo-sung

For this inagural “Friday ‘Flix Picks” I want to highlight a film that I have actually wanted to review for a very long time, The Good, The Bad, The Weird. This gem premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2008, but didn’t hit limited release in the US until April 2010. I stumbled upon a trailer for this film around that time and it stayed on my radar until it hit Netflix Instant – at which point I immediately set aside some time to watch it.

Inspired by Sergio Leone’s The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, this film harkins back to Spaghetti Westerns in all the right ways while incorporating an Asian flare into the story. The Good, The Bad, The Weird begins with a fantastic train heist in which a hitman (The Bad) has been hired to hijack a train to steal a treasure map from a Japanese diplomat. However, a thief (The Weird) on board the train steals the map first, and amidst the train’s derailment, is able to escape with it once  A bounty hunter (The Good) shows up to collect the bounty on The Bad. From this point on, the chase is on for The Weird and the treasure map with The Good, The Bad, a group of bandits, and the Japanese Imperial Army all in pursuit of the riches this map could lead to.

From this point on we are treated to shootouts between the various players, insights into the backgrounds of The Good, The Bad, and The Weird, and an overall exciting time as these various groups all chase down a treasure map said to lead to unimaginable fortune. The film culminates in a fantastic climax as all the forces after the map bear down on The Weird simultaneously, all fighting each other as they chase him across the desert with The Good and The Bad in pursuit as well, navigating the war being waged all around them. I don’t want to give away the ending obviously, but I will say that I quite enjoyed it – even if it does become predictable in the final moments and revelations.

Director Kim Ji-woon really knows his way around a western film, and I would dare say the The Good, The Bad, The Weird stands its ground to the great westerns from decades passed. The action and chase sequences are exciting, and the characters are well fleshed-out with rich histories providing reasons for their actions throughout the film. If you are a fan of the western genre, then add The Good, The Bad, The Weird to your Netflix Instant Queue, it will make for a perfect viewing this weekend!

Joss Whedon Unsure About Returning to Direct “Avengers” Sequel

Okay, no need to panic yet, but despite being a $1 Billion+ success in the box office and receiving high praise all across the board, Joss Whedon is “torn” about returning for another go with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“You know, I’m very torn,” Whedon said in a sit-down interview in Beverly Hills before the film’s U.S. opening. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

[LA Times, Hero Complex]

I mentioned on the latest Big Shiny Podcast that my excitement level for an Avengers sequel is going to be directly tied to whether or not Joss Whedon directs it. Are there other capable directors out there that could take on such a film? Sure. But Whedon has set the bar so damn high, the only person I could envision once again meeting this level of awesome, or even exceeding it, is Joss Whedon.

That said, we are still at least three years away from a sequel to The Avengers, and the film has only been out in the states for two weeks with many fans returning for second, third and fourth viewings. The excitement is still there so it may be too soon to start talking – or worrying – about what will come in the sequel. Not to mention we have a ton of Marvel movies coming at us between now and then with Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain America 2 all ready to get rolling.

So, yes, the mere thought of Joss Whedon not coming back to direct the sequel to The Avengers is a sad one. But for right now lets continue to enjoy the Avengers movie he has given us, in all its glory! I think I may have enjoyed The Avengers even more on my second viewing than the first, and I plan to see it at least one more time before it leaves theaters. I’m sure as we move forward over the next few years, Whedon will have a better idea if he would like to return to direct a sequel, but I’m guessing for right now he is probably still reeling from the monster success of this first Avengers film and Summer of 2015 is pretty far off in his mind.

Should Joss Whedon not return to direct a sequel (GASP!), who do you think could bring us a worthy follow-up to The Avengers?

Anime Update: Toonami Returns May 26th!

Just a few hours ago, Cartoon Network released a splash page and tweeted to their followers: “Attention Toonami faithful: We heard you. On 5/26/12 Toonami is back bitches.”

Diablo 3 finally came out and now Toonami is coming back to Cartoon Network? This is a really good week! No news yet as to what shows will be coming to the programming block, but I’m willing to bet that after the long absence of Toonami we’ll be pleased with the selection. I’m also hoping that Steve Blum will be back to voice our favorite Toonami mascot, Tom (pictured at left).

Here are some of my favorite, classic Toonami promos to get you back in the mood for the upcoming night of awesomeness that will be May 26th!

How a Five Year Old Met the Avengers

I sat down on my lunch break this afternoon ready to tear Michael Bay a new one for the continued crimes he continues to commit against the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was mad, geek-raging even, but then in the midst of reading up on the subject I received an instant message from our co-founder, Kill-tacular-tron.

<the tmnt news is lame>
<and this is awesome>

He shot me over a link to g33kwatch.com called ‘Story of a Five Year Old Avenger, Meeting the Avengers’. I clicked over to the site and immediately recognized an image that has been circulating the internet for at least several days now – of a young boy on Tom Hiddleston’s (Loki) shoulders, holding on to his Captain America shield (left). Of course having seen the photo before, I had been curious about who this lucky kid was, assuming it had to be a son of someone involved with filming The Avengers. Turns out the story of just who this kid is and how he got his picture taken sitting on Loki’s shoulders is far more heart-warming than that.

From g33kwatch.com:

The boy on Loki’s shoulders is none other than Edison, son of our good friend Erin who directs the web series CASTERS. The story of how Edison got his picture taken with Tom Hiddleston is a great case of “Right place, right time” that Erin was kind enough to write about for us.

