Firefly Writers Up For a Comeback

Just under a week ago the internet was a-buzz when Nathan Fillion mentioned he would be up for once again filling the Captain shoes on the Serenity on the heels of the announcement that The Science Channel would be running the Firefly series in its entirety. It looks like Mr. Fillion isn’t the only one who’d be up for more intergalactic old west adventures. Two writers from the series took to Twitter the following day to show their support and willingness to revisit the series.

First, Jose Molina, who is the executive producer of Haven and wrote the Firefly episodes “Trash” and “Ariel,” tweeted a few hours ago that “For what it’s worth, I’ve told him I’d drop what I was doing and follow.”

Replying to Molina, Jane Espenson, who is the co-creator of Syfy’s Warehouse 13 and wrote the “Shindig” episode of Firefly, added, “I’m there, if needed.”

So, could this be enough to convince FOX – who still own the rights – to take another look at their decision to cancel the series? As hard as it is for me to admit, it’s not likely. A lot of pieces would have to fall in place at the right time considering much of the cast have moved on to new, successful television series.

Not only did Nathan Fillion’s remarks spark some interest in some former crew, it of course got the fans of Firefly motivated. The plan? Help Nathan Fillion raise $300 million to buy the rights to Firefly! The goal seems to be a bit lofty, but it shows just how much love the fans of the show have!

I, just like all of you, would love to see Firefly make a comeback – hell, I’d settle for a Serenity sequel! But unfortunately, it’s ultimately up to FOX right now with regards to what happens to the series in the near future. Are the chances of ever seeing Firefly return in some form or another zero? The optimist in me says no, but right now, unfortunately, the chances are slim. Hopefully the fans will continue to be vocal and use this new found momentum to our advantage and having the series running on cable again may help generate even more love for the series to help the cause!

Secret Origins: Static!

Today is a sad day in the comics world, as Dwayne McDuffie has passed away. While the man is gone, his work is a fine legacy to leave behind. In honor of the man and his accomplishments, I wanted to feature the character, who is probably the most well-known of McDuffie’s creations. While you may know him from the cartoons, Virgil Hawkins first appeared on the printed page. I am of course, talking about Static, a fine hero in the Spider-Man tradition. Let’s get on with the show, shall we?

Revealing your secret identity in the second issue? Static is a trendsetter.

As implied above, Static just got out of a bit of a scrape in the previous issue, Static had the situation well in hand, but you see, well, something found out kind of threw him off his game, as we’ll see. Virgil (Static) Hawkins is kind of feeling a bit sorry for himself, while Frieda, is playing the role of good friend and making him face up to his demons. She will eventually become one of Virgil’s closest confidants, but I’m getting ahead of myself. As Virgil’s wounds are tended to, Frieda just straight up asks him how he became a superhero, so we get to jump right into it.

Virg tells Frieda that the whole thing actually started the day they met. She kind of horns in on a conversation Virgil is having with Larry, a student he has been tutoring. Frieda joins the conversation due to a geek joke that Virg makes, and she asks about Larry, and we get to see a bit of what makes Virgil such a stand out character.

Seriously, what's not to like about this kid?

Larry departs, but before Virg and Frieda can really make acquaintances, she’s accosted by the truly repulsive “Biz Money B”, a privileged kid who thinks he owns the place. To Frieda’s credit, she’s just about as sharp with her tongue as Virgil. Virgil is giving color commentary on her witty repartee, from the sidelines, and eventually Frieda makes her exit, telling Virgil she’ll call him later. This leaves Biz and Virgil alone. Anyone who was a nerd in school can tell you this is not a good thing. “Biz” in between some truly horrendous racial slurs and even more horrendous “rhymes”, takes his frustrations out on Virgil’s face…

KTANNG -- The sound of jock/nerd opression.

Mercifully, Larry returns and breaks up the “fight”. The damage is done though, and Virgil, who is an obviously sensitive young man, is shaken. Larry gives him the speech about how is Virg doesn’t do something about it, he’s going to be a pushover all throughout high school. He even offers to get Virgil a gun. His long day over, Virgil returns home, and finds out his long day isn’t quite over just yet. His sister is typically grating, but his mother is probably the worst, letting Virgil know in no uncertain terms that he’s the one that needs to shape up. He gets a quick respite when Frieda does indeed call him, but it’s short-lived, as she inadvertently steps on his already wounded pride.

