DCU IN 2010: THE WAR OF THE SUPERMEN BEGINS

 FCBD10_WOTSM-Cv0-fpo

Superman has left Earth in the hands of Nightwing, Flamebird, Mon-El and the Guardian.

The tensions between Earth and New Krypton are slowly rising. The winds of war are stirring.

As our very own Dan DiDio has teased numerous times, 2010 is going to be a huge year for Superman. But just what is going on has not been revealed.

Until now. Welcome to the WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

<http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/files/2009/12/fcbd10_wotsm-cv0-fpo.jpg>

This lovely piece of J.G. Jones artwork is the cover to WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, which will hit stands 5/1/10, as the DCU FREE COMIC BOOK DAY title, and will kick off an event that is sure to change Superman’s status quo.

What more can we say? Not a lot — we can tell you writer James Robinson and artist Eddy Barrows will be taking point on the issue — but we did manage to rope SUPERMAN Group Editor Matt Idelson for a quick tease about what’s to come. Take it away, Matt:

“WAR OF THE SUPERMEN is the culmination of literally years of stories in the Super-books, all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors. This Free Comic Book Day #0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred, and that they don’t want to miss this event.”

Not sated? Of course not. Then swing over to TIME’s TECHLAND blog for a few more nuggets of info.

With the absence of Superman from his main titles and his appearance in New Krypton, we’ve known that something big was on the horizon. Even going further back to James Robinson’s start on Superman and beyond, the seeds of a war between New Krypton and Earth have been there even before Kandor’s release from Braniac’s ship.

Like this year’s BLACKEST NIGHT #0, WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0 kicks off the storm of Supermen at war with Earth in the middle. With it’s promise of a conflict with no victors (as seen above), one can only hope for a complex story with various characters striving for their goals, even if they’re not wholly altruistic.

DC’s EARTH ONE OGN’s in 2010

By Alex Segura

That major publishing event we mentioned earlier today? Well, here it is.

Original stories featuring Batman and Superman in graphic novel form from the biggest creators out there. But these aren’t one-offs. We’re talking ongoing series of OGNs in a new continuity, on a new Earth.

Sound appealing?

Starting next year, DC Comics will unveil SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE, two graphic novels spotlighting the most powerful heroes of the DC Universe, with their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity.

Return to Smallville and experience the journey of Earth’s greatest adopted son, as he grows from boy to Superman in SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE by J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis.

Watch from the darkest corners of Crime Alley as a young boy is struck by unbelievable tragedy that will forge the greatest crime-fighter to ever stalk the rooftops of Gotham City in BATMAN: EARTH ONE, by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank.

What does JMS have to say? Well, here’s a snippet from his first interview on the subject:

“What I’m trying to do is to dig in to the character and look at him through modern eyes. If you were to create the Superman story today, for the first time, but keep intact all that works, what would it look like?”

“It is monumental for us as comic readers to see Superman birthed for the first time,” Davis said. “It’s a privilege to realize that you’re the artist that gets to draw it, better yet having the luxury to do it in an original graphic novel. This is going to be epic!”

What about Geoff Johns? Well, we happen to have a bit from his first interview as well:

“BATMAN: EARTH ONE allows Gary and I to break the restraints of any continuity and focus on two things: character and story.”

Want more? Sure you do. Why not check out the interviews AIN’T IT COOL NEWS just posted with the previously mentioned Johns and Straczynski?

 batman_fnl3

In a new series spinning into a modern streamlined all-access ongoing, DC launches it’s Earth One Graphic Novels.

Unlike All Star comics (All Star Superman, All Star Batman & Robin), the two books will be setting up an ongoing continuity/ story available in Original Graphic Novels (OGN’s). One could make the argument that with all the recent relaunches, origin redux, and retcons, that these books are not necessarily needed in the market right now.

 alfred_fnl3

However, these books are not really for the current monthly fan, both in story and format. I think it’s possible that the monthly reader can enjoy these books, but these books seem more for the outsider looking to read about Superman and/ or Batman without decades of baggage, Zero Hours, and Crises.

In a OGN format, these books wil no doubt be far more attractive to the bookstore buyer, the reader looking for an entry level book, non-mainstream comic readers and more. I really like this idea and format coupled with strong creators in hopes to bring new fans into the readership.

