COMICS: ‘Spider-Verse’ Promises Every Spider-Man Ever

As far as early sneak peeks go, this one is quite a bit early because the book isn’t due until November 2014. Apparently though, it totally warrants it. I think the press release from Marvel speak for itself, as do the images below. That being said the plan appears to be to put in one comic, “Spider-Verse”, every Spider-Man in history!?

I’ll point out as many as I can and let you fill in the rest in the comments below Marvel’s official press release (for the full sized image click here).

Every Spider-Man in History Unite for SPIDER-VERSE!

This November, prepare for every Spider-Man…ever! Marvel is proud to announce Spider-Verse, the biggest Spider-Man story of the year from New York Times Best-Selling Spider-Scribe Dan Slott and blockbuster artist Olivier Coipel!

Kicking off this November in Amazing Spider-Man #9 (with a special lead-in story on Free Comic Book Day), Slott and Coipel assemble an legion of Spider-Men from every corner of every universe. Peter Parker, Miguel O’Hara, Miles Morales and many, many more must unite to stop a seemingly insurmountable super-powered foe. Morlun, an incredibly powerful villain has returned with a singular and terrifying goal – exterminate every Spider-Man in every universe! It will take thousands of spider-powered heroes to battle back the greatest threat to this universe or any other!

“The scope of this event is so big, the word ‘epic’ just doesn’t do it justice,” says editor Nick Lowe. “The story is just huge and heartbreaking and has necessitated spreadsheets to organize all the Spider-Men. Luckily we have a writer who has proven time and time again he can thread impossible story-needles [Slott] and the most versatile character artist in the business [Coipel].”

Fans can see the first hints of this event in April’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 but will get their first real taste of Spider-Verse in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day Guardians of the Galaxy issue this with a special 5-page lead-in story available for free at all participating comic shops on May 3rd. This fall, Spider-Verseunites every Spider-Man in history to drive back the forces of darkness. But will an army of Spiders be enough?

Don’t miss the blockbuster Spider-Man event that will have the Marvel Universe on the edge of its seat when Spider-Verse hits comic shops this November! Plus, don’t miss the start of the next big chapter in Spider-Man history in Amazing Spider-Man #1 on-sale this April!

Spotted in the expanded cover for “Spider-Verse” #1 above is regular Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales and Peter Parker), Spider-Woman AKA Jessica Drew, Ultimate Spider-Woman AKA Peter’s Clone AKA Jessica Drew AKA Black Widow, Spider-Man 2099 Miguel O’Hara, Spock (Spider-Man possessed by Otto Octavios), Scarlet Spider v1.0, Scarlet Spider v2.0, Spider-Man with Iron Man Tech AKA Iron Spidey, Spider NOIR Spider-Man, Spiderman the Other, Black Spiderman aka Symbiote Spider-Man, 8 limb Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, Carnage, Venom, Spider-Pig AKA Spider-Ham, Earth-X, & Captain Spider. TRAILER: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

A new trailer has hit the web for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”  According to the title of the video it is the final trailer we’re getting before the movie releases in May. There is a little bit of duplicate content from previous trailers but not much. And there’s plenty of new stuff.

Right up front we get some incredible acrobatics. I love Raimi’s trilogy but we never saw Spider-Man do anything like this. Just watching him soar, even when he’s not fighting, is enjoyable.

Despite being a markedly darker turn from the previous trilogy, it seems they’ve also kept a handle on one of the central characteristics of Peter Parker, his humor. Between “laundry sheriff,” “cleaning the chimney,” and “it’s all in the wrist” they’ve clearly left room to remind us that through it all Parker keeps a light look on life. This is important, otherwise he becomes Batman in red and blue tights.

We also get a taste of our villains uniting in a quick scene wherein Harry and Electro decide to “catch a spider” plus additional footage of various battles.  If the trailer is to be believed, we’re setting up for a couple hours of solid epic battles.

Ever since the first trailer, the shot of Spider-Man swinging a man hole cover at the Rhino has had me geeking out, hard. In this trailer we get to see it again and from the side. The last few seconds of the Rhino running on all fours while Spider-Man spins at him with a round slab of steel are worth watching on repeat. To that end… look at this!

The trailer is below. How psyched are you?

MOVIES: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Super Bowl Ad Part 1

Even if you don’t like football tuning into the Super Bowl this Sunday will be worth it just to see this ad in full. Here is part 1.

Looks awesome right? What do you think Internet, will Gwen’s fate be sealed in the sequel or will we have to wait for number 3?

BREAKING: Peter Parker to Return to Spider-Man

Greetings, Spider-Fans!

