‘The Interview’ Is Coming to Netflix

Whether or not North Korea hacked Sony over their planned release of “The Interview”, it was still one of the biggest stories of 2014. Whatever the truth is, it hasn’t stopped people from making the movie somewhat of a hit during its video-on-demand and limited-release run. What would have likely been a lackluster film has been quite successful due to the controversy surrounding it, and if you were one of the people who didn’t buy into the hype, now’s your chance to check it out for free.

Netflix just announced that they will be offering the movie starting this Saturday, January 24. They also stated it would be exclusive to them, so it might be disappearing from the other VOD services around the same time. So if you don’t already pay for Netflix, it might be worth the $6 to check it out now, but if you’re like the millions of the rest of us, hopefully you saved some cash by waiting until it was available for free.

‘Doctor Who’ Not Leaving Netflix

Netflix is constantly changing the content they offer, and that means that some fan favorites fall in and out of rotation over time. Due to this, a lot of people were disappointed when it was announced that many popular shows, including “Doctor Who” would be leaving Netflix at the beginning of February. Some scrambled to binge watch as many as possible while others simply decided to stop trying and looked to other avenues to get their fix.

Today we learned that Whovians-in-the-making are getting a reprieve.

According to a report from Variety, Netflix has reached a deal with the BBC to keep many of their most popular shows available on the streaming service for the foreseeable future. Fans can look forward to catching up on “Doctor Who”, “Luther”, “The Office” and many others. Some shows didn’t make the cut, so if you still haven’t seen all of “Sherlock” or “Fawlty Towers”, you’ve got till the end of the month to finish them up.

Netflix Picks: ‘Video Games: The Movie’

Each Friday we will be bringing you weekend-viewing movie picks available for streaming on Netflix! From the popular to the obscure, we will browse Netflix’s Streaming library so you don’t have to, and bring you what we consider to be “Must Watch” selections!

“Video Games: The Movie” –  (7.5 out of 10)  – Directed by Jeremy Snead; Written by Jeremy Snead; Narrated by Sean Astin; Released July 18, 2014.

“Video Games: The Movie” delivers exactly what is promised by the title, 105 minutes of pure, concentrated, video game history and enough little tidbits for your gee-whiz file to dominate the gaming category at your local pub quiz. The documentary was produced by Zach Braff and narrated by Sean Astin doing his best Patton Oswalt impression.

The narrative begins mostly chronologically, beginning with the debate over the true father of video games. The answer seemingly varies depending on who you ask, but the documentary makes a pretty convincing case for a group of MIT students/employees in 1962 and their game “Spacewar.”

From there we move into the future. From Atari, to the NES; from the PlayStation to computer gaming and modern consoles we can see in stark reality the evolution of and progression of video games not only as a technology but as an art form.

Appearances and interviews with Zach Braff, Chris Hardwick, Wil Wheaton, Donald Faison, Ernie Cline (author of “Ready Player One”) and more, as well as industry experts offer insight into the behind the scenes world of games as well as nostalgic personal perspective. A common theme among those who grew up in the early days of gaming was the way they were captured by the concept of being able to interact with and manipulate images on the screen. Gaming took story telling from a passive experience to one that allowed for and ultimately required active participation.

I personally remember getting a Nintendo Entertainment System for my fifth birthday, it’s one of my earliest memories. I still own that console, and, on certain special days, when my feng shui is balanced and the planets aligned, it still works. The state of modern video games, with cloud storage, photo-realistic graphics, and simultaneous online multiplayer are so far beyond the dreams of that five year old kid that it would make his head spin. I never could have imagined that gaming would make it this far and because of the gradual progression over a few decades it’s easy to take it for granted.

By placing the complete history of video games into a compact narrative it makes one truly appreciate the fantastic rate at which the technology has progressed in a relatively short time.

Aside from an overarching narrative of video games, the documentary also takes some time to talk about a few important moments in their history including some pretty major snafus, specifically the “E.T.” game, (thanks a lot Atari) and the medium’s resurrection and savior Mario (thanks a lot Nintendo… for realsies).

There is no better testament to the fact that humanity was starved for digital entertainment then that our most beloved and enduring video game character is a poorly rendered mustachioed plumber.