Monitor Tapes Mini-Cassette: Smallville “Absolute Justice” Trailer!

             mon-master1

The Smallville episodes “Society” and “Legends” now have an official episode name, “Absolute Justice”. As reported, the episode would guest-star Justice Society of America members Hawkman, Stargirl, and Doctor Fate. Well with the episode trailer we may get more than three JSA members, check out the video below!

Even if the other JSA members are brief flashbacks, that’s still amazing! Just look at the painting at the end! This is defiantly one of those “cool moments” you watch Smallville for!!!

Can we get Geoff Johns to write all episodes of Smallville from now on please?

First look at Hawkman in Smallville

             smalvillehawkman

            Via- tvguidemagazine.com

Geoff Johns’ two-parter “Society” and “Legends” (now reported as a two-hour episode opposed to the two episodes as originally planned), featuring the Justice Society of America (or JSA for short), has a lot of DC fans excited. This week TV Guide revealed the first JSA member in full costume, Michael Shanks as Carter Hall/Hawkman that’s already starting controversy amongst fans.

Well, we’ve all complained for years about the lack of costumes in Smallville, now it looks like we may complain about a costume being too accurate! Michael Shanks (of Stargate SG1 fame) is set to don the Nth Metal wing harness of Hawkman, the multiple-times reincarnated alien Thangarian.

On the plus side, it is an accurate Hawkman costume (I know I said it may be too accurate), but possibly this means we’ll have more costumed super-types (Clark, I’m looking in your direction). Plus, it may look better on screen with the actor moving around (I really didn’t like the Batman costume or the Tumbler until I saw it on the screen in Batman Begins). And if we’re lucky (and judging by the TV Guide interview with Shanks), we’ll get an Ollie/Carter throw-down possibly resulting in some Bwa-Ha-HAs!

Really though, the whole reason to watch Smallville is an exercise in “waiting for something cool to happen”, i.e. waiting for Superman to well, be Super, and stuff from the comics. Really though, Hawkman in his Hawkman gear and the JSA is one of those cool things, even if his outfit looks a bit goofy.

All that remains to be seen is how the other members (Brent Stait Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate), Britt Irvin Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl) will appear. Will they have comic-accurate costumes as well?

            Superman Returns Directors Cut petition

             superman-inspace

Love it or hate it, Superman Returns (despite the absentee dad stalker parts) was both a decent Superman movie and an homage to the original films (not counting 3 and 4). Ignoring the Land Barron Lex Luthor and the love triangle, the first time I watched it gave me that sense of wonder I had watching the original first two movies.

(As far as I can tell, it’s not an official trailer, rather a fan made trailer with the cut-out footage. If I’m wrong let me know and I’ll update it)

Additional bonus footage can be found via the link below-

            Superman Returns cut scenes

Superman Returns is by far no perfect Superman movie (though I’d say that about the originals as well), but SR did feel like something was missing, especially the part with his trip to the remains of Krypton. Whenever given a choice, I always opt for the directors cut (or extended version with bonus material). Seeing as I’ve still not bought SR, I’d defiantly go out and buy it on the release day if it becomes available in an extended  director’s cut.

            Quote-

            “Do you want help us?

DC Universe The Color of Fear: Romat-Ru and Karu-Sil Figures now available! + Wave  11 to be offered on Mattycollector.com

             dcuc11

Online ordering went live this Monday for the Sinestro Corps two-pack of Romat-Ru and Karu-Sil. Origianaly plannes as the first of the last two DCU figue 2-packs. According to actionfigurepics.com, Mattel says the orders have been strong for the figures. I’d imagine it’s due to the figures themselves (especially for Green Lantern fans) as they’re more popular visible characters as opposed to previous offerings.

             Color-of-Fear-2-pack p4023_fullsizeimage01

Also announced, DC Universe Wave 11 will be available on Mattycollector.com sometime after the holidays. Wave 11 will be sold as a case of eight figures including both versions of Steppenwolf.

