LGBT Representation in Comics

At Salt Lake Comic Con last week, I had the chance to sit on the “LGBTQ in Geekdom” panel and had a wonderful time. It was mainly a Q&A between the panelists and the audience, and to say that it was well received would be an understatement as it was a nearly full room. Seeing so many LGBT geeks and allies in the same room was really encouraging, especially in this reddest of states with a marriage amendment lawsuit currently waiting to see if it will hit the Supreme Court’s docket.

One of the first questions I answered had to do with how LGBT people are portrayed in comics, and my response drew the ire of one young woman in the front row. She took issue with the fact that I didn’t believe that comics (or any medium) need to meet a quota of LGBT characters. Instead, I said that their introduction or coming out should feel natural and not be forced just to have a “token gay” in the comic. Characters shouldn’t be turned gay just because people feel there needs to be greater representation. She adamantly disagreed, saying that there should be a 50/50 mix between straight and other sexually oriented characters, and how dare I suggest that people “turn” gay. I only had a brief time to respond to that question, but her statement has stuck with me and is something that should be addressed.

One of the biggest arguments against splitting characters equally is the simple fact that it doesn’t accurately reflect society. Depending on the study, the percentage of LGBT people ranges somewhere between three and ten percent. Gauging the sexuality of a population is difficult as it mainly relies on people’s volunteering the information about themselves. Since there are still a lot of people who aren’t out or don’t identify as gay or lesbian even if they have engaged in same-sex relations (this one time, at band camp), the result will hardly ever be accurate. If people want to be up in arms about how cultures are reflected in comics, they would do better to look at racial minority groups, as many of them are under represented in the medium. One could also easily look at how women are still depicted as sexual objects and not as the powerful people they are (Spider-Woman variant, anyone?).

There’s also the fact that requiring artists and creators to include an exact percentage of LGBT character  runs the risk of their just becoming a token character who is only there because they have to be, and not because they have anything useful or interesting to do. It becomes an argument of quality over quantity. Many writers work on multiple titles at a time and have a lot of work to do every month, so to cram more restrictions and rules on what they can and can’t do will end up with a lower quality product that no one will be happy with.

Token Gay

Hi, I’m the Token Gay, where do you need me?

As is always the case, if that happens, then the same fans who demanded the additions will be the first to bitch and complain about how fake and unrealistic the newly added characters are

Wouldn’t it be better to have a writer take a character, even an original one, and cast and mold them into something unique and interesting that actually gets people emotionally involved? Hulkling and Wiccan are perfect examples of gay characters done right, as is Northstar (his being shoved back in the closet in the 90s notwithstanding) because their sexual identities were baked into their character and not tacked on later.

Which leads me to the whole “turning people gay” thing.

Look, I’m in no way suggesting that people “turn” gay, lesbian, bi, trans, whatever. I can attest to the fact that when puberty hits and your sexual side turns on, you have absolutely no choice in what gender you’re attracted to. Aside from extreme right-wing nuts, almost no one subscribes to that lunacy anymore.

Which is why it’s almost insulting when creators arbitrarily do something like that and make a big deal about it a la DC and Alan Scott. DC decided to make a big deal about the fact that the original Green Lantern was going to come out as gay, and it just felt like pandering. I have absolutely no issue with the fact that the character was reimagined as gay, but the way that DC was just flouting it about and trying to make it some BIG deal made it incredibly stupid. “OOOOH, a classic DC character is coming out, guess who?” they taunted us. Well it sure as hell wasn’t going to be Superman, Batman or any of the ones that actually mattered because that might have hurt sales. Let’s take someone almost everyone had forgotten about, change his sexuality, and then sit back and act all smug like we had done something worthwhile. No you didn’t, DC, you just made yourselves look like asses.

Alan Scott

Thanks, DC, for making your gay characters come across as creepy

Sure, a straight character could come out, and if handled appropriately, that’s completely fine, but wouldn’t it be more fun and a lot more interesting to introduce a new LGBT character, let them take the reigns of a big-name hero(ine) like Cap, Thor or Wonder Woman, and then when the original takes their mantle back (as they always do), spin off that new person into a comic of their own and let them grow from there? If they were written the right way, then people are going to like them and want to see what they do next. As a bonus, it all happened naturally and organically — the way it should have.

Look, I agree with that young woman from Comic Con; I do want to see more LGBT representation in comics, but it needs to be done the right way. Forcing people to change or look at things differently rarely has a positive outcome, and it would definitely be the wrong thing to do in this situation. Ask anyone you know who used to be against LGBT rights and now supports them why they changed their minds, and they will almost unequivocally say that it was because a loved one came out to them. Faced with the reality that someone who is near and dear to them is struggling or being hurt based on their views of their innate sexuality is what made them change. Not telling them they were wrong, calling them a bigot or shunning them. No, it was through love.

