PREVIEW: Clone Wars 2.17 “Bounty Hunters”

Lucasfilm was kind enough once again to give us another clip from Clone Wars.  This comes from Friday’s “Seven Samurai” homage “Bounty Hunters”.

From the press release:

In a rural and remote corner of Felucia, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka form an uneasy alliance with four deadly bounty hunters to protect a local village from Hondo Ohnaka and his band of pirates. But Hondo – always the opportunist and never willing to play fair – has plans of his own in “Bounty Hunters,” an all-new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, April 2 on Cartoon Network.

Though he may be unprincipled, corrupt, self-serving and deceitful, Hondo represents a return to classic Star Wars archetypes – including rogues and scoundrels such as Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. These intergalactic icons forged their reputations – within that galaxy far, far away as well as among fans – by playing by their own rules and distorting perceptions of right and wrong.

“People want to be seduced. People like a rascal. People like pirates…sort of, as long as they’re not totally pillaging and wreaking havoc,” says Jim Cummings, the voice of Hondo in The Clone Wars. “There’s a certain fascination we have with these bad guys – bikers, pirates, scoundrels, all the Robin Hoods of the world. And Hondo’s so much fun; I really dig him. He’s not a master villain, but he won’t be growing a halo anytime soon, either. The lovable rogue, the lovable rascal. You don’t mind inviting him over for dinner, but you’d better count the silverware after he leaves.”

Though he tends to cause problems for the Jedi Knights and the heroes of the Republic, Hondo is nonetheless a relatively sympathetic baddie – despite his penchant for double-crossing, cheating, back-stabbing and outright wickedness. Besides, that’s all just part of his charm.

“Hondo’s P.T. Barnum. He’s got a little Charles Bronson in him. He’s Harry Mudd, always glad-handing – and the next thing you know, you’ve lost your watch.  He’s a conjurer and a maneuverer, and he gets the job done. If he has to a do a little heavy lifting now and then, so be it – but rather than go the way of the bicep, he prefers to develop a little craft. At the end of the day, when everyone counts their stacks, his will be a little bigger than yours – and you won’t even know how it happened. He’s an opportunist, but if there’s a nickel holding up a dime, he’ll move on. He weighs his results against the effort it takes to get them; if one outweighs the other…NEXT!”

Cummings – whose voice-acting credits run the gamut from Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger, too) to Robot Chicken and comic book superheroes – found himself reveling in the Clone Wars production process, which has allowed him to fully articulate, expand and embellish what might otherwise have remained a mere supporting role in the Star Wars galaxy.

“The process in Clone Wars is so great; I just love it. It’s unique, because there aren’t too many productions that put the whole cast in the room. It’s so rare. Sometimes there’s a production assistant, but they’re just reading the lines off the page – like a robot. But when you have other actors in the room and you’re really working it, you can bounce back and forth. It makes the process what it should be and what it is – which is a live, organic thing. If you can come up with something within the story, which contributes to the story, that’s always welcome. This is gumbo where everyone gets to put in an ingredient. Coming from the theater especially, coming from a million plays – well, it’d be tough to do Okalahoma standing on the stage alone. This is simply so much more rewarding.”

As for honing in on Hondo’s signature voice – that cool and confident combination of snake-oil salesman and hardened mercenary – Cummings looked to the icons of his childhood for inspiration.

“There are indistinct accents that are familiar, to an extent, but still sound foreign – like when Roman centurions have British accents in gladiator movies. It lets the audience know that this is an Other, and yet we can still identify. It’s relatable,” he says. “Coming up with Hondo’s voice, I looked to one guy who had always fascinated me: Yul Brynner. As a kid, I’d think, ‘Where the HECK is this guy from?’ But you could buy him as the King of Siam, or as a cowboy in The Magnificent Seven, or as a robot in Westworld. I don’t do a great impression of Yul Brynner – but if you do a bad impression of someone, it becomes a new voice, a new character. So I just poured a lot of sand on my bad Yul Brynner – for texture – and that’s Hondo. But I don’t try to think about it too much; I always say that instincts are the best-stincts.”

MOVIE TRAILERS! The Expendables!

Its finally here! Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables trailer!!!  The folks over at JoBlo.com have written most anything I can say about it (and probably a lot less “winded”)

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE!

I will sum up by saying this: THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT THIS TRAILER THAT DOESN’T LOOK AWESOME IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD! Stallone got everything good- and everything bad about action from the 80’s til now and put it into a movie… even if its the worst movie ever its still going to be the BEST movie, if you catch my drift!