Good news for DC fans, especially with the current Wave 10 Wal-Mart Exclusive “Unavailability” and impossible to find anywhere Wave 11 (and virtually nonexistent Target exclusive Public Enemies line) . Don’t get me wrong, I’ve at least seen Wave 10 come out and hit my local area (and sold before even getting a glimpse of the figures with the exception of Power Girl and Morrison JLA Era Batman), but they’re impossible to find just like previous releases. Seriously, how difficult should it be to get a damned Robotman figure?

According to Mattel the Wave 11 figures were to be heavily ordered with wide-spread availability. Unfortunately as with previous waves, they’ve barely had time to breath before being bought up by collectors and ebay resellers. As a matter of fact, it’s probably easier to find the figures on ebay and pay the $20-$30 plus shipping if you’re willing to part with 2 to 3 times the price (though you may find the figure loose without the Build-a-Figure part for half that).

Most of the goodness of the DCU figures is the random characters slipped into the line that are not Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman. I’ve been collecting DC Direct and DC Classics (when I can find them) for years now, but the difficulty in finding the figures is starting to kill my interest in DC Figures. Between the cost of plastic resulting in almost $20 pricing on DC Direct and the inability to find the DC Classics line, it’s really killing my interests in figures, despite my love of all things DC.

With the upcoming online availability of Wave 11, hopefully this will help fans wanting the figures by having the ability to purchase them for their collections. Also, some Toys r’ Us are test-marketing pre-pays on the DCU figures not unlike pre-paying for a video game before release. Hopefully this will expand to all TrU’s and possibly lead into larger orders.

Do you really need another reason to pick this up? Hawkman (now a BL) tries to reunite Ray Palmer with his dead-now-Black Lantern ex-wife Jean!

STARMAN #81 by James Robinson (Superman: New Krypton, Justice League: Cry for Justice)

Again, you don’t need a reason to pick this up other than it’s gonna be awesome! No Jack Knight (as he’s living out his life with Sadie and his son in San Francisco), but plenty of Opal characters to revisit, and plenty of corpses to dig up.

Artists on the books are TBA, but wouldn’t it be cool to see Tony Harris come back for the Starman issue!?!? Also, is it possible some of the titles could be a bit of a “taster” to see if there’s a market for the titles? I’d love to see Suicide Squad come back in a new form, and really want to see Captain Marvel and Co. back in some form. Don’t get me wrong, I’m digging Marvel JR in JL:CFJ as a modern Marvel, but how ‘bout Billy in JSA (as the classic Marvel) and Mary struggling with her “Dark-Sied” (pun intended) questioning whether or not she’s a villain or hero? Seems like a missed opportunity with what’s happened to her post Final Crisis. And I really want an Atom and Hawkman book again, especially with the double feature books DC’s producing right now.

GREEN LANTERN LOOKING FOR NEW CRASH SITE?

             green-lantern

“SYDNEY — The falling U.S. dollar has forced Warner Bros. Pictures to reassess the viability of shooting a number of projects in several countries, after confirming Friday that it’s pulling production of “Green Lantern” out of Australia.

The studio said that “the current global economic situation, including fluctuations in currency valuation and overall costs,” forced the decision, in a statement issued through agency Screen NSW.

“We have also had to reassess film projects in other countries as well,” it said.”

So GL’s grounded while a new location is found. My backyard is cheap and likes like a barren wasteland, as no grass will grow there. WB, if you’re reading, I can make you a deal you can’t refuse! All seriousness though, Utah is fairly cheap, and think of how cool the possible landscapes south of Salt Lake could be used (Arches National Park). Plus, we’ve got an Air Force Base!

            SINESTRO CAST?

             sinestro

            Via IO9.COM io9.com- http://io9.com/5384303/rorschach-is-not-sinestro-yet

“Depending on whose exclusive you believe, the Green Lantern movie still hasn’t found its Sinestro just yet. Rumored first choice for the role Jackie Earle Hayley is telling everyone that no-one’s asked him yet.”

I don’t usually pay much attention to casting rumors, as they’re just that, rumors at best. Latest casting rumor making the rounds is that of Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, A Nightmare on Elm Street) via fan demand. Per the article, apparently “geek fans” are making themselves heard in hopes of WB casting Haley.