Virgil is such a three dimensional character.

After that quick cut back to the present, Virgil continues his story, saying that even if she didn’t mean what he heard, it still inspired him to do what he did next. If you guessed he went ahead and got himself that gun, well, you’re right. After Larry gives him the “piece” he tells Virg where he can find Biz, who is up to no good. Larry intimates that if and when Virgil kills him, Biz will just be seen as another dead gangbanger, giving Virgil nothing to fear. Virgil makes his way to Paris Island where stuff is going down. There are street gangs from all over the city (Dakota, if you were wondering) gathered for what will soon be known as the “Big Bang”. Virgil finds Biz, and we get a little sequence that shows that Virgil is already hero material.

I don't often audibly cheer when reading comics, but Way to go, Virgil!

Virgil dumps the gun in the water, and is about to get the holy hell out of there, when the police arrive on the scene. The scene is so hectic, the cops are authorized to use a new kind of gas, which is indiscriminate on who it affects, even eating through the policemen’s gas masks. The gas overtakes Virigil as well as most of the people on Paris Island. He recovers fairly quickly, and is greeted by the sight of a mess of bodies, some horribly disfigured, so just dead. Just then, he sees something that will change his world forever.

"What? Just because a dude's made of bricks means he's not alive anymore?"

Before he can process what he’s seeing, the cops find Virgil. He obviously doesn’t want to be killed, so he puts his hand up in surrender, but well, something else happens.

Even faced with death, Virg can quip with the best of 'em.

Not being an idiot, Virgil makes a run for it, knowing the “cops” aren’t really going to listen to reason after being shocked like that. They try to catch him with some sort of wire mesh net, but acting on instinct, Virgil repels it with a static charge. Still doing whatever he can to get away, he manages to charge a garbage can lid and surf through the sky on it, doing one of his signature “moves” for the first time. As the story goes on, Virgil tells Frieda that he spent a lot of time practicing and finding out what he could do. This is best represented in the finest origin style as… a montage!

I would seriously stand in line for a day to see a Static movie.

The origin tale over, Virg recounts how, as Static, he has busted up thugs, crack houses, and been quite the venerable hero up until he met up with Hotstreak, the guy who gave Static the beatdown from the previous issue. It will probably not surprise you, but Hotstreak is in reality, Biz Money B, who also survived the Big Bang, which explains why Virgil froze up when he found this out during their last encounter. Frieda says that Virgil’s true victory was when he walked away from shooting Biz in cold blood, but Virgil doesn’t see it that way. He won’t be satisfied until he “kicks his sorry ass”. Being the boisterous sort, it isn’t hard to find Hotstreak. When Static arrives on the scene, he wastes no time (using applied knowledge in the finest Peter Parker tradition), cutting Hotstreak off from his powers. After that, the fight plays out as you might expect, with Virgil getting in a wicked burn or two.

"And to demonstrate, I will use you as a yoyo!"

Static further humiliates Hotstreak by using his powers to tune their conversation on the radio, so all of Hotstreak’s boys can hear him for the cowardly thug that he is. The battle is as you might expect, well and truly over, so Static returns to Frieda, triumphant, possibly hoping for a hero’s reward, but it looks like his luck doesn’t run that far.

What a sitcom ending. At least you'll have Paris (Island), Virg.

And that’s that. Static as a character would go on to have a respectable run in his comic series, get mainstream exposure thanks to the Static Shock cartoon, and is currently kicking around the mainstream DCU, set to get his own series again very soon. While the Milestone line as a whole was great, Static, in my opinion was the high point, and I’m glad he’s getting exposure again. Thank you for such a wonderful character, Mr. McDuffie, we’ll miss you.

This story appeared in Static #2 July, 1993 and was reprinted in Static Shock: Trial by Fire

Want to See Chewbacca in Action?

I was excited when the announcement came down that Chewbacca would be appearing on The Clone Wars, but the one clip that had been unveiled wasn’t incredibly revealing. Sure, it looked great and got me all pumped up for it, but we didn’t get to see much action.