The NY Daily News has just published a major scoop: Peter Parker will return to his webslinging duties in April with “Amazing Spider-Man #1”  This has been rumoured since earlier this week when the cover art below was released once again showing a grinning Spider-Man that could only be the real Parker, but finally confirmed with today’s news article.

Peter Parker swings back into action

It’s been a long year without Parker, who has been absent from his own book for just over a year. For those not up to speed on the continuity, late last year, villain Otto Octavious (aka Dr. Octopus) switched bodies with Spider-Man, leaving Peter Parker stuck in his terminally ill body. So when “Octavious” kicked the bucket, so did Peter’s psyche. This body-switching and killing off of a major character prompting everything from death threats to highest praise for writer Dan Slott. As of the past few issues of the “Superior Spider-Man,” Octavious has now found himself merged with the Venom symbiote. Superior, indeed.

Regardless, we all knew it was only a matter of time before Peter Parker came back for realsies, right? First, there were the numerous times Octavious found himself arguing with Parker’s “ghost” in his mind. A little Ben Kenobi/Incredible Hulk, maybe, but it wasn’t like Parker was really completely gone those first few issues.

Even after Octavious seemingly was able to rid himself of Parker’s conscience, it seemed clear Marvel would bring Peter Parker back and relaunch an “Amazing Spider-Man” title. The answer is all about the $$$$$$$$$$$.

One important date to remember is May 2, 2014 – the day “Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits theaters and looks to smash box office records like its predecessors in the franchise. Did anyone ever think Marvel would keep Doc Ock in Spidey’s body through then? Because they totally wanted this to happen:

INT: A comic book store

Impressionable Youth: I just got out of the new Spider-Man movie and it was awesome! I wanted to get some Spider-Man comics
Clerk: Sure! This is the latest issue, and in it, Spider-Man is actually Doctor Octopus, who I know, he wasn’t in this movie, but he was actually the villain in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, directed by Sam Raimi, which is the best Spider-Man movie of the franchise and here’s why. . .
{Youth backs out of store slowly, never to return)

And. . . scene. Instead, what Marvel wants to do is have a helpful, not at all scary clerk say: “Sure, this just came out a few weeks ago—‘Amazing Spider-Man #1.’ It’s a perfect jumping-off point. And here, try out this ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ Volume 1 trade paperback. Read both of those and then come back and tell me which you like and I can give you more suggestions.”

Indeed, writer Dan Slott visited Andrew Garfield, himself a huge fan of the character and comics, on the set of Amazing Spider-Man 2 and promised him Peter would be back by the time the film premiered.

The second financial decision here is the consideration of relaunching with a first issue in a new series.  Why? Because those sell like hotcakes, son! According to Diamond Distribution, Issue #1’s made up almost every single one of the 10 titles sold in 2013.

Top selling comics 2013

With Marvel knowing that movie releases also cause an uptick in comic sales, this was bound to happen. And not at all coincidental that it’s happening when it is.

What it has been, for me at least, is a palliative. It’s that bite of ginger to clear your tongue for the next piece of sushi. Since 1963, Spider-Man has been about one guy battling more or less the same villains. The “Brand New Day” was supposed to reset Spider-Man, but that to me was just a cop out. “Superior Spider-Man” has been a breath of fresh air, as Doc Ock’s Spidey is mean, arrogant, and kind of a jerk. Getting little Petey Parker back will be perfect, and I’m not the only one who thinks so.

In fact, Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso said, “I do feel people will appreciate him a little more after this. I do think people have been taking him for granted.”

Dan Slott has taken to Facebook and Twitter warning of spoilers that may come out between now and Wednesday, so he’s advising those who are spoiler averse to go on social media blackout until you get your issue this Wednesday (of course!)

“We’ve gone over 30 issues without Peter Parker, so when we let him out of that box and he gets to put on that costume again and he gets to swing through the sky, it’s going to be the greatest feeling,” says Slott.
“But there’s a twist. There’s always a twist.”

Slott’s also been a naughty boy, confirming to the Daily News that the plan from the beginning was always to bring Peter back. But in the meantime, he’s made some people cry. Some are over-privileged loudmouth fanboys who deserve it. Others are little kids:

“To do that for a solid year of my life, that’s the hardest thing I’ve had to do — to look small children in the eye at a convention and lie to them,” Slott told The Daily News. “Inside, part of me was dying.”

Lying to children? Naughty.

But bringing back Peter Parker will be nice.

