Let’s Go To The Ultra Con! – Introducing Comiket

Guest author Kondroid (from Tokyo, Japan) is here to bring us an insider’s look into the world’s largest convention. Kondroid attended this year’s 2011 Comiket at Tokyo Big Site in Tokyo, Japan and got us exclusive coverage that is rarely published in English. Enjoy!

コミケにいこう!
(Let’s Go To Comiket! The King Of Cons)

Nerd conventions. Chances are if you’re reading this, you may have been to one. When most people think of a “big con”, the usual suspects normally come up (Comic-Con, E3, PAX, Anime Expo, Otakon, etc.). Some nerds pride themselves on attending as many major cons as they can manage – the bigger the con, the higher the bragging rights. But I can guarantee – as large as your biggest con was, you have not experienced a true super-massive-con until you’ve been to the Grand Daddy of them all: Comic Market.

- Tokyo Big Site - Host to Comiket -

– Tokyo Big Sight, host to Comiket, and holiest site in the Otaku universe. –

For the majority of western con-goers, this name might not ring any bells. Comic Market (or Comiket, for short), held in Tokyo Japan, is the world’s largest geek convention. A three day long event so large they have to hold it twice a year just to accommodate the sheer number of hopeful vendors and fans, its attendance is numbered in the hundreds of thousands… for each day. In 2010, the total number of people recorded for both Comikets (that’s six days total) was over one million attendees.

Comiket Line 1

– The legendary line. This is only the end of one part of it. It stretches around the entire massive building. –

It’s not easy for the organizers to get an accurate attendance figure as the con has no entry fee. … That’s right, attending the world’s largest geek gathering will not cost you a cent!

Waiting at the entrance

– Waiting at the entrance. –

The catch is, though, that Comiket isn’t really anything like a normal western style con. There are no panels to attend. There are no voice actors to meet, or releases from companies regarding upcoming titles. There are no shows or concerts. There are no people gathering around dancing or doing silly things like playing Ninja. You will not see a single person glomped. There is almost nothing here that resembles a “normal” con, by most people’s definition… except one thing in particular.

The dealer’s room.

dealer's room

– This sea of people is only half of one of the four halls that make up the Comiket Dealer’s Room. –

Comiket is, in fact, just one massive dealers room. Several football fields worth, mind you, but still a dealer’s room none the less (the name of the event is “Comic Market”, after all). People turn up, rush in to buy what they’re after, and then leave. That’s it. The entire event is finished by 4pm everyday (and even then, most people have already left before 3pm anyway). To top it off, like the name suggests, the majority of things being sold there are literally just comics. Not regular comics, either – but “Doujinshi.”

“Doujinshi” (or “doujin” for short) are basically limited production fan-fiction comics. Think of anything pop-culture from Japan (anime, manga, games, etc.), and there is almost guaranteed to be a doujin for it. It’s not even limited to Japanese source material, either. There are doujin devoted to American movies and TV shows. Everything from the latest Pixar feature to Jack Bower’s exploits on 24 have been turned into a doujin.

The catch? 98% of all doujin are pornographic. If you’re not careful, it is possible to stumble across Mickey and Goofy involved in some very eyebrow raising behavior… Basically, it’s easier to think of the goods on display at Comiket as a tangible version of fan-fiction meets DeviantArt.

Yoshi Doujinshi

– These are doujinshi. You do not want to see what Yoshi gets up to in this comic… or DO you? –

The main point of Comiket are those doujinshi. Because of a loophole in Japanese copyright laws that makes it possible for these fan-made comics to even be allowed to exist and be sold in the first place (As long as the print run is under a certain amount, it “escapes recognition” by copyright watchdogs.), each “Circle” (see: small publishing group) is only able/allowed to print and sell a limited number of these comics. Because of these limited numbers, there is a mad rush to be the first to their booth before they sell out.

