First Look at the All-New All-Different ‘Doctor Strange’

On September 10th Marvel released the first glimpses of the soon-to-be released, post “Secret Wars,” “Doctor Strange” title by writer Jason Aaron and artist Chris Bachalo. This is a timely teaser as the Diamond Comic Distributors final order cutoff for the book at your local comic shop is (Monday) September 14th.

Aaron and Bachalo have worked together in the past (e.g. “Wolverine and the X-Men”) and fans can look forward to some strange tales from these two creators.

“Chris has a sort of wild inventiveness that’s perfect for Doctor Strange,” Aaron told Marvel.com. “Not to mention that he draws the most amazing monsters. And if you thought our version of the Jean Grey School was weird, well, wait until you see what we’re doing with the Sanctum Sanctorum.”

Doctor Strange by Chris Bachalo

Diehard fans of old-school Ditko-era Strange can rest easily knowing that Aaron has done his homework, spending time reading the pages of “Strange Tales” where Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first brought the occult into the Marvel Universe.

“I want to celebrate all the weirdness that is Doctor Strange, while having him face a challenge unlike anything he’s ever faced before,” said Aaron. “One that rewrites the rulebook for what it means to be the Sorcerer Supreme.”

Adding to rewriting the rules for Stephen Strange is a slight change in costume. As Bachalo strives to keep costumes practical, he’s taken some minor liberties with good doctor’s attire.

“Two of the adjustments I made had to do with the cloak—or as I like to refer to it as, the cape—and his ballerina tights,” said Bachalo. “Jason and I envision Stephen as being more of hands-on character and it didn’t make sense that he’d have a huge cloak and huge collar surrounding his head—how does he see to his left and to his right?—and that he doesn’t wear shoes. The tights are nice for around-the-house, but what about in a street fight with battle axes?”

Doctor Strange's New Costume

Bachalo has already proven himself capable of dark and weird landscapes perfect for Strange. His long-run on “Uncanny X-Men” with writer Brian Michael Bendis was a great place to flex his creative occult muscles with the character Magik, as she stepped into Limbo wielding her Soul Sword and casting spells.

“With ‘Doctor Strange’ our challenge is to create a unique environment for Stephen to exist in,” Bachalo told Marvel.com. “Something beyond the norm that differentiates itself from other spaces. You should be able to view the locations and know that it’s a Doctor Strange book. One of the first things I expressed to Jason when joining was that I didn’t want to spend a bunch of time drawing cosmic battle scenes. That’s been done a million times and I had no interest in it. I think I was looking for something a little more down to earth, something a little more grounded in reality. I want to create a new cosmos to play in. Grab bits and pieces from what’s been done before but then throw in a few things for a different perspective. We’ll see how it turns out.”

“Doctor Strange” #1 will be on the rack in your local comic shop on October 7th, though to guarantee your copy, final orders are on September 14th.

A Look at ‘Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #1’

Over in “Death of Wolverine” writer Charles Soule is dead set on making Logan dead. The months to live have come and gone, the variant covers for the first issue of “Death of Wolverine” made a splash at comic shops and comic conventions. Now the world waits to find out the aftermath of the most tragic thing to ever happen to a super-hero this week. With that comes more books to fill in the holes the main books just can’t get to. There will always be gaps when your comic book only has twenty-two pages of story.

For those readers that can’t get enough of the “Death of Wolverine” storyline Marvel is going to print stories about the legacy everyone’s favorite canuckle head is about to leave behind. It’s mighty nice of the powers that be to give us a look behind the curtain. Under the images and the official press release below you’re in for a treat. Without further ado and courtesy of Marvel Entertainment, here are some purdy pictures by Oliver Nome and Skottie Young.

“Think of the death of Wolverine as an inciting event, one thing that has seismic-level effects on the lives of a great deal of the Marvel Universe,” says Charles Soule in aninterview with Marvel.com. “We’ll start in Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy by examining those effects on people close to Wolverine, but over time, we’ll range far and wide to see what sort of black hole Logan’s death actually leaves.”

Will Wolverine’s legacy be shaped by heroes who valiantly fought alongside him…or by the villains who he spent his whole life protecting the world against? TRAILER: The Time of the Doctor

The epic 50th Anniversary episdoe of Doctor Who, “The Day of the Doctor”, was only just weeks ago and if you’re anything like me, you’re still reeling from all the events and timey-wimey events that happened! But buckle up, because we are only two weeks away from the Christmas Special, “The Time of the Doctor”!

The BBC has released a preview for the episode below. As any Whovian knows, this episode will be Matt Smith’s swan song and we will get our first look at Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. As the episode draws near, the reality that Matt Smith’s Doctor will be departing becomes more and more bittersweet for me. Some don’t care for Smith’s incarnation of the Doctor, but I quite love him and it will be sad to see him go. That said, there is always that air of excitement and the unknown that comes with a new regeneration, and I am incredibly excited to see what Peter Capaldi does in the role – I especially appreciate the fact that there was a bit of explanation in “The Day of the Doctor” as to why his regeneration will be bouncing around in perceived age; the Doctor will be “maturing” a bit in light of the events and revelations from the previous special.

Enough yammering from me, here is the preview for “The Time of the Doctor”!

So much to take in in that brief preview! The Silence, Weeping Angels, Daleks, and of course, Trenzalore! Looks like we may be seeing the epic “final stand” of this Doctor that was elluded to in “The Name of the Doctor” and mentioned a few times prior. I have a feeling Matt Smith’s departure will be nothing less than epic!

“The Time of the Doctor” Christmas Special will air on the BBC on Christmas Day! Check your local listings!

COMICS: Egos, More Creator Owned Sci-Fi From Image

Image Comics announced Friday that they will be publishing another creator owned title this January. Egos is a sci-fi story that sounds like a meta-textual take on Galactus. The writer, Stuart Moore, has a long history with the comics industry. Moore has been a writer of many paper-back versions of comics stories like Civil War, runs on Namor and Firestorm, as well as being an editor on modern classics such as Preacher. The co-creator Gus Storms is the artist on Egos. His history is as a contemporary comic book artist has been closely tied to sci-fi books. His style is almost a combination of Tony Moore and Nick Pitarra with a little Matt Hollingsworth, but when you see his work you’ll know his style is clearly his own.

The timing of the release of this new book is similar to their announcement earlier last week about Kirkman and  Azaceta’s new horror project Outcast. Image continues to be the place for creators. Their #WhatsNext campaign really does make one wonder, what’s next? If you’re looking for more information for Egos be sure to pick up Saga #15 for a preview at the end of that book. You can pre-order Egos #1 now with an expected publication date of January 15, 2014. Until then, check out some wonderful preview art by Gus Storms and what other creators in the industry are saying about Egos.

“I’ve known Stuart Moore since his days at Vertigo, and I always thought he was one of the very smartest minds in our industry. I’m delighted that he’s writing a new book for my friends at Image, especially because EGOs is his best story yet.”
-Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, The Private Eye)

“Stuart Moore was one of comics’ greatest editors precisely because he’s a great writer. Everything he writes demands attention.”
-Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary)

“With EGOs, Stuart Moore’s thoughtful writing style really comes into its own. I look forward to following this one as it develops—very highly recommended.”
-Garth Ennis (Preacher, Fury MAX)

“EGOs sets up house at the junction of superhero stories and big-ideas sci-fi—then trashes the junction and builds its own huge, insane theme park.”
-Mike Carey (The Unwritten, Lucifer)
