Convention Sketches #18

Welcome to the seventeenth issue of Convention Sketches!

We feature a convention sketch here every week. We’ve got a whole pile of our own, but we want to see yours, too. Email us convention sketches you want to show off and let us know what website you’d like credited for it. (bigshinyrobot(at)gmail.com)

This week, Sean Leslie from the Wednesday Warriors podcast sent in this great Scott Morse sketch, we have Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune. Morse is perhaps one of the biggest Kurosawa fans I’ve ever met (easily a match for Jerk-Bot and myself) and his enthusiasm for the master director is infectious.

The moment I saw this piece, I knew I was in love with it.

MOVIE TRAILERS! Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss and Boots.

I adored the original Kung Fu Panda… Along with How to Train Your Dragon, It is by far the best animated adventure Dreamworks has released. Now- At the time of it’s release I thought to myself “They better not make a sequel and ruin this movie’s allure”… but to be honest- even though the following trailer isn’t anything special- it looks like KFP2 could actually turn out to be just that: special. The whole trailer is rife with epic epicness… and to be frank- I feel like they just ruined a lot of the plot points, and emotional beats… but what can you do? They’re just here to make a product… not sell us on it! I guess they just assume that the return of Jack Black and his lovable overeating panda, is enough for our return… come on, where’s the artistry left in the world!? Like the ” target=”_blank”>first teaser they released… that was unique… that was original… (staring contests with an entire theater- love it)

Dreamworks has really turned their production efforts into a pure factory type facility, mass produced on a conveyor belt and shipped to the world in neat little packaging… ‘Puss’, was in fact, the best part of the original Shrek, but I cannot possibly see a way this could be turned into a feature film- even IF they used the original fairy tale that is ‘in Boots’. Here- watch the drivel that is this teaser. How Antonio Banderas signed off on this (not to mention a trillion other crap fests in the Shrek franchise) I’ll never know.

Anyway- what are your thoughts?

MOVIE SERIALS!: Green Hornet Ch. 7

Things are actually looking pretty good for the Hornet this week! He got a confession out of Rockford, and was on the verge of breaking another racket, all he had to face for a cliffhanger was falling out of a 2nd story window! I bet he’s none the worse for wear, and at this moment is taking a well-deserved break from crime-fighting to have a nice tea time with Kato. Nah, I’m just pulling your leg! There’s sure to be more gunplay, car chases and derring-do  in Chapter 7 of The Green Hornet: Bridge of Disaster! If nothing else, I’m willing to bet even money there will be a bridge facing some kind of disaster. Let’s watch and find out!

REVIEW: The Clone Wars 3.19

Remember that feeling you got watching the first half hour of Revenge of the Sith?  The one that made you feel like Obi-Wan and Anakin had spent a lot of time together having adventures during the war?  I never felt like we had enough of that feeling, but tonight’s middle episode of the Citadel trilogy really went a long way to fill that void.

Tonight’s episode was pure, unadulterated high adventure and I enjoyed the hell out of every minute of it.

The writers seem to be bleeding more and more classic Star Wars feeling into the episodes than they’ve ever done before.  And not just the writers, the sound designers as well.  From the familiar sound of the mouse droids to the whine of the STAPS and Artoo’s beeps and whistles, everything about the audio seemed knocked up a notch.  Getting back to the writing, though, this episode felt like a perfect blend between the escapes, chases, and Tarkin from A New Hope and that overriding sense of friendship in a tight spot that the first two thirds of Return of the Jedi oozes.

Last episode Anakin and Obi-Wan rescued Master Piell and Captain Tarkin from an impregnable fortress, or from their cells at least.  This episode is spent trying to make their way out, but they’re foiled at every turn by Commander Sobeck (voiced unrecognizably by the always brilliant James Arnold Taylor.)

