SUPERMAN SECRET ORIGIN #1 (OF 6)

 smso

Written by Geoff Johns; Art by Gary Frank and Jon Sibal; Covers by Gary Frank

Superman Secret Origin is the third “official” retelling/ retcon of the origin of the Man of Steel post Crisis on Infinite Earths, to some this may seem redundant, but it’s the first “Origin” story that focuses on Clark Kent years of discovery and the difficulties of growing up while learning about himself.

Out of all the versions of Clark Kent’s formative years, Secret Origin is the absolute best! Tough I’ve been partial of Mark Waid’s “Superman Birthright”, due to it’s inclusion of going back to the original “origin” over John Byrne’s “Man of Steel” reboot. Unlike Birthright however, Johns’ focuses on young Clark, making the character’s story a coming of age that’s easily relatable, as Johns excels at writing characters both believable and relatable.

Not to say there’s anything wrong with MOS, Birthright, or any other retelling of the Superman origin story, but Secret Origin goes directly into the development of Clark Kent as he struggles to understand his own self. As many debate the thousands of characters in the comic worlds as to whether the costume or the “secret ID” is truly the person, the story lets Clark shine as it should. Despite being from Krypton, being able to fly, and all the other things that make up Superman, the most important part of the character is Clark Kent, it’s who he is!

Superman would not be superman without Clark Kent, without the loving family who raised him, friends, and lessons he learned growing up in Smallville, Kansas, Kal El of Krypton would not have the nobility and selfless nature that makes Superman great.

The story starts with a young Clark staring off to the sun with a single page intro with the words “Why are you here?”, within the story a question in regards to the kids playing football including best friend Pete Ross. While having context within the story, it also doubles as a deeper question setting up the story as Clark begins his journey of self discovery.

As Clark catches the ball and thrills to the excitement of inclusion (beautifully mastered through he art of Gary Frank, who has some of the best, most expressive story telling ability in the realm of comic artists), he unfortunately manages to break Pete’s arm when he tries to tackle Clark. What’s great is the fact Clark knows something strange is going on with himself (as later evidenced in the story) and feels terrible and dumps guilt upon himself for the accident, despite his growing strength, it could have easily happened to two normal kids without either of them having super-powers.

After the arrival of an ambulance and Clark’s father, John Kent, the ride home is portrayed as mostly silent with the exception of John questioning Clark’s “fabrication” regarding him telling his father he was going to the library. John does not press the issue as he can not only see how much guilt and suffering his adoptive son is going through, but also as not knowing what to do as their family dynamic is not normal as to be evidenced later (though I’m sure you know why already).

As the story progressed along with Clark’s abilities, his past and genetic parents are revealed when John decides that Clark needs to know, much to Martha’s dismay as it will change everything. While at first as the Kents’ reveal the rocket that they found Clark in becomes a discovery of elation to him, it soon turns to revulsion and horror as Jor El and Lara reveal themselves. Through the recordings upon the ship, the long dead parents tell the familiar tale of the last days of Krypton. In a first, the story is woven in to the story as natural exposition, complementing the story rather than starting it. Clark runs off crying into the night after these revelations only wanting to be “Clark Kent”, son of John and Martha.

The story perfectly takes the backdrop of Clark’s early teens (a strange time for any teenager) and uses it as a double whammy as Clark begins dealing with his emerging powers. That along with the introduction of those in his life during those difficult years (including an early meeting with Lex Luthor) makes the first book of the series a strong story and introduction to the boy who will become Superman. My favorite part of the book being the final page introducing the introduction of the union-super suit we all know and love along with Clark’s embarrassed reaction to it.

Superman Secret Origin is possibly the most perfect Superman story introducing the character in a difficult time in his life. With all the previous history, it’s fresh and important and less of a retread. As a matter of fact, it’s just damn wonderful to read, and possibly the greatest origin for comics’ greatest hero!

PREVIEW: Batman #692

 bm692_1

Little is known about what’s going on that far ahead in the Bat-universe, but Tony Daniel has been kind enough to share an early look at  his pencils of the Dark Knight.

