Kick-Ass in Pre-Production
By Bryan Young on May 13, 2008 in Comics Movies NewsComic Books Resources is reporting the following:
I can confirm that “Kick-Ass” has gone into preproduction. The script, based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr’s “Kick-Ass” creator-owned comic from Marvel, is written by Stardust team Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. Directed by Vaughn, it’s been fully financed from his MARV Films company. All that’s currently needed is a studio to distribute the finished movie, which won’t exactly be too hard to find when “Wanted” hits. And when news breaks on a certain actor they have lined up…
And look forward to other movies from Mark Millar’s canon from MARV Films in the near future.
This is good news for robot nerds like us across the board. I really liked what Vaughn did with Gaiman’s Stardust. Since it seems as though he’s not doing Thor (which is a little disappointing) this is like the next best thing.
Uwe Boll Petition Sponsered
By Lucas Ackley on May 12, 2008 in Movies News![]() |
Remember the Uwe Boll Petition? There are more people that hate his movies than I thought. Strident has now joined the battle, and has offered to give away One Million free packs of Trident gum to the million people who sign the petition. Pretty awesome if you ask me. Here’s a snippet from Trident:
“Since gamers are one of our most supportive groups, we’ve been looking for ways to return the favor,” said Gary Osifchin, Stride North American Marketing Director. “And what better way is there to get gamers’ backs than by helping them rescue their cherished videogames from the clutches of Uwe Boll ?”
In order to receive a free pack of gum, the petition has to hit one million signatures by May 14th. So get to it!
THE X-FILES TRAILER (trash?)
By big-shiny-robot on May 12, 2008 in Movies NewsHere it is.
Meh.
I want to see the Cigarette Smoking Man and Skinner and maybe some Agent Krycek. Not to mention lots and lots of Gillian Anderson nudity. This movie looks like it’s going to be about 6 years too late.
Not to mention the subtitle is horribly, horribly pretentious.
Ghostbusters the Game
By Lucas Ackley on May 12, 2008 in Movies News Video GamesHoly shit. This game was announced in November or so through an exclusive with GameInformer Magazine. I’ve been following the news for this game rather closely. Here’s what I can tell you so far:
- Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd are returning to write the script for this game.
- Everyone is returning to voice the Ghostbusters, even Janine.
- This game is being treated as Ghostbusters 3. It will follow a few years after Ghostbusters 2.
- You will play as the new hire. Basically the intern that gets to test all the new equipment Egon and Ray are too afraid to try. The Slime Gun is some of the new gear (featured in the video below).

On Friday GameTrailers.com did an episode dedicated to the new game. A lot of new information was released, including an Ecto H20. It sounds like the basic plot will follow the lost script for Ghostbusters 3. Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know. In a nut shell, this is what I know about the Script:
There is no vacancy in Hell. All the ghosts that would be sent to purgatory or Hell are spilling back onto Earth. Somehow the containment unit fails (possibly because of Walter Peck, since the actor is returning to voice him) and all our favorite ghosts return. The timing couldn’t possibly be worse, because the boys in khaki are trying to turn Ghostbusting into a franchise. But they have Walter Peck watching their every step as New York’s designated dick less wonder.
The first level of the game is a recap of the first movie. Stay Puft and Slimer return to haunt the same places you had originally busted them. Apparently Gozer makes a return as well. Later in the plot, the Ghostbusters will be entering another dimension, and possibly Hell.
The video below is 5 minutes of game play, previously unseen. For more information on the game, check out Proton Charging for all of your bustin’ news. I’ll continue to do updates on BSR! as I get them.