As there are literally thousands of circles selling their wares, and tens of thousands of fans for each circle all frothing at the mouth in anticipation. You can imagine the furor that erupts as soon as those doors open in the morning!

original wares

– Some pretty impressive original wares sold by circles can also be found, if you’re brave enough to take on the Ganondorf/Mewtwo romance doujin for sale at their table. –

If doujin aren’t your taste, there is one other reason you may want to attend Comiet – the cosplay. Comiket is also known for being one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, cosplay event in Tokyo. Cosplay is, of course, a natural extension that comes with any massive gathering of nerds. Obviously the bigger the gathering, the more cosplayers to expect, and as Comiket is the biggest nerd gathering in the world it stands to reason that it would also have one of the largest number of cosplayers in attendance (and it does). People from around the country, and some from around the world, gather there to show off some of the best examples of costume making and modeling perfection.

awesome cosplay

– This fantastic cosplay pair is just one example of the thousands of amazing cosplayers you can see at Comiket. –

Already making plans to attend the next Comiket? Check out part two of our Comiket coverage – The Guide to Surviving Comiket! – coming tomorrow. In to cosplay? We’ll have a full album of cosplay photos up from this year’s Comiket this Friday – part three in this year’s Big Shiny Robot Comiket coverage.

And now, enjoy Kondroid’s photos from day 1 of Comiket!

Star Wars Blu-ray News

The Star Wars Blu-ray’s are right around the corner and more and more information about the versions we’ll be seeing has been leaking out at a steady clip.

First, StarWars.Com has a pretty fascinating look about a lot of the really small things that will be fixed with this release.

For one, I didn’t realize that they had to crop the frames on some of the DVDs, and all of that is getting fixed. There’s also some instances of clipping with the CGI characters that is going to be fixed. (They specifically mention an instance of Fode and Beed’s hand cutting through his shirt, no mention on if they’re fixing the Bongo clipping through the Opee Sea Killer’s jaws.)

They also talk about some of the more needed fixes in the classic trilogy, from lightsaber colors to the blob of black cartoon on Palpatine’s face in Return of the Jedi.

Read their full report (with pictures and comparisons!) here.

There is also a whole bunch of HD videos from each film in the Saga put up by the official Star Wars Youtube account. (They’re all rounded up here.)

A video is also floating out there of a CGI Yoda replacing the puppet version of the character in The Phantom Menace. It’s not from the official Youtube, but looks compelling one way or the other.

(-musUw”>Here’s a link to the original version)

For the Blu-ray release, FOX is also running a promotion where you can ask Darth Vader anything you want. Seriously. Try it out.

And the last thing on the list, and the thing I’ve wasted the most time doing, is the “Voting” feature they’ve added to the website. You get to vote on the best moments in the Star Wars saga (and watch a lot of them, too.) They have them all ranked and it’s interesting to see the pretty even split between great moments from the prequels and the classic trilogy.

You can hit that website up here. Don’t spend TOO much time there.

The Blu-rays hit stores September 16th, 2011, and you can preorder them here.

The D23 Avengers Presentation

Disney’s D23 expo was the site of Marvel’s unveiling of the Avengers (much to the dismay of the Comic-Con audience) and they brought out most of the principle cast and showed some footage. We managed to get video of the presentation and thought we’d offer it here to you.

The Hollywood Reporter got some interviews afterward and they offered some great tidbits.

Here’s Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey, Jr.:

Tom Hiddleston discussing his part as Loki:

And Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson talking about fight scenes and injuries on set:

The Avengers hits screens next year. You can read about the footage shown in this report from earlier today.

D23 Avengers Trailer Description

The Marvel Movies facebook page (which you should all join) was on hand at D23 and they posted a description of the Avengers footage shown. I know a lot of people were upset that they were showing the footage at D23 instead of Comic-Con, but it was no less effective in getting the word out instantly.

You can read the full description on the Marvel Movies facebook page, but my favorite part?

The ending:

Loki sees the camera and knows that the Avengers are watching him.
Lord, Thor’s arms are MASSIVE.
“You talk about peace and you kill cuz it’s fun.” – Fury to Loki
Loki looks even more menacing than he did in Thor…wow!
Loki’s hair looks longer. Maybe that’s just me.
We got to see Hawkeye loose an arrow. LOOKED GREAT.
Big explosion!
Renner also using guns. But he has a full quiver of arrows on his back.
Tony Stark is doing a headcount of the Avengers: A couple of master assassins, a demigod, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend
Iron Man and somone battling. Maybe Thor?
And the last scene of Tony Stark talking? It was to Loki!
To Loki: “And you, big fella, managed to piss off every one of them.” Loki: “I have an army.” Stark: “We have a Hulk!”

I’m still having a hard time believing that we get to see this movie in our lifetime. This sounds like everything we’ve wanted, everything we’ve asked for, everything our heart desires.