By the time the doc gets to the end, you’ll have a proper understanding and respect for what it takes to make a game as well as for the almost magical rate at which the medium has improved. It is truly a marvel of modern technology and it seems the medium is here to stay.

Full disclosure, I had a little trouble getting through the whole thing, but only because half an hour in I really wanted to turn on my console and play something and if you ask me, that’s a success.

‘Daredevil’ Gets a Release Date

Marvel’s much-anticipated Netflix series are set to launch later this year and we finally have a date for their first show, “Daredevil.”

Over at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, Netflix announced during their press conference that all 13 episodes of “Daredevil” are set to drop on Friday, April 10. Because Netflix doesn’t have to worry about silly things like ad revenue and ratings, per se, they are always kind enough to release all the episodes in a series season at once, much to the delight of binge-watching geeks everywhere.

“Daredevil” stars relatively-unknown Charlie Cox as the titular character as well as Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosario Dawson and Deborah Ann Woll. “Daredevil” is the first of the Marvel series that are being developed for Netflix and will be followed with “AKA Jessica Jones”, “Luke Cage”, “Iron Fist”, and “The Defenders.”

‘Friends’ is Coming to Netflix

If you’re struggling to find a way to kick off next year your worries are over. On January 1, 2015 all ten sessions of “Friends” will be on Netflix! The first episode aired September 22, 1994 making this year the shows 20th anniversary. The series finale aired on May 6, 2004 giving the NBC hit series a ten year run. It is still considered to be one of the best television comedies to date.

To help get you in the mood for next year Netflix released this video of “The Rembrandts” singing the theme song to the show. Enjoy and “Toute de le fruit.”

Vincent D’Onofrio Cast as Kingpin

The Netflix show “Daredevil” added Vincent D’Onofrio in the role of Wilson Fisk, who is better known as The Kingpin in the Marvel Universe. It was announced by showrunner Stephen DeKnight via Twitter:

D’Onofrio is a talented character actor, starting from Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket,” in films like Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood” and most frequently on “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.”  This isn’t D’Onofrio’s first foray as a Marvel character. He also played Thor in “Adventures in Babysitting.”

D’Onofrio joins “Boardwalk Empire”s Charlie Cox on the show. Cox was cast as Matt Murdock/Daredevil on the show sometime last week.

“Daredevil” is a planned 13 episode series for Netflix, set to air via Netflix in 2015, and to tie into both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and another series teaming him with other heroes called “The Defenders.”

Charlie ‘Stardust’ Cox to Play ‘Daredevil’

Charlie Cox is Daredevil

Marvel has officially announced the casting of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in their upcoming Netflix Series of Daredevil. Charlie might best be known to genre fans for his lead role as Tristan Thorne in the big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. Not to be confused with Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories. Though it would be pretty funny if he played Matt Murdock as Woody Allen.

This comes on the heels of the announcement that Drew Goddard would not be the official show runner on the series.

In the official press release from Marvel:

Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed actor Charlie Cox has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Best known for his acclaimed work in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Stardust,” Cox will play Matt Murdock, the lead role in this all-new Marvel Television series.

Always the important thing to keep in mind when discussing Marvel properties for Film and Television is that they are two separate Entities, though there is some cross over. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is run by the imposing and regal Kevin Feige, while Marvel TV is run by Jeph Loeb of Heroes fame. They might share a common continuity, but the resources, vision and finances behind each are quite different.

‘Pokemon’ Is Coming to Netflix

Pokemon is coming to Netflix, more specifically the Indigo League seasons (Those are the episodes you’re nostalgic for with the original one hundred and fifty) and the Black & White seasons, which was the last series to premiere before the current X/Y generation episodes that are airing now.

Netflix will also have The Pokemon movies: Black – Victini and Reshiram, and White -Victini and Zekrom. Which are more or less the same film but with a variation based on which Pokemon you wanted to see.

Beginning Saturday, March 1st, Netflix members can instantly stream hours of awesome Pokémon animation! Don’t miss aspiring Pokémon Master Ash and his trusted Pokémon partner, Pikachu, as they embark on adventures through two popular seasons of the animated series and two action-packed feature films.

Netflix members can watch TV episodes from the Pokémon: Black & White season, where Ash and Pikachu traveled to the Unova region to discover new rivals, new challenges, and all-new Pokémon. The very first season of Pokémon animation, Pokémon: Indigo League, will also be available to stream instantly. The classic season introduces viewers to the world of Pokémon through Ash and Pikachu as Ash strives to become a Pokémon Master.

