‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ Review

POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU 8 out of 10; Directed by Rob Letterman; Written by Dan Hernandez, Benj Samit, Rob Letterman and Derek Connolly; Starring Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, and Bill Nighy; Rated PG for action/peril, some rude and suggestive humor, and thematic elements; Running time 104 minutes; In wide release May 10.

Video game movie adaptations have been at best, mediocre. Even the fun ones like the first Mortal Kombat would never be considered high art, but the majority of them have been downright drivel. So when they announced Detective Pikachu, a mix of live action and CGI, the first thought many had was, “why do we need or want this?” Surprisingly, Pikachu is an absolute delight to behold and is full of enough action, charm, heart and humor that people of all ages and familiarities with Pokemon will find something to enjoy.

Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) isn’t really into Pokemon. He just doesn’t care enough to find a companion for himself as he is too busy trying to work up the ranks of the insurance company he works for and recover from his estranged father’s absence. Until one day he learns that his father, a detective with Ryme City Police, has been killed in the line of duty. Seeking closure, he goes to his father’s apartment to gather his things only to bump into a Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) that has amnesia and can actually speak to humans. Well Tim, anyway. Realizing that there was more to his father’s death than just an accident, the two of them team up with budding investigative journalist Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) to unravel the conspiracy that is bubbling beneath the surface of Ryme City.

I’ll be the first to say that I had the highest raised eyebrow when this was announced. Then the trailer dropped, and it had me hooked, and after viewing it, I walked out of the theater with the biggest smile on my face. It’s rare to find a movie that is filled with so much joy and wonder that it nearly takes your breath away. While it’s destined to make a ton of money at the box office, Pikachu doesn’t feel like some kind of cash grab. This is a labor of love made by people who have a deep respect and care of the source material, and that love permeates every second of the movie. From the way the Pokemon “talk” and react to things, to all the Easter Eggs hidden in every scene that only Pokemon fanatics will catch, to even the winking nods to some of the absurd parts of the mythos, this was made by fans to appeal to everyone, not just the hardcore geeks.

But what was most surprising was that the Pokemon are just the top layer of what is actually a story about relationships between friends, and fathers and sons. Many kids feel estranged from the parents for a variety of reasons, and while their kids may hate or resent them for that, for some, there is still often a longing to reconnect or at least lay to rest the sins of the past, and that is what Tim is trying to accomplish here by investigating the death of his father. He knows it can’t change the past, but it might help him cope with the future. But the film isn’t heavy handed with this as just when things feel like they might be getting too dark, Pikachu will pop up with some sarcastic thing to say that brings the story back to a lighter side while still making its point.

This shouldn’t have worked, but I’m exceedingly happy it did, because the world is a brighter and lighter place for having Detective Pikachu in it. Everything just wraps up together so nicely, that it’s a lovely little present and palate cleanser from the emotional distress of Endgame that is sorely needed in the movie world. Newcomers, hardcore Pokemon fans, kids, and adults (and yes, there is some risque humor that only they will get, a la Rocky and Bullwinkle) will find plenty to love, so take the whole family and have a blast!

‘Pokemon’ Is Coming to Netflix

Pokemon is coming to Netflix, more specifically the Indigo League seasons (Those are the episodes you’re nostalgic for with the original one hundred and fifty) and the Black & White seasons, which was the last series to premiere before the current X/Y generation episodes that are airing now.

Netflix will also have The Pokemon movies: Black – Victini and Reshiram, and White -Victini and Zekrom. Which are more or less the same film but with a variation based on which Pokemon you wanted to see.

Beginning Saturday, March 1st, Netflix members can instantly stream hours of awesome Pokémon animation! Don’t miss aspiring Pokémon Master Ash and his trusted Pokémon partner, Pikachu, as they embark on adventures through two popular seasons of the animated series and two action-packed feature films.

Netflix members can watch TV episodes from the Pokémon: Black & White season, where Ash and Pikachu traveled to the Unova region to discover new rivals, new challenges, and all-new Pokémon. The very first season of Pokémon animation, Pokémon: Indigo League, will also be available to stream instantly. The classic season introduces viewers to the world of Pokémon through Ash and Pikachu as Ash strives to become a Pokémon Master.

Pokémon fans can also catch Ash, Pikachu, and their friends in the dual movies Pokémon the Movie: Black—Victini and Reshiram and Pokémon the Movie: White—Victini and Zekrom. Watch as Ash must prove himself a hero to earn the help of the Legendary Reshiram—or Zekrom—to rescue the Mythical Pokémon Victini and save Eindoak Town. Two Legendary Pokémon…and two exciting versions of the story!

Visit Netflix today to watch exciting Pokémon adventures in TV and film!

With any luck this means that Pokemon will start becoming more and more available via streaming services rather then being locked down to TV broadcast like it currently is.

    Super Mario 3D Land

Watch 70,000 People Control One Pokemon Game

UPDATE (02/19): Apparently the Twitch chat service crashed a few times yesterday due to the high volume of traffic in the channel. At some points yesterday the stream had over 100,000 viewers, which is almost expected of popular streams such as League of Legends, but is unprecedented in channels this young. The real problem isn’t the high viewer traffic though, it’s that the chat has nearly quadruple the activity of a normal channel.

