PREVIEW: Hot Toys Captain America

Under the umbrella of “expensive shit I must own”, Hot Toys FaceBook fan page released these images of their upcoming figure, Captain America: The First Avenger. Just like his Avenger counter parts, he will be 1/6 scale and most likely priced between $150 and $250. Preorder should be any day now, and I’d imagine they will ship in July or August, just after the movie drops. Enough talk, more pictures:

PREVIEW: Death of Ultimate Spider-Man

Tomorrow our favorite web head will meet his untimely demise… supposedly. It certainly seems as though he’ll die, but until I see it in print I don’t know that I believe they’ll murder their cash cow. Marvel sent over this press release:

THE  “ULTIMATE” SUPER HERO DEATH

Peter Parker Dies In Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #160 In Stores Wednesday

New York, NY—June 21, 2011— PETER PARKER HAS SPUN HIS LAST WEB.  In the storyline that has garnered the attention of fans and media worldwide, Marvel revealed that Peter Parker meets his tragic end in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #160, hitting stores tomorrow (Wednesday, June 22nd). Concluding the critically-acclaimed, sold-out “Death of Spider-Man” story arc, the death of Peter Parker signals a major change for the Ultimate Comics Universe and sets the stage for the upcoming debut of an all-new Spider-Man.

“10 years ago, Brian Bendis and Mark Millar changed the way people saw super heroes with the birth of the Ultimate Universe. With ‘Death of Spider-Man’ the two have done it again, creating a story just as big, and something that would really resonate with fans.” said Mark Paniccia, Marvel Senior Editor.  “But Peter’s death doesn’t signal the end of their larger plan—it’s the start of one of the most ambitious stories you’ve ever read in comics.”

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 debuted in 2000 and is widely considered one of the most important comics of the century. The progenitor of the Ultimate Comics Universe, in which Marvel’s greatest characters and stories were reinterpreted for modern audiences, Ultimate Spider-Man set records for trade paperback sales and its version of Spider-Man remains one of the most popular of all-time.

“We’ve never seen a world without Spider-Man, a world without Peter Parker, so his death is a significant event for the Ultimate Comics Universe and we’re going to see how quickly it changes everything. Readers are in for something very new…and surprising because everything that happens in Ultimate Spider-Man #160 and Ultimate Comics Fallout sets the stage for even bigger stories,” explained Axel Alonso, Marvel Entertainment Editor In Chief.

The story continues in July’s Ultimate Comics Fallout, picking up right after the death of Spider-Man and showing just what happens to the world without Peter Parker. New alliances! New enemies! Fans can’t afford to miss the dynamic debut of the new Spider-Man in the pages of Ultimate Comics Fallout—and you won’t believe who’s under the mask!

Like most Marvel fans, I’ll be picking up my issue tomorrow to see just how this all goes down. After the last issue, the deck is certainly stacked against Spider-Man.

Archie Comics Solicitations for September, 2011!

Once again, the fine people at Archie have given us a look at the products they have in store for September! The monthly books don’t contain any surprises, aside from Archie’s 625th issue not having any real details available. One wonders if anything special is in store for the book. Surely not a relaunch with a new #1 (I hope not, anyway)! Oh that left a bad taste in my mouth. To cleanse the pallet, the very nice looking Best of Archie Deluxe Hardcover looks especially nice. Unlike other hardcovers, this one seems to back up it’s slightly higher price tag with a truly beefy page count. Is there anything you’re looking forward to? Read on, you may find something to your liking!

FIRST LOOK: Spider-Man XXX Trailer (SFW)

With last year’s Batman XXX: A Porn Parody, it was proven that you can titillate and entertain, while being extremely faithful to source material. Since the success of that movie, there has been a veritable explosion (no pun intended) of Superhero porn parodies. Some have been better than others (not that I’d know), but with the upcoming Spider-Man XXX, hopes are high for another faithful adaptation due to the direction of Axel Braun, he who helmed last year’s Batman. The people at Vivid entertainment were kind enough to send along a rough cut of the opening credits and the official poster for the film. Electro aside, it’s pretty faithful to the Raimi movies.

Well, faithful in style, at least. I’m really surprised that they’d include the Black Widow and not the Black Cat. Well, if nothing else, Spider-Man will be sure to shoot a sticky substance from his body, and there’ll probably be some web-slinging too. What do you all think of Superhero porn? Is it sexy, or just silly?

Image Comics Brings Back The Cold War

COLD WAR IS COOL IN PIGS

McCool, Cosby & Tamura Set to Activate KGB Cuban Sleeper Cell in September

Berkeley, CA – 15 June 2011 – When the second generation of a loyal KGB sleeper cell is given the signal, they must finish the mission that they have been raised their entire lives to complete: overthrow The United States of America, no matter what it takes. Writers Ben McCool (CHOKER, MEMOIR) and Nate Cosby (Jim Henson’s Storyteller) are the creative minds behind this new ongoing series from Image Comics, a character-driven modern espionage thriller entitled PIGS.

