Video Game Quick Hits 9/14/2012

The above images were taken from Obsidian‘s home page on two consecutive days this week. The “countdown” began with a four on Tuesday and has changed daily since. This is leading up to the announcement of their next RPG project, one “So secret not even its project codename is yet being revealed.” The countdown will presumably end sometime today with the title and other details. Speculation is rampant. Considering the countdown started with a four, I’m betting that the initial speculation of Dungeon Siege IV is correct. But that’s probably flawed logic.

Details on the Prometheans (and some weapons) of Halo 4 have been revealed. It’s a lot of pictures, so just check out the story from yesterday. The game is scheduled for November 6, 2012.

I don’t know how useful any of this will be in a typical gamer’s console room but Microsoft has filed a patent for what is basically the Star Trek holodeck in your own home. Actually, it’s nowhere near that sophisticated as I’m sure Trekkies will love to explain. Instead, their patent calls for a device that would holographically project a game world onto the walls of your living room and track your head movements to know exactly where you’re looking. The walls and ceiling of your home would become an extension of your television. Presumably, assuming this will ever happen, this won’t happen until at least next-gen, and probably somewhere beyond. Excerpted from the patent text:

“Interactive media experiences, such as video games, are commonly delivered by a high quality, high resolution display. Such displays are typically the only source of visual content, so that the media experience is bounded by the bezel of the display.”

“Even when focused on the display, the user may perceive architectural and decorative features of the room the display is in via the user’s peripheral vision. Such features are typically out of context with respect to the displayed image, muting the entertainment potential of the media experience.”

“Further, because some entertainment experiences engage the user’s situational awareness (e.g., in experiences like the video game scenario described above), the ability to perceive motion and identify objects in the peripheral environment (i.e., in a region outside of the high resolution display) may intensify the entertainment experience.”

I barely have the space to use my PlayStation Move in my basement. And with a large window situated to the right of my gamespace, how will this work for me? Microsoft, send me a test unit for review, please.

Insomniac’s first foray into multi-platform gaming has received an official announcement. Being published by EA, Fuse (nee Overstrike) is a four-player action co-op focusing on what Insomniac does best, crazy weaponry. The game will feature four covert agents (Dalton Brooks, Izzy Sinclair, Jacob Kimble and Naya Deveraux) as they team up to use the eponymous Fuse for crafting new weapons in their mission to prevent an arms race. The in-game LEAP feature allows you to jump between characters during the game. Co-op is available on and offline, with your experience and character leveling moving between both modes. Release has been slated for March 2013, probably the perfect time to release a new IP as everyone will be finishing their holiday games and looking for something fresh to fill the void.

In the growing market of throwback-inspired games, 2011’s Terraria has proven to be a hit for PC gamers. Naturally, the next step is to take the title to consoles. 505 Games recently announced the action-adventure platformer that focuses on exploration and collecting will be coming to XBLA and PSN early next year. The game’s creator, Andrew Spinks, says “To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings. It’s always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have, and this is another big step in that direction! It’s been awesome working with 505 Games, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the additional features that they’ve been able to bring to this new edition of the game.” Those “additional features” are still under wraps, but there could be enough to sell a fresh copy to some of the game’s 1.6 million customers to date.

You may have noticed earlier this week that system software version 4.25 was released on PlayStation 3. I don’t have a full breakdown of the changes, but I do know one of the highlighted features. For PlayStation Plus subscribers, you’ve probably noticed that the 150MB of online storage just hasn’t been enough for all of your games, especially the larger files. This update seems like it’s just for you. Your storage cap has now been raised to 1GB. You may still fill it up, but that’s a pretty significant amount of backup for your game saves.

Like Obsidian above, SEGA has also opened a teaser site for Project Omega. It’s counting down to September 20th. On the site, you’ll find some racy photos of an attractive female torso that has been tattooed with something the Germans call “ass-horns” when it’s on a woman’s lower back. I think it’s supposed to look demonic, but it actually just looks a tribal biker tattoo everyone got in the ’90s to be different. You know, different, like everyone else. Despite the deliberate sexiness and “hip” design, this teaser already has me uninterested in whatever SEGA might be doing.

For the record, those tits are likely not Bayonetta’s, despite the early speculation. It’s still possible. But why wait until September 20th to talk about Bayonetta 2 when Nintendo announced it yesterday as a WiiU-exclusive. No details, such as a release date, were included in the announcement. We’re just left with knowing that Platinum Games has it under development and you’ll have to buy Nintendo’s “next-gen” console to play it.

That announcement, by the way, was made yesterday at Nintendo’s big WiiU reveal. CitizenBot has pretty extensive coverage of everything announced, including the price points for both bundles. The console looks like it could have some success, especially with gamers in the “family” or “casual / slightly core” categories. Unfortunately, this reveal only serves to confirm for me that the WiiU is not next gen. I’ve created some controversy with this statement before, but I stand by it. The only true innovation is the tablet gamepad. But, Sony is incorporating similar usage for the PS Vita in conjunction with the PS3. Also, Microsoft’s upcoming SmartGlass seems to already be one-upping the function. From what I’ve seen of it, any smartphone or tablet running Android, Windows Mobile, or iOS will have an app available to incorporate into your XBox 360 experience. I’m still willing to be wrong. Maybe PS4 and neXtBox won’t push the innovation any further either. Maybe the next generation is simply boosted processing power.

Video Game Quick Hits 9/4/12

Is it really September? The summer has really flown by but I really feel as if I’ve amde the most of it. Not only have I had fantastic trips to Ireland, Moab, and Orlando, but I’ve been very active by competing in my first Spartan race, first triathlon, and first half-marathon. That last one happened this past Saturday at the Bonneville Salt Flats. It was a different kind of race than you’d expect. If you’ve never been to the Salt Flats, think of it as a vast expanse of natural concrete. By vast, I mean this stuff goes on so far that you can actually see the curvature of the earth. And by natural concrete I mean this is not like a dirt road; the salt is packed and dried so hard that 80mph winds and torrential rains didn’t actually soften the surface at all. Instead, there was about half an inch of standing water on the race course. It’s flat, so it can’t run downhill. It’s natural, so there’s no built in drainage. But, even with all that water, the ground was still hard enough to support vehicles without rutting. It’s a very strange phenomenon. As for my results, I wouldn’t say it was impressive but I’m quite pleased with my time.

But, you all came to read gaming news, not my mediocre race results. So let’s get started with a few highlights from PAX Prime:

Ted Price of Insomniac introduced an new IP, Fuse. This is actually a rework of Overstrike that they announced at E3 2011. After three consoles worth of success with Sony exclusives (Spyro, Ratchet, Resistance), this is their first multiplatform title. All we know so far is that this will be a four player online co-op and that the game’s website is set to launch on September 12th. Oh yeah, we’ve also got a screen shot.

The recent trademark filing from Square Enix has proven to be the next Final Fantasy game. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was revealed over the weekend, but not as a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2. The game begins with 13 days left on the Doomsday Clock and also includes day/night cycles that will affect NPC interaction. Lightning will have transforming weapons and a massive wardrobe. The game will be set on four islands known as Navus Partus and you’ll be using a monorail to get between them. That’s basically all we know for now, but a 2013 release date has been mentioned as well.

Also revealed at PAX Prime were two new characters for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Once again, the announcement of Nariko (Heavenly Sword) and Sir Daniel Fortescue (Medevil) seems to confirm the leaked list seen several weeks ago. The game is still scheduled for November 20, 2012.

In case there is any confusion, Hideo Kojima wants to make it perfectly clear, Project OGRE is not Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Also, Big Boss will be the main character in Ground Zeroes and he can now drive vehicles, a requirement for the game’s open world nature. This game also sees Kojima’s return as he is making it himself and it is still planned for current gen hardware. Which probably means it’s coming next year, but no confirmation on that yet.

We’ve been hearing rumors for some time that Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 had evolved. Randy Pitchford of Gearbox confirmed at PAX Prime that it’s actually evolved so much it is now an entirely new IP. According to Pitchford, Gearbox “kind of started to go in a place that started to get a little way from what the core of what the Brothers in Arms brand is all about… it needed to be unshackled.” Now that it won’t be tied to the planned franchise, I’d kind of like to see it tied to its obvious inspiration, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Expect to hear more about this when it’s “reannounced” at Gearbox’s community day, September 15th.

If you were one of the many upset by Gearbox’s decision not to include female protagonists in Aliens: Colonial Marines, your voice has been heard. The franchise has always been associated with strong female leads and the introduction of Jennifer Running means the game will maintain that pedigree. Randy Pitchford wants “everybody to be clear that there are playable females in both the mulitplayer and the campaign.” Good news. The game is set for release February 12, 2013.

343 Industries spent PAX highlighting some of the changes to Grifball and Capture the Flag modes in Halo 4. In the new version of Grifball, attackers will now be able to throw and catch the ball. Defenders, meanwhile, will have swords and hamemrs at their disposal. Killing the ball carrier with the sword will automatically give you possession. Using the hammer pops the ball loose for anyone to grab. A revised Oddball mode also includes the passing mechanic. A new addition to Capture the Flag is the “Flagnum” weapon. Equipping the Flagnum lets you use the game’s flag as a melee weapon once you have it.

From a Capcom press release: “Capcom is currently undertaking a thorough investigation into reports that Resident Evil 6 is being sold ahead of its official October 2 release date. At this time, all we can add is that it would appear this unfortunate incident is limited to a small quantity of stolen copies of the German USK PlayStation 3 version of the game.” That’s really all there is to the story. A few copies of the game were stolen and made it into stores early. You can probably find a copy online if you want it that badly. But, keep in mind that it will be stolen property, in German, and very expensive. You should probably just wait a month.

Remember the recent Ratchet HD collection that didn’t include Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked? I’m not sure why they waited, but the 2005 game is being remastered for a PSN release. Now word on a date, but “soon” should have you hopeful.

