STAR WARS: New Cartoon Series: Rebels!
By Bryan Young on May 20, 2013 in News Star Wars TelevisionLucasfilm and Disney announced today the new animated series they cancelled The Clone Wars for, a new series called Rebels, set during the dark times between Episode III and Episode IV, it presumably will offer us a window to the formation of the rebellion.
I love the idea that this is basically a Ralph McQuarrie looking show coming to us. It’s also great to see guys like Filoni, Killian Plunkett, and Joel Aron involved. They’re part of the heart and soul of what made The Clone Wars incredible and I have no doubt they will work wonders with this show.
Here’s the official press release:
Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.
Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the ®Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.
Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers.”
“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”
The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV – an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.
Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe (http://www.starwarscelebration.eu/) will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on www.StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.
Of course this raises many questions. This was the area of time the long in development live action show was to occupy. Does this mean that series is completely scrapped? Or is it being adapted into this in any capacity?
I’m told we might not get much more information about this show until after Celebration Europe.
Until then, you know where you can get the most up to date news, and it’s right here.
STAR WARS VII: Jonathan Rhys Meyers In Talks?
By Bryan Young on May 20, 2013 in Movies News Star WarsAccording to the astute and generally hauntingly accurate El Mayimbe over at Latino Review, it seems as though Jonathan Rhys Meyers may well be in talks to star in Episode VII.
Obviously “in-talks” doesn’t mean anything definite. Talks fall through, people move on, people puff themselves up and say they’re in talks because they want to be in talks soon. Anything.
Here’s the bit from Latino Review:
This is a name that has been thrown around a lot, especially since he has a relationship with J.J. Abrams. He appeared in Mission Impossible: III, directed by Abrams.
Sounds like he already has it.
He’s none other than…
The Tudors (2007-2010) star Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
I think he’s a fantastic actor, his turn in Woody Allen’s Match Point was nothing short of brilliant.
The bigger question is who would he play?
And that’s really anyone’s guess. We can speculate about a hundred Expanded Universe characters (which I still personally find an unlikely scenario), or he could be a brand new character that we know nothing about.
Or he could not end up being in the film at all.
But if you look at the timeline, and Disney swears they’re sticking to a 2015 release date, they’re going to have to start making these decisions sooner rather than later.
Until then, take this with a grain of salt and remember that until something is announced through Disney/Lucasfilm, nothing is official.
REVIEW: Game of Thrones S3 E08 “Second Sons”
By Nick Marx on May 19, 2013 in Reviews TelevisionThis review will contain spoilers, anything going beyond the scope of the episode will be done in white text and will be preceded by *Spoiler*, episode spoilers will not be prefaced.
Last week was pretty fucked up. While Jon was getting laid and finally knowing something Ygritte didn’t Theon was losing his dick. Sansa was preparing to get hitched to the least awful Lannister while Arya was being kidnapped by Sandor Clegane. Hodor was gettin real sick of Osha and Jamie and Brienne were fighting a bear. The only character who isn’t going through hell right now is the Khaleesi, which I’m just going to assume will change real soon.
The Good
- I really like Sandor telling Arya he isn’t as awful as she believes he is. “Fuck Joffrey, Fuck the Queen.”
- Second Sons are arrogant as all hell. I love it. Along with Daenerys having such a bored almost amused look on her face.
- Stannis the Mannis doesn’t waste time on bullshit but it sounds like Gendry is in for some pain/slaughter.
- Davos is lowborn and is being taught to read by Shireen Baratheon but damned if the guy isn’t one of the smartest and most moral men on the show.
- Tyrion being as awkward as a teenager picking up his prom date is hilarious. Also holy shit they’re getting married today!
- Cersei’s look of “What the fuck is this thing touching me for?” She is really dialing that character in. Also always love a mention of Rains of Castamere.
- Joffrey is such an enormous douchecanoe it’s funny. Also good lord that was the worlds most awkward wedding. Lord Twyin is not amused. Laughing at him seems like the least intelligent thing to do.
- Wow that makes 2 episodes of someone ending up with some real mean blue balls. At least Gendry will be able to relieve his at some point. Maybe.
- Olenna throwing down on the shit show that is weddings of blue bloods. Gods that woman is hilarious. Mixing that with a hammered Tyrion is highly entertaining.
- “I am the god of tits and wine!” Nice callback writers!!
- “Then you’ll be fucking your own bride with a wooden cock!” Wow, solid threat on the King. Necessary and awesome.
- Lots of butts this season. It’s gotten to a point where you could easily make it a drinking game.
- Faces in the weirwoods are super awesome and creepy. Mix in crows and it just gets more creepy.
- I love me some Samwell Tarly. *Spoiler* Where is Sam the Slayer!?
- OH SHIT!! Sam killed himself an Other with his dragonglass!! *Spoiler* THERE HE IS!!!!