For those of you who want to know more about the massive, massive community forming over this little social experiment, a lot of fan art, general reactions to the events in the game, and other media can be found on Reddit. There’s also a section there with live updates for people who don’t want to sink hours and hours into watching the steam – although a lot of the joy comes from watching Red stumble around everywhere. And here’s a handy post with instructions for filtering out the commands being sent to the game, so that the Twitch chat functions more like a chat room and less like a spam flood.

More updates to follow as the game progresses. As I type this, Red has been renaming nearly every Pokemon in his possession with the Name Rater. Have to say, my favorite so far was when the recently caught Zubat was changed from “—” to “AAAAA” to “JJSSSSS-” But hey, roughly 80,000 people can only do so much.

ORIGINAL POST: One of the most hilariously frustrating things I’ve seen in a quite a long time, an anonymous twitch.tv user has combined an emulated copy of Pokemon Red and an IRC chatbot to create a version of the game that can take commands from viewers in the channel’s chat room.

Currently, the game is taking commands from over 70,000 people.

I’m honestly shocked that they’ve gotten as far as they have, with a couple badges under their belt and a few Pokemon at their side, they’ve come a decently long way in the four days since the stream went live. At the time of this writing they’re stuck in the Team Rocket Hideout, and continiously come achingly close to the end…only to end up backtracking for a while.

For those that want to see some of the highlights that have happened (or will happen, if you get screen-punchingly mad watching the live feed), the twitchplayspokemon profile page will be occasionally updated with clips from the stream.

It’s a very interesting social experiment, and I’m interested to find out how far viewers will be able to get through the game before the creator has to step in and fix some fatal mistake.

Check out the steam for yourself here.

VIDEO: Unlock Pokemon X/Y’s Sex Scene

I don’t quite know what to say about this one… It’s College Humor’s new video about what really goes on behind closed doors at the Pokemon daycare.

I’ll just put a NSFW tage here and pray you keep for hands above the desk.

GAMING: Pokemon Bank Delayed

Setting up a Nintendo Network ID has been a bit of a struggle since Christmas Day, allegedly linked to the large number of 3DS and WiiU systems trying to connect simultaneously. Nintendo is also claiming that the traffic from the Japanese launch of the Pokemon Bank and Poke Transfer apps did not help with the issue. Because of this Nintendo took to Twitter at about 7 pm last night to announce that the Pokemon Bank launch would be delayed in North America. The link sent out had a delay statement on the Nintendo website, but did not give a length of the delay, nor a time frame for a newly expected launch.

Initially, the Pokemon Bank was launching with a 30 day free trial and legendary Pokemon that could be snagged upon instalilng the app. This trial was only available to those downloading between Dec.27 (launch) and Dec. 31, 2013. Nintendo has not said whether or not the trial period parameters will be extended or changed. Hopefully this gets fixed soon since this is one main reason that this Pokemon has been considered the best yet. You can read the official statement below.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company International have postponed the launch of Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter – two software applications that were originally scheduled to launch for Nintendo 3DS on Dec. 27 – due to a large volume of traffic to the Nintendo Network service. Due to the high traffic, players are having trouble setting up Nintendo Network IDs and downloading content in the Nintendo eShop on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. We truly regret the inconvenience, and wish to reassure everyone that providing a solution is our top priority. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your continued patience.

Pokémon X & Y Are Out Now

To celebrate the relase of Pokémon X & Y Nintendo has released a live-action launch trailer:

I haven’t played a Pokémon game properly since “FIre Red” and “Leaf Green”, with “Yellow” and “Red” before that. “X” & “Y” are the first Pokémon games to come to the 3DS. As you can imagine, this is a big deal. I knew I wanted to play as soon as possible but didn’t want to hit a midnight release event. I decided to go with the digital download version which I had heard releases at 12 EST. That’s 2 hours early for me. I upgraded to an 8GB SDHC and painlessly copied all my data over. The games hit the store and the rush to download began. The store had several issues and I had to restart or enter my credit card details several times before it’d take but then the download finally started. It took just under an hour, not bad for 1.7GB of data. I went with “Y”, mostly because the majorify of people I’ve seen are choosing “X”, and I liked the cover art.

By the time I started playing it was nearly midnight and I was very tired. I was able to choose my starter Pokémon then play about an hour into the game. I chose Froakie. He evolves into a frog ninja, it was the obvious choice. So far the game is pulling at my nostalgia hard. So much has changed since I played Red back in 8th grade, yet it’s still very much the same. The jump to a 3D world is amazing and beatufiul so far. Battles are awesome with awesome animations, cheery sounds, and great looking Pokémon models.

Do you have a copy yet? Regardless of how you answered, why are you still reading this? I only stopped to write this post. Get playing or go find a copy in stores or on the 3DS eShop, “Pokémon X & Y” are out not worldwide.

NEW TRAILER: Pokémon the Origin

The PokemonCoJp Youtube page lunched a new “Pokémon the Origin” trailer late last night.

Looks like we’ll definitely see the full story of the original two Pokémon games play out in this TV special.

Mewtwo will also be making a cameo! I gots me a Master Ball saved up for that albino Clone Cat punk, you just try and hide in that cave!

POKEMON: Starter Evolutions For X and Y