The same will work in all of our forms of entertainment. Give people characters they love and identify with, even if they differ from them in a lot of ways, the public will ask for more. Look at “Scott Pilgrim vs the World”; that comic series (and movie) had wonderfully portrayed gay and bisexual characters that everyone loved mainly because the writer was smart enough to make their sexuality a part of what made them unique but wasn’t their only trait. No one wants to get invested in someone who is completely one-sided and boring; “Scott Pilgrim” celebrated their sexuality but made them more than just who they slept with, and this needs to be reflected in real life as well as fiction. If someone’s identity is completely wrapped up with who they’re banging, then they should probably step back and reexamine their life. Sex is great and who people have sex with is an important part of life, but it shouldn’t be the main focus.

Wallace Wells

There are tons of great LGBT characters across all the forms of entertainment, and more are being added on a daily basis. Instead of complaining that there aren’t enough, we in the community need to go out and support the good stuff that is out there. Buy good comics, watch great movies, check out the awesome TV shows that include these characters. The more notice and fanfare we help these things attract, the better chance we’ll get more and even better stuff in the future.

And no one will have to force others to include us in their stories — they’ll be excited and energized to throw us into the mix.

Scott Pilgrim Full-Color Hardcovers

Bryan Lee O’Malley may have originally intended the Scott Pilgrim series to be black and white to stick to the Manga Inspired style but he’s been convinced to release a new edition of each book over the next few years. Book One will come out in August followed by Book Two in October with another 2 books a year until 2014. CBR has an interview with O’Malley and it seems like these books are going to be amazing. The small bits of Pilgrim art and short stories he’s done in color were always great and seeing the entire world O’Malley created transfer over into color is going to make these books a must have for any fan of the series. Check out the press release and some images below and then set aside $25 bucks for August.

Official Press Release

This August, Oni Press and Bryan Lee O’Malley will be bringing the uber-popular Scott Pilgrim series back to store shelves, but this time as an ultra-swank, 6 X 9, full-color hardcover edition. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 reprints the Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life for the first time in full color. The digital coloring is by the Shuster Award-nominated artist Nathan Fairbairn, the colorist for Batman Incorporated and Swamp Thing, and the whole thing is capped with a new cover from O’Malley.

“Everybody loves Bryan’s black-and-white artwork,” series editor James Lucas Jones explained, “but after seeing the few color stories he did with Scott and the gang, it was hard to avoid imagining a ‘what if?’ scenario. Now those wild dreams have come true. And to have one of the best colorists in the industry at the helm, that just seals the deal.”

“It’s been eight years since the first Scott Pilgrim book was published,” Oni marketing director Cory Casoni added. “Since then, the series has seen over twenty first reprints of the original format, with over a million copies of the first volumes sold. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 takes the familiar story from the original Scott Pilgrim series and gives it a new look. Plus it includes previously unpublished extras and bonus materials making this mighty tome one that’s required reading for Scottaholics everywhere!”

Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 will be the first of six hardcover reprints to be published bi-annually. Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 2 is currently scheduled for an October 2012 release.

Each volume will be sized at 6” x 9”, making it bigger than the original versions, as well. “We’re upgrading the presentation in every way,” Jones said. “The traditional black-and-white versions will be there for those who still prefer that option, but now everyone can have a choice. One, the other, or both!”

Scheduled for a August 8th, 2012 publication date, Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, Volume 1 will retail for $24.99.

Scott Pilgrim DLC

If you’re a Scott Pilgrim fan and own an Xbox 360 or PS3 you probably bought the downloadable game and have been reminded how hair-pullingly hard the games from the 8-bit generation could be.

Good news: Not only will Knives Chau soon be a playable character, but “Average Joe” difficulty will be slightly less aggravating. With the DVD and Blu-ray release on November 9th (and you better be buying that), the new video game content will also be available. You can’t beat the entry price of $9.99 for the whole game and $1.99 for DLC that includes playable Knives Chau, a free-for-all battle arena and dodgeball mode.

The patch to ease up the difficulty, fix a few bugs and allow drop in/out local multiplayer will be free. There are still no plans for online multiplayer.

Vanity Fair Gives You Good Reason To See Scott Pilgrim

2 weeks after opening Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has made $21.6 million. Thats pretty damn low, especially since it cost $60 million to make and god knows how much to market. It’s one of the freshest and most original movies of the year and for some reason nobody is going to see it. For fucks sake a movie making fun of twilight beat it…thats just plain wrong. Take a look at this article from Vanity Fair and then go buy a damn ticket and see the movie. Here’s an excerpt from the article to get you thinking.