I’ve never been interested in the multiplayer component of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but Ubisoft has promised that the version coming with Assassin’s Creed III will be the most extensive yet. Leveling up your character, using the new, in-home Animus, will reveal more of the Abstergo storyline. According to Damien Keiken (Director, Ubisoft Annecy), “As you progress in the game and level up your character, you access these files and videos. Every month you’ll have new challenges to unlock new content that will continue the storyline throughout the year.” Changing weather will seriously affect your strategy in the game, but that’s only the beginning. I’m curious to learn why Abstergo would release a home version of the Animus to the public. Isn’t revealing their plan for a world domination a bad thing? This sounds big enough that I’m actually getting more excited for October 30, 2012. I thought the continuation of Desmond’s story and a whole new assassin would be enough. Now I’m getting promises of more Abstergo story too.

The Remote Play function of your Vita will be getting a serious boost very soon. Shuhei Yoshida recently tweeted that he was remote playing ICO HD from his PS3 to his Vita and it’s “beautiful on OLED.” We are told to expect “more info soon.” HD versions of God of War and Shadow of the Colossus are expected to follow soon after.

Finally, for those late to the party on Gotham City Impostors, it’s now free to play on Steam. All prior DLC is also coming free with the latest version. Still looking for confirmation, but it appears this will also be shifting to free to play for PSN and possibly XBLA. Get your Batz or Jokerz ready. This will now be a quite literal “free for all.”

And that does it for the early edition. Check back Friday as I’m sure they’ll be plenty of new announcements, even without PAX feeding the news fires.

Video Game Quick Hits 8/31/12

Say “goodbye” to August. Fall isn’t officially here yet but it’s definitely that time of year. If you’re into NCAA football, the season is on. The Utes opened last night by embarassing Northern Colorado 41-0. The pros in the NFL start next week. In the world of video games the blockbuster titles are starting to roll out for the busy holiday season. Before you know it you’ll be stuffing turkey and buying presents.

Sony is opening the Fall season with a deluge of retro gaming to get you motivated for the new stuff. The 1.80 firmware for PS Vita has launched, bringing PSOne Classic support with it. Europe’s list of Classics is much more extensive, but the North American batch is off to a good start:

  • Arc the Lad
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Hot Shots Golf 2
  • Jet Moto
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tomb Raider
  • Twisted Metal 2
  • Wild Arms

If you’ve already purchased any of these for PS3 or PSP they’ll be in your download list. You can download them straight to your Vita, assuming you haven’t already reached your system cap for that game. This list is pretty meager considering the library available. Hopefully more will be added to this list soon.

Techland, the developer behind Dead Island, has a new project in the works. Little is known about Project Hell except that it’s currently only being developed for PC. Consoles have been discussed as a possibility, but at this point in the cycle it’s anyone’s guess whether the console targets will even be this generation. We do know that project is a first person hack and slash that started life as a Dead Island mod but looked so good it’s become its own game. It’s too early for a release date, but we do have some concept art.

Remember that trademark I mentioned recently for Hearthfire? The assumption at the time was that this was the next DLC chapter for Skyrim. Turns out that’s exactly the case. Unlike Dawnguard, this new chapter won’t focus on as much story or combat. This add-on gives you the option of settling down. You’ll finally be able to buy yourself a plot of land, build a house complete with a library and garden, and start a family. Gardens, fish hatcheries, and beehives make collection easier. If you don’t want to tend to the day to day tasks of your new home, you can hire a steward to handle it. This seems like a strange add-on but I can see it being very popular. It’s releasing for XBox 360 on September 4th for 400 MSP.

Don’t get your hopes up for that same DLC on PS3 though. As you’ve probably noticed, Sony’s console hasn’t received Dawngaurd yet, let alone Hearthfire. According to Bethesda’s Community Lead, “gstaff,” you may not ever get it. According to “gstaff”

“It’s been a few weeks, and we wanted to make sure everyone knows where we’re at with Dawnguard. Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources, and things get much more complex when you’re talking about sizeable content like Dawnguard. We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone.

“The PS3 is a powerful system, and we’re working hard to deliver the content you guys want. Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we’ve been working on either, so the issues of adding content get even more complicated. This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content.

“We wish we had a more definitive answer right now. We understand the frustration when the same content is not available on all platforms. When we have an update, we will certainly let you know. We deeply appreciate all the time and support you have given us, and we’ll keep doing our best to return that.”

It’s strange coming out of Star Wars Celebration VI and not hearing anything about Star Wars: First Assault only to find out it’s penetrated the internet with all sorts of empty domain registrations. A trademark has also been filed for the title to cover everything from pencil sharpeners to “interactive entertainment software.” My guess is that this is nothing important. I’m expecting a simplistic online game as part of a new promotion for the franchise. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. George will tell us when he’s ready.

Metal Gear celebrated its 25th anniversary this week (I’m so old). At an event for the celebration, Hideo Kojima had a closed doors showing of a new game in the franchise, Metal Gear: Ground Zero. Everyone was sworn to secrecy, but this is the age of the internet. “Well other people are talking about it so… next Metal Gear shown, and it looks… HOT.” “Snake crawled, avoiding searchlights, killed guard, rode jeep, called in helicopter for evac.” “Sounds like Metal Gear, but the scale & atmosphere… Wow.” I’m not going to out anyone who said these things, but I trust the sources to have actually been in the premiere. The demo ended with a Snake in a helicopter and Ride of the Valkyries playing. The Apocalypse Now is hard to miss. According to all reports this is going to be an open world game, a first for the franchise, but will still include all of the steath action appropriate to the franchise. Kojima did make one major announcement publicly, Avi Arad (of Marvel fame) is producing a film based on the series. Dates and details for both projects are pending.

Metal Gear‘s Raiden and Evil Cole from the inFamous franchise have officially been added to the cast for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Both characters were on the leaked list of characters a few weeks ago. A private beta is currently in progress (I’ve played a little but this isn’t really my style) and a limited public beta is scheduled in the EU for September 11-18. The full game releases November 20, 2012.

The season pass for Borderlands 2 has been announced, outing four planned DLC add-ons. The add-ons “each feature several hours of gameplay and introduce new adventures, allies, enemies and environments.” The season pass will be $20, a $10 savings versus buying each pack separately. The game, as you should know, launches September 18, 2012.

Borderlands 2 developers Gearbox Studios is working on “a few” next-gen titles according to Randy Pitchford (Founder, President, CEO). As for what those games are, he’s not saying. He did mention that doesn’t care about the future of motion controls, but his enthusiasm about the “many steps between now and the holodeck” indicate that’s not entirely true. This mostly just has me wondering about all the secrecy from Microsoft and Sony. The developers have announced you have new systems coming, but you haven’t. Why not?

Of course, Gearbox isn’t the only developer building on the mysterious next generation. Team Bondi (L.A. Noire) has finally made an official mention of Whore of the Orient, and it’s coming to PC and next-gen consoles. The official blurb reads “Shanghai, 1936. Whore of the Orient. Paris of the East. The most corrupt and decadent city on the planet, where anything can be had or done for the right price. Plaything of Western powers who greedily exploit the Chinese masses. Boiling pot of Chinese nationalism, with the Kuomintang ruthlessly trying to suppress Communism and the labour movement. Home to the International Police Force, a group of Western cops hopelessly trying to keep the lid on and keep the peace.” The game has a great premise, though the issues Team Bondi had recently have mea little leery. This is why I’m anxious for next-gen consoles to be announced. Not necessarily because I’m ready to buy a new one, but because I want to hear more about the games I know are coming for them.

That looks like all the news for this week. Enjoy your long weekend. Try not to do anything productive. Stay inside and play video games all weekend. I’m not actually taking my own advice but I wish I were. Instead I’ll be running my first half-marathon Saturday morning out on the Bonneville Salt Flats. And what better way to cap that off than heading a little further west to Wendover for the imbibing of adult beverages and the losing of money? Maybe on Sunday and Monday I’ll be able to partake of that mythical activity known as a nap.

Video Game Quick Hits 8/21/12

I miss my PS3. It hasn’t gone anywhere or died at all. I’ve just been so busy I’m lucky to get a couple hours a week on it. I’ve been having fun with being busy. This past weekend I was in Moab, UT for a wedding and got a chance to see Arches National Park. That place is amazing. This weekend I’ll be joining a few other ‘bots in Orlando, FL for Star Wars Celebration VI. I’m really angling for a chance to get a look at Star Wars 1313, but I have no idea what they’ll have available. But I’m getting ahead of myself. We still have a few bits and pieces left over from Gamescom to cover.

Gabriel Dobrov, CEO at Haemimont Games, has announced they are already starting work on the next Tropico. But don’t get too excited just because you loved Tropico 4. According to Dobrov, “This time we’re wiping the whole game clean and building it from the ground up. We’re starting with a clean design this time and all the graphics will be new.” He declined further comment so who knows what this will mean. Shifting focus from a turn-based point and click to a first person shooter made the Fallout series go from “awesome” to “really awesome in different way” so this may not be a bad plan. It’s bound to make fans of the series a little nervous though.

Traveller’s Tales has revealed a little more about their next LEGO title, Lord of the Rings. If you’re familiar with past titles there’s not much new they can say, but they did mention at least 85 playable characters, some of whom were not in the films. Apparently the entirety of Middle Earth from Tolkien’s second age will be playable. Thankfully you won’t need to spend 16 hours walking to Mordor like they did in the films. There will be a fast travel feature, a la remote bat terminals from LEGO Batman 2. Prepare to callous your hairy-painted feet this Fall.

If LEGO journeys aren’t your thing and you can’t wait until October 6th to revisit Peter Molyneux’s former world then the announcement of Fable: The Journey‘s demo is good news for you. It’s coming to XBLA on September 17th.