I still feel like I’m living in a dream and the other shoe is going to drop and we won’t REALLY have an Avengers movies.

It comes out next year, and the word on twitter from producer Kevin Feige at D23 is that they have only 2 weeks of filming left.

I can’t wait.

Until then, we’ll be on the lookout for the footage if it ever comes out for you to look at.

TRAILER: ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’

A few years back ol’ Nicholas Cage became Ghost Rider in a not-so-great but not-completely-unwatchable film adaptation of the Marvel character. Well, as you’ve probably heard Marvel felt it did well enough to have a second go at the character so the hired the directing team of Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine (the guys who brought us Crank and Crank: High Voltage) and said, “Make an action-centric sequel using lots of slow motion.”

We now have our first look at this follow up to Ghost Rider via the trailer below. No word yet on if Nicholas Cage will appear without his shirt on again with CG “enhanced” muscle definition since he apparently can’t be bothered to hit the gym.

So yeah. There it is. I am honestly at a loss of words. I’m not the world’s biggest Ghost Rider fan by any sense of the imagination, so I’ll leave it up to you readers to provide thoughts on the actual treatment of the character. From my point of view, looks like it will at most be a fun action-filled popcorn flick, but I doubt anyone is expecting this to be even close to the caliber of other Marvel hero films. You can definitely see the influences of the new directors, especially if you have seen either of the Crank films (Read: Lots of ludicrous action scenes and slow motion). It might just be me but I can’t exactly discern a clear plot out of this trailer, it just looked like a lot of action cut together with some vague voice-0vers. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance may end up being a step above its predecessor, but I don’t think that’s saying much.

We will all be able to cast out geeky verdicts upon Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance when it hits theaters on February 17, 2012.

PS – Swallowing bullets and spitting them back? Kind of lame. Ghost Rider pissing fire? Definitely lame.

Sound off in the comments below on what you think of the first trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance!

Star Wars on Blu-ray: HD Scenes

Star Wars, on their official youtube channel, has released a full HD scene from each movie to whet your appetite for the new Blu-ray release. (You can order it on Amazon here.)

Be sure you watch each of these clips in full 720p. They’re gorgeous.

First we have a podracing scene from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace:

This clip from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones offers us a look at the beginning of The Clone Wars:

Then, from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, we have a piece of Obi-wan and Anakin’s climactic duel on Mustafar:

Here, we get a fantastic look at first Star Destroyer flyby and some of the battle aboard the Tantive IV from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope:

This clip from Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back is one of the most striking moments in the entire saga: the beginning of the end of Vader’s fight with Luke on Bespin:

And finally, we have the “Return of the Jedi” sequence from Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi:

The Blu-rays come out on September 16th (the same day the season 4 opening of The Clone Wars premieres.)

“It will be a day long remembered.”

Ridley Scott Making a New Blade Runner

It was announced today that Ridley Scott has come aboard to produce and direct a new Blade Runner film. This project has been circling as a remake (which seemed unnecessary because the original still stands up so well as a masterpiece) but now this changes the game significantly.

Will it be a sequel?

Will it be a prequel?

Who knows. I saw Ridley Scott at Comic-Con a couple of years ago and he mentioned that he’d love to get back into the world and he’d love to do a sequel about Deckard’s life on the run with Rachel. Sean Young was in attendance and reminded Scott that she’d be happy to return. Would Harrison Ford come back? Would a movie about them thirty years later and on the run even work?

Who knows.

That was the same panel that Ridley Scott came out and proclaimed quite boldly that Deckard was a Replicant the whole time. Though Harrison Ford denies it vehemently.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

While the new movie is being described as a “follow-up” to the first film, the filmmakers have not yet disclosed whether it will function as a prequel or a sequel to the original.

Based on that, I would say it feels like this film is a long ways out. Aside from the fact that Scott is hip-deep in production on Prometheus, it sounds like they have no idea whatsoever what this film will be yet. But if we can get Ridley Scott back in the saddle telling another story in one of the most beloved Science-fiction universes ever created, then this is good news for all of us.

If, by some random accident, you haven’t seen the original Blade Runner, get the director’s definitive cut on Blu-ray. You can snag the five disc set on Amazon for less than $30. It’s a movie you’ll want to watch over and over again to study.