What I read is a great story of a five-year old kid out shopping for school supplies with his mom who was directed to be in the right place at the right time by his geek dad. With the help of some very kind security folks, and Chris Evans’ mom, got waved at by Thor, a picture take atop Loki’s shoulders, walked along side Hawkeye and Black Widow, was smiled at by Iron Man, had photos snapped with his hero, Captain America, briefly met Joss Whedon, and became an adorable internet sensation by simply being the boy who got to meet his heroes. After I finished reading this story, I cleared my geek-ranting post on Bay’s “Adult Alien Not-Ninja Turtles” and opted to bring attention to this instead – which I feel is a thousand-times more interesting, and frankly, just a better story for your afternoon reading pleasure.

Hat’s off to you, young Edison, and your awesome story. You are the envy of every young geek – both in age and spirit – out there right now.

I encourage all of you to take ten minutes out of your day to read this compelling story behind “The Boy With the Shield”. I assure you you won’t regret it.

Evans crouches down next to Edison, who extends his hand and shakes the hand of The First Avenger. “Can I see your shield?” Evans asks and Edison hands his battered toy shield over. “Wow, you’re getting a lot of use out of this. You fighting a lot of bad guys with this?” he asks. Chris Evans and Edison proceed to have a conversation about the finer points of shields and fighting the enemy.

10 Years of Attack of the Clones

I’ve always sort of divided my life into eras based on the releases of Star Wars movies. Laugh if you like, but major changes in my life always seemed to coincide with them. The release of the Special Editions marked the beginning of my independence as a teenager. The Phantom Menace opened the chapter of my life that saw me pursuing (and fulfilling) dreams of writing and filmmaking.

As we approach the 10 year anniversary of Attack of the Clones (which hit theatres May 16, 2002), it seemed fitting for me to look back on one of the most important changes in my life: becoming a father.

The Star Wars movies were always important for me as a coping skill. The various VHS releases were the escape I needed to survive a physically and verbally abusive father. The Phantom Menace was the tonic I needed to deal with the separation of my parents, and my father from me. In the lead up to Attack of the Clones, I’d gotten married and my wife was expecting our first child.

The child’s due date coincided with the release of the film, but I counted on the fact that the unborn kid shared enough of my DNA to let me see the film opening weekend in peace. I caught it five times, reveling in the movie each time. I know now that I see Star Wars as it should be, not necessarily as others do, and Attack of the Clones hit all the right notes of romance, action, and tragedy in my mind.

Everyone says the birth of your first child is supposed to be the greatest day of your life. Not so for me. May 22, 2002, a mere 6 days (and 10 viewings) after the release of Episode II, was perhaps one of the most terrifying days of my life.

After hours and hours of a difficult labor, my would-be newborn’s heart stopped.

An emergency C-section had to be performed and the nurses forgot to remove me from the O.R. My wife was laying on a table, cut open, bleeding, unconscious, my baby wasn’t breathing. I was convinced through teary eyes that I was reliving the end of A Farewell to Arms.

I could hear doctors behind a curtain, silhouetted by bright lights, performing CPR on the child. A nurse stopped to reassure me. “We’re doing everything we can for your son.”

“It’s a boy?”

“Yes. You didn’t know?”

“No… But his name is Anakin.”

As they ushered me out of the room, I heard him cry out once. He was alive. Barely. The doctor’s collapsed one of Anakin’s lungs reviving him, so he had to be transferred to a Newborn ICU at a different hospital, three cities away.

I spent the next four days and sleepless nights dividing my time between my newborn son and convalescing wife. Once she was discharged from the hospital, she could keep a vigil over our little padawan, who would spend another week on feeding tubes and being constantly monitored, and I would have a break.

“It’s okay,” she told me. “I know you want to go. You deserve it. We’ll be fine.”

And she was right.

Rest was a reclining theatre chair and a matinee of Attack of the Clones. Not since the whole ordeal had begun had I become so relaxed. That escape allowed gratitude and relief to wash over me in the form of a star crossed love story at the onset of The Clone Wars. As the bright yellow Star Wars logo flashed on the screen and the theme song burst from the speakers, I knew everything was okay.

It’s hard to believe, especially looking at my Anakin today, that all of that happened ten years ago this week, but every time I watch the film, I feel grateful to it for getting me through the most difficult time I’ve ever had. I love that movie.

Isn’t that what our favorite movies are always most about? Not the movies the themselves, but the personal stories and feelings we attach to them.

That’s just a few of a thousand reasons that the force of Star Wars will be with me…  Always…

TRAILER: True Blood – Season 5

Last night just before Game of Thrones HBO premiered this trailer. At first I wasn’t paying much attention because the first few seconds made it seem like it was just a small grouping of clips but then things got interesting. I don’t want to spoil anything for people so I won’t mention who he is playing but Christopher Meloni of Law and Order looks like he’ll have a decent role this season. Some more fairy light hand power seems to play a pretty big part this season as well. What stood out to you folks?

TRAILER: Revolution

Revolution is a drama coming out on NBC this fall and it stars Giancarlo Esposito. For those of us in the know he is one of the best actors on Breaking Bad (if you haven’t been watching you should). This new show has some titan executive producers behind it such as J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and Eric Kripke (The creator of Supernatural). The lengthy trailer has hit the internet and clocks in at 4:20 and it looks like it’s going to be pretty fantastic. The basic premise is that suddenly all electricity around the entire world has fizzled out all at once and the story starts 15 years later after the world has now gotten used to no electricity of any kind. The pilot is directed by Jon Favreau. Here’s the trailer for anyone interested. What say you internet? Look’s like it might be pretty good.