With this new bumper for the Season Finale, we finally get to see Chewbacca cut loose and it’s quite a thing to see. I think for the first time we’re going to see the action-hero Wookiee in a bloodlust we’ve always wanted to see, ever since Han mentioned he’d pull peoples arms out of their sockets when they lose.

And is it just me or does it look like that first shot heavily references Chewbacca’s reveal in Jabba’s dungeon in Return of the Jedi?

The season finale of the third season of The Clone Wars airs in the United States on April 1st. I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.

(Thanks to the Star Wars Underworld for bringing this to my attention.)

Netflix Streaming adds STAR TREK! CBS catalog

On the heels of this morning’s announcement from Amazon, not to be outdone, Netflix flexes its little red envelopes and shows why they’re still the big dog in the streaming content world. This includes CBS’s back catalogue, which has a lot of great sci-fi, including the holy grail: Star Trek.

From the press release:

Beginning in early April, dozens of hit shows from CBS will join the extensive library of television shows and movies available to watch instantly from Netflix for only $7.99 a month.

Content covered under the new deal includes the long-running drama, “Medium” and the summer season favorite, “Flashpoint.”  Also covered under the agreement are episodes from some of television’s most iconic franchises.  Full seasons of sitcom greats “Frasier,” “Family Ties” and “Cheers” will be streaming instantly from Netflix.  Episodes from the original “Hawaii Five-0” are included in the package, as are episodes from all generations of the definitive sci-fi series, “Star Trek,” and the cult favorite, “Twin Peaks.”  Installments of ’60s classics, “The Twilight Zone” and “The Andy Griffith Show,” will be available as well.

So, aside from sci-fi and enough awesome 80’s nostalgia to make you want to vote for Reagan, there’s something on there for Grandma, too, it seems.

Unfortunately, no word yet on what episodes of Trek will be available (just give it all to us– come on!! You know you want to!!!!), and in what format. You may remember the Trek remastered episodes that began airing a few years ago, It would be great if these were available, as the effects updates were a huge improvement.

So what are you robots most excited to watch? Personally, I’d like to sit down and watch both The Trouble with Tribbles and then the Deep Space Nine where they travel back in time to meet Kirk and deal with the Tribbles. Anyone else? A marathon of all of the best appearances by Q?

Or, watching all of Twin Peaks to finally figure out who killed Laura Palmer and just why everyone in that town was so weird?

3DS Launch Games and Pricing!

Guest writer Triscut of Doom stumbled across this list on 1UP.com today and clued us in to the epicness of the announcement. Nintendo announced the launch titles for the 3ds that will be available next month and confirmed the game pricing. 3DS games will release with a 39.99 price tag, and the following will be available alongside the handheld on March 27th. If you’re checking for Zelda, don’t worry, as usual Nintendo doesn’t have it ready and will probably end up pushing it to Holiday 2012, mark my words folks it’ll be a minute before we see even a rehash of our old friend Link available for the 3ds.

From Nintendo themselves

  • Pilot Wings Resort
  • Steel Diver
  • Nintendogs +Cats

The 3rd party titles will be

  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
  • The Sims 3
  • Madden NFL Football
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D
  • LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
  • Ridge Racer 3D
  • Super Monkey Ball 3D
  • Bust-a-Move Universe
  • Samurai Warriors: Chronicles
  • Asphalt 3D
  • Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
  • Rayman 3D
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

I hope Pilot Wings can live up to the reputation of its predecessor, I loved Pilot Wings 64. I’m also pleased to see that Ridge Racer has continued their launch title status…(insert sarcasm here). Honestly of the 18 games showing, the only thing I’ll be buying is Street Fighter and Pilot Wings. I’ll pick up my Pokemon Black and White when they release and play it on the 3DS, but they will be missing 3d functionality of course. Any ones on the list you folks are excited for?

IN MEMORIAM: Dwayne McDuffie

Comic Book Resources is reporting that beloved creator Dwayne McDuffie has passed away due to complications from a medical procedure performed Monday. McDuffie, who among his many accomplishments helped create the Milestone Universe, including fan-favorite Static, seemed in perfect health. According to eyewitnesses at the premier of one of McDuffie’s latest projects, the animated All Star Superman. He is survived by his wife, and all of us here at BSR wish his family the greatest of condolences.