Check it out when “Superior Spider-Man #25” hits shelves, and make sure you tell your local comic shop to add “Amazing Spider-Man #1” to your pull/hold as soon as you can.

Batman Loses His Cool in Times Square and Spider-Men Calm Him Down

Those of you who have been to Times Square in New York are probably familiar with the, um, entertainers who dress in (bad) costumes to take photos with tourists. The same thing happens outside the Chinese theater in Los Angeles, and sometimes these characters make headlines.

In the video below, Batman is accused of swearing in front of a child, and the Gotham police get involved. Where’s Commissioner Gordon when you need him? The video is NSFW for language since Batman does, in fact, swear. Loudly.

He’s so agitated that not one but two Spider-Men approach and try to get him to calm down, as he keeps shouting, “I know a gangster when I see one!”

COMICS: Superior Spider-Man #25 Promises to Be a Shocker!

Many have wondered how long Dan Slott can continue to tell stories about Spock (Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man’s body). Well, we might have an answer soon because the Venom symbiote has infected Peter’s body. Last time this happened Peter was in control of his body and mind. He successfully beat back the symbiote but can Otto Octavius do the same? Does this spell the beginning of the end for Dr. Ock’s scheme?

The story arc after this one is Goblin Nation and there has been some speculation about another Marvel Now! re-numbering reboot after that. Will the Venom symbiote mean the death of Pete’s loved ones or will Dr. Ock be revealed for the fraud that he is? Here are some preview pages of Superior Spider-Man #24 for you to enjoy while you think about that one. Remember to sound off in the comment boards below so we can all have a rousing discussion about the fate of everyone’s favorite web head. Also, if you have any theories I’d love to hear them so send me a tweet @MarkAvo

TRAILER BREAKDOWN: Amazing Spider-Man 2

Over the last year we have gotten production shots and teaser images for next summer’s Amazing Spider-Man 2. This morning we finally got a full fledged trailer. As a Spider-Man super nerd, I’d like to break this down a bit and really look at what we’re being shown. Not only for this movie, but possibilities for future sequels.

Let’s start with what’s on the forefront of my mind, the rogues gallery of villains. We know of four villains that will definitely be getting screen time in the series. The Lizard appeared in the first film, and is currently locked up on Riker’s Island. If you recall, he was paid a visit by a shadowy figure in the film’s credits. This second movie will feature Rhino, Electro and the Green Goblin. I am guessing in that order. In this trailer we are teased with the Vulture’s wings and Doctor Octopus’s arms.

Rhino Transformation

Paul Giamatti will be playing Aleksei Sytsevich, A.K.A. The Rhino. Believe it or not, it is rumored Paul pushed to get the roll because of his love of the character. In the trailer we see him having a few run ins with Spider-Man. My prediction is his first crime spree is foiled by Peter. Somehow he gets that mech suit covered in Russian symbols to seek revenge on Spider-Man. It is worth noting that he is the only villain that hasn’t been genetically altered. Because of this, I believe he is operating independent of Oscrop and Norman Osborn. I also believe this means after being defeated, Oscorp will approach him for an experiment to become something closer to the human and rhino hybrid. Most likely revealed in the fourth film of this series, but I will get to that in a minute.

Harry the Goblin

The take on the Green Goblin is an interesting one. It seems as though they are going to jump straight to Harry as the Goblin, instead of Norman. The screenshot certainly looks like Harry. Maybe by the third movie they will have cured whatever it is that is killing Norman turning him into the goblin in the process. Either way, my money is on Harry the Goblin in this movie. Him and Peter don’t seem to be the chums they were in Sam Raimi’s movies.

I haven’t looked, but I am sure there is an uproar about the portrayal of the Green Goblin. For a lot of people, if it doesn’t look like the comic, it doesn’t work for them. Which is silly. If you haven’t, take a look at Sam Raimi’s tests he did for the Green Goblin. I do not see how this would have translated well to the big screen. Obviously neither did Raimi. I am hoping the Goblin story arc is a slow burn and he isn’t revealed until later in the movie.

Spider-Man does well in the comics at bouncing between multiple villains having slow burns over a long period of time. Not every villain needs a beginning, middle, and end to their story in one movie. Trying to do that with Electro, Rhino and the Goblin would be tough to pull off. I hope Rhino gets the least development and randomly shows up while Peter is swinging around. This might be more interesting and show the random onslaught of bad guys Spider-Man deals with every day.

If it’s not obvious enough, and the teases from the studio didn’t tip you off, I will… They are building up for a Sinister Six movie, rumored to be number four. I am predicting they spend movie number two with the villains addressed above. More of Goblin, Doc Ock, and Vulture in the third. I also think our dear Gwen will meet her fate in the third movie. All of these things culminating into a Sinister Six for the fourth. I also predict Connors A.K.A. The Lizard is conflicted and switches sides to help Peter.

