Preemptive Picks for Final Order Comics 4/20/15

Every Monday, your local comic book shop finalizes orders for comics that are about five weeks from publication. This is your last chance to guarantee a pre-ordered copy for these comics. Here are my preemptive picks for this week’s FOC items having not read any of them. You can see the complete list of final order comics from our friends at Death Ray Comics

HARROW COUNTY #1DARK HORSE COMICS
(W) Cullen Bunn (A/CA) Tyler Crook
On The Rack: 5/13/2015
MSRP: $3.99
Preview

Publisher Synopsis:
Emmy always knew that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and zombies. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures-and to the land itself-in a way she never imagined.

Don’t miss the first issue of this southern gothic fairy tale from the creator of smash hit The Sixth Gun, beautifully and hauntingly realized by B.P.R.D.’s Tyler Crook!

Preemptive Pick:
Cullen Bunn understands how to do creepy. In fact, his issue of “Creepy” #13, with art by Tyler Crook, is a great preview of how great this comic book is going to be. Do yourself a favor and pick up Bunn’s collected series “The Damned,” in anticipation for this new series from Dark Horse.

Put this comic on hold if you enjoy “B.P.R.D,” “Creepy,” and/or “Army of Darkness.”

INSUFFERABLE #1IDW PUBLISHING
(W) Mark Waid (A/CA) Peter Krause
On The Rack: 5/13/2015
MSRP: $3.99

Publisher Synopsis:
What happens when your crime-fighting sidekick grows up to be an arrogant, ungrateful douchebag who makes Kanye look humble? Worse, what on Earth could force the two of you together for one last case? Nocturnus and his former protege, Galahad, will find out-if they don’t kill one another first.

Preemptive Pick:
Fans of the comic series that turned the superhero genre upside down (“Irredeemable”) will NOT want to miss this comic book. The concept of this comic deals with the generational culture collusions that millennials are forcing upon everyone in the work force – so it only makes sense to have it reflected in the superhero comic book. If you haven’t read “Irredeemable,” go buy the first volume. Buy the time “Insufferable” #1 is on the rack, you will probably have consumed all 10 volumes.

Put this comic on hold you enjoy “Irredeemable,” “Incorruptible,” and/or “Kingdom Come.”

Wake TPWAKE TP (MR)
VERTIGO COMICS
(W) Scott Snyder (A/CA) Sean Murphy
On The Rack: 6/10/2015
MSRP: $17.99

Publisher Synopsis:
When marine biologist Lee Archer is approached by the Department of Homeland Security for help with a new threat, she declines but quickly learns they won’t take “no” for an answer. Soon she is plunging to the depths of the Arctic Circle to a secret, underwater oil rig filled with roughnecks and scientists on the brink of an incredible discovery. But when things go horribly wrong, this scientific safe haven will turn into a house of horrors at the bottom of the ocean!

Preemptive Pick:
Truthfully this shouldn’t count as a preemptive pick. I’ve read this whole series. In fact, I own the hardcover deluxe edition of the collected series. It’s written by the protégé Scott Synder (“Batman,” “American Vampire”) and drawn by rockstar artist Sean Murphy (“Joe The Barbarian,” “Punk Rock Jesus”). The reason this is a preemptive pick? You don’t want to be loaning your single-issues and/or hardcover out to people to read. And this is one of the best comics to loan to non-comic readers to get them on board with the medium.

Order this if you enjoy “American Vampire,” “Hellblazer,” and/or “Severed.”

MS MARVEL HCMS MARVEL HC VOL 01
MARVEL COMICS

(W) G. Willow Wilson (A) Adrian Alphona, Jake Wyatt (CA) Sara Pichelli
On The Rack: 8/5/2015
MSRP: $134.99

Publisher Synopsis:
Collecting MS. MARVEL (2014) #1-11 and material from ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE #1.

Marvel Comics presents the all-new Ms. Marvel, the groundbreaking heroine who’s become an international sensation! Kamala Khan is an ordinary girl from Jersey City – until she suddenly gains extraordinary gifts. But who is she now? Teenager? Muslim? Inhuman? Kamala explores her newfound powers, but will the weight of the legacy before her be too much? Encounters with the maniacal Inventor and the Inhumans’ royal family; team-ups with her favorite hero Wolverine and the Inhumans’ dog, Lockjaw… Kamala is living the dream. But as she discovers more about her past, her future is threatened! How long can Ms. Marvel’s life override Kamala’s? Experience the fan-favorite, critically acclaimed new series from the beginning!