Following one of the two article links provides the following information-

“Shortly after receiving an Oscar nomination for “Little Children,” the Internet began buzzing with fans insisting that Jackie Earle Haley would make an ideal Rorschach in the “Watchmen” movie. When “Watchmen” hit theaters, many fans began lobbying for Haley to become the new Freddy Krueger.

Now, with “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in the can, Haley showed up to Saturday’s Spike TV “Scream Awards” having just learned about another possible gig from the Internet: playing the supervillain Sinestro in “Green Lantern.”

“I just heard about this, literally,” Haley told MTV News of an anonymously sourced report on Ain’t It Cool News claiming he will be offered the role of arch-enemy to Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan in the soon-to-shoot blockbuster.”

            VIA MTV- http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/10/18/exclusive-jackie-earle-haley-addresses-green-lantern-sinestro-rumors/

I’m not one to really get behind fan wishlist casting, simply because I’m not a casting director nor do I work in the film industry. True, just like the typical “Can Superman be cud by Wolverines adamantum claws” type-debates, geek fan-casting is one of those things where everyone has an opinion, as especially in the geek world. Almost more intence than sports debates is that of what actor should play character “X” in movie “Y”.

Do I see him being able to pull it off? Yes, but then again I’m all for any good actor playing a great part. Thusly, I’m more concerned about the scripting than the casting at this stage. And with the news above regarding pulling out of Australia, I’m really not overly concerned about the casting until it actually happens.

            BATMAN #691

             bm691

Written by Judd Winick ; Art by Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter ; Cover by Tony Daniel

Wrapping up the first arc of Batman post Batman: Reborn, #691 picks up back at the beginning of the first issue of the arc, #687. Now we see the shadowy figure standing over Dick’s crumpled body upon the floor is Harvey Dent/ Two Face. Seems the drugs are not agreeing with Dick as he hallucinates Harvey in a dual-tone Batman costume!

Dent’s convinced that this “new” Batman is not the original batman, with good reason as mentioned multiple times throughout the arc and again here. Thanks to a shadowy save by Alfred donning a cowl himself, Dick manages to defeat Two-Face and convince him he’s the real deal.

As fast as Dent was taken down, he’s rescued from transport to Blackgate Prison by Black Mask and his army of Arkham nutters. When given a choice of working for Black Mask or getting out of town, Harvey opts for the latter deciding a road trip is best.

The issue ends with a “Dun, Dun, DUUNNNN!” reveal moment you’ll have to read yourself, though it will make you curious as to what it’s going to mean in the long run. Overall, a pretty standard Batman story that was a fairly quick read. Not a bad thing, but I feel like I’m still waiting for the “definitive” Dick as Batman story.

BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #3 (OF 3)

             bmbl3

Written by Peter J. Tomasi; Art by Ardian Syaf and John Dell; Cover by Andy Kubert; Variant cover by Bill Sienkiewicz

Ends with a bit of a “huh?” but otherwise an OK read altogether.

Over the 3 issue mini, the final issue drops “hints” and mainly just wraps things up rather quickly. As always with event stories, writers have to either work with the new playground and toys presented from another’s vision, or forcefully work a story around said event as the writer’s flow is interrupted mid stream.

In the case of Batman: Blackest Night, it’s not forced as it’s contained within it’s own mini-series, in addition to having the luxury of having one of the Blackest Night wingmen helming. Tomasi, also of this weeks Green Lantern Corps #41 has a handle and knowledge on Blackest Night than most DC writers (I’m assuming) and is probably no. 2 next to Geoff Johns in the BN story.

Picking up from the previous issue, Batman (Dick), Robin (Damien) Red Robin (Tim), James Gordon and Barbra Gordon (possessed by Deadman AKA Boston Brand) crash the Bat-Dirigible (it’s what I’m calling it) into a graveyard after the hit and run from the Black Lanterns. As the group “regroups”, Batman has the Gordons’ go on the run with Damien to escape while Deadman goes and recruits the Demon.

After a surreal David Lynch style romp with the former Robins’ reliving their parent’s deaths, the two’s emotions start running high. As the adopted son’s “ripen” at the overwhelming emotions, the Black Lanterns strike trying to pry their hearts from their chests. Thankfully, Deadman/ Demon arrives and starts trashing BL ass at the last minute saving them albeit temporarily from the attacks.