In the trailer Peter also uncovers some more of the secrets about his father. It reminds me of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic, where Peter’s Dad and Eddie Brock’s Dad developed a suit to cure cancer. This was found to be more useful as a weapon and eventually is what Venom is made out of. Peter’s parents demise was due to the company Richard Parker worked for killing him to take his research. I like this direction, it ties Peter in with Norman even more so, making that dynamic all the more interesting.

I am getting very excited for this film. I was cautiously optimistic about the first one, and really enjoyed it. The movie definitely had a few blemishes, but as a whole it was great. And now that we are past the origin story business, we can get into what makes Spider-Man tick as a character. In the Raimi movies, which I still love two thirds of, Spider-Man doesn’t spend a lot of time in costume being Spider-Man. My favorite of the three (Spider-Man 2), he has denounced being a hero and spends the majority of the movie as Peter Parker. Don’t get me wrong, that is part of why I love it so much, but I want more wise cracking cocky Spider-Man.

I think this film will deliver. What do you think?

TRAILER: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Sony Pictures released a new trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” this morning, and it is quite different from the leaked trailer we posted a few days ago. After a thorough watch it does seem as if they’re moving us into a Sinister Six story line. Thus far we see Rhino and Electro, Doctor Octopus’ arms are shown next to The Vulture’s wings, a flash of the Goblins face early on, and the giant bauble rising near the end could be Mysterio’s suit. It’s also worth noting that the warehouse moment has six doors, two of which reveal Vulture and Doc Oc. We will of course have to be open minded about the members if those are the six they are using, or it is possible that we are only seeing part of the group and the others will be brought in later. Hollywood always stays 100% true to the source material don’t they? May 2, 2014 brings us the first comic movie for next year, are you on board?

Here are some screen caps of what seems to be the Sinister Six members.

The Rhino

The Green Goblin

The Vulture and Doctor Octopus

Mysterio ( Editor note: or as those in the comments and on twitter are saying maybe it’s the back of Electro’s head? Dude has a very round head)

Electro

And finally Electro. It looks like the movie is doing their own version of the Sinister Six instead of any of the many established comic versions, but oh well.

MOVIES: New Photos from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”

Spider-Man vs Electro

The Spidey news just keeps coming. Today we bring you new photos from the sequel. The following images are from USA Today along with some interesting quotes from the director Marc Webb.

Electro

“We shot his exterior and then created a glowing light source that is buried deep within his core that exudes and generates electric light,” Webb says. “If you look at a cloud when a thunderstorm is coming and the lightning is within that cloud, we use that as a natural inspiration for the character.”

Spidey vs Electro

I think that Jamie Foxx looks awesome as Electro and can’t wait to see his acting talents bring some life into the villain. Electro has always been one of my favorite villains that Spidey fights so to see him on the bring screen is going to be like a dream come true for me.

The other pictures seem to be of Rhino’s escape. I’m interested to see how this will be done. In the comics without going into a ton of detail, Rhino is wearing an indestructable suit. He’s not the smartest villian but he’s strong. In a lot of comics/tv shows Spidey takes him out using some sort of electricity so there’s a pretty good chance this will happen in the movie…maybe.

Swinging

Rhino Escape

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters May 2nd. Stay tuned for more wall crawler news.

New Amazing Spider-Man photos

Earlier today this image was uploaded to “The Amazing Spider-Man” Facebook page. It looks like Rhino on the left, Goblin in the center with Electro on the right. While Electro is listed as the main villain according to IMDB Paul Giamatti will play Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn who we all know is The Green Goblin. There is some debate regarding if the wall crawler will be fighting multiple villains in this film or if they are simply taking a leaf out of Marvel Studios book and setting up a Sinister Six movie. Also fun SPOILER fact Stan Lee is listed as “Graduation Guest” on IMDB.

Spider-Man

What do you think will Spidey face multiple villains or will that happen in another movie?

UPDATE:

So the pic above doesn’t give us a great look at the Goblin but now thanks to geektyrant we have a closer look.

goblin

If you look at the face it appears The Goblin is Harry Osborn (played by Dane DeHaan) not Norman Osborn, Harry’s Dad. It’s a different look for the villain and it could either be bad or good. I’m holding my judgment until I see him in action.

What do you guys think of the new look? Also if you haven’t seen the leaked trailer make sure you check it out by clicking here.
