Comic-Con Teaser: ‘The Goon’

MTV has revealed the tease “trailer” for footage that will be shown at Comic-Con!

Movie TrailersMovies Blog

Based on the cult comic from Dark Horse Entertainment, created by Eric Powell in 1999, the comic follows the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The stories have a paranormal and comedic edge to them and concern ghosts, zombies, mad scientists and “skunk apes.”

My exposure to “The Goon” is pretty limited, but from this clip the animation looks amazing to me. They really captured the artistic style of the comic, but I’ll leave it up to you Goon fans to debate with the “feel” of the comic is there in this short teaser!

The screenplay for ‘The Goon’ is by Eric Powell and stars the voice of Paul Giamatti as Frankie. No release date has been set.

New Harry Potter Poster

I think this poster for the last Harry Potter film is a pretty striking image.  It reminds me quite a bit of what I wanted the scouring of the Shire to look like in the Lord of the Rings, but alas, we were never able to see that put on film.

A Blue Beetle Live Action TV Series?

Editor’s Note: The following report is the first article from Moxiebot, whom we hope will become a staple to readers of Big Shiny Robot!  She’s one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met when it comes to the DCU and comics in general and is probably nerdier than I am, though undoubtedly much, much more attractive.

So, without further ado, we are proud to present her first report:

Between the hype surrounding the inevitable return of Bruce Wayne and the new Aqualad, a beacon of hope for the dedicated fans of DC’s greatest underdog has emerged — and it looks like their dedication might be paying off in the biggest way since Infinite Crisis.

Images from a recent live-action test of Jaime Reyes AKA Blue Beetle III’s super-powered symbiont have been posted by DC, and reception has been surprisingly enthusiastic. Reyes was introduced to the public in February of 2006 as the recently deceased Blue Beetle II/Ted Kord’s teenaged predecessor. While initial reactions were wary due to Ted Kord’s nearly fifty years as Blue Beetle, artist Cully Hamner paired with writers Keith Giffen and John Rogers proved that the unwilling, awkward, bumbling Reyes was a strong fit for the name. Blue Beetle’s monthly series ran out of steam early last year, but Jaime hasn’t wanted for work — his recent appearances include issues of Teen Titans and Booster Gold.

We’ve been told straight from the source that the full clip will be showing at the San Diego Comic-Con this year as often as they can manage to squeeze it in. While this doesn’t mean anything conclusive or solid — they’ve been very careful to emphasize that it’s not green-lit, or even a final design — the fact that DC is pouring resources in to Blue Beetle can only mean more action on the horizon for those of us with perpetual Beetle Mania.

Ted Kord is probably somewhere in heaven thinking that this is more than enough payoff for his work in Watchmen.

Have a look at a few choice captures below, and then head over the DCUblog for the rest:

Meet the Seven Evil Exes From Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World!

About 3 months ago, Budgetron (aka Derek Hunter) was kind enough to lend me all the volumes in the Scott Pilgrim series (that have been released) and I instantly fell in love with the story, the world, and the characters. Since that time, I have been obsessed with the movie treatment, hoping like all of you who have been fans much longer than I that Edgar Wright knocks it out of the park (but come on, is anyone doubting him that much from what we’ve seen in the trailers and TV Spots?). August just seems so far away, so until then, any new trailers, clips, posters, etc. that are released are like heroin to me…

Anywho… the fine folks at JoBlo have posted some pretty groovy character posters featuring Ramona Flowers’ evil ex-boyfriends! You can check out two of them below then shoot on over to JoBlo to check out the other four!

And, I know Derek, you want your comics back… you’ll have them back soon!

ET! Visits the Set of Thor

 odin
In this not very revealing visit of the set of Thor, Entertainment Tonight proves that it’s easy for them to not be in on the joke.

There isn’t a whole lot of new anything in this piece (though we do get a glimpse of Odin!) and the interviewer asks the most banal questions in the whole galaxy.

I’m still incredibly excited for this movie, even though it’s ridiculously obvious that Entertainment Tonight doesn’t get it at all. Why do these people have access to the set and get to reveal stuff like this? They should at least have the decency to hire someone who knows what they’re doing, or has a rapport with the actors.