Preemptive Pick:
This probably shouldn’t count as a preemptive pick either… But it’s so good! This truly is one of the best tights-and-capes comics of the past couple of years. Additionally, the collection of the complete first story arc, in an over-sized hardcover edition, this book is going to sell out before you can get your hands on it.

Put this on your hold if you enjoy “New Teen Titans,” “Captain Marvel,” or “Young Avengers.”

MANTLE #1 MANTLE #1 CVR A LEVEL (MR)
IMAGE COMICS
(W) Ed Brisson (A/CA) Brian Level
On The Rack: 5/13/2015
MSRP: $3.99
Preview

Publisher Synopsis:
Robbie never asked for any of this. While drunkenly walking home from a punk show, he’s hit with lightning and wakes to find that he’s been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he’s forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.

Preemptive Pick:
Those who are familiar with Ed Brisson’s work (“Sheltered,” “Sons of Anarchy”) probably feel like they are in on a secret. They get to follow amazing, yet gut/heart wrenching, stories that don’t carry nome de plumes like Morrison, Moore, or Brubaker. Now teaming up with mostly-unknown comic/tattoo artist Brian Level (“Quantum & Woody,” “Lazarus”), I have a feeling that this will be the title that pushes these creators’ names into the spotlight, a place where those familiar with their work have already had them.

Put this on your hold if you like “Sheltered,” “Lazarus,” and/or “Sons of Anarchy.”

P.S. I guess I better plan my trip to Kentucky for some permanent Level art on my arms. (Look up his work.)

Injection #1INJECTION #1 CVR A SHALVEY & BELLAIRE (MR)
IMAGE COMICS
(W) Warren Ellis (A/CA) Declan Shalvey, Jordie Bellaire
On The Rack: 5/13/2015
MSRP: $3.99
Preview

Publisher Synopsis:
Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life.

INJECTION is the new ongoing series created by the acclaimed creative team of Moon Knight. It is science fiction, tales of horror, strange crime fiction, techno-thriller, and ghost story all at the same time. A serialized sequence of graphic novels about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection.

Preemptive Pick:
Three of my favorite comic book creators on a creator-owned project? Yup. ‘Nuff said.

Put this on your hold if you enjoy “Moon Knight,” “Trees,” and/or “Transmetropolitan.”

Preemptive Picks for Comics with Final Order of 4/13/15

Every Monday, your local comic book shop finalizes orders for comics that are about five weeks from publication. This is your last chance to guarantee a pre-ordered copy for these comics. Ant-Man #5Ant-Man #5
Marvel Comics
(W)
Nick Spencer (A) Ramon Rosanas (CA) Mark Brooks
On The Rack: 5/6/2015
MSRP: $3.99

Publisher Synopsis:
The explosive first arc finale! There aren’t actually any explosions – but there IS a big showdown with our poorly lit villain, and plenty of heartbreak to go around. Nothing will be the same again! Except you’re still aging. That’s not going anywhere.

Preemptive Pick:
Yesterday, Marvel released an Ant-Man trailer teaser. Yes, that’s right, a prevue teasing a trailer. If you haven’t been reading Spencer’s “Ant-Man,” this teaser should get you excited for the trailer/movie, and then push you to read one of my favorite marvel titles right now.

Arcadia #1Arcadia #1
Boom! Studios
(W)
Alex Paknadel (A) Eric Scott Pfeiffer (CA) Matt Taylor
On The Rack:
5/6/2015
MSRP:
$3.99

Publisher Synopsis:
Our long tradition of breaking new talent-like Rafael Albuquerque (The Savage Brothers, American Vampire), Emma Rios (Hexed, Pretty Deadly), and Declan Shalvey (28 Days Later, Moon Knight)-continues with the debut of Alex Paknadel and Eric Scott Pfeiffer, two new creators whose extensive world-building in the sci-fi thriller Arcadia evokes comparisons to epics like Game of Thrones, The Matrix, and Astro City.

When 99% of humankind is wiped out by a pandemic, four billion people are “saved” by being digitized at the brink of death and uploaded into Arcadia, a utopian simulation in the cloud. But when Arcadia begins to rapidly deplete the energy resources upon which the handful of survivors in the real world (aka “The Meat”) depends, how long will The Meat be able-and willing-to help? Featuring the first of five connecting covers by Matt Taylor.