Additions to the Nerdorium

Every month I buy a shit ton of toys to add to my Nerdorium (A.K.A. home office). But I hardly ever get around to reviewing them on the site. I generally just talk about them on our monthly podcast (which you can listen to here, but I don’t recommend it). Similar to baldassbats Video Game Quick Hits, I’m going to try and do one for all the nerd shit I buy in a month. This month has been an exciting one. I just got a new job, and with it, a lot more income. Of course I spent a good chunk of my first check on collectibles. Also, my wife may or may not be leaving me.

Rock Man Plastic Model Kit
$27.99 EntertainmentEarth.com

When I was in high school I bought a lot of Rock Man Kits off of eBay. I lucked out and got four or five of them for one cent plus shipping. I loved those kits and had a lot of fun with them. Some day I hope to do a retro-review of them. You can imagine how excited I was when I saw the solicitation for new kits being released in the states.

PROS
• The details on these figures are wonderful.
• Plenty of extra hands and facial expressions to swap out.
• Great instructions which made building them a breeze.

CONS
• Kind of a high price point for these. I waited and got mine on a sale.
• Being a model kit, these figures fall apart pretty easily. Which can be frustrating while posing.

Sonic the Hedgehog: 20th Anniversary Through Time Action Figure (1991)
$11.99 Target

Oh, nostalgia. I’d say you’re responsible for at least two thirds of my purchases. I’m glad to see SEGA finally putting out some worthwhile figures of our favorite blue hedgehog. This figure follows the theme from the upcoming game, Sonic Generations. There are classic and modern versions of each of the characters available for the smaller format. I bought the larger five inch figure, which comes in classic or modern Sonic.

PROS
• Nostalgia.
• Great sculpt. From any angle it screams classic Sonic.
• Pretty well weighted for a top heavy figure. The smaller guys tend to fall over.

CONS
• Overly articulated. Sonic can twist at the pelvis, which leaves a big nasty break in his circular stomach.
• Some kind of serial number is printed on the inside of his shoe. There wasn’t a better spot?
• No accessories. Some rings or chaos emeralds would’ve been nice with the five inch figures.

Spider-Man 3 by Hot Toys
$149.99 Sideshow Collectibles

Man, Hot Toys sure has taken a lot of my money over the last few years. They keep getting better and better licenses. Most recently acquiring Star Wars. (Bespin Luke, anyone?) I was torn when this figure was pre-released. I love Spider-Man, but the third movie… not so much. Then again, the Wolverine figure Hot Toys released was based off of his solo movie. You know what? Fuck it. I’m buying one.

PROS
• As usual, this figure has spot on likeness to his big screen counterpart.
• Really awesome package design. My favorite box from the line.
• Webbing is printed on the outside of the costume, showing the attention to detail.
• Amazing (get it?) accessories. Lots of extra hands and webs. As well as a giant stand.
• Mid-range price point for a Hot Toys figure. $150 is very reasonable.

CONS
• I am so afraid to damage this guy. He’s the only spandex clad $150 doll I own. Although JJ (Lost In Comics) has put his figure through the ringer and says it holds up well.
• Being from Spider-Man 3, they are making a Mountain Dew Goblin to go with this. Hopefully they’ll go back and do a Doc Ock. I’d gladly play over $200 for him.

Stay Puft: Gozer the Destroyer
$70 Matty Collector

We’ve been going about this all wrong. This Mr. Stay Puft’s okay! He’s a sailor, he’s in New York; we get this guy laid, we won’t have any trouble!

PROS
• Over 20 inches tall and made from a squishy foam material. Largest Stay Puft ever made.
• Limited articulation at the shoulders, legs and head. Any more would ruin the sculpt.
• Comes with a gigantic cardboard diorama.

CONS
• San Diego Comic Con exclusive, therefore super hard to get ahold of.
• The foam is super fragile. Easily marked up, so be careful unpacking him.
• Face sculpt is good but not great. I prefer Gentle Giants piggy bank sculpt.
• I worry about discoloration over time, as well as general dust damage.
• Where the hell am I going to put him?

In conclusion I spent way too much money on toys this month. It’s hard to pick a favorite out of the bunch. I think Sonic has gotten the most attention from me. Especially for the value packed with nostalgia. Stay Puft is cool, but expensive for what he is. Same with the Rock Man kits. I love how my Spider-Man doll looks next to Wolverine and Batman. Next to join, Captain America. Now it’s time to get back to work so I can blow more cash on dolls.