Pokémon fans can also catch Ash, Pikachu, and their friends in the dual movies Pokémon the Movie: Black—Victini and Reshiram and Pokémon the Movie: White—Victini and Zekrom. Watch as Ash must prove himself a hero to earn the help of the Legendary Reshiram—or Zekrom—to rescue the Mythical Pokémon Victini and save Eindoak Town. Two Legendary Pokémon…and two exciting versions of the story!

Visit Netflix today to watch exciting Pokémon adventures in TV and film!

With any luck this means that Pokemon will start becoming more and more available via streaming services rather then being locked down to TV broadcast like it currently is.

REVIEW: ‘House of Cards’ Episode 2.1

‘House of Cards’ Episode 2.1; (9 out of 10) Starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Kate Mara, Constance Zimmer, Sebastian Arcelus, Kristen Connolly; Directed by Carl Franklin, Written by Beau Willimon; A Netflix Original Series.

Netflix had a lot riding on ‘House of Cards.’ As it was the company’s first foray into the world of original programming, the political drama couldn’t afford to suck. Who knew that it was destined to become the type of series that could give cable networks like AMC, Showtime, and HBO a run for their money? Now that Netflix has become a contender in the world of original programming, it has ‘House of Cards’ to thank. If you have not taken the time to experience this brutal and intelligent tale of dirty politics in our nation’s capital, it’s time to rectify the situation.  Make sure you rectify it before you read on however, because there are some gargantuan spoilers ahead.

“We Don’t Talk About Birthdays.”

Normally, it might be odd to see a couple clothed entirely in black jogging through a park at night. For Frank and Claire Underwood (Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright), it’s as natural as seeing two lions stalking the Serengeti. The arrival of Frank’s birthday appears to have reinforced the Underwood’s survival instincts, and this opening scene clearly shows that the pair is not about to give up on their mutual quest for political power.

In case you’ve forgotten, Frank has accepted the role as vice president of the United States, a position that he earned through some brilliant and brutal political maneuvering, which included the murder of Peter Russo. Though the rest of the country believes that Russo’s death was a suicide, two loose ends remain—prostitute-turned-waitress Rachel Posner (Rachel Brosnahan), who got Russo drunk enough for Frank to kill him and cover his tracks; and the morally ambiguous reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara). With Frank’s sleazy-yet-somehow-noble right hand man Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) coercing Rachel into self-imposed exile, that just leaves Zoe—tons more on this later.

“Am I Really the Kind of Enemy You Want to Make?”

It’s a tough call, but Claire Underwood might be scarier than Frank. Robin Wright digs into the role with such cold, calculating detachment that it’s forever changed the way I watch “The Princess Bride.” While Frank pushes for his manifest destiny, Claire is facing litigation from Gillian Cole (Sandrine Holt), who is suing CWI for firing her on unlawful grounds. Rather than pursuing legal action of her own, Claire simply finds Gillian’s weakness—her pregnancy—and exploits the hell out of it. Claire tells Gillian, “I’m willing to let your child wither and die inside you if that’s what’s required.” Does the warmth not immediately withdraw from your blood? Even though Claire follows this statement by offering Gillian the reins to her entire non-profit organization, it doesn’t make Claire any less terrifying.

Certain moments of this episode imply that Claire is planning on having a baby of her own, which would explain why she wants to pass CWI off to Gillian. This has all kinds of potential, seeing as the spawn of Frank and Claire Underwood would surely bring about the apocalypse.

“Did You Think I’d Forgotten You?”

While Frank is preparing to assume the role of vice president, he’s selected Jackie Sharp (Molly Parker), a war veteran who Frank describes as “ruthlessly pragmatic.” I have a feeling that, though Frank assumes she’s in his pocket, Sharp has an agenda of her own. It will be interesting to see what unfolds in her future.

Now, I’ve been waiting the whole review to bring this up. If you’ve watched the episode, you know about the huge, tragic elephant in the room. If you haven’t, go watch it right now, because this next bit is too shocking not to experience on your own.