Preemptive Pick:
It sounds like “Outbreak” meets “The Matrix.” Sign me up. Boom! has a great history of stewarding new talent into the big arena of publishing. Let’s see if new meat, Paknadel and Pfeiffer, will make the cut.

Baltimore Cult of the Red King #1 (OF 5)Baltimore Cult of the Red King #1 (OF 5)
Dark Horse Comics
(W) Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden (A) Peter Bergting (CA) Ben Stenbeck
On The Rack: 5/6/2015
MSRP: $3.99

Publisher Synopsis:
The Red King is legendary. But is he the stuff of myth-or the ultimate adversary of the human race? In this series, Lord Baltimore discovers the truth about an ancient evil that threatens to destroy the world.
Click for a free PDF preview.

Preemptive Pick:
Another addition to the “Mignola-verse.” This is the sixth volume of the Lord Baltimore series that Mignola and Golden have crafted. This five issue mini-series has the exact same creative team as did “The Witch of Harju” (half of volume 5). If you’ve enjoyed the other “Baltimore” stories, there is no reason not to enjoy this series.

Dead Drop #1 (OF 4)Dead Drop #1 (OF 4)
Valiant Entertainment LLC
(W)
Ales Kot (A) Adam Gorham (CA) Raul Allen
On The Rack: 5/6/2015
MSRP: $3.99

Publisher Synopsis:
Four issues. Four stories. One ticking clock! Red-hot writer Ales Kot (Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier) and rising star Adam Gorham (Zero) start the countdown to DEAD DROP as an unlikely cast of superhuman operators fall in deep for an undercover conspiracy action thriller in the darkest corners of the Valiant Universe…

There is a secret black market in New York. It is hidden in plain sight – in our streets, trains, restaurants. Those who know how to  navigate it exchange secrets of extraordinary nature. But when the secret in circulation is a biological weapon derived from Vine technology, the gloves are off – and the most extraordinary agents are released to stop the disaster before it occurs. Otherwise, in less than thirty minutes, there will be no world to come back to.

X-O Manowar, Archer, Neville Alcott, Detective Cejudo and Betamax are ready to save the world.
Click for free PDF prevue!

Preemptive Pick:
Ales Kot, his name alone evokes meme-worth allusions to Mugatu’s “So hot right now.” A fairly new player in the big leagues, he’s been crushing hits out of the park: “Secret Avengers,” “Bucky Barnes: Winter Soldier,” and – along with Gorham – “Zero.” I see him making his own path, aligned closely to that of Ed Brubaker. So, if you like thrilling, down to “cut the red or blue wire” type stories, I don’t think this will let down.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #5Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #5
Marvel Comics

(W) Ryan North (A/CA) Erica Henderson
On The Rack: 5/6/2015

Publisher Synopsis:

The breakout character of 2015 continues her one-woman crusade against injustice and jerks in this standalone issue, a perfect jumping-on point for new readers! These TAILS of the Squirrel Girl will show you the Marvel Universe’s most powerful super hero from a bunch of brand-new perspectives, several of them QUITE ASTONISHING. This comic is actually a bunch of minicomics in one, giving it definitely the #1 most-comics-per-actual-physical-comic value in stores today!

Preemptive Pick:
If you haven’t picked up an issue of “Squirrel Girl” yet, I feel bad for you. Do yourself a favor and just start with this issue. This issue will resemble an annual issue as it has many minicomics bunched together. You’ll see why it’s funny, smart, and the comic book that fandom needs.

Variant Covers For ‘Bill & Ted’s Most Triumphant Return #1’

Bill and Ted are supposed to be making a come back via film but, before they do, BOOM! Studios is bringing them to comic books first. This March, the time-travelling duo who are destined to bring peace and harmony to the galaxy with their Wyld Stallyn rock and roll will be partying on in the pages of a BOOM! comic book. With a slew of preview images for variant covers, we robots are excited to return to San Dimas High. The only thing that could make this comic book better is if George Carlin were still here to perform the Audio book version.