This is also the first I’ve seen of Natalie Portman in the role and Kenneth Branagh talking about it on video.  But again the ET! interviewer and editor picks out the lamest quotes possible.

WALKING DEAD: First Production Still

AMC has released the first production still from the set of The Walking Dead which began filming this month in Atlanta.

From the press release:

Of the formation of these zombies, creator, director, and executive producer Frank Darabont says “Greg Nicotero is absolutely out-doing himself. The work he is doing is beyond what one could hope for. Our Zombies kick ass!”

“The Walking Dead” will premiere on AMC in October 2010 during Fearfest.

It’s pretty sweet.  I’m very happy about this.

INTERVIEW: Joshua Dysart talks Greendale

You can listen to the full interview with Joshua Dysart on our iTunes feed here.  Make sure you rate and subscribe to the feed.  (We’ve got lots of cool interviews coming up!)

The following first appeared on Huffington Post, where you can go to see the rest of the pages.

Neil Young has spent the better part of five decades becoming a living legend in the world of music and during all of that time he’s never been a stranger to shining a light on political causes and exploring new mediums. He’s directed films, put on benefits like Farm Aid, and established non-profit organizations. Next week, with the help of DC Comics, he will broach the world of comic books with the new release Greendale.

Vertigo, the more literary imprint of DC Comics, tapped Joshua Dysart to work with Young to adapt the story. Dysart is an old hand at mixing the entertaining memes of comics with the conceits of political undertones that leave you feeling good about the book and not as though you’ve been preached to. He was the mastermind responsible for Vertigo’s relaunch of The Unknown Soldier, which I’ve written about for Huffington Post previously.

Dysart and I spoke recently to talk about the project: “Originally, Greendale was a bit of a rock opera in that the songs were loosely related to the Green family who lived in this fictional Northern California town of Greendale. And they’re all very much grounded in activism and it’s all very much Neil’s frustration and anger over choices the Bush Administration was making in 2003 regarding our energy policy in particular. It’s an activist album. He went on to direct a film by himself, which was sort of an accumulation of music videos, and a rock opera, and they put out an art book. And all of these further illuminated the narrative of Greendale. So when it came time for us to attack it, we sort of felt like the narrative had been wrung out from that angle, so we wanted to do something different, but firmly entrenched in the Greendale mythos. We got into the mystical aspect of the women of the Green family. And so what we tried to do was to tell a story that both had human elements that Neil Young had, but really use comics to their great strength.”

And they very much did. The comic is an incredibly engaging look at Sun Green, a young girl in the Green family at the onset of her mystical powers. Between this super-natural awakening and her overriding outrage for environmental issues, Sun is left to deal with too much. But even more is piled when a mysterious Stranger blows into town, causing trouble. Sun is left to unlock the secrets of her family, focus her outrage, and find herself, before she’s able to face off against the Stranger.

As a writer, Dysart, under Young’s guidance, was able to straddle that balance between literature and political speech without ever crossing a line that would make it seem trite or forceful. His masterful words are accompanied by Cliff Chiang’s artwork. The imagery is top notch and the subdued colors by Dave Stewart lend the book an ethereal quality you’ll want to read again and again.

Presented below are 13 pages for your viewing pleasure. I would recommend you pick the book up. If you’re a fan of Neil Young or comic books, you won’t be disappointed. It hits book stores June 15, 2010.

Bryan Young is the editor of Big Shiny Robot!, a comic book news site. You can listen to the full interview with Joshua Dysart there.

Thor Concept Art and Costume Revealed

So, more concept from the Marvel movies has been leaked, this time images of Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Collider has the full story and more pictures than the one below.  I’m a little worried about this.  Not the costume itself, I think it’ll look great, but these concept pieces (like the one of Captain America yesterday) look a little silly and wonky.  It’s not because their bad, it’s just the art style and the odd photoshop job done to put the actors in the suits.  Is this really the best first look of these characters we want?

I really don’t think so.  And I think some people might start to get the wrong impression about these movies far too much in advance.

Also, why doesn’t Cap have wings on his helmet?

In any  case, here’s Thor.  It looks good, but I hope the style of this doesn’t turn anyone off of the movie.