Zoe Barnes, being the ambitious reporter that she is, knows a bit too much about Russo’s “suicide.” When she meets up with Frank on a subway platform to gain some perspective on whether or not she was involved in a murder, Frank shoves her in front of an oncoming train. I cannot remember the last time a TV show rocked my world so spectacularly. I didn’t see this coming at all, and it’s a ballsy way to kick off the season.

A question that I have been puzzling over since re-watching the episode is this: Was Frank planning on killing Zoe the whole time? Or did he do it when he realized that she knew about Russo’s murder? It made me think of a conversation that Frank has with the proprietor of Freddy’s BBQ Joint about slaughtering pigs. When Freddy explains that the only humane way to slaughter a pig is to make it feel safe right before doing the deed, I swear there’s a glimmer of inspiration behind Frank’s eyes.

Despite the feelings of revulsion that are now associated with Frank Underwood (if they weren’t there already), the final scene showcases how perfect Kevin Spacey is for this role. Throughout the whole episode, Frank has avoided his signature conversations with the audience. During the last few minutes of the episode, as he’s looking at his reflection in the mirror, his eyes dart to the camera. “Did you think I had forgotten you? Perhaps you wish I had.” He continues his soliloquy about the attainment of power in a “hunt or be hunted” world, and the camera focuses on the cufflinks he has received as a gift. They’re his initials, which are of course F.U. He’s welcoming the audience back to his world and telling them to f**k off at the same time.

Brilliant.

Verdict:

The episode kicked off a lot of storylines that are destined to intertwine and get ugly, so there was a lot of skipping around to Frank, to the President, to Zoe and her team—all understandable and necessary, but it was a lot of information to take in. It had to be done at some point, and the fact that they’re lining up their potential material that quickly is a good sign—the dominos have to be set up before they come tumbling down.

And I can’t gush enough about the death of Zoe Barnes. In a lot of ways it sucks because I feel like she was on the path to redeeming herself from all the crummy things she did in the first season. However, it’s an explosive way to begin a new season, and I respect it when a show delivers a sucker punch like that.

The episode was also short on giving Christina Gallagher (Kristen Connolly) screen time. Of course, since she embodies everything that is good and pure in Washington D.C., it made sense that she didn’t have much to do in this episode. She’s destined to be the underdog that just might bring Frank Underwood’s reign toppling down, so here’s hoping they don’t throw her in front of a train too.

STAR WARS: ‘The Clone Wars’ Comes to Netflix

“The Clone Wars” is coming to Netflix and it’s coming a lot faster than you’d think. March 7, 2014 is less than a month away.

Lucasfilm announced a deal this morning that will bring us not just thirteen episodes of the so-called “bonus content” episodes that were to comprise season six, they’re giving us the entire “Clone Wars” saga as well as the movie on Netflix, making this incredible show available to a whole new audience.

This is the first time any official “Star Wars” content has made its way to Netflix, and lets hope it’s just the beginning. This is a big deal for Netflix. It’s getting harder and harder for its competitors to characterize it as a wasteland of content that no one wants to watch and straight to video releases. They have a track record of seeking out the best of the best and this is just one more feather in their cap.

From the official StarWars.Com blurb;

In these eagerly anticipated episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, some of the deepest mysteries of the conflict between the light and the dark sides of the Force are revealed. An intrepid clone trooper discovers a shocking secret, Anakin Skywalker’s closest relationship is tested to its limits, and what Master Yoda discovers while investigating the disappearance of a Jedi could forever change the balance of power in the galaxy. Fans will not only be able to watch the thrilling finale, they’ll be able to see more of Star Wars: The Clone Wars than ever before as Netflix will also stream the director’s cut of seasons one to five.

Stars Wars is one of the most iconic franchises of all time and this series joins a long line of Disney content that Netflix members are and will continue to enjoy for years to come,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer. “The Clone Wars marks an important moment as Netflix welcomes more and more first-run content from The Walt Disney Company and its subsidiaries.”

Now, the important thing to note here is how many episodes we are getting. Thirteen “lost missions.” Add to that the four episodes that Darth Maul was to have appeared in that will now be coming through Dark Horse Comics, and there’s still plenty of potential content unaccounted for.

I wonder if there’s still more we’ll be seeing, though it just won’t be via Netflix.

Be sure to check back here and listen to Full of Sith for the latest.