Brian Lynch (“Angel: After The Fall”, “Spike”) will write “Bill & Ted’s Most Triumphant Return” and will be joined in storytelling duties with Jerry Gaylord (“Fanboys vs. Zombies”) on art. The first issue will have an additional story as a backup by writer Ryan North (“Adventure Time”) and artist Ian McGinty (“Bravest Warriors”, “Hello Kitty”). Between the two stories, I hope to see Rufus, Death, Station, Napoleon and/or Genghis Khan. What I’ll most definitely get is an excellent adventure.

An Expanded Look at ‘Star Wars: Princess Leia #1’

The homecoming of “Star Wars” to Marvel Comics has been met with huge fanfare and near-universally positive reviews. We gave the first issue, “Star Wars #1”, a glowing review right here. This Wednesday, the Darth Vader stand-alone series will get a public release and again, we absolutely loved the issue. Not to let a common thread stop, it almost goes without saying that we’re incredibly excited for the upcoming “Princess Leia” series from Marvel Comics.

It’s not only because it’s a “Star Wars” comic with canon-level stories, but also the creators that are telling those stories. Mark Waid and Terry Dodson are going to tell the tale of a rebel spy and princess of Alderaan who is caught by the Empire. Her punishment becomes the punishment for her entire planet as Alderaan is used as an example of the destructive power of the original Death Star. Mark Waid is going to bring that weighted responsibility to the princesses story. Mark Waid, in an Interview on Marvel.com said,

“How does she really cope with losing her entire world once the events around that loss have calmed down somewhat? Does she choose to be a princess of nothing – or does she set out to rebuild her heritage and civilization?”

Terry Dodson will bring the striking beauty of the character and the lovely world of Star Wars that we all love to life as Waid’s story follows Leia right after the end of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”. Along with the release are several wonderful variant covers. Scroll below the solicit for a sneak peek at those covers and be on the lookout for more great in-continuity “Star Wars” stories from a galaxy far, far away coming to a comic book store near you.

Spider-Gwen Gets Her Own Title

Spinning out of the web that is ‘Spider-Verse’ comes Gwen Stacy AKA Spider-Gwen. Spider-Gwen was first announced with an image back in June of this year. She had her first appearance in the pages of “Edge of Spider-Verse #2”. The book was an overnight success and Marvel isn’t one to ignore fan reactions. They’re ready and willing to give every hungry fan more of the reality where Gwen Stacy, not Peter Parker, was bit by a radioactive Spider. If that’s the case though, any current reader of “The Amazing Spider-Man” series by Dan Slott will want to know if Silk exists in the Spider-Gwen universe too. To find out, comic book fans will need to read up starting February 2015.

MARVEL PROUDLY ANNOUNCES SPIDER-GWEN!

New Series Focuses on Gwen Stacy who was Bitten by the Radioactive Spider Instead of Peter Parker

New York, NY—October 17th, 2014 — Revealed at Marvel’s New York Comic Con “Spider-Man” Panel, Marvel Comics is excited to announce the latest addition to the Spider-Man mythos – Spider-Gwen! The new on-going series will focus on Gwen Stacy, who, in an alternate universe, was the one bitten by the radioactive spider giving her spider-powers!

After a sell-out introductory issue that’s part of the events of the current Spider-Man storyline, “Spider-Verse“, the new series, written by Jason Latour (Edge of Spider-Verse, Wolverine and the X-Men), artist Robbi Rodriguez (Edge of Spider-Verse, All-New X-Men), and colorist Rico Renzi spotlights Marvel’s latest cult-favorite hero as she introduces readers to a whole new world where she is the one true spider-hero!

Speaking with Marvel.com, Latour confesses that the drum-playing, rebellious Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Gwen, has a long road ahead of her to prove she’s not the costumed menace the NYPD has painted her as– especially since her father is the NYPD Captain tasked with bringing her down. “[Spider-Gwen’s] journey is going to pull her father along into its wake. He knows her secret, and it’s a truth that threatens to make his world into a very dangerous lie.”

Latour also teased villains for Spider-Gwen and her father through the series, “We’ll absolutely see an ‘evil’ Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil), and the Kingpin. I’m a huge old school Daredevil fan, so I get this real sick thrill out of twisting him around and making him the villain. There’s also a new twist a character you’d immediately identify as a villain, who we’re re-casting as a more complex threat to Gwen and Captain Stacy—a character coming at her from within the system…”

“It’s a rare character that gets the public outcry that Spider-Gwen got,” says Senior Editor Nick Lowe. “From the sell-out of Gwen’s first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we’re excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!”