Perhaps the most fun of these episodes is the fact that Artoo is commanding a squad of reprogrammed Battle Droids.  Artoo always works better with a droid next to him that can talk and this trio of droids is no exception.  It’s charming and funny, and serves a number of turning points in the story that are at once logical and tremendously fun to watch.  And I love that they call him Commander.

The violence in this episode was noticeably more brutal than in episodes past.  I’ve no problems with that, in fact, I love it.  It was sort of fun to watch my kids gasp at moments when things get particularly nasty, between Sobeck cutting clones in half with blast doors or shooting them in the face at point blank range.  It was brutal and had an emotional impact on all of us and I was grateful for it.  All of the best movies and stories for kids have a grim darkness to them and this episode was no exception.

The part that I was most shocked by was that there was a particular clone who bought the farm this episode and I let out an audible yelp when he died.  He’s a clone.  I shouldn’t care so much, but I’ll be damned if this didn’t hit me right here.

Speaking of dying, is it just me, or does the preview for next week seem to heavily imply someone is going to die?  I wonder if they’re going to kill Master Piell, who has turned into a very, very cool character.  Would his death here at the Citadel send EU purists into a tail spin?  Only time will tell.

Overall, this was a very fine episode.  The animation was up to the high quality standards that have come to be expected from the crew, the story was tight, and it was beyond fun.  Who could ask for more?

However, the part I’m struggling with the most with this story arc is that it’s the penultimate one of the season.  And that means I’m going to have to suffer through the summer once more without new episodes.  They should double the season orders for the show and put it on year round.  Or just get this to alternate with the live action show and Seth Green’s cartoon.  Maybe I’m just greedy, but I want a new Star Wars adventure every week.

Kotobukiya Ghostbusters Gal Statue

Not the Ghostbusters statue I think most of us were expecting, this one is a bit more… gratuitous. Kotobukiya shocked everyone with a preview of this at the recent Toy Fairs. Let’s go over what I consider the pros and cons for this busty ‘buster.

Pros:
• Great coloring and pose.
• Screen accurate Proton Pack (besides one little thing I’ll get to in a second).
• This will definitely be a unique Ghostbusters collectible to turn heads.

Cons:
• Depending on your taste, this collectible may turn heads for the wrong reasons.
• The torn pants. I mean, I get it, but it still kinda bugs me.
• This is a “rookie” girl ‘buster. Part of me wishes they would’ve slapped some glasses on her and said it was Janine.
• The small innaccuracy I was talking about earlier… the hose to the Proton Gun is supposed to come out of the bottom right side of the Proton Pack (shown in the gallery below). Not the top right. Obviously they changed this so it woudln’t unterupt the view of her rump.

It looks as though this will be around $70, shipping in July. There are a few places to preorder it online. I’m sure I’ll break down and get one, but it probably won’t share the shelf space with my Matty toys.

New Images in the Disney Dream Portrait Series

The Disney Parks Blog has released three new amazing images in the Annie Leibovitz Disney Dream Portrait Series, begun around four years ago.

Olivia Wilde (Tron) is featured as the Wicked Queen from Snow White, and in the role as her Magic Mirror is Alec Baldwin.  Wilde’s makeup is perfect as the Queen, and her expression truly captures the haughtiness of Disney’s earliest villain.

Next we see Penelope Cruz and Jeff Bridges (also recently seen in Tron) as Belle and the former Beast.  The scenery in this image is gorgeous and very reminiscent of the balcony at the Beast’s castle in the animated film.  The trademark yellow ballgown is also exquisite, though I would imagine someone wearing a dress that voluminous would weigh a bit more than this image would indicate.  Fabric is heavy.  Also, I’m not even sure if Bridges and Cruz were photographed at the same time.  He doesn’t appear to really be looking at her.

The final image is of Queen Latifah as Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid.  This is such a dynamic image, with her tentacles moving in all different directions and the spray of the ocean against the rocks.  The expression of glee on her face makes me wonder if she’s been casting spells on merpeople again.  Naughty naughty Ursula.