Have you forgotten Remember Me? Sounds like that won’t happen again, as Capcom has explicitly stated that the IP is part of their long term plans. This is the exclusive that Sony dropped about a year ago and gave the rights back to Dontnod, the developer. Since then Capcom has picked up publishing for the now multi-platform game and they want to build a future for it. For now they’re pulling in assets from other projects, as Yoshinori Ono (producer for Street Fighter IV) is now advising on combat. I still haven’t actually figured out what this game is even about, but it sounds like i’ll need to get my hands on it when May rolls around.

Sanzuru and Sony had an announcement about your favorite thieving raccoon at Gamescom. What they didn’t want you to notice is that release date for Sly 4: Thieves in Time has slipped to early 2013. Which is fine, late 2012 is going to be crowded enough as it is, though a good family friendly game is always welcome around Christmas. The bigger reveal was that you’ll be able to use your PlayStation Vita in much the same way Microsoft has discussed SmartGlass, or Nintendo has described the Wii U’s tablet controller. You’ll also be able to play oyur save game across the two platforms, PS3 and Vita. Which is great, but it means you have to buy versions of the same game. Actually, no. This title will be part of the Cross Buy program. Buy the game once, get it on both platforms. Details on how that will work (likely as digital download only for Vita) were not explained, but look for more information soon.

Cevat Yerli and Crytek have a couple of minor things to note from Gamescom, but nothing urgent. First, they are looking into the possibility of bringing Warface, their free to play shooter currently in closed beta to consoles. Sony has already had some success with the model but Microsoft hasn’t experimented in that direction yet. Recent changes in the console online infrastructure and corporate philosophies mean both of them could be a future home for the title. However, this is in the theoretical phase only so it will be a long time before we see any progress if it even happens. Second, Ryse has sort of disappeared but not for the reasons being rumored. According to Yerli they wanted the Budapest team to work on tablets and have moved the Roman Kinect action game to a different area of the company. It is still in production and proceeding nicely, though they aren’t ready to discuss any further details.

We all know I don’t like to post rumors unless they’re really awesome. Which is why I’m choosing to skip the almost nonsensical rumors supposedly coming from a Bioware survey about Dragon Age III. On the other hand, anything that might clue me in to Fallout 4 is giving me rock hard nerd-boner. According to a few anonymous tipsters frm Reddit, one who supposedly has a direct connection to MIT, Bethesda has been in the Boston area scoping settings for their next post-apocalyptic entry in the franchise. Anonymous internet tipsters get very little credit in my book so I’m inclined to discount 90% of this, except Bethesda does have a strong connection to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and it would a be a ripe location for the next game. Then again, if we’re talking researching locations phase of development, we’ve clearly got plenty of time before this even sees the light of day. We’re likely talking next-gen. Which is probably the soonest I’d be willing to risk Bethesda’s notoriously glitchy game system and heavy-handed favoritism for 360.

You know how actors don’t like getting typecast? Apparently video game developers don’t care for it either. No, I don’t mean Bethesda is making a puzzle game. I mean something even more bizarre, like Harmonix making a real-time combat game. According to an ad on Gamasutra, Harmonix is looking for a combat designer “to create real-time, single-player combat experiences for a brand new IP on next-generation hardware.” They’re still finishing up Rock Band Blitz and Dance Central 3, but at least some of element of a next gen game already in the works will have single player, real time combat. It seems like a strange fit, but I’ve enjoyed Harmonix’s so far. I’ll give it a shot.

Other minor announcements:

  • PopCap says Plants vs. Zombies 2 is coming in late Spring 2013.
  • The Worms Collection has been confirmed for August 31st in Europe. North America?
  • Sony’s Sports Champions 2 set for release on October 30th. Despite archery, bowling, boxing, golf, skiing, and tennis included, I’ll still be getting Assassin’s Creed III instead.
  • Tokyo Jungle has been scheduled for September 25th in North America. Who would win a fight through post-apocalyptic Tokyo, a giraffe or a chimpanzee?.

That’s all for the early edition. I’m planning a late edition for Friday, but I simply don’t know busy I’ll be at Celebration VI. I may just write a bunch of Wookie-Zabrak slashfic instead.

Video Game Quick Hits 8/10/12

Here I was ruminating on Tuesday that summer is slow enough I should maybe kick this column down to weekly and then I get some hot news to finish up the week. Batman, Mass Effect 3, free games for PS+… it’s a good week for news. Read on!

Let’s start with a little sad news to get it out of the way. Despite reporting a fairly positive quarter, THQ has axed their plans for the inSANE trilogy. On the plus side, according to CEO Jason Rubin, they have returned “all of [their] IP rights to Guillermo Del Toro.” This means the Hellboy director could still make the game with a different publishing partner. Rubin did well with his former company, Naughty Dog, so I’ll trust his judgment when he says this isn’t the right fit for THQ right now. But Del Toro’s a badass and I want to see his game. Hopefully we’ll see a new publishing partner soon.

Assassin’s Creed III has a couple of interesting announcements. First, despite having one for Brotherhood and Revelations, the game will not have a multiplayer beta. The time spent on the beta will instead go directly to polishing the final game. That final game, by the way, will be different depending on your platform. We knew back in June that the PS3 was getting exclusive content. Based on the cover art, we now know that is adds up to 60 minutes of extra gameplay. The extra content is expected to come in the form of four missions, but we have no details on what that will include. We’ll find out October 30, 2012

Mafia III rumors are leaking out of 2K Czech, and they’re inadvertently revealing something even bigger. Apparently the third in franchise was planned as a launch game for next gen consoles but has now been pushed back to late 2013, early 2014 due to staff and budget cuts. The series cool, for what it’s worth, but the big reveal here is that it clearly indicates the next gen consoles (particularly PlayStation 4) are planned for some time before “late 2013.” It’s all rumor and conjecture, but this seems to strengthen plenty of other whispers I’m hearing – including the rumor that Thief 4 has been pushed to neXtBox (as I choose to call it) late next year.

The name Paul Dini should mean something to you. If your only hobby is video games, just know that he wrote that fantastic stories for both Batman: Arkham games. Unfortunately he won’t be writing the next one for Rocksteady, currently planned as a Silver Age / JLA story. There doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings on either side and he’s not ruled out for future work in the franchise. According to a blog post from Dini he asked about writing the third about the time Arkham City released. Rocksteady wasn’t ready for that planning yet and politely let Dini know that he shouldn’t turn down work waiting on them. So, he didn’t. His schedule is now booked through summer 2013, and Warner Bros. Interactive is looking to get the story rolling now. I’m sad to see Dini off the project, but there are a lot of other writers that can handle it. And as long as Dini has work, there will be great content rolling out somewhere.

Some time ago Crytek’s CEO, Cevat Yerli, put feelers out on his blog to gauge fan interest in TimeSplitters 4. He says the results are in, and they indicate a review of what they’re doing with the franchise necessary. But, interest simply isn’t high enough for the fourth game yet. That “deeper evaluation” is likely to yield “some surprises” soon, but it apparently won’t be the next sequel.

I’ve been fortunate enough to play some of the LittleBigPlanet Karting beta recently. I obviously can’t say much, but I will admit to being an awesome racer and a terrible creator. Others are making some seriously cool things. You’ll get your own chance at it soon as Sony has revealed it’s coming November 6, 2012. They’ve also announced the preorder incentive, the Game Maker Pack. This includes three Sackboy skins with accompanying karts: the race car driver (shouldn’t that be the default), the UFG mascot, and Sony VP of Random Weirdness Kevin Butler. They are also planning a special edition with a lenticular cover and other, unannounced goodies.

It’s no secret I’ve been a Shepard junkie since March so I’m devouring anything I hear about the upcoming DLC for Mass Effect 3. Additional dialogue options unearthed in the Extended Cut ending indicate “Leviathan” could introduce you to the Reapers’ creators. Incidentally, they are also the first to be reaped. Catalyst Child is likely their creation as well. This also hints that you may see new scenes in the ending after completing the DLC. Further exploration also mentions “Omega,” hinting at extra DLC that my be planned for taking Shepard back through the Omega Relay from Mass Effect 2‘s ending and reclaiming the area from Cerberus. Still no details on a release date, but they have announced a $10 purchase price.

The free games just keep on piling up for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Earlier this week I downloaded The Walking Dead, but still haven’t had a chance to play them. Now Sony has announced three independent games coming at no extra cost. Riptide Games’ Knytt Underground, Big Sky Infinity, and an unnamed title will all be free at launch for eight weeks. All three titles are set for this year. The free period is for PS+ subscribers only, and there’s no word yet on how much they’ll be for everyone else. [Note: My source for this information is in the UK, so this may be regional and not applicable to US subscribers.]

Things over at Irrational Games are shaking up. Regarding Bioshock Infinite, the planned co-op multiplayer segments have been cut. This doesn’t seem a big deal to Ken Levine, who summed up the move by saying they “are experimenting with things, and only if they are good enough will we put them in the game.” Fair enough. I’d rather see them cut it now than waste time producing sub-par elements. Behind the scenes, two key elements of the staff, director of product development Tim Gerritson and art director Nate Wells, left the company on Thursday. Moving the other direction, Gears of War executive producer Rod Fergusson has joined the team. The in and out changes do not appear to be related.

On the subject of gaming staff, things definitely seem to have taken a weird turn at Bioware Austin, or is that EA Austin? According to the official line from EA, Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk is taking a vacation. His LinkedIn account looks like it’s more along the lines of no longer working for the company. He claims he left the studio in charge of the latest Star Wars MMO in May. Zeschuk and fellow co-founder Ray Muzyka were both conspicuously absent from a recent leadership meeting according to a source inside the meeting. This is highly unusual for the pair. Rumor is the studio will be renamed EA Austing as Matthew Bromberg, CEO of Major League Gaming, takes over Zeschuk’s role.

That’s it for the week’s news. I know it’s hot out and there are great games inside, but get yourself some sun this weekend. I’ll be spending the weekend at mom’s in central Utah where I’ll probably get way too much of it. Something about drinking beer in the desert always leaves me sunburned and amnesiate.