Marvel Comics’ Spider-Gwen swings into comic book retailers in February 2015.

Preview Spider-man & The X-Men #1

Similar to the “Batman and Robin” title last year that changed hands between Batman’s friends and foes after the death of yet another Robin, Spider-Man will fill in where Wolverine is not after the events of Marvel’s “Death of Wolverine”. It appears Marvel is really going through with killing off a fan favorite character but not all changes are permanent. Peter Parker himself was recently restored to his body after “dying”. Peter Parker’s Amazing Spider-Man became Doctor Octopus’ Superior Spider-Man for well over a year.

With Wolverine’s duties as headmaster and professor over at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning needing a fill-in with his inevitable death, it would appear the ol’ canuckle head has faith in his fellow Avengers Spider-Man to be his replacement. Peter did teach for a number of years so the job should be easy for him right? Then again, why would anyone make a comic book about Peter Parker and make life easy on the web-slinger? Check out Marvel’s official word below and then some amazing preview art they’ve provided for us all to cheer for.

Meet the Jean Grey School’s Newest Member in SPIDER-MAN & THE X-MEN #1 This December!

This December, meet the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning’s newest faculty member…Peter Parker?! That’s right, it doesn’t take an X-Gene to sculpt young minds from the hallowed halls of the JGS, and ol’ webhead is joining the payroll this December in SPIDER-MAN & THE X-MEN #1! Rising star creators Elliott Kalan and Marco Failla settle Peter Parker into his role as the JGS’s newest Guidance Counselor. Keeping young mutants on the right path might be a reward unto itself, but Spidey has other plans.

“He’s there because Wolverine asked him to do it, though being a teacher isn’t the extent of the mission” says writer Elliot Kalan in an interview with Marvel.com. “Before Wolverine dies, he had a suspicion that something was amiss at the school and that one of the students wasn’t what they seemed. Only he didn’t know which student. It’s Spidey’s job to find the truth – though he can’t help but hope to also have a positive influence on the lives of the students.”

Only the denizen of the Jean Grey School aren’t exactly down with their newest employee. Especially when he leads a group of the younger students into a confrontation with Sauron and Stegron, the Dinosaur Man! Time for the Wallcrawler to show his stuff as a hero and as a teacher. Be there when Spider-Man shepherds the next generation of mutants as they struggle to survive high school and a villain team-up 65 million years in the making when SPIDER-MAN & THE X-MEN #1 swings into comic shops and onto digital devices this December!

For more info on Spider-Man & the X-Men, read the full interview with Elliot Kalan tomorrow on Marvel.com.

Gail Simone To Write New ‘Secret Six’ Series For DC Comics

The falling out between Gail Simone and DC Comics over the editorial direction of her “Batgirl” run was very public. But, just because the writer and her editor were having creative differences, that doesn’t mean the two are on bad terms. Quite the contrary it turns out as Gail Simone is writing a brand new series for DC’s New 52 universe. The title of the book is “Secret Six” and the internet rumor mill is churning with the possibilities that brings. Simone is a writer who knows her public and interacts with them on a daily basis via her Twitter account @ . She’s a bit of a tease on her feed and has announced two of the six mystery characters, Catman and Black Alice, who will be appearing in the book this December.

Dale Eaglesham will be working on covers and the designs for the book while Ken Lashley handles art duties on the interiors. The book promises to be a welcomed new title to the New 52 lineup. DC Comics has announced that “Secret Six” will be,

“Full of mystery and danger, SECRET SIX features six characters who, when thrown together, hate each other and must learn to work with each other.”

3 New Clips From ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Although the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy already happened, and although members of the members of the press at the San Diego Comic Con got to preview of the film, the clips keep coming. The anticipation that Marvel Studios is building for “Guardians of the Galaxy” isn’t unusual for film promotion. What is unusual is the hype these kinds of clips generate is usually very low and for this film the hype they’re building is huge. The geek community is literally drooling with anticipation for next week’s opening of “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Marvel is building the frenzy into a fervor with three new clips from Marvel Entertainment.

A few of our bots had the privilege of catching the film in San Diego this week and the limited feedback they were able to give us was summed up in the three words they used: Incredible, Wow, Amazing. If that seems like hyperbole to you, check back soon for a full review of the film by our reporters. In the meantime, let these clips give your afternoon a pumped feeling. Guardians comes to theaters in just seven more days, August 1, 2014.
