DCUO: New Cinematic Trailer and February Content

IGN UK has revealed a new cinematic for DC Universe Online produced by Blur studios. This cinematic follows up on the one that was debuted last year which saw a bleak future with heroes and villains killing each other. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but one of the heroes believed to be dead isn’t as we find out in this new movie. Blur has also done beautiful cinematics for the forthcoming SW: The Old Republic MMO along with The Force Unleashed II television spots. They are also working with producer David Fincher on the upcoming movie “The Goon” based on Eric Powell’s comic book from Dark Horse. I think this is a beautiful looking cinematic and helps progress the story of DCUO as we learn whether or not we can trust Lex Luthor. If you want to see some of their other work you can check them out on their official website.

Also released today was a teaser video for the first bit of “monthly” content we will see. Each month will spotlight or revolve around a different character. February will see a group of quests revolving around Catwoman. This new content that will be coming out February 15th. A breakdown of what will be included in the update will be after the video:

SOE has been hyping a classic character playing a large role in this batch of content, and it turns out it’s Catwoman. Selina Kyle is going to factor into a few new parts to DCUO.

New Duo: A two-player Bane duo will be available for players.

Level 30 Catwoman Episode: Here, your character will race to Gotham Museum and find Catwoman robbing the joint. Then, some ancient Egyptian artifacts turn people into lions and tigers that you have to fight. Look for five boss battles in this mission.

Buy and Sell: Auction houses will go live in the Watchtower and the Hall of Doom so that places can swap gear on a massive scale.Additions: New collections, races and investigations will be added.

Legends PVP: Catwoman will now be playable in “Play as Iconic” PVP.

Multiplayer Race: Chase Catwoman with your friends.

New Loot: You’ll now be able to collect the “ancient Mayan Armor” and “Cat Burglar” gear.

Collectable Hearts: Completing races, participating in PVP and other actions will earn you hearts that you can use to purchase chocolates and gifts to give to other players.

Valentine’s Day ContentBelieve it or not, February is for lovers — and now, DCUO is, too. In a rather interesting move, the Goddess of Love is pissed and has put down fountains across Metropolis. Enter one of these, and you’ll be transported to a 100-person instance where you’ll play as a cherub and battle “to determine the true meaning of love.”

New Tier 2 Raid: There’s a new eight-player raid zone for the Batcave. You’ll fight alongside Batman against Brainiac and Brother Eye.

PVP Battles: Dunk the other team into the fountain.Love Alert: This is a four-player boss fight against the Goddess of Love, Devotion and Scorn.

Loot: There’s a new harlequin clown suit with hearts and a cherub disguise to earn.

Mock the Boss: When you replay boss fights, you’ll be able to give them “be mine” cards for Feat points.

PVP Expansion: There will be a new Gotham PVP zone.

TONS of New Spidey Set Pics!

We have seen a lot of pics come from the set of Marc Webb’s Spider-Man film – and they just keep rolling in.

By now we have all gotten a good look at the new costume, lines have been drawn, opinions have been set – but, now we get to see some photos of this Spider-Man in action! There are some reports rolling in that the man in this costume performing the “stunt” is indeed Peter Parker himself, Andrew Garfield, but there is no way to be 100% positive of this. Either way these are some pretty cool photos to check out!

Marc Webb’s untitled Spider-Man film hits theaters on July 3, 2012!

The Geek Show #3

Every week for about 2 1/2 years the fellows from the Geek Show Podcast have been bringing you an excellent, hilarious, geeky hour of geekiness every week. For almost two of those years, I have been producing a video version of their show for Xfinity’s Utah On Demand system. Their licensing agreement was such that the content was exclusive to them, but we’ve since worked it so that it is only a window of exclusivity and now we’ll be getting the show every week on the internet.

Be sure to check out their website and subscribe to their podcast. The show’s regular panelists includes Kerry Jackson, host of X96′s Radio From Hell, Leigh George Kade from Grimmleigh’s Fiends, Shannon Barnson, my co-host at the Pub Quiz, Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin from the Big Movie Mouth-Off, and Scott Pierce, television critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

The Geek Show will be putting the video up on their website, and we’ll be putting it up here as well… You know… Since I produce it, damn it.

As a warning, these appear in their original NSFW form.

Avenger Actress “Short List”

I had a feeling this was coming, I could feel it in the back of my head when I was writing the story on Sam Jackson revealing that he’d have a female sidekick in the Avengers movie. Lo-and-behold, look what showed up.