- Arya really didn’t think through her attempt to kill the Hound much. Sure she had a big rock but she’s so little. Gotta give her credit though for trying so soon.
- Finally some more Davos! I list this only in the bad section because I want more. You can tell Stannis wants to let him out and misses his right hand man.
- Do not like Cersei playing her hand against the soon to be Queen so blatantly. Doesn’t make a hell of a lot of sense.
- Hey Gendry, I’m going to be nice to you and show you everything that could have been and then probably torture you so that I can do some magic. Bad luck having that Baratheon blood Gendry.
- No thanks to Rapey Joffrey, I hate him enough as is.
- As funny as Tyrion is that bedroom scene was just painful. Sansa pouring herself a cup of wine is heartbreaking. It’s a testament to the show that you feel bad for both parties involved.
We spent a whole lot of time in King’s Landing this episode to watch Tyrion and Sansa be wed. It was painful and amazing. Dinklage always shines but this episode he really stuck out. Playing drunk can come off really badly but he did a great job and I’m sure the already fan favorite is becoming more so by being the least detestable Lannister. The Second Sons were an interesting addition to the show, Dany keeps growing stronger and now she’s got a man lusting after her who isn’t Jorah. Sam came back for this episode and found a way to destroy the Others but who knows if he will remember it. Daario and Sam the Slayer made things very interesting and seeing that next week is the standard climax episode means that shit is getting crazy next week!
STAR WARS: Dave Filoni teases clues to new animated series

RUMOR: Jeremy Renner Out, Hawkeye to be Recast?
By Tyson Huber on May 16, 2013 in Movies NewsWith the space between The Avengers and the inevitable sequel to hit 3 years later, I figured there may be some cast shake-ups, and the current rumor circulating around is that Jeremy Renner may not be reprising his role as Hawkeye.
A “Hollywood Source” told CBM that Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner’s involvement in Marvel’s Phase 2 of films may be in jeopardy due to some comments he made about his character’s portrayal in The Avengers – which to my recollection were made months ago:
“For 90 percent of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play,” Renner said to Total Film. “It’s kind of a vacancy. [He’s] not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses … I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No.”
Okay, Renner, fair enough. However, I thought Hawkeye’s “turn to the dark side” played a fairly important role inThe Avengersand by the end of the film, he was back to his badass former self, standing up against an alien invasion with a bow and arrow. But, I can see where he is coming from with the “limitations” of the role. The character of Hawkeye has a pretty shady past, and in other forms of media he’s appeared in (cartoons, comics, etc.) it makes for a pretty interesting and compelling character. For the Marvel movie universe though, he is very much a secondary character, and we only find out bits about him through conversations with others; given the size of the roster, it’s doubtful this archer would ever be fully explored.
CBM also notes:
No surprise since Hawkeye has not been mentioned once in Marvel’s Phase 2 by studio president Kevin Feige or Phase 2 helmer Joss Whedon. Renner’s best chance to reprise his character—pre-Avengers 2—would’ve been in the heavily S.H.I.E.L.D. featured Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But with new S.H.I.E.L.D. additions Agent 13 and the Falcon being introduced, Hawkeye would have once again been more in the background and probably continuing to anger Renner.
The source hints that there’s the tiniest chance Renner will reprise his role in The Avengers Sequel but the source also said there is a greater chance Hawkeye will be recast (like War Machine and the Hulk have been recast before). Finally, the source said if Hawkeye is to be recast there is a solid chance he could be incorporated into the new television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a primary character.
Well, this just got a little more interesting. Even with being just a supporting character, I really enjoyed Renner as Hawkeye, however the thought of the role being recast and the character moving to the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television series sounds pretty intriguing to me, and frankly, perhaps a better fit?
Taking a step back, the Marvel cinematic universe is growing quickly. We had the culmination of 5 films result in The Avengers, and Iron Man 3 just kicked off phase 2. There are plans to introduce even more characters, and now on top of all this, we are getting an awesome-looking television show set in the same universe. I have faith the Marvel will put all the right pieces in the right spot. I’m sure we will get some “low-tiered” superheroes popping up on the S.H.I.E.L.D. television show, and some more heavy hitters popping up in the various films already filming and in development, and hopefully it will all fill like a fluid universe – perhaps a recast Hawkeye on television will prove a better fit and give fans of the character far more of him than they would get in cameos in films.
However, keep in mind that at this point, this is a rumor. Hopefully someone from Marvel, or Renner himself, will come forward with some information soon.
You can follow Arse-bot and all the pointless thoughts he puts out into the interwebs on Twitter @Arse_bot
What do you think the best route for the portrayal of Hawkeye is going forward? Are you hoping Jeremy Renner reprises the role in Avengers 2? Or are you hoping he’ll be recast and have a larger role in the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series? Sound off below!

TRAILER: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
By Jeremiah Lupo on May 14, 2013 in Comics News TelevisionSo after a couple of days of tiny teases we finally get a full blown trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! With that comes a much better look at what the show will be about. Such as Coulson being alive only being known to those that have security level 7. There is also a hooded man that appears to be indestructible. I’m guessing Luke Cage? Could this mean that we could have Jessica Jones in this show since “AKA Jessica Jones” never came to be? If this show gives us the street level characters that would be considered too small for movies then I’m completely on board! Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air this fall on Tuesdays at 8pm.