You can also view some of the earlier portraits in the series on io9.  I have always been rather fond of the Rachel Weisz as Snow White image, but you’ll also find Tinkerbell, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and spinning teacups.

Mine Craft Wins at GDC

This years awards at GDC 2011 like the previous years were many and varied. Of the awards given out it seems that Red Dead Redemption and Mine Craft cleaned house. As reported today by The Independent, Red Dead Redemption took home Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Technology, and it’s well deserved title Game of the Year.

Continuing on with what the independent calls a “rag to riches” story, and honestly the dream of many gamer/independent programmer was the awards given to Mine Craft. It was given Best Debut Game, Best Downloadable Game, and an Innovation Award.

I’m sure you’ve heard us rant about Mine Craft before, the game is barely to beta and has sold 1.5 million Downloads at 10 or so Euros a shot. It’s original, exciting, fun, and in my opinion deserves all the awards it received at GDC. It could be the overall soft spot for independent content making it big, or it could be the fact that for 10 Euros I had a great time creating and running around an open world, seeing gorgeous user created content, and just digging up the world looking for ore.

I could rant for days but in lieu of showing the fanboy that I really am for both these titles I will simply say that I think the folks at GDC made a great decision on these awards.

Charlie Sheen visits Riverdale?!

So, that Charlie Sheen guy has been in the news recently. And it’s been a fascinating trip inside a celebrity’s mind, and now it seems that the happy insanity has crossed over into comicdom! The following piece of art has been seen in various other places around the internet, notably the MTV Geek blog, but this aketch by Archie artist Fernando Ruiz  has to truly be seen to be believed.

I can’t decide if Betty and Veronica are truly happy to be invited to Charlie’s sexy party, or if they have-deer-in the headlights expressions on their faces because they’re scared out of their wits. To be honest, this picture is just a fun sketch by Ruiz, and it by no means is indicative of Sheen appearing in Archie Comics. If it did happen though, the story possibilities would be endless.

  • The above pictured “anointing” of B&V as “goddesses”
  • The Archie gang has a series of face-melting thanks to the new drug ‘Charlie Sheen’
  • A Martian  three-way (heh) concert is held with The Archies, Josie & the Pussycats, and Sheen aka “The rock star from Mars”
  • Charlie leading the Riverdale Historical Society in it’s Civil War re-enactment, since he is “battle-tested bayonets”
  • A new mini-series ‘Charlie’s Vatican Assassins”
  • Sheen donates the “rocket fuel in the tip of his saber” to Dilton, creating a new renewable energy source until it goes horribly wrong.
  • Charlie wins the annual Riverdale surfing contest, thanks to his mercury surfboard
  • Jughead reports sightings of “droopy-eyed armless children” after one of Charlie’s legendary parties
  • As mentioned by Chris Sims, an all out warlock battle with Salem, Sabrina’s cat.

Man, now I kind of want to read those…

Hugo Weaving IS the Red Skull!

Of course, we already knew Hugo Weaving was playing. the Red Skull. We even got a split second glimpse of him in the Captain America trailer. Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we get a full shot of Weaving in full Skull regalia.

It is interesting to note that in this shot, the Red Skull is wearing a comics-perfect insignia of the evil Hydra organization in his belt buckle. Before you get into a tizzy though, EW in their article explicitly states that the Red Skull is the end product of Nazi super-soldier experimentation. This is thankfully true to the character, and all I can say is, at least he’s not Italian!

The EW article is also chock full of other useful information, such as the fact that, in the movie, the Super-Soldier serum amplifies traits already present in the subject. For instance, if you’re a paragon like Steve Rogers, you become Man Plus. If you’re a not-so-goodnik like Johann Schmidt, you become a symbol of death. It’s also worth mentioning that the title of the movie will be The First Avenger for international release, due to concerns about the name “Captain America” no being salable overseas.

So, enjoy the pic, share your thoughts, and be sure to read the rest of the EW article, for more general Cap info, including the full interview with director Joe Johnston.