Video Game Quick Hits 7/31/12

July is at an end. While San Diego Comic-Con is over, convention season is still in full swing. We still have Germany’s Gamescom, Star Wars Celebration VI (where I hope to get a little more information on Star Wars 1313), and Dragon*Con. The NFL preseason starts next week, the end of August will also see the beginning of the NCAA football season. Of course, NCAA Football 13 is available now, and Madden NFL 13 can be pre-ordered (August 28th). All of that just means we’re getting awfully close to the annual holiday game glut. With all the great games coming this Fall, what are your priorities? Assassin’s Creed III is definitely at the top of my list. LEGO Lord of the Rings isn’t far behind. But, until then, we’ll have to stick to news. Even if there isn’t a whole lot of it.

007 Legends is shaping up to be the epitome of Bond games, covering portions of six films in the franchise. Activision is holding back on the voice talent either. Daniel Craig is the obvious choice for the titular hero. But other, not so recent, cast members will also be chiming in. Rory Kinnear will be back as Bill Tanner. Naomie Harris from the upcoming Skyfall will be voicing her character. Hugo Drax and Jaws will be voiced Michael Lonsdale and Richard Kiel in the Moonraker portions. Which means Kiel will be at least doubling his quotable 007 lines; he only had one in two movies. This is another one of the hot Fall games, scheduled for October 16th.

Love it or hate it, Kinect doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The familiar “Better with Kinect” banner has most recently been spotted on the cover of Need for Speed: Most Wanted. What that Kinect functionality will be hasn’t been addressed by Criterion and EA, but previous attempts at camer based steering have been a complete flop. It’s doubtful they’ll be trying it such an anticipated game. There may be a use for voice commands, and the Forza 4 head tracking could be nice addition. don’t be shocked, but this one’s also set for Fall, October 30th.

Capcom started talking about Dragon’s Dogma 2 recently, mostly because the first game had “exceeded expectations” in Japan. It’s still struggling in the west, but it’s been well-reviewed. After crossing the one million copy mark in Japan, it definitely seems well-suited for a sequel. Especially when compared to another Capcom franchise; Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City sold only 450,000 in Japan. According to the game’s creator, Hideaki Itsuno, there’s already enough content to begin work. Itsuno says the first game is only 60-70% of what he had envisioned, and much of what was cut will be incorporated into the follow-up. Of things left on the cutting room floor, you may see a quest creation feature and the ability to run on top of enemies. Depending on how much of the existing framework can be utilized, a sequel could possibly be seen in the next 12-24 months.

This should technically be filed under rumor until we get official confirmation, but the roster and stage leak for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has all the right air of legitimacy. For the most part, nothing is surprising. I do think it’s a little strange that Evil Cole McGrath is a separate character from Good Cole Mcgrath rather than a skin, but the power sets are pretty different. Also, the announcement of Toro was kind of implied when they announced Kuro. The leak apparently springs from files discovered in a beta for the game, so none of it is set in stone and the list isn’t necessarily complete. While Sony doesn’t “comment on rumors or speculation,” I wouldn’t be surprised to see an official announcement soon that just happens to corroborate this reveal. The game is scheduled for October 23, 2012 and here’s the full list from the leaked files:

  • Characters
  • Big Daddy
  • Colonel Radec (Killzone)
  • Dante (DMC)
  • Evil Cole
  • Fat Princess
  • Good Cole
  • Heihachi (Tekken)
  • Jak
  • Kratos
  • Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
  • Nathan Drake
  • Parappa the Rapper
  • Raiden (Metal Gear Solid)
  • Ratchet
  • Sackboy
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil)
  • Sly Cooper
  • Spike (Ape Escape)
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Toro (Sony Mascot)
  • Stages
  • Aiden’s Tower (inFamous)
  • Black Rock Stadium (Twisted Metal)
  • Columbia (BioShock Infinite)
  • Dojo (Parappa the Rapper)
  • Dreamscape (LittleBigPlanet)
  • Franzea (LocoRoco)
  • Hades (God of War)
  • Invasion (Killzone)
  • Metropolis (Ratchet and Clank)
  • Paris (Sly Cooper)
  • Sandover (Jak & Daxter)
  • San Francisco (Resistance)
  • Stowaways (Uncharted)
  • Time Station (Ape Escape)

I also spotted some power-up items and “minion” characters that can be summoned with special moves, but I couldn’t really corroborate enough of it to publish. Suffice to say, ancillary characters like Athena (God of War), Zeke (inFamous), and Captain Qwark (Ratchet & Clank) will have limited roles. Power-ups included things like Sackbot (LittleBigPlanet), Sonic Rift (ModNation Racers), and Murder of Crows (Bioshock Infinite).

As you probably suspected, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD‘s launch was successful by Activision’s standards (120,000 downloads). Also as you may have suspected, its very existence had ulterior motives. Josh Tsui, CEO of Robomodo, has explained the “lower risk” of a downloadable game “allowed [them] to take some chances, which benefits both developer and publisher.” He went on to state “the prospect of a fuller game is definitely on the table — it’s just a matter of when and how.” Reviews on the game are mixed. Praise comes for the title sticking so closely to its roots, while the criticism reads almost identically. For what it’s worth, Tsui recognized they would have detractors because the game relied so much on subjective nostalgia, but “had we changed it up and modernized it, we would have gotten the same criticism from the other side.” Sounds like a new retail entry is just what the franchise may need. Regrounding the series in its origins, while incorporating more of the later entries’ exploration elements could be the billion point combo they’ve been after all these years.

The August update to PlayStation Plus’s Instant Game Collection is right up Big Shiny Robot’s alley. The first two episodes of Telltale’s The Walking Dead will be free for subscribers beginning August 7th. This is on top of the ten other games currently in the rotation. I’ve been a little ashamed to admit I haven’t gotten on board with this adventure title yet. I’ve been busy, but not so busy I couldn’t make the time. I just had a feeling my patience would pay off with a promotion like this one. Other updates for PS+ include 20% off The Expendables 2 with today’s release, and 20% off SoundShapes next week (pre-orders open today). Next week also opens pre-orders for 20% off Papo & Yo, releasing on August 14th.

There’s another nice update to XBox Marketplace and PSN Store today, especially if you like big shiny robots. Big shiny shapeshifting robots! The demo for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is ready for your download queue, three weeks ahead of the retail release on August 21st. The demo includes two single player missions, multiplayer character customizing, Team Deathmatch, and the online Conquest mode. The first mission sees Bumblebee holding off Megatron’s Decepticons while evacuating the planet. The second mission puts you in the role of Vortex, a Combaticon that allows shifting from helicopter to jet to giant robot. I haven’t always beena big fan of Transformers games but descriptions like that are bound to set your heart a flutter.

That’s it for July and this week’s early edition. Looks like I’ll be playing up that Transformers demo and some LittleBigPlanet Karting beta while I wait for The Walking Dead next week. What are you playing this week?

Video Game Quick Hits 7/27/2012

As we near the end of July I’m quickly coming to realize summer is ending far sooner than I’d like. Though with the heat we’ve had the last few weeks I almost don’t mind. July’s been fairly slow but August will keep me so busy it will surely be over too soon. The upside? The Utes get back to the gridiron on August 30th, at home against the Northern Colorado Bears. Oh yeah, there’s also this small side trip to Florida for Star Wars Celebration VI. It was 1999 when I took the Greyhound bus to Denver for the first Celebration. I never expected that would lead me to five more of them. I also didn’t realize that the guy I met on that blizzard-y bus ride would one day become my editor, Swank-mo-tron. If you’re headed to the event this year, be sure to sign up for the Bounty Hunt. While I won’t be defending my win from the Friday competition in 2010, you’ll definitely see me there. But let’s get on to the game news:

If you were savvy enough to pick up Quantum Conundrum when it recently released to your download service you’ve certainly been enjoying your fair share of physics puzzles. If you’ve already finished, you may be wanting more. You’re getting more. Two DLC packs, “The Desmond Debacle” and “IKE-arambe!,” are scheduled for release August 15th and September 12th, respectively ($2.99/ea). Each pack will introduce a new wing of Quadwrangle Manor. The first pack will focus on the bird, Desmond. The second will see you trying to rescue IKE, the Interdimensional Kinetic Entity.

All of the innovation promised for the Kinect has actually resulted in only three things: tacked on additions for games that don’t need it, mini-games for children, and interactive exercise videos. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’re like me, you probably spend half of your gaming time shouting at the TV anyway. And kids like games too. Not to mention, you could probably use a little aerobic exercise. Look at Mass Effect 3 or Skyrim for the first example. For the children (and the kid in you), two new games have been announced for September 18th: Kinect Nat Geo TV and Sesame Street TV. Each will have eight interactive episodes available (400MSP per episode or 2400 for all eight, full “season” also available on disc). For the fitness minded, Nike has a new addition scheduled for October 30, 2012, Nike+ Kinect Training. You’re heading to the game store for Assassin’s Creed 3 that day anyway. Might as well get yourself the modern day version of the Jane Fonda workout tape to help burn off the excess Halloween candy at the same time.

Do you remember Capcom’s 2005 PS2 release of Haunting Ground? Based on sales figures, you probably don’t. Reviews weren’t great, but they weren’t horrible, resulting in a current score of 67 on Metacritic. Why do I ask? Because the ESRB recently rated the game again, indicating a potential release on PS3. It does have a significant niche following, even for a mediocre title. Whether you’ll be helping Fiona and her German Shepherd escape a haunted castle as a PS2 Classic release or an HD remaster isn’t yet clear. As soon as I hear something official from Capcom I’ll include it in a later edition of VGQH.

Based on Matthew Lourdelet’s community campaign, the “Cold Stream” DLC for Left 4 Dead 2 has been released on Steam. It was scheduled for XBLA on Tuesday, but was not included in the update. According to Valve, it’s been delayed, but they “are working with Microsoft on a release schedule. [They] don’t have an ETA yet but… hope to have it out soon.” Expected price is 560 MSP when it releases. Blood Harvest, Crash Course, Dead Air, Death Toll, and No Mercy maps should be included along with some “surprises.”