Heat Vision on THR is claiming to have an exclusive on the short list of actresses that will apparently be reading for the role of Nick Fury’s sidekick in the upcoming Avengers film. The actress the studio decides to go with will sign a nine picture deal – same as Jackson’s – and will fill the shoes of the unnamed Marvel character who will serve as his right-hand lady. Here’s the list from THR:

  • [Morena] Baccarin, repped by ICM and Seven Summits, may have an edge since the actress did star in Whedon’s short-lived sci-fi TV series Firefly and its subsequent film spinoff, Serenity.
  • [Jessica] Lucas, repped by Gersh and Thruline Entertainment, was one of the stars of Melrose Place, appears in TV’s Friends With Benefits and has a role in Big Momma’s House 3.
  • [Cobie] Smulders, repped by UTA and Roar, is best known for her work in CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.
  • [Mary Elizabeth] Winstead, who played Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, next stars in Universal’s The Thing, the remake of the 1982 John Carpenter horror movie. She is repped by CAA.

Of course, if this list is accurate, Baccarin may have the inside track since she has previously worked with Whedon, and let’s face it, the guy is known for sticking by his favorite FireFly cast members.

Honestly, I’m always a bit hesitant about these purported actor/actress “short-lists” for these roles because it seems like any time one of these are released a week later an actor is announced for the role that was never even on the list. So, while I have no doubt that these names may be being thrown around for the role, take this list lightly!

MOUTH-OFF REVIEW: Red State

Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin made it through Sundance alive and are back with their first video review.

This time they’re here to review Kevin Smith’s Red State. They scored tickets to the last screening. And you can even hit their facebook page to watch the Q&A with Kevin Smith that they filmed. You can check that out here.

But without further ado, here’s their review:

Even MORE New Cap Pictures!

At this point, my fingers are actually sick of typing the words “New Captain America Photos!” But, it’s a new day and with it comes new Captain America pictures! These pictures come from the issue of Empire with Chris Evans as Cap on the cover we showed you earlier this week.

Not really much to say about these, pretty much the standard that we’ve been seeing over the last few weeks, but cool to see none-the-less! You can click the first three images below for bigger, higher-res (sorta) versions, enjoy!

Jackson Confirms Fury Cameos

Last night Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson, was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and spilled a few tidbits. He said that he will have a cameo (or, cameo’s) in both, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor! He also slyly added that in The Avengers he will have a female sidekick who is with him at all times. Perhaps a Maria Hill character? Will is be Black Widow again? A different female Avenger? Personally, I think it would be awesome to see them bring in someone like Jessica Drew a la Spider-Woman to really mix things up.

You can check out the video of the interview below and leave your comments at the bottom!

Who do you think will be Fury’s “sidekick” in the Avengers film? Or, who would you like to see as his sidekick? Leave your thoughts below!

This Week IN Comics

Big Shiny Robot! has a weekly column in the Salt Lake City alt-weekly IN Magazine and every week we bring it to you on the site.

If you live in the greater Salt Lake area, you can pick up a copy of IN Magazine up from one of their ubiquitous newsstands, and we would highly suggest that you do.

You can read the online version of the story here.

Just FYI, sometimes I have to hit the theme of the issue and this is their annual “Sexy in SLC” issue…  So, that’s why we’re talking about how sexy reading comic books is.

Photo and New Details on Bucky!

Seems like we have seen a lot of pictures released of Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers lately, but have seen next to nothing of Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Well, aside from a super low-quality picture leaked today, the LA Times has fixed that and included a little insight to the character from the Director, Joe Johnston:

“We took some liberties with the relationship between the two guys,” Johnston said. “In our story, Bucky is already in the service, he’s already joined up and is being sent overseas while Steve is still struggling to get in the army. That’s different than what you may have read in the comics. It adds a nuance to the relationship that pays off later. They’re closer in age, too — they’re virtually the same age. That’s not the case at all if you go back to the old comics.”

In the film, both Rogers and Barnes are orphans and grow up almost as brothers. Rogers is too sickly to enlist in the service and instead he volunteers for a dangerous and secret experiment that might make him the first of an army of super-soldiers. That fact changes the physics of his friendship with Bucky, and the movie jettisons the hero’s almost paternal treatment of Bucky. This version of Bucky Barnes is less wise-cracking and more of a crack shot with his service rifle.

Johnston didn’t mention specifically if we would see Bucky turn into the Winter Soldier, but I could see Rogers’ paternal treatment of Bucky, as Johnston mentions, inciting some feelings of resentment from him and we could possibly see him start down that path – but that is just all speculation at this point. You can read a little more about what Johnston had to say about the character and his relationship with Cap via the link above!

Captain America: The First Avenger hit theaters on July 22, but you can get your first look at the film during the Super Bowl this Sunday!