The two co-creators enlisted the stylish and gritty storytelling talents of newcomer artist Breno Tamura to deftly handle interiors and an all-star cast to create cover art. Jock (The Losers), Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics) and Amanda Conner (THE PRO, Power Girl) have already turned out powerful images for the first three covers, and Ben Templesmith (CHOKER, FELL), Humberto Ramos (Crimson, Amazing Spiderman) and Becky Cloonan (Demo, American Virgin) have signed on to contribute cover art as well.

“PIGS is as much a study of these very unique characters as it is a fast-paced, action-packed story of espionage,” explained McCool. “Sure, the Pigs are terrorists, and their mission is set to leave a trail of devastation in their wake. But what if not every member of the group has the same agenda? Is it possible that there’s a sleeper within the sleeper cell…?”

“Our goal is to make the reader uncomfortable,” added Cosby. “The ‘heroes’ in PIGS are terrorists that’ve been trained their entire lives to annihilate your way of life and kill you if necessary. But at the same time, these characters have souls, unique personalities, senses of humor. The book is about the practical application of terrorism, and what it takes for a person to dedicate their life to destruction.”

The five young anti-heroes in PIGS are a band of communist operatives who intend to finish what the previous generation began after the Bay of Pigs invasion. While they may find themselves on the road to successfully completing their potentially catastrophic suicide mission, for the first time in their lives they have also come face-to-face with the reality of the country that they have been trained to hate. The characters of PIGS are human weapons who must decide how or if they can pull the trigger when their moment comes at last.

PIGS #1 (JUL110432), a 32-page full blown, full color espionage comic book for $2.99, is available to order in the July edition of Diamond Previews catalog, and will be at a comic store near you on September 14, 2011.

I love a good Cold War story. I read Tom Clancy and John Le’Carre novels growing up and studied Post-War Europe and Communism in college so I’m pretty intriuged by this book and really dig the idea of looking at things from agents point of view. Being raised in America and turning on them can’t be easy. We’ve had a taste of this kind of thing in books by Tom Clancy (Teeth Of The Tiger) and even Chuck Palahniuk (Pygmy) and just in countless video games this year we are having wars in America so its no surprise that a comic will be breaching this territory but I think it will be able to flesh out the story in a more interesting and detailed way. However, the “sleeper agent with sleeper cell” turns me off a little. Seems like a plot point over done a lot to me but it could turn out interestingly enough. Guess we will find out come September.

Image Comics for September, 2011!

While there is a veritable f—ton of books from Image Comics coming in September, I thought I’d point out a few that interest me. Cory Walker is returning to Invincible! Ryan Ottley has been on the book long enough that I consider the “world” of Invincible more his than Walker’s, but it’ll still be nice to see the original creative team back together. Also of note is a new book by Jay Faerber, who is a writer I always enjoy. You’ve got your Witchblade anniversary issue, as well. While I’m not into the character, I know there are plenty who are, so that’s for you. The new Robert Kirkman/Rob Liefeld book The Infinite is apparently available in regular and extra crispy deluxe editions. I won’t question that decision, because I know someone’s going to buy it. At any rate, take an hour or so to pore over this massive cache of comic craziness, and if you see anything you like, tell your friendly neighborhood comic shop to order them. And tell ‘im Shaz-Bot sent you!

In “Tow Wow,” Archie’s frustration with his car forces him to join the Motor Club. But Archie doesn’t get his car fixed! He just gets towed everywhere: school, home and even dates! Marvel was even nice enough to break their tradition and actually include captions and dialog this time around. It all adds up to me wanting to pick up a Daredevil book, and that has never happened before. If you dig it as much as me, get your LCS on the phone stat, and reserve a copy!

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Daredevil #1, from the creative dream team of Mark Waid, Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin! Daredevil’s exciting new journey begins as he retakes the alleys and rooftops of New York City with monumental life changes, new enemies, new friends and a new role in the Marvel Universe! Billy club in hand, Matt Murdock must tackle his greatest challenges yet, but will he be welcomed back to New York with open arms? Who will stand in his way and can Daredevil be trusted? Find out as Daredevil soars to new heights in the double-sized Daredevil#1, this July!

FIRST LOOK: Betty #192

Next week’s issue of Betty continues the spy antics of Betty & Veronica. These preview pages are enjoyable, and funny. What really intrigues me though is that if you read between the lines a little, you could easily see a bunch of mind-controlled toddlers as the ultimate killing machines. Maybe it’s just me. At any rate, enjoy the be-catsuited antics!

BETTY #192
“Spy Girls – Back in Action,” Part 2
The conclusion of a two-part spy crossover! Pranks and bad behavior are running wild in Riverdale! Agents Betty and Veronica soon discover the problems could be caused by coded messages hidden on the popular kids show Funtime USA! And the main culprit appears to be a lovable clown named Klutzy. Things look to get worse when Funtime USA makes a live stop in Riverdale! Continues from last month’s VERONICA #206.