I think Tony Daniel has done some of the best looking Batman stuff in a while and I’m excited to see this.  Issue #692 hits stands in October 28th, 2009.  The official synopsis is as follows:

With Batman pounding the pavement in search of Black Mask, Penguin on the run, and the completion of the new Arkham Asylum looming close, Gotham City has reached a boiling point! Guest-starring Catwoman and the Huntress and featuring the return of Gotham City’s most notorious crime family!

Be sure to talk to your local retailer about adding this to your pull list!

PREVIEW: Power Girl #5

PGL Cv5 dsDC has been kind enough to give us a look at Power Girl #5 by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Conner.   This issue hits stands on September 23rd, which is this coming Wednesday.

It’s good looking stuff, but, to be honest, I didn’t even know there was a Power Girl book.

But now I do, and now it looks like I’ll be taking an even closer look.  But can I ask one question?  There have been like 5 different origins for Power Girl (she was Kryptonian, then she wasn’t, right?  I don’t even know) can somebody shed some light on that for me?

While you guys are figuring out what brought us Power Girl in current continuity, I’m going to take a gander at these pages:

DOOM PATROL #2

 dp2v5

Back on Oolong (the island, not the tea) Dusty debriefs president Veronica Cale (head of the mad scientists nation) on the mission in the previous issue. As Dusty explanesthat the project was only damaged, due to Amanda Beckett going all brundle-fly on DP’s asses and escaping. While Cale callously chastises Dusty for not and the DP for not killing her, Dusty retorts with the body count they just endured. Unfortunatly for her, Cale in not so many words establishes their moniker of “Doom Patrol” is their mission statement in not so many words, though she may as well call them “Suicide Squad” from what she expects.

And in the brief notation in Cale’s journal establishes “Chief” Niles caulder is still a bit of a dick. Though I’m sure this tidbit has more to do with a future development.

And that’s probably the most straight-laced part of the book, as DP’s briefed and thrust into negotiations with a black hole. Yes, a Black Hole! This is what comics are made for folks!

And we’re only three pages in.

As the bickering gets rolling, Cliff (AKA Robotman) questions the Chief’s authority as par usual, but not unwarranted as they’ve only had six hours downtime since the Bekkett fiasco. After crapping on the DCU team echelon starting with the Justice League and working his way down, in a pre-emptive manner as a matter of fact.

Over in Brandenburg, Germany (location of the Vulcan Supercollider and the sentient Black Hole) the doctor who called Niles for help converses with the strange anomaly. As the body of Project Director Karl Straus housing the black hole inquires as to why Dr. Waid Ackerman called Niles and the Doom Patrol rather than President Cale, he responds explaining that her abilities are rather limited in her position and capacity. Ackerman wholly unaware while his conversation continues, as his face twists away and becomes devoured by the Black Hole as it takes him over to gain a better understanding of him and his actions. As he leaves the office to stroll through the work area, the pull back reveals the project employees to all have the “extended benefits” of being a vessel for the Black Hole. Upon the entity requiring more info regarding “DP”, a quick search by the secretary/ Black Hole finds the “Omnipedia” entry rather lacking in general, not to mention the numerous “deleted” informational entries.

Back on Oolong, Rocky and Bumblebee (living in Rita’s room in a dollhouse, thanks to her accident in Infinite Crisis leaving her diminutive in stature) discus her failed marriage to Mal Duncan (AKA Vox, another “accident” survivor). With a quick change of subject pointing back to Rita, a quick scan by the Chief reveals that despite her protests, she’s not OK. Then again, would you after being exposed to mist that transforms you into an elastic giant, only to end up dying on a suicide mission and come back after being cloned from your skull, and to have it revealed that the accident that gave you powers was not accidental and was in fact your mad scientist leader behind it all?

As the DP lands (dropping from a helicopter) and encounters the Black Hole, the curious visitor eagerly greets them, quite surprised that their meeting does not include the usual slugfest hullabaloo so common to these meetings. While exchanging inquiries, as the Black Hole decides to “Take them to their leader”, the security detail cocks their guns and trains them on Larry, Cliff and Rita, as the being asks them to “Show me what you’ve got”. As Cliff Tossed Larry and Rita in the air to protect them from the seconds away barrage of bullets, the previously expected fight is on, merely for the Black Hole to study in brief.