I am not the biggest Resident Evil fan, my experience really begins and ends with the second game. The release of Resident Evil 6 doesn’t have me excited in any way. But, being so immersed in gaming culture, I can’t help but love the limited quantity pre-order incentive Capcom recently announced. It’s an Umbrella umbrella. This bonus is only available from the Capcom Store and in very limited quantities. Even better, it’s also available as a separate item for only $16.95. Maybe I should try jumping back in to the series, or maybe I should just buy me a new umbrella. The game is set for October 2, 2012 but you can preorder now.

Like so many games in a crowded market, the Worms franchise has always interested me, but I never seem to get around to it. Several titles have released to PSN and XBLA since the remake of the 1995 original showed up in 2007. If you’re not sure where to start, but would like to give it a go, maybe you should wait until the Worms Collection is released. This retail bundle will include Worms, Worms 2: Armageddon and Worms: Ultimate Mayhem (which is a collection itself, combining Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem). It also includes six DLC packs for the various titles. No pricing was announced and it’s currently only listed for Europe, but I expect more details and a US version soon.

Are you excited for Sleeping Dogs? Do you still have a Just Cause 2 save? It seems to a be bit of a random combination, but that save game will immediately unlock a set of Rico gear for Wei Shen in your first safe house. Not only does the gear look cool, but the zipline will allow you to action hijack vehicles from a much greater distance. So keep that save a little longer, Sleeping Dogs is out on August 14th.

Many of you have already preordered Transformers: Fall of Cybertron from your favorite retailers. Others have been waiting to find the best incentive. Do you want bonus skins and weapons? A free copy of the previous game? Or do you just want to save some money? Activision has finally given us a breakdown:

  • GameStop: G1 Optimus Prime Skin (SP/MP), G1 Megatron Gun and Shockwave Blast Cannon (SP only)
  • Amazon: G2 Bruticus Skin (SP only)
  • Wal-Mart: Download code for Transformers: War for Cybertron ($20 value)
  • Best Buy: $10 off and 15% off the strategy guide

The game is set for release August 21, 2012 but a demo is scheduled for July 31st. Expect two single-player missions, competitive multiplayer, and character customization in the demo.

Can’t say I actually know anyone eagerly awaiting Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, but it’s delayed again. It was originally slated for August and recently slipped back to October. Now it’s headed for 2013. Did they heed my warning and decide not to oppose the juggernauts of fall/holiday gaming? Or does it still need “further polish?” Namco Bandai and City Interactive have both confirmed the delay, but the reasoning is still vague. The most official response so far simply says they want it to be successful and they love the engine. They did say the level of polish needs to be high, but didn’t exactly cite it as a reason for delay. Maybe they’re afraid to admit they don’t want fight Call of Duty for retail space. I see nothing wrong with that, it’s just savvy marketing.

Square Enix first mentioned a version of Final Fantasy XIV for PS3 back in October but has been very silent since. Though very little was revealed, they’ve recently broken their Mute spell with the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Playing off of the core concept of rebirth, this “2.0” version includes the new world Hydaelyn. According to Naoki Yoshida, Producer/Director, “Since announcing our plans for the future of the title last October, we have been working tirelessly to include all of the elements that we have promised in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn…. This new title not only becomes a symbol of a completely new Final Fantasy XIV, but also marks the beginning of a new stage as the latest title in the Final Fantasy series.” Release date, cost, and fee (or free) to play were not announced. Normally I’d follow this up with a “stay tuned for details soon” kind of statement. But this Square Enix talking about Final Fantasy, this might be the last we hear about it for years.

CDProjekt Red is looking for a Multiplayer Programmer with “experience in developing RPG games,” “physics in a multiplayer environment,” and “creating gameplay systems in a multiplayer environment.” Further requirements are “at least one shipped multi-platform, multiplayer title,” and experience “with matchmaking solutions on different platforms.” The position is for two RPGs, one in a “dark fantasy world” and the other in the cyberpunk genre. In response to the immediate rumors that started over this ad, the marketing head, Michal Platkow-Gilewski, clarified. He stopped short of confirming the “dark fantasy world” is The Witcher 3, as that game hasn’t been announced. But that was clearly the message. Cyberpunk is their previously announced adaptation of the 1980s pen and paper game from Mike Pondsmith. According to Platkow-Gilewski’s statement, “We believe that there’s still a lot of space for innovation in the RPG genre. At this stage of our games’ development, we want to explore all possible directions, check what would be cool, what’s feasible and – always the most important for us – what suits our games the best.” What I’m reading into this is that there will certainly be a multiplayer component to the two games and that at least one, possibly both, will be multiplatform. It’s good to remember that a multiplayer component doesn’t necessarily mean a horde mode or big arena battles. Technically, Dark Souls had a multiplayer component; as did inFamous 2. Neither of them fit the traditional view of multiplayer.

Still playing Battlefield 3? Want details about “Aftermath,” the upcoming fourth DLC expansion? Of course you do. It will apparently include four new maps set in war-ravaged Tehran. The maps will encourage vertical and horizontal combat. Also planned are modified troop transports and civilian vehicles that have been adapted for combat. It will be free with Battlefield Premium and is coming in December.

There are a few games you can point to throughout each generation that really pushed the medium forward. You probably had two or three jump into your head just now and I’m betting at least one was a Zelda game. One of the most important in my eyes is the original “system seller” for PS2, the one that introduced the modern concept of an open world game, and the one that made Jack Thompson a household name: Grand Theft Auto III. The top down games on PS1 were great, but really laying waste to Liberty City (and killing hookers for a refund) started with the franchise’s first entry on PS2. This game eventually led to a retro-romp through 1980s Florida in Vice City and the zenith of the generation, San Andreas. When I first noticed the game had been recently re-submitted for rating I wondered what new form it would take. It’s already on iOS. Could we be getting an HD collection? No, but it is coming to PSN on July 31st. Which, ultimately, is actually a disappointment. The game’s 12 years old. As fun as this was, it’s not going to hold up. No motorcycles, no multiplayer, no HD upgrade, no trophies, etc. This could be a fun nostalgia title, but the price point for that attraction is $2.99, not $9.99. Vice City was also included in the rating submission, but it was not announced for release. If it were a dual pack for ten bucks I might consider it. But I actually still have a functioning PS2 and both discs. If Rockstar wants me to revisit this one on PS3 it’ll have to be a freebie for PS+. An HD trilogy, on the other hand….

That’s all for the week. If you’re in the Salt Lake area, come to Brewvies on Sunday to watch Sylvester Stallone ruin the future. Geek Show Movie Night’s free double feature this month is Judge Dredd and Demolition Man. We know the movies are terrible, that’s why we have beer.

Video Game Quick Hits 7/13/12

A Friday afternoon in the summer should have me much more encouraged to head outside and enjoy the sunshine. Then I look at the mercury and remember that the first half of this year has, on average, been the hottest first half of any year in the United States on record. So, do I go outside, or do I sit in the air conditioning and play video games? Actually, I don’t have air conditioning, just a leaky, ancient evaporative cooler that’s scheduled for replacement next week. So maybe I’ll do a little of both. In the meantime, you’re probably sitting comfortably in the AC at work and slacking, so let’s get to the news.

Am I the only one thinking those goddamn birds need to take a class and smoke some herb? No longer content to be on every portable device and downloadable gadget, they’re now moving to the retail disc space with Angry Birds Trilogy HD for Move, Kinect and 3DS. The “ultimate collector’s edition” has “new cinematics, extras and other entertaining content,” according to Petri Järvilehto, Rovio’s Executive VP of Games. It will compile all of the level content from Angry Birds, Seasons, and Rio. No Angry Birds in Space? I’ve got to hand it to Rovio, all they did was add some animations to a physics engine and somehow created a game more popular than that weird visor thing that almost destroyed the Enterprise before Wesley Crusher stopped it. Now they’re actually making discs and swinging with the top tier of games, still without creating any gameplay beyond a simple physics demo. The high def birds will be assimilating you this holiday season. With no price announced, assume it will be exactly how much makes sense for a stocking stuffer.

How often do you use your Kinect? If using it unlocked achievements and avatar items, would you use it more often? That seems to be the goal with Kinect PlayFit, which lanched earlier this week for all XBox Live members. This is basically a fitness dashboard that tracks the calories you’ve burned using your Kinect throughout the various games available. There are leaderboards to see where you stand, but why you’d use them I’ll never know. Comparing your fitness progress to others is the most surefire way to be disappointed with yourself. I like the idea that you can get some exercise while playing a game, and my wife enjoys Fit in Six for Move, but advertising your productivity to the world doesn’t seem like the best motivator. This looks like a great tool for achievement hunters, and a nice app for helping you track your calorie burning and identifying small step goals. Just do yourself a favor and ignore the online components.