MOVIE TRAILERS! A Nightmare On Elm Street

 NOES_Poster

I went and saw Repo Men last night and was treated to this little beauty of a trailer… and admittedly at first glance I was expecting to see a new Zombie/Survival horror film- and to my surprise (and everyone else in the audience) it was A Nightmare On Elm Street. MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THIS BEFORE READING ON!

Now- I am embarrassed to admit this, but since I had no idea what I was watching, and was mostly expectant of something else- when Freddy pops around the corner and swipes his hand at the beginning of the trailer- I jumped. I have never- ever- never- ever jumped at a trailer for a scary movie before. So, yes, I was immediately hooked.

The next thing I noticed and that really stuck out at me was everyone’s eyes: The casting was a good choice of “teenagers” who can look like they are bright eyed and bushy tailed, and then (with minimal make-up) look as if they haven’t slept… for… days… I got a sense that “the eyes are the window to the soul” is going to be a very prevalent thematic presence throughout the movie. (just look at the blond in the beginning and how they’ve over corrected her eyes to be SHINING blue until she falls asleep and sees Freddy, its quick edits, but you can see it)

Another thing I’m REALLY interested in is the “micro naps” addition to the film… “…you’re dreaming but don’t even know it… even if you’re awake”. This one line opens up the film to an entirely new realm of scary/unpredictability. I’d be lying if I said I wanted this remake to be a “true to form” remake of the original… I adore the original but I don’t want to see it again with a bigger budget… it has its own, Robert Englund charm, its hilarious and startling… but when it comes to dreams; I now want to see something truly terrifying… and if I have no idea when a character is going to be asleep or awake… then presumably I should have no idea what’s going to happen next. I especially can see Jackie Earle Haley taking Freddy Kreuger to the place I viewed him as a child- You know- back when your imagination took the humor of his snarky one liners and developed it into something so frightening you couldn’t sleep for months until one night it was so bad you had to force yourself to kill Freddy with a bazooka- and ever since that fateful night you could control your dreams… wait- where was I?

Oh yes- I know there are naysayers- I was one. But after this trailer- I’m going to give the movie a shot. At the very least it will be a good “jumper” and if we are lucky they decide to throw it into 3D.

Midnight screening with a bunch of excitable nerds, a date, a bag of popcorn and knifey fingers being stabbed at your face: priceless

p.s. there is one thing that truly bothered me about the trailer- you can’t tell as badly in the small version on their site- but on the big screen- the stretching wall scene from the original is VERY cartoonesque and yanked me straight out of the trailer. It seemed like everything else in the preview spoke to the effort being put into a honorable re-make- but then they got lazy for that scene. I hope its fixed, or at least stomach-able by the release in April.

TRAILER: New Futurama!

Here is the first promo teaser for the new season of Futurama starting up in June of 2010.

If you’re not excited about this, there must be something wrong with you. Futurama is by far and away the funniest show a geek could watch and love and with the original producers, writers, and voice cast back in action, this is the most excited I’ve been for television since the last episode of Clone Wars and Lost. Barring those, this is the most excited I’ve been period for a television show.

Barack Obama joins up…

 ggtease4_obama_72dpi

Now this is just getting ridiculous.

I understand where they’re going with this, and they’r jabbing Marvel quite accurately, but it’s wearing off and getting silly.

Also, on our first post, Jerk-bot asked me to point out that at least Marvel’s books have been on time, unlike Kirkman’s recently.  I love Kirkman, though, and the books he writes, so I’m willing to put up with the delay.

Having said all of that, I’d like to see Obama in a Guardians of the Globe book.  Hell, he’s pretty much been in Siege…

Invincible Joins Up…

ggtease1_inv_72dpiIn what is perhaps the greatest parody marketing image I’ve seen this year, Image Comics announced today that it seems Mark Grayson will be joining up with the Guardians of the Globe in an August issue of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible.

For those of us who read the book on a regular basis, this comes as somewhat of a surprise, seeing how Mark left the entire government operation in recent issues.

This could be a great storyline coming up…

…or they could just be teasing us to tease Marvel for their oddly put together campaign.  In either case, I’m planning on reading Invincible no matter what and you should, too.

You can (and should) catch up on Invincible.  Get it from your local comics shop or order them here on Amazon.

Pixelbot’s Anime Update: Cross-dressing and Censorship edition!