But really, the best reason to go see Scott Pilgrim is because it’s a good movie. It takes a stab at saying something honest in a new way, and has a lot of fun doing it. If you like that kind of thing, and would like to see more of it, please go and pay to see Scott Pilgrimright now. And if you don’t like it, I’ll forward you a really funny YouTube video about double rainbows. You can ROTFL. I’ll be at the theater.

UPDATED: Scott Pilgrim on Adult Swim

I’m sure there is a decent amount of people out there who have seen, or have heard about the movie and what is and is not in it. Taking six books and cramming them into a movie is hard so of course some stuff just doesnt make it in. Well Adult Swim got together with Bryan Lee O’Malley and Edgar Wright to take the high school flashback from book 2 and turn it into an animated short. Slashfilm has all the details and 2 clips, here’s a little bit from them and click here to check out the full story.

We were approached by Universal to do something cool around the release of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Being huge fans of the comic, and very excited about the film, we asked if we could produce an animated short in the style of the comic. The filmmakers and Bryan Lee O’Malley were into the idea, so we actually made it! Edgar Wright was kind enough to secure some of the talent from the film for us, so we have Michael Cera as Scott, Allison Pill as Kim, Mae Whitman as Lisa and Jason Schwartzman as Simon Lee doing voices in the short.

UPDATE: Scott Pilgrim vs the Animation airs Thursday August 12th in two parts between 12 and 12:30 am, inside commercial breaks on [adult swim]. It will also be available in full on adultswim.com, and on the [adult swim] and Scott Pilgrim FaceBook pages the day after it airs.

Scott Pilgrim Versus Comic Con

Thursday at Comic Con has somehow become Scott Pilgrim Day. The awesome individuals responsible for the upcoming Scott Pilgrim Versus the World feature have been kind enough to host a daily party at the Hilton Gaslamp across the street from San Diego Comic Con. The party is all kinds of awesome. You get to make your own custom Scott Pilgrim t-shirt (and we’re talking professional screen printed stuff – not that iron on bullshit), your own flip book starring yourself doing kung fu and play the new Scott Pilgrim UbiSoft video game coming to Playstation Network and XBox Live. The game itself is a wonderful throwback to smash and bash classics such as Streets of Rage, only this is nerds fight hipsters and groupies. It’s basically a geek’s wet dream, going around smashing in the faces of those oh, too cool scenesters and hipsters us comics readers and gamers have to deal with on a day to day basis. To top it off, cast and crew members are making rounds doing signings and taking pictures and giving out free, delicious Garlic Bread to munch on.

This is the 8th Comic Con I’ve attended and have found that this is by far the coolest, most hyped up without being inflated party for a comic movie and for well deserved material. I was able to attend the Scott Pilgrim panel and it rocked. With 13 cast members in attendance, Michael Cera wearing a Captain America costume (in honor of the missing Chris Evans who is currently filming The First Avenger), fans were greeted by a surprise appearance from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, and Edgar Wright even called out Sly Stallone for an arm wrestling contest. It goes without saying that, Scott Pilgrim Versus the World really has been the perfect way to kick off Comic Con for this decade. The filmmakers and comic creator is tangible, the source material has just wrapped up in the most perfect way and the fans got a taste of what will be a faithful and awesome film with one killer soundtrack.

If you’re at Comic Con this year, the Scott Pilgrim party at the Hilton is a must. It’s going on from noon to 6:00 PM every day, but get in line early, the wait will surely be a bitch (but well worth the wait) and the free shirts are sweet. There’s also some preview screenings at The Balboa Theater tomorrow and Saturday, so if you get the chance to see it, do, Swank said that the movie lives up to it’s epic epicness.

Scott Pilgrim International Trailer

Here is the newest Scott Pilgrim Trailer, and like Budgetron said on his FB page this one seems to give the best feel for the book so far. The other trailers have been great but I think that this one just helps bridge the gap between book and film. So here ya go, enjoy.

Meet the Seven Evil Exes From Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World!

About 3 months ago, Budgetron (aka Derek Hunter) was kind enough to lend me all the volumes in the Scott Pilgrim series (that have been released) and I instantly fell in love with the story, the world, and the characters. Since that time, I have been obsessed with the movie treatment, hoping like all of you who have been fans much longer than I that Edgar Wright knocks it out of the park (but come on, is anyone doubting him that much from what we’ve seen in the trailers and TV Spots?). August just seems so far away, so until then, any new trailers, clips, posters, etc. that are released are like heroin to me…

Anywho… the fine folks at JoBlo have posted some pretty groovy character posters featuring Ramona Flowers’ evil ex-boyfriends! You can check out two of them below then shoot on over to JoBlo to check out the other four!

And, I know Derek, you want your comics back… you’ll have them back soon!

TV SPOT: Scott Pilgrim

As if there wasn’t enough news yesterday, he’s a fresh new look with some slightly new bits of footage from the upcoming Scott Pilgrim movie.