While Batman, Red Robin and Deadman driving the body of the Demon realize they’re only slowing them down. Pulling a page from “Dutch’s” playbook in Predator, a quick delivery via Damien drops a freeze gun (one of Mr. Freeze’s guns from the Bat-Arsenal) that’s quickly used to freeze both Red Robin and Batman, making them invisible to the BL’s.

Overall, enjoyable but the last issue here feels extremely rushed. I’d imagine there’s not an abundance of time in regards to writing and publishing these tie-in books. Not necessary to enjoy Blackest Night, but not bad if you want to read about the Bat-Family interacting with Blackest Night.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA 80-PAGE GIANT

Written by Chuck Kim, Josh Williamson, Rich Fogel and others; Art by Mahmud Asrar, Adrian Syaf and others; Cover by Jay Anacleto

Despite being a mixed bag at times, I love the 80 Page Giants. It’s been a while since one’s “Officially” come out (not counting the Holiday specials that are about the same), so despite my 50/50 optimism/ pessimism I picked up the latest one, despite the massive price tag (though it does have a massive page count to be fair).

The framing of the story is probably my favorite part of the story, picking up from Greg Rucka’s “Final Crisis- Resist” where Barbara Ann Minerva, AKA Cheetah and JLA mascot and Checkmate operative Lucas “Snapper” Carr have one of those Zero-Hour Armageddon trysts. Snapper hanging out at the old mountain base formerly used by the JLA find Barbra sneak up on him looking for love, or lust depending on how you look at it. These two hooking up in FC-S and continuing the story here is one of those complicated character dynamics I’m fond of reading about, Snapper the “Hero” working for a spy agency and not as trusted by the JLA due to said affiliation, and the “Villainess” Cheetah, foe to Wonder Woman, member of the Society (of Villains) and Injustice League. These two together make a great pair, and I hope to see more, despite from being from opposite sides of the tracks, it’s a very human dynamic not often seen in DC comics of late.

The main story goes into the JLA (featuring the current-non line up and the big guns absent of late, though still missing Batman) up against Epoch, AKA The Lord of Time. Really though, it’s just an introductory framing sequence regarding the “Worlds Greatest Superheroes” paring up lost in time. Despite being a throwback to the old Justice League stories, it’s refreshing and gives a spotlight on the characters (though small and brief) as opposed to the JLA army barreling down on a massive menace only the team can take on together (though in the end that’s what they end up doing to a degree). As the League disappears into time via Epoch’s attack, Snapper freaking out gets a grip as Barbra tries to explain they’ll be back due to her “Cat’s instinct”. The Time Commander pops into the story providing dynamic exposition regarding the situation, more on that later.

The small stories are fun, starting with Green Lantern and Red Arrow in the old west, the two of them end up in a bar brawl resulting in the arrest of plain close Hal because they are funny lookin’ outsiders (a redneck in any time…). As Hal recounts the recent events from his cell, Sheriff “Bully” as we’ll call him insults Hal and tells him to get ready for hanging and burning his body after.

Meanwhile, Roy, AKA Red Arrow is regrouping with the help of Cinnamon, AKA Katherine “Kate” Manser, reincarnation of Egyptian princess Chay-Ara (recently resurrected in this weeks Green Lantern #46) and future Hawkwomen. The pair go off to rescue Hal and show up at the last minute as the hanging begins. Needless to say, I’m sure you can figure out the rest.

The remaining pair-ups include Vixen and Green Lantern John Stewart teaming up with the original Shining Knight in the days of Camelot. Despite the culture shock of the Europeans, the JLAers help them against the forces of Morgan Le Fey. Zatanna and Black Canary end up in the late thirties and save the Crimson Avenger from lead poisoning, swooning over the legend who inspired much of the DCU. One of the funnier stories includes Firestorm and Green Arrow, hanging out on an island for two months due to Ollie’s worry about the “Space-Time Continuum” (He saw it in an episode of Star Trek). They encounter the Bride (Frankenstein’s four armed ex) who’s trying to stop Ra’s Al Ghul from reaching a Lazarus Pit (turns out he was married to the Bride as well). Despite Ollie’s worries, he tries to kill Ra’s, where Firestorm realizes they have changed the future, so he fixes it with hilarious results (probably my favorite story.