As expected, and outed by code in the Extended Cut, more DLC is on the way for Mass Effect 3. In addition to the “Earth” multiplayer pack coming next week, “Leviathan” has been confirmed by Anthony Skordi, a voice actor who apparently worked on the episode. The “Earth” pack is expected to be similar to prior multiplayer expansions, including being free. “Leviathan” will likely be paid (I expect $9.99) and has not been officially confirmed. According to Skordi, he voices Leviathan, a rogue Reaper considered a traitor to his race. Shepard will apparently meet Leviathan on an expanded mission prior to the assault on the Cerberus base. The episode should explain a bit more of the Reaper origins, as well as provide Shepard with additional galactic support in the form of War Assets. While we await more information about “Leviathan,” check out the extensive list of additions coming next week in the “Earth” pack:

  • Class: N7 Fury (Adept): Throw, Annihilation Field, Dark Channel
  • Class: N7 Destroyer (Soldier): Multi-Frag Grenade, Missile Launcher, Devastator Mode – includes T5-V Battlesuit
  • Class: N7 Demolisher (Engineer): Homing Grenade, Arc Grenade, Supply Pylon
  • Class: N7 Paladin (Sentinel): Snap Freeze, Incinerate, Energy Drain – includes omni-shield
  • Class: N7 Shadow (Infiltrator): Tactical Cloak, Shadow Strike, Electric Slash – includes katana a la Kai Leng
  • Class: N7 Slayer (Vanguard): Phase Disruptor, Biotic Charge, Biotic Slash
  • Weapon: N7 Piranha Shotgun
  • Weapon: N7 Typhoon Assault Rifle
  • Weapon: Acolyte Pistol
  • Map: London
  • Map: Rio de Janeiro
  • Map: Vancouver
  • Objective: Escort Mission at Waves 3, 6, and 10 (random)
  • 12 Weapon Modifications
  • 11 Gear Upgrades
  • New, harder, Platinum difficulty level

Apparently last year’s PSN Play promotion was a success, as Sony is doing it again this summer. Beginning on July 24th, you’ll be able to preorder The Expendables 2 (releases 7/31). Three additional titles will be available for preorder one week ahead of their release dates throughout the promotion: Sound Shapes (8/7), Papo & Yo (8/14), and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (8/21). Not only do PS+ members get an additional 20% discount on each game, but buying two or more gets you credit on the PlayStation Store for buying music, movies, more games, DLC, etc. Last year, preordering also netted you some exclusive content, like avatars and wallpaper. That will probably continue again this time.

Rocksteady is rumored to be working on a new Batman game, but it won’t necessarily cash in on the cliffhanger ending from Batman: Arkham City. Instead, it may be going the prequel route. That wouldn’t be too unusual in modern media, except Batman has a long and varied history. Remember that unlockable ’70s era Batman from the last game? What if they did a whole game, focusing on Batman’s first encounter with the Joker, in a Silver Age style? This all completely in the rumor zone, but it’s too awesome of an idea to ignore. Frankly, I don’t see a full production game with a move this risky. I think Rocksteady is working on Arkham 3, but a downloadable episode(s) of Silver Age Batman could be a great way to make the wait more bearable.

More next-gen rumors are being fueled by the recent publication of a December 2010 patent filing from Microsoft. Whether you call it neXtBox, XBox 720, Durango, or some other moniker, the schematics indicate a customizable board, tossing the conventional, structured console format out the window. Instead, this concept would use a base multi-CPU, multi-GPU architecture that allows for hardware upgrades, much like PC gamers have been using for decades. This architecture would certainly contribute to a longer console life span, but it might also create obstacles for newer games to be adopted by those who haven’t upgraded their hardware. The patent filing is 18 months old, so it’s anyone’s guess if it’s even still applicable to Microsoft’s plans. Regardless, it’s interesting to see what their engineers are thinking about the next generation.

In what could be a major coup in the gaming industry, Vivendi is looking to sell its 60% share in Activision Blizzard. There are several companies currently in talks to make the purchase, including Time Warner and a Chinese investment firm. Those would both have an impact, but not nearly as much as a Microsoft purchase. Some of Vivendi’s financial troubles could be solved by the potential sale of part or all of their Activision stock, worth up to $10 billion. With next-gen consoles on the immediate horizon, that’s a lot of dough to put at risk. On the other hand, look at Activision Blizzard’s franchises: World of Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, and Marvel comics. That’s just a few of the bigger ones, they have a lot more you know well. The battle for console exclusives could easily be the deciding factor in who survives the next generation. With that 60% share, would Microsoft claim all those franchises for itself, or would they allow sales on Sony and Nintendo platforms, keeping a cut from their competitors games sales as well as their own? Watch this closely. This may be a reason to start reading the financial section of your paper.

Following in the footsteps of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, Spartacus Legends looks to bring the gory glory of the Starz’s TV series to the home console. Coming in early 2013, the game will include online and offline multiplayer battles with “thousands of ruthless weapon combinations.” Liam McIntyre is providing voice and likeness for the playable Spartacus. Players can also choose from Crixus or a created gladiator. Other characters from the series are also expected to be playable. Platforms are not yet announced, but expect it for PS3 and 360 at least. The game is expected to be playable at E3 this weekend and I’m hoping for a report from one of our regulars on location or a “deputized” ‘bot that can give us the rundown.

We’ve had a rash of game-related movie news this week. Not only did we hear about CBS picking up the Deus Ex rights, but we also found out Micahel Fassbender will be starring in and producing the Assassin’s Creed movie with Ubisoft. Both of those have potential. Then we have the Need for Speed movie. You just can’t help but expect this movie is going to be terrible. Without a single frame of footage shot, Disney and Dreamworks clearly have the same expectation, as its been dated for February 7, 2014. That’s right, February. As in the month movies go to die. Do yourselves a favor, make this one straight to DVD.

Another film in the works with slightly more potential, is God of War. Actually… maybe not. Universal has brought in the writers from Saw 4-6 and Saw 3D films to freshen up the script from David Self. That would David Self who wrote the Road to Perdition screenplay. Self is also being billed as an Executive Producer and the guy has a reasonable amount of talent. Why hacks like Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are being included is a mystery. Do you really need two new writers just to add gore? With no planned release window, this one still has time to potentially be good. But Universal is headed the wrong direction if they want to make the film the Clash of the Titans remake should have been.

The Fassbender movie isn’t the only expansion on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Starting yesterday, a three part comic, The Fall, is available exclusively for iPad. This expansion focuses on a new Russian assassin, Nikolai Orelov. The comics start at $0.99 and are available now from iTunes.

A new co-op multiplayer mode has been announced for Assassin’s Creed III. “Wolf Pack” looks to be a new take on the ever-present “Horde” mode style of gaming. Up to four players will cooperate to take down targets, with smarter AI and tighter time limits the further you progress. Later sequences (waves) will feature decoys and lookouts to protect your target. The mode works great in Gears of War, and I’ve personally been loving it in Mass Effect 3, but how will it work in a franchise that’s based on stealth and punishes you for open combat? Looks like we’ll find out October 30th.

In addition to the upcoming games for this year’s Summer of Arcade, Microsoft is also celebrating five years of the promotion with some free gifts. There will be five new skins for Minecraft and five tracks for Trials Evolution. Each skin and track will be themed around one of this year’s Summer of Arcade games: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Deadlight, Wreckateer, Dust: An Elysian Tail, and Hybrid. Starting on July 18th, all XBox Live members can access the free content by checking out the Summer of Arcade Experience on your XBox dashboard.

Despite my report on Tuesday, it appears we’ve all been misled about Halo 2 Anniversary Edition. 343 Induistries has outright denied they are working on the title. While we did get the standard format, “we do not comment on rumours or speculation,” we also got a firm denial. When asked at an ExpertZone Q&A whether the remake was forthcoming, the answer from 343 was simple: “We are not working on that at this time. We are kind of busy.” This could simply be a calming of the fire. But, until I see official screens or confirmation from 343 and Microsoft, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt by assuming it’s probably in the plans, but not actively being produced.

This late in the cycle, I’m not sure why Microsoft would do a special bundle with a 360 and Halo 4. Sony’s doing it with Assassin’s Creed III as well and it still makes little sense. But Sony at least has the excuse that gamers have been playing the series on the competitor’s platform and this is a good excuse to add a PS3 to the home. With Microsoft, if you’re a junkie for Halo, you’ve already got an XBox 360. Is the assumption here that there’s an untapped market who haven’t played Halo but want to bad enough to buy a themed console? Or are they marketing to the people who haven’t replaced a broken console because there hasn’t been a new Halo to warrant the purchase? Regardless, they’re doing one. On top of what appears to be a bad decision anyway, they’re making it ugly as hell. The bundle will include two controllers and headset and is out with the game on November 6th.

That does it for this week. If you aren’t in San Diego getting sneak peeks at all the games I wish I were already playing, check back next week when we’re sure to have coverage of them.

Video Game Quick Hits – 7/2/12

July is starting off pretty strong, lots of news in the early edition this week, and it all ends with some speculation on the future of the gaming industry. Cloud distribution? Free to play? Sony, Microsoft, EA, and Crytek are all talking about the future, and some of it scares me.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the upcoming collaboration from Studio Ghibli and Level-5. Not being into anime I keep getting tempted to just write this one off. But then I remember how awesome Level-5 games have been and I see the art and think it’s worth a shot. The story about a separate world with analogs of certain people also reminds me Stephen King and Peter Straub’s collaboration, “The Talisman.” So I think I am going to play it, but I’ll be passing on the just announced “Wizard’s Edition.” It’s only been announced for the EU and Australia so far, but it’s reasonable to think it will come to the US in some form. This edition has your standards: a nicer box, the game, a book, and some DLC. But the book isn’t your standard concept art magazine, it’s a 300+ page hardcover companion with an included bestiary, item descriptions, spells, and history of the game’s alternate world. The set also comes with a plush doll of Drippy, Oliver’s odd companion. The DLC includes two additional familiars, the “golden mite” and “golden drongo.” Two more familiars, “flutterby” and “griffy,” are available as pre-orders bonuses from select retailers. The game is scheduled for January 22, 2013.

As if it isn’t bad enough that our games are constantly getting delayed, now the DLC is being delayed too. The “Arctic Strike” pack for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is not going to hit its scheduled release today. The delay isn’t long though, as it is still expected to release later this month. According to Ubisoft’s official announcement, “We decided to take a small amount of extra time to further polish the content. The pack is planned for release later in July and the exact release date will be announced as soon as possible.” The add-on will include several new maps “from the streets of Moscow to the far reaches of the Arctic,” a new multiplayer mode, six weapons, and a Guerilla co-op map.