Arata Vol. 1 Copyright VIZ Media

Arata Vol. 1 Copyright VIZ Media

Let’s start off this update with something for the ladies with the newly released Shojo manga, “Arata: The Legend”. Shojo, for those who don’t know, are manga specifically geared towards women, so you can expect plenty of pretty girly-men and romance throughout. VIZ has been kind enough to summarize the plot for us, here:

In a world where humans and gods coexist, Arata is the unfortunate successor to the matriarchal Hime Clan–unfortunate because if he’s not cross-dressing to hide his gender one minute, he’s fleeing for his life the next! When Arata winds up in the modern world and switches places with a boy named Arata Hinohara, it’s a wonder which Arata is actually better off…
In Volume 1, Hinohara is the spitting image of Arata, so he suddenly finds himself fighting people after his life! As he navigates through this foreign world filled with power-hungry warriors, who will come to his aid? One thing’s for sure–it’s not easy being Arata!

Yes, that’s right. It seems to be a cross-dressing take on “The Prince and the Pauper” where the male Arata is forced to dress as a woman to keep his position in line as the clan’s next matriarchal ruler. Expect plenty of shenanigans as a result, and a fair share of  Yoai undertones in this teen manga.

Next up, the very hot-button issue surrounding “Dance in the Vampire Bund” and Funimation. For those not familiar with this, basically Funimation acquired the rights to show Bund and announced they would censor said anime for some more questionable content. Of course, there was a huge backlash against this decision, and Funimation was bombarded with rage until yesterday they made the announcement that while the stream would still be censored, DVD and Blu-ray releases should be able to remain uncensored unless the last episode of the series really cross taste borders. (Source: Anime News Network)

So there is a ton of issues on both sides of the fence. On one side, censoring is bad, and really shouldn’t exist with private DVDs for home use. On the other hand is Bund, which is pretty intense. The main character pictured here. (Sorta NSFW), while being about seven-hundred years old, has a very young appearance. With scenes depicted of not so family-friendly behavior, this could further drive those people we’re trying to convince that anime is a valid, moving form of expression. It’s a tough debate, but at least we’re seeing some kind of compromise.

That’s it for this week, but don’t forget to leave your thoughts on censorship in the comments below.

Eva 2.0 and Summer Wars March Screening in Dublin

 RoE20Poster
This seems to be the time for big anime news around the world. From the always great source Anime News Network, we get info on the screenings of several choice anime names in Dublin:

The Irish Film Institute in Dublin will be screening Hideaki Anno and Khara’s Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) movie and Mamoru Hosoda and MADHOUSE’s Summer Wars movie during a two-day festival next month. Evangelion: 2.0 will run on March 20, and Summer Wars will run on March 21.

Other films to be shown at the festival include Anno and Khara’s Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Jo), Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second, Hosoda and MADHOUSE’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Production I.G’s Blood: The Last Vampire. Blood: The Last Vampire will share a double-billing with a “mystery film.” Jonathan Clements (author of Schoolgirl Milky Crisis and co-author of The Anime Encyclopedia) and industry guests Hugh David and Andrew Partridge will host a panel on the future of anime during the festival.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance is the second film in the theatrical film remake of Anno and Gainax’s Neon Genesis Evangelion television
anime series. The film continues the story of a group of 14-year-olds entrusted with giant biomechanical units to protect Earth from mysterious Angels. It opened in Japan in June 2009. It then ran in Spain’s Sitges, Scotland’s Glasgow
Film Festival, Canada’s Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema, and France’s Lyon Asian Film Festival. Funimation had released versions of the first film, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, in North America in 2009 in theaters and on home video.

The light-hearted “action entertainment” story of Summer Wars revolves around a modern-day family on a midsummer adventure. The project reunites many of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’s staffers, including scriptwriter Satoko Okudera (Angel, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Miyori no Mori) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, FLCL). The film opened in Japan on August 1, 2009, and has since been scheduled in Spain’s Sitges, England’s Leeds Film Festival, Germany’s Berlin International Film Festival, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and in the New York International Children’s Film Festival.

Iron Man 2 Behind the Scenes

The Heatvision Blog over at The Hollwood Reporter turned us on to this Behind the Scenes video from Iron Man 2.

You can watch it here.

It looks cool and it’s a nice look at the introduction of whiplash, but the Heatvision guys are right, it would have been nice to get more substance instead of Robert Downey, Jr and Scarlett Johannson saying really bland and generic things.

The Heroic Age Avengers

avengersCaptain America, Iron Man, Thor were a given.  But it’s nice to see that Wolverine and Spider-Man made the cut.  Taking into account the fact that John Romita, Jr. is drawing it, Spider-Man should have been pretty obvious to me.

I think this is a great line-up and I can’t wait to see how these guys pull together in the post-Siege Marvel world.  I hope all of this heroic age stuff doesn’t get boring…

Now when are we going to get a look at the Secret Avengers?