I’m thoroughly impressed with Keith Giffen’s ability to pack story into the 20 pages within by adding in the running emails, journals, web pages and view-screens. While telling an ongoing story, he still manages to pack backstory and future hints in the issue making it more than worth the cover price. The remaining pages of the story really zoom back into that Doom Patrol territory that is the Doom Patrol through and through without being a retread. Giffen’s got DP and knows how the series and characters should progress, this is bar none the best DP book since the original and Morrison runs, a must for DP fans!

Game Review: WET

At first glance this game looked like another push to make gamers look like lonely perverts, (I’m looking at you Soul Calibur). But really its an attempt to make a 70’s grindhouse movie into a video game.
Bethesda’s WET, set’s you as Rubi, an angry, drunk, sword-swinging, gun toting, tattoo covered mercenery. And throws you right into action fighting an Asian gang to reclaim a mysterious metal case. Her health items are bottles of whisky, which she drinks and then blasts to pieces, and all combos are linked through an acrobatics system, whether wall running. Sliding on your knees, or doing impressive dive-flips, the game simulates the over the top action that you’d expect from a Quentin Tarantino movie.
The controls are sluggish, and fight you through the tutorials, and continue to do so until you unlock a few more pieces of the combo system. And that drove me nuts, sadly I couldn’t care less why Rubi was chasing the metal case, I just wanted to keep dicing up and blasting the Asian gang members to loud rock-a-billy tunes.

ABOVE: Rubi takes it to some gangfolk

After about 3 hours of play I found myself on chapter 6/12, which all things considered, is pretty good for a hack and slash game such as WET. During this portion I was falling from an airplane shooting the guards of a rare artifact as they fell after me, once they were dead I battled my way to a parachute tied to a door, that fell past a few seconds later. Once again over-the-top, heart-pounding action.
With its hip new approach to blending real-life, and cell shaded animation. Its edgy story, solid action, and great soundtrack, WET is definitely a new direction for Bethesda, and unlike the mistake Square Enix made trying to produce a 3rd person Devil May Cry Clone( Dirge of Cerberus), this is a solid adventure, worth the 49.99.

Game Review : Need for Speed Shift

Where do I begin? I don’t race, as Mitch Hedberg so eloquently puts it, if my car won’t start and the gas guage doesn’t say E, I’m screwed.  You can imagine I dont play many racers, and NFS Shift was one that I sat down to with a lot of doubts.

This game has idiot proofing which I need, and I liked. The first thing you do in your career, is  a “practice lap” aka can this idiot drive lap. And after physically destroying the loaner BMW they gave me, all of my settings were put to retard.. I mean easy. I’m not sure if I crashed more because the cars looked so good that I got distracted, or because the different engines passing me kept surprising me. Every car that passed me that was a different make and model sounded completely different. After an hour of racing I received an invite to the Lotus Elise test event… Sadly the girlfriend stole the controller and did the race for me, giving me time to admire the car, and the fact that it sounded just like the damned Elise that passes me every day when I’m headed to work. EA and Slightly Mad Studios have the aesthetics down to a T.

Lotus Elise In Game

The story was simple enough, get to the giant race at the end and win. I can do that, I can try for that, and the experience system tied into the trophy/achievement system made the game very interesting. I was following a minimalist story with no character to care about, yet I still felt compelled to win each race and increase my agression and precision scores to gain that driver level.
Now aesthetics and drive aside, NFS Shift still felt like every other racing game, and Need For Speed game for that matter, that I’d every played. Nothing really set it apart in my head from any other game. Visually it was stunning, Audibly it was fantastic, ( minus a lack of soundtrack) and it dumbed itself down so that an idiot like me could play. Unfortunately after that had passed, I was still just driving in circles at an incredibly fast rate. And trying to gain points for doing cool stuff, so their motto was definitely if it’s not broke don’t fix it, just add to it, and give it a high replay value. And I gotta say they succeeded.