Skipping over the last couple of team ups (mostly for space), the end wraps up with Snapper helping the Time Commander with the grudging assistance of Cheetah. The Lord of Time is trying to kill the Commander’s grandmother who was just born. With the knowledge provided Snapper uses his powers (teleportation) to “disarm” Epoch, only to learn in the end there was more to the story than was said to him.

Thoroughly enjoyable, the book isn’t going to blow you away (especially with the $5.99 price tag). It’s an enjoyable thick read, somewhat distracted from due to what looks to be rushed art with inconsistencies and color errors. Not that that’s really going to ruin the stories themselves, but it can be a bit distracting at times. If you like JLA or even Justice League Unlimited, you can’t really go wrong picking it up. But for the casual fan, probably live without it.

SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN #1 (OF 6)

             smso

Written by Geoff Johns; Art by Gary Frank and Jon Sibal; Covers by Gary Frank

Superman Secret Origin is the third “official” retelling/ retcon of the origin of the Man of Steel post Crisis on Infinite Earths, to some this may seem redundant, but it’s the first “Origin” story that focuses on Clark Kent years of discovery and the difficulties of growing up while learning about himself.

Out of all the versions of Clark Kent’s formative years, Secret Origin is the absolute best! Tough I’ve been partial of Mark Waid’s “Superman Birthright”, due to it’s inclusion of going back to the original “origin” over John Byrne’s “Man of Steel” reboot. Unlike Birthright however, Johns’ focuses on young Clark, making the character’s story a coming of age that’s easily relatable, as Johns excels at writing characters both believable and relatable.

Not to say there’s anything wrong with MOS, Birthright, or any other retelling of the Superman origin story, but Secret Origin goes directly into the development of Clark Kent as he struggles to understand his own self. As many debate the thousands of characters in the comic worlds as to whether the costume or the “secret ID” is truly the person, the story lets Clark shine as it should. Despite being from Krypton, being able to fly, and all the other things that make up Superman, the most important part of the character is Clark Kent, it’s who he is!

Superman would not be superman without Clark Kent, without the loving family who raised him, friends, and lessons he learned growing up in Smallville, Kansas, Kal El of Krypton would not have the nobility and selfless nature that makes Superman great.

The story starts with a young Clark staring off to the sun with a single page intro with the words “Why are you here?”, within the story a question in regards to the kids playing football including best friend Pete Ross. While having context within the story, it also doubles as a deeper question setting up the story as Clark begins his journey of self discovery.

As Clark catches the ball and thrills to the excitement of inclusion (beautifully mastered through he art of Gary Frank, who has some of the best, most expressive story telling ability in the realm of comic artists), he unfortunately manages to break Pete’s arm when he tries to tackle Clark. What’s great is the fact Clark knows something strange is going on with himself (as later evidenced in the story) and feels terrible and dumps guilt upon himself for the accident, despite his growing strength, it could have easily happened to two normal kids without either of them having super-powers.

After the arrival of an ambulance and Clark’s father, John Kent, the ride home is portrayed as mostly silent with the exception of John questioning Clark’s “fabrication” regarding him telling his father he was going to the library. John does not press the issue as he can not only see how much guilt and suffering his adoptive son is going through, but also as not knowing what to do as their family dynamic is not normal as to be evidenced later (though I’m sure you know why already).

As the story progressed along with Clark’s abilities, his past and genetic parents are revealed when John decides that Clark needs to know, much to Martha’s dismay as it will change everything. While at first as the Kents’ reveal the rocket that they found Clark in becomes a discovery of elation to him, it soon turns to revulsion and horror as Jor El and Lara reveal themselves. Through the recordings upon the ship, the long dead parents tell the familiar tale of the last days of Krypton. In a first, the story is woven in to the story as natural exposition, complementing the story rather than starting it. Clark runs off crying into the night after these revelations only wanting to be “Clark Kent”, son of John and Martha.