When E3 closed last month, most of the gaming press was busy talking about everything they had seen and what they found most exciting. Very few discussed what they felt was missing, or were surprised they didn’t see. It’s not really surprising that Grand Theft Auto V wasn’t on display, as Rockstar has always had a shaky relationship with the event and with ESA, the organizers. But it’s still a game that everyone would liked to have seen, even if it didn’t have a very large presence. Gamescom, the next major gaming event, is happening next month in Germany. The latest hype video for that event has just a momentary glimpse of footage from the game’s trailer released last year. Speculation is now that Rockstar will be showing the game at that event. But, as usual, Rockstar doesn’t “comment on rumor or speculation.” Which isn’t an outright “no.” Knowing Rockstar’s traditionally reclusive approach, and knowing they have a built in market of millions without the need for major press events, I doubt we’ll see them in Germany. I think the next you’ll see from them is an exclusive preview to a major gaming magazine, likely Game Informer, and a few more teaser trailers right before the game’s release, which is still scheduled for late 2012.

Several months ago, Ubisoft previewed the various collector and special editions of Assassin’s Creed III that are releasing in Europe. At long last, they’ve finally revealed the edition we’re getting in the States, where the game takes place. This $120 Limited Edition will include a 9.44″ statue of Connor, an embroidered 28″x48″ colonial flag, and a metal Assassin belt buckle. I’m a little disappointed that they haven’t included a picture for this edition with the announcement. That’s sort of standard procedure with limited editions. Instead, I’ve got a picture of the UK’s Freedom Edition. It’s likely the Connor statue is the same. The game releases October 30th.

People change jobs all the time. And if you’ve read VGQH long enough you’ll know that sometimes those job changes are important enough they just have to be reported. One of those was announced yesterday. If you’re a fan of fighting games, you should know Seth Killian‘s name. Remember the final boss from Street Fighter IV? Seth? Yeah, that’s him. He’s been at Capcom as “special combat advisor” for several years. His work was instrumental on SF IV, as well as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and other entries into their gaming catalog. So who’s scooped him up from Capcom? Sony has just brought Seth on as lead game designer with the external group and Santa Monica Studio. You should know that name too, they’re working on their fourth entry in the God of War franchise now. The external group at Sony is responsible, in its various forms, for games like Journey, PlayStation All-Stars, Escape Plan, Unfinished Swan, etc. Seth is a real talent and whoever stole him from Capcom probably deserves a raise. This move shouldn’t be that surprising though, as Seth has always had a great relationship with Sony, having appeared on their Blogcast and even serving as a guest judge on The Tester. Here’s Seth, on the left, chatting with the Blogcast crew at E3 last month:

How excited are you for Halo 4? Don’t answer that, we all know. You can’t wait to get that disc, pop it in, start pwning n00bs, and spouting racist, homophobic nonsense at children. Actually, please refrain from that last part. But don’t get too excited yet. Not only are you going to have to wait until the game launches November 6th, but you won’t be headshotting ten year olds as quickly as you’d expect either. That’s because you’ll be spending time sorting through the files on your nearly full hard drive and deciding what to do delete, then watching the install screen as the game creates the 8GB file needed for multiplayer! That’s according to a recent update on the XBox product page. Seriously, 8GB? I’ve had some large installs, some up to 4GB and I think that’s insane. My current Rock Band file is probably over 10GB, but that grew slowly over time. How long is it even going to take to install that? And what’s the benefit? This thing better have zero load times. And I can’t help but notice that the link provided above doesn’t just tell you about the install size, it also has product links for buying XBox-branded memory sticks and the 320GB media drive. Is it just my pessimistic nature, or is it reasonable to think this might be as much about selling storage as about needing the storage?

After the announcement last month at E3 about Sony’s changes to PS Plus and the Instant Game Collection, there’s been plenty of concern about how and when new titles would roll in. Sony seems to be answering some of those questions as they’ve revealed the next three games being rolled into the collection. For the month of July, Gotham City Impostors, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and Renegade Ops will be free for PS+ members. All three are PSN titles, as opposed to the blockbuster retail releases already seen with Little Big Planet 2 and inFamous 2 (both of which are still in the collection). Of the original 12 games, three have also been rolled out: Virtua Fighter 5, Hard Corps Uprising, and Choplifter HD. Those three are still available if you “purchased” them last month but didn’t download or have deleted them, as long as you maintain your Plus subscription. Seeing as Gotham City Impostors was already announced as 50% off for the summer sale, I can’t help but think these changes are somewhat impromptu. I’m curious now to see what next month brings.

In what could prove to be a major change to the landscape of gaming, Sony has bought Gaikai, a cloud gaming service, for $380million. Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment, says this will enable users “to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.” Which devices? Tablets and smartphones, surely. But maybe the PS3 and Vita as well? PS4? David Perry, co-founder of Gaikai, also seems excited about the direction this could go, saying they’re “honored to be able to help Sony rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide.” These types of streaming services have been around for some time, but haven’t really gotten a strong hold in the mainstream gaming audience. With Sony getting involved, and bringing the power of the PlayStation brand to bear on it, this could be a major shift in the gaming continuum. Or it could be a fad like motion controls.

In response to Sony’s acquisition, Microsoft simply added that they were unconcerned about the purchase. The attitude of their statement actually sounds like they expected the move, or at least something like it. Which, considering their own investments, they probably did. According to a Microsoft representative, “The cloud has been a key component of our strategy and a big area of investment with Xbox for many years. Through Xbox LIVE we’re serving up gaming and entertainment in the cloud to more than 40 million people. We’re committed to delivering extraordinary entertainment experiences across devices in a uniquely connected way through Xbox, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and other popular devices, and we’re looking forward to continuing to innovate in this space in the future.” For the first hints at Microsoft’s cloud plans, look to their announcement of Xbox Music at E3. This app is set to launch later this year. For a monthly or annual fee, you’ll have a streaming source similar to Spotify that can also store your own music from other services in an online locker. If reports are correct, you can expect to access your music from any device running Windows 8.

And, speaking of Windows 8, Microsoft has just laid claim to a number of domain names that were in dispute with someone in China. It’s notable that they deliberately sought out Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org. With Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 set to release later this year, could these domains be related to the officially nonexistent but clearly deep in development next-gen console? XBox Infinite has been a rumored working title for the console.

All of the discussion about cloud gaming and digital distribution seems to have gotten in EA’s head. EA Labels President Frank Gibeau sees the company going 100% digital in the near future. He does clarify that “soon” is going to be dictated by gamers and how they want to purchase the media. But, his long term plans are clear: “For us, the fastest growing segment of our business is clearly digital and clearly digital services and ultimately Electronic Arts, at some point in the future… we’re going to be a 100 percent digital company, period. It’s going to be there some day. It’s inevitable.”

Meanwhile, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli is still rambling on about free to play. His recent comment that their company would be going 100% free to play was met with a collective grin and a shaking of heads. But he’s still going and I’m starting to think he’s serious. The model has shown much success in the multiplayer element, with DC Universe Online, the Star Trek MMO, and all those games your Facebook friends don’t care that you’re playing. But how would it be incorporated for a single player? Yerli is confident it will work: “We’ll figure out how to make a game like Crysis 3 work. If the proposition is, the gamer gets the games for free, well, that’s better for the gamer. And what’s best for the gamer is best for the industry.” Don’t get me wrong, I’d love some top shelf free games, but not at the expense of hundreds of dollars worth of microtransactions. But John Riccitello of EA convinced me, half-hyperbolically, that the plan is awful when he was trying to sell it to investors: “When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you’re really not that price sensitive at that point in time. So essentially what ends up happening, and the reason the play-first, pay-later model works nicely, is a consumer gets engaged in a property. They may spend ten, twenty, thirty, fifty hours in a game. And then, when they’re deep into a game, they’re well invested in it. At that point in time the commitment can be pretty high. It’s a great model and it represents a substantially better future for the industry.”

On the one hand I have to applaud some of these game and console makers, particularly Cevat Yerli, for their confidence and creativity. It’s refreshing to see an industry that’s being proactive about evolving in the current market, as opposed to the music industry’s flailing at the dawn of the digital age. On the other hand, I can’t help but think these kinds of announcements are seeing games turn into a service rather than a product.

Someday soon a foul-mouthed teenager is going to call me old fashioned because I like paying a set amount of money and receiving a specific product in return to use as I see fit. I totally understand the concept of paying for an “experience” rather than an item. I like roller coasters and concerts, though I’m probably getting too old for those as well. But games, to me, are sort of like books. Yes, I am paying for the experience of reading or playing, but I also like to put them in my collection, loan them to friends, and maybe revisit them sometime down the road. I’ve read The Grapes of Wrath nearly as many times as I’ve played the original Legend of Zelda. Both are sitting on a shelf or in a drawer in my home waiting for the next time I need to visit these old friends. I can’t help but compare that to the fun I’ve had with Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer. I’ve been told it’s not very good, but I’m not much of one for online play and I’ve enjoyed it. In five years I won’t be able to revisit the mode, or even get the best ending in single player, because the servers will be shut down. The PS3’s online support will likely no longer even exist. Maybe I am old and senile, but that’s sad.

If you can’t relate to that sentiment, think about those long boxes in your basement. Any time you want to re-read the the Infinity Gauntlet or that issue of Batman when he throws a car battery at a thug, you just have to blow off some dust. But if you’re buying Avengers vs. X-Men digitally, you’re counting on Marvel keeping those issues on the server long after you trade in your current phone. I want to be forward thinking and embrace the digital age, but I subscribe to cable and I buy blu-rays. Digital and cloud distribution is great, but let’s not do away with physical media. And Cevat, free to play works in some cases. But, please don’t push it into areas it doesn’t belong. I’d like to try your games for free with a demo and pay a set amount for the full experience, not find myself over the limit on my credit card because I made 12,000 smaller purchases instead of one at a reasonable price. “Free to play” is just too expensive.