While it is sad that McDuffie has left us, a cursory glance at twitter shows us how many he has touched. Writer Dan Slott remembers the time where McDuffie put his name in a comic the first time, and how much it meant to him. Alex Segura calls him “a class act”. Even Comics Alliance’s Chris Sims reminisced, talking about how McDuffie was the first creator to comment on his blog. Whether or not you knew the man personally, his work and his legacy remains, and will always be influential. Rest in peace, Mr. McDuffie.

D.J. Caruso to Direct Preacher

A lot of directors have had their hats in the ring for the adaptation of the graphic novel series Preacher. John August was brought in to adapt it at one point and a lot of names have been circling it.

Apparently, D.J. Caruso (who directed Disturbia and Eagle Eye) has landed the gig.

This news comes from his Twitter (which isn’t verified, so take it with that grain of salt):

My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!

Now, this doesn’t mean we’ll see a Preacher movie. A lot of writers and directors have snagged the job, but that hasn’t exactly meant they got to film it. Especially since people have been saying for years that this series is unfilmable except in an HBO miniseries situation.

And I’m not sold that Caruso is the best man for any job. His two-bit remake of “Rear Window” (Disturbia) was mediocre at best and I’m told that’s his best work.

His name was also a front runner for a long time for Brian K. Vaughn’s “Y the Last Man” with Shia Lebeouf starring. Which could have been interesting, but again, that story is more geared toward a longer format.

In any case, we’ll hold our breath and see.

Darth Maul NOT in the Season 3 Finale…

Reports surfaced over the weekend that Darth Maul and Savage Opress would be appearing in the season finale of The Clone Wars.  I know before any announcements were made I’d been speculating about it myself, but nothing was definitive.  With the announcement that Chewbacca would be featured in the season finale, it seemed as though those speculations were wrong.

I’d been bombarded with links to the IMDb page for the final episode of Season 3 that pretty confidently states that Darth Maul and Savage Opress would be returning to the show.

To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi, “It doesn’t feel right.”

So I asked Lucasfilm for a comment, and this was the reply from Tracy Cannobbio, an official Lucasfilm spokesperson:

The IMDB listing for our S3 Season Finale contains some incorrect information – but while neither Darth Maul nor Savage Opress will be featured in the episode, we will be marking the Clone Wars debut of Chewbacca, one of the Star Wars Saga’s most iconic and beloved characters.

So, you heard it here first.  The IMDb listing and subsequent reports are bunk.

I’m not disappointed at all.  The clip they’ve already shown of Chewbacca so far looks fantastic and a season finale of The Clone Wars hasn’t let me down yet.

And if my speculations about “Wookiee Hunt” being the “Predator” inspired episode Dave Filoni told me about at Star Wars Celebration V, we all have a lot to look forward to.

Amazon Unveils Online Video Streaming!

It appears that the rumors were true!

A few weeks ago there was speculation that Amzon would be introducing their own online video streaming service as part of their Amazon Prime memberships to compete with Netflix (there were even rumors of a partnership with RedBox). Today, upon visiting Amazon, you are greeted with this message:

This is fantastic news for those of you out there who already enjoy an Amazon Prime membership, and great news if you don’t. Paying the annual $79 fee to be a member is more than a competitive price to pay for such a service; if you’re paying for Netflix’s streaming only service you’re paying just about $100 annually for that service.

Amazon giving everyone who wants one a free month trial membership is a great move and gives all of us video streaming fans out there a chance to try out this service and compare. I just started my trial membership this morning and can’t wait to get home and hop on my Roku to see what Amazon has to offer in the way of titles compared to Netflix. I imagine at the end of the month I’m going to have a decision to make: Netflix or Amazon, or is there justification to have both? I plan on writing up an in-depth review of my experience and my decision at the end of my free trial, so watch for updates in that regard!

Are you excited to have another option for online video streaming? Are you going to compare and look into making a decision between Netflix and Amazon, or do you plan on having both? Share your thoughts below!