The story perfectly takes the backdrop of Clark’s early teens (a strange time for any teenager) and uses it as a double whammy as Clark begins dealing with his emerging powers. That along with the introduction of those in his life during those difficult years (including an early meeting with Lex Luthor) makes the first book of the series a strong story and introduction to the boy who will become Superman. My favorite part of the book being the final page introducing the introduction of the union-super suit we all know and love along with Clark’s embarrassed reaction to it.

Superman Secret Origin is possibly the most perfect Superman story introducing the character in a difficult time in his life. With all the previous history, it’s fresh and important and less of a retread. As a matter of fact, it’s just damn wonderful to read, and possibly the greatest origin for comics’ greatest hero!

            DOOM PATROL #2

             dp2v5

Back on Oolong (the island, not the tea) Dusty debriefs president Veronica Cale (head of the mad scientists nation) on the mission in the previous issue. As Dusty explanesthat the project was only damaged, due to Amanda Beckett going all brundle-fly on DP’s asses and escaping. While Cale callously chastises Dusty for not and the DP for not killing her, Dusty retorts with the body count they just endured. Unfortunatly for her, Cale in not so many words establishes their moniker of “Doom Patrol” is their mission statement in not so many words, though she may as well call them “Suicide Squad” from what she expects.

And in the brief notation in Cale’s journal establishes “Chief” Niles caulder is still a bit of a dick. Though I’m sure this tidbit has more to do with a future development.

And that’s probably the most straight-laced part of the book, as DP’s briefed and thrust into negotiations with a black hole. Yes, a Black Hole! This is what comics are made for folks!

And we’re only three pages in.

As the bickering gets rolling, Cliff (AKA Robotman) questions the Chief’s authority as par usual, but not unwarranted as they’ve only had six hours downtime since the Bekkett fiasco. After crapping on the DCU team echelon starting with the Justice League and working his way down, in a pre-emptive manner as a matter of fact.

Over in Brandenburg, Germany (location of the Vulcan Supercollider and the sentient Black Hole) the doctor who called Niles for help converses with the strange anomaly. As the body of Project Director Karl Straus housing the black hole inquires as to why Dr. Waid Ackerman called Niles and the Doom Patrol rather than President Cale, he responds explaining that her abilities are rather limited in her position and capacity. Ackerman wholly unaware while his conversation continues, as his face twists away and becomes devoured by the Black Hole as it takes him over to gain a better understanding of him and his actions. As he leaves the office to stroll through the work area, the pull back reveals the project employees to all have the “extended benefits” of being a vessel for the Black Hole. Upon the entity requiring more info regarding “DP”, a quick search by the secretary/ Black Hole finds the “Omnipedia” entry rather lacking in general, not to mention the numerous “deleted” informational entries.

Back on Oolong, Rocky and Bumblebee (living in Rita’s room in a dollhouse, thanks to her accident in Infinite Crisis leaving her diminutive in stature) discus her failed marriage to Mal Duncan (AKA Vox, another “accident” survivor). With a quick change of subject pointing back to Rita, a quick scan by the Chief reveals that despite her protests, she’s not OK. Then again, would you after being exposed to mist that transforms you into an elastic giant, only to end up dying on a suicide mission and come back after being cloned from your skull, and to have it revealed that the accident that gave you powers was not accidental and was in fact your mad scientist leader behind it all?

As the DP lands (dropping from a helicopter) and encounters the Black Hole, the curious visitor eagerly greets them, quite surprised that their meeting does not include the usual slugfest hullabaloo so common to these meetings. While exchanging inquiries, as the Black Hole decides to “Take them to their leader”, the security detail cocks their guns and trains them on Larry, Cliff and Rita, as the being asks them to “Show me what you’ve got”. As Cliff Tossed Larry and Rita in the air to protect them from the seconds away barrage of bullets, the previously expected fight is on, merely for the Black Hole to study in brief.

I’m thoroughly impressed with Keith Giffen’s ability to pack story into the 20 pages within by adding in the running emails, journals, web pages and view-screens. While telling an ongoing story, he still manages to pack backstory and future hints in the issue making it more than worth the cover price. The remaining pages of the story really zoom back into that Doom Patrol territory that is the Doom Patrol through and through without being a retread. Giffen’s got DP and knows how the series and characters should progress, this is bar none the best DP book since the original and Morrison runs, a must for DP fans!