Video Game Quick Hits – 6/29/12

Before we get started, be sure to vote on yur favorite cover for Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. Zombietron has the full story and the options, solo Mickey or Mickey with other Disney characters. Vote for your favorite at their Facebook and the winner will be the official cover. Of course, if they’re clever, they’ll just make it reversible like the Mass Effect 3 cover.

Meantime, more news:

Tecmo Koei has confirmed the Dead or Alive 5 Collector’s Edition, but so far it’s only in the UK. I’m certain it will make its way to North American shores though. If it does come across the pond, and it’s the same as announced for the Brits, it will include a set of swimsuits for the female characters, hardcover art book (soft-core porn), CD soundtrack, and a cast poster. In the meantime, preordering the game will give you the option to choose from two sets of bunny outfits. The Angels Pack provides bunny costumes for Kasumi, Lei-Fang and Hitomi. The Devils Pack will bunnify Christie, Tine and Ayane. Soon after this announcement, a new character, Rig, was revealed. Rig is a Canadian Tae Kwon Do expert. That makes 13 total fighters, a number I expect to increase before the game’s release in September.

You may have noticed a Mercenary Pack for Dust 514 on your PSN Store this week and wondered why. After all, the free to play shooter from CCP Games isn’t even out. There is a good reason. Buying the $20 pack will unlock about $50 worth of content in the full game, but it also guarantees you Beta access, starting this weekend. So what exactly do you get for the $20?

  • 4,000 Aurum ($20 USD value) – in-game currency for DUST 514
  • 30-day Active Skill Booster – increase earned Skill Points by 50%
  • “Dragonfly” Scout Dropuit – unique armor with unlimited use
  • “Toxin” ICD-9 Submachine Gun – unlimited use and custom skin
  • HK4M Shotgun X 50
  • Hacked Drop Uplink x 50 – create on-the-spot spawn points for teammates
  • Fused Locus Grenade x 50
  • 1.5dn Myofibril Stimulant x 50 – temporary melee damage boost
  • All Access Beta Pass – participate in every Beta Event, additional play sessions during off weekends

Over on the XBLA you may have noticed the launch of Kinect Central, along with the temporary promotion for a Kinect game, Haunt. Starting on Tuesday and ending Monday, July 2nd, Haunt is available for free. Wait a minute. Hasn’t Microsoft repeatedly told publishers that content can’t be free on XBLA? Anyway, I don’t even know if it’s any good, but it’s free so why not grab it. It’s not like you’re doing anything else with your Kinect.

With Bioware finally releasing the nearly 2GB Extended Cut of Mass Effect 3 earlier this week (review), they’re now hinting at the future DLC they’ve wanted to do all along. I suspect the days of free add-ons for the title are over. Then again, that depends on fan reaction to the Extended Cut. Producer Mike Gamble teased the next content via Twitter: “Would now be a good time to talk about how we’re doing more DLC in the future? That was a trick question. We’ll save the future DLC for future chats. Don’t worry though. There’s much more.” Naturally, eager fans have already scoured the Extended Cut’s code and discovered elements of an add-on apparently titled “Leviathan.” Plenty of script and dialogue from the chapter are included. All of that stuff is findable online, but I’m avoiding spoilers myself so I’m not even posting links in case I see too much in the effort.

After his appointment to CEO and president of Sony Corporation in April, it should come as no surprise that Kaz Hirai is stepping down from chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment. Hirai has spent many years with the company, working his way from sales in the music division to the new head of the entire corporation. His continued role at SCE was expected to be temporary during the transition. As CEO of Sony Corp. he will still have a part time position on the Sony Online Entertainment board. This coincides with Sony Chairman Howard Stringer leaving his own role on the same board. Also part of this management change is the appointment of SCE Japan’s president, Hiroshi Kawano, to the SOE board. Hirai’s time at SCE ushered in the age of PlayStation, one of the few segments of the company still performing well. It’s hoped that Hirai’s leadership will set the rest of organization down the same successful path.

I’m still a little disappointed that United Front Games is making LittleBigPlanet Karting instead of ModNation Racers 2, but a unified Play. Create. Share. enterprise simply makes more sense for the Sony brand. But I’m not so disappointed (or stupid enough to miss a good game) as to boycott the release. Which is why I’m signing up for the beta. And you can too. You can already sign up if you’re in the EU. In North America the sign-up isn’t quite ready yet, but we have been told to watch the PlayStation Blog closely as its launch is imminent.

A “retailer quiz” has been made available by Microsoft to educate retailers about the upcoming Halo 4. It’s kind of a weird concept, but it does reveal some details about the game. Apparently there are pages and pages of content, but most of it just hype, like “Halo 4 will be a huge blockbuster game this holiday that every gamer should play.” A few details that may interest fans do come from this though:

  • 10 new weapons
  • 2 new vehicles, “plus many of your favorites from the past”
  • “Improved support to create, organize and track groups” – read clan support
  • 10 multiplayer maps at launch, more to come
  • 50 Spartan Ops missions to be released per season, all with “high-quality” cinematics
  • First season free – 12 hours of gameplay, single-player or co-op

The first DLC for Max Payne 3 has been revealed, and Rockstar says it will be available July 3rd. “Local Justice” is included in the Rockstar Pass ($29.99), or will be available for $5.99 for the first week ($7.99 later). Buying the Rockstar Pass will also get you the “Disorganized Crime Map Pack,” “Deathmatch Made in Heaven” mode, “Hostage Negotiation Map Pack,” “New York Minute” co-op pack, “Painful Memories,” and “Trickle Down Economics Map Pack” as they release through summer and fall. The preorder bonus packs will also be available for purchase (or free with Rockstar Pass)on July 3rd, including: Cemetery Map ($1.99), Silent Killer Loadout Pack ($1.99), Pill Bottle Item ($0.99), Deadly Force Burst ($0.99), and Classic Max Payne Character ($0.99). The Local Justice pack includes

  • three new maps from the singleplayer endgame
  • 55th Battalion HQ map for all game modes
  • Imperial Palace and Departure Lounge maps for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer
  • Light Fingers Item for faster looting
  • M4 Assault Rifle with attachments
  • São Paulo Police Faction with avatar options

Official details are scarce, but it appears the Nuketown multiplayer map will be “reimagined for the future” as a preorder incentive for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. One of the most popular maps from the first game, the new version will be called Nuketown 2025. There is some indication that this will actually be just one part of a “limited edition map pack.” But, as I said, details are scarce so that could be incorrect. The game is scheduled for November 13, 2012.

The official party line from Microsoft is that they “have not made any announcements updating launch timing for Gears of War: Judgment beyond early 2013.” Apparently we should “Stay tuned for new details… to be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, July 12-15.” Be that as it may, the latest rumors are that Microsoft is looking at February 2013. We’ll have plenty of ‘bots covering Comic-Con so stay tuned to Big Shiny Robot! to get those details as soon as they drop.

I don’t tend to cover a lot sports games in VGQH, mostly because there’s too damn many of them. But, some of you may be interested, so take a look at the $100 Dynasty Edition of NBA 2K13. This pack will obviously include the game, but it also comes with a very pretty, full-sized Spalding basketball (designed by Art of Basketball), a set of Ink’d Skullcandy earbuds, and a textured Skinit controller skin. The price seems a little high for a game that gets released every year, but the bonus content is roughly retail value. The real question is whether you need a pretty basketball and a controller skin. The Ink’d earbuds are nice, I own a pair, but they’re fairly cheap to buy separately.

Sad news for those working in the gaming industry this week, as Prototype developers Radical Entertainment and parts of SEGA Europe were both closed. Radical, owned by Activision, was all but shuttered this week, with their parent company citing poor sales on Prototype 2 as the cause (only 250,000 units despite generally positive reviews). A few members of the staff will remain, providing supporting roles on other Activision projects. Over at SEGA, offices in Australia, Benelux, France, Germany, and Spain, are being closed as part of their ongoing restructure. Distribution in those territories will now be handled by SEGA London with help from third parties, Level03 Distribution and 5 Star Games.

Apparently Shaun and Ed had the right idea. At least according to Spanish developer Moonbite. They’ve recently announced Zombeer, a “first-person-survival-horror-comedy-shooter (FPSHCS).” The main character, K, wakes up after the zombie outbreak to find he’s been bitten but uninfected. How? Well because he’s hungover, of course. Apparently beer fends off the zombie virus. I always knew drinking was good for something. According to Moonbite’s CEO, Carlos Fernandez, the “team is very passionate about pop culture so the game proudly features many references to movies, comic books and games that we like.” Sounds great and I’d like to know more, but that’s all I’ve got for now. Apparently the game is planned for “HD consoles” by year’s end.

With XBLA’s Summer of Arcade being announced recently, it’s time for PSN to show off their Summer Sale. It’s a little unfair to compare the two though. SoA is all about new games, while PSN’s version is more about discounting older titles that have often been overlooked. Beginning July 3rd, Sony will be taking 30% (50% for PS+) off 12 games you really should play if you haven’t already:

  • Closure
  • Crysis
  • Infamous: Festival of Blood
  • Jurassic Park: The Game
  • Killzone 3 (Multiplayer)
  • NBA Jam: On Fire Edition
  • Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
  • Real Steel
  • Renegade Ops
  • Shadow of the Colossus HD
  • The House of the Dead III
  • Worms: Ultimate Mayhem

By now you’ve surely seen or heard about 007 Legends. Rather than focus the licensed game on just the next film in the franchise, this one will feature missions from six of the films, with their respective Bonds all being replaced by the current super-spy, Daniel Craig. To date, Skyfall (2012) and Moonraker (1979) have been confirmed. The latest reveal is the inclusion of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). The movie wasn’t bad, but it’s a good thing Lazenby is being replaced as he’s generally considered the worst 007, alongside Timothy Dalton. I’m looking forward to seeing the remaining films being included. The game is scheduled for October 16th.

That does it for the week, and also for the month of June. Check back Tuesday for the latest snapshots of gaming news – assuming I survive the Spartan Beast at Soldier Hollow this weekend.