Mothers Day Special: The Top 10 Mothers from Nerd-dom
By Bryan Young on May 11, 2008 in Comics Movies News TelevisionIn honor of Mother’s Day, I’ve compiled here a list of 10 mothers from the world of nerd-dom and why they were great. Maybe not great mothers, but great in comics, films and TV anyhow.
10) Stephanie Brown – Number 10 on the list is the Spoiler, from the Bat-family of comics. Even though she was the fourth Robin, she mothered a child early in the Robin series and had the maturity to give it up for adoption because she knew she was too young and still wanted to pursue a career as a crime-fighter. |
9) Maureen Robinson – Lost In Space was one of those shows that I would watch as a young robot quite a bit. I thought I might have been able to learn something from the Robot on the show. I didn’t. But one thing I did learn was how important mother’s could be to the dynamic of a mission. Played by June Lockheart, who doesn’t remember wanting to be 10 years old and Lost in Space? |
8 ) Shmi Skywalker – Shmi Skywalker immaculately conceived the nicest little boy in the galaxy who, in turn, turned into the most evil badass in the galaxy. She was able to let her son go to fulfill his destiny, whatever that may have been, even though that in the end it meant she was going to be gang raped by Tusken raiders. |
7) Mystique – Mystique is actually one of the most prolific mothers on the list. Having birthed both Nightcrawler and a son with Sabretooth, Mystique also acted as foster mother to Rogue. Yeah, maybe she was a terrible mother, but her birth canal was in the right place at the right time, I suppose. |
6) Hippolyta – The mother of Wonder Woman and the matriarch of Amazonian society, Hippolyta represents everything there is about strong female characters in the history of nerd-dom. She could certainly kick the asses of all of our dads, robots or otherwise, with one fell swoop of her Amazonian sword. |
5) Kee – Children of Men was one of the best sci-fi movies to come out in a very long time. Those of you too stupid to remember or that made the mistake of skipping this one, Children of Men is about a world where everyone is infertile. No one can have children and that’s what makes it so astounding when Kee is pregnant. She’s a strong and interesting character, shepherded on her journey by the always astounding Clive Owen. |
_
4) Martha Kent – Arguably, the mother of nerd-dom Mothers, Ma Kent was the driving force of insistence that lead to the Kent’s adoption of Kal-el, nee young Clark. Over the years as his power developed she nurtured his morals and sewed his costumes, knowing that the world needed a hero more than she needed her son safe from harms way. In fact, as bad as the Doomsday arc was, the most heartbreaking moments in it involved Ma Kent’s anonymous presence at his funeral service. |
3) The Queen Alien – “Get away from her, you bitch!” is probably one of the best lines in the Aliens franchise, and it’s because the Queen Alien has so much personality and character infused into it by Cameron’s direction and Stan Winston’s practical suit. But she’s arguably the most bad-ass mother on our Mother’s day list. |
2) Aunt May – I know she’s not a mother, but she’s practically a mother to Peter Parker. And I’m not sure which incarnation of Aunt May we’re talking about, but the one I like the most is Ultimate Aunt May. She’s less a 75 year old geriatric case and more feisty 50 year old. But in any incarnation of her, she’s a wonderful old lady and everyone has a relative (I’m sure) that reminds them of the kind sweetness of Spider-Man’s aged aunt. |
1) Padme Amidala – Padme went from Queen, to Senator/Action hero, to mother in the arc of the Star Wars prequels. And whatever your feeling toward the prequels, no mother in nerd-dom had children that affected nerd-dom as much as hers. Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are two of the most iconic characters in the history of film and their birth was a key turning point in what I consider to be a great film. The fact that she gave her life during child-birth adds a level of sacrifice that made me want to put her at the top of this list more than the others. (That, and I really, really like Star Wars.) |
If anyone has anything to add do it below. If you feel someone on the list shouldn’t be, let me know that, too. And thinking about it, I wonder if there’s any Mother’s from video game’s I’ve missed….

Iron Man Secret Brain Trust
By Lucas Ackley on May 8, 2008 in Movies News![]() |
Since the release of Iron Man, a few comic creators have come forward to talk about their involvement with the Iron Man movie. Bendis was the first to come forward:
I totally wrote some of it!!!!
fuck! i’ve been holding that in for a year!!
last philly show, i get a mysterious late night call from marvel’s kevin feige. he drops the scoop on me that sam jackson is coming in to do a cameo the next day but they have no dialogue.
kevin told me a couple of scenarios, something they were thinking of teasing and asked if i could do a solid and shoot some lines at him.
i sent about three pages of stuff. and they picked what worked for them and… ta daa!!
god damn!! that was so cool!
now, for the record, i’m not taking credit for the scene, i didn’t think of the scene or get sam jackson to do that. but it was very cool to have a bit in the movie. it just was!!
and now i’m officially allowed to brag!
before the iron man movie was set to film but way into active pre production, i, and others, got a super secret call asking if we’d read the iron man script as it existed and come to the set for what is now referred to as the iron man brain trust. we were hand picked by jon f. and kevin f. for our unique takes on the character.
i was there, mark millar, axel, joe, tom and a few others who may or may not want me airing thier biz. we were flown out and brought to the stages which were the howard hughes spruce goose warehouses. (which in itself was awesome)
we were brought through the sets and the armor as they were being built and met the entire staff. all of which was filmed for the dvd. i have no idea if it will make it in. i half hope it doesn’t. i wasn’t my usual glam self.
we then sat in a big room with the marvel guys and jon f. all day and went through everything. we talked about everything. every inch of it. we looked at the spx houses demo reels audtioning for the job. and yes the best reel got the gig, obviously.
truth told. the script was in pretty damn good shape at this stage. but that wasn’t the point. the point to me is a good idea is a good idea and a bad one is a bad one, doesn’t matter where it came from. there is a lesson here.
irregardless of my participation… the fact that this brain trust was even created showed such intense respect for the character and it’s legacy. a half hour into the meeting i was so happy to be in the room i was going to burst. comic creators not being treated like the second class porn peddlars we used to treated like but actual writers. it was very cool.
Mark Millar had this to say:
Just got word this is no longer a secret so prepare for some Braggy McBraggy. But as Bendy has written on his board this morning, we can finally talk about one of the coolest things to happen in our careers. Completely out of the blue, when the script was still in the early stages, we got a call from Jon Faverau to fly out to the beginnings of what would be the Iron Man set and do a little script consultancy work…
The brian-trust was all people involved in Iron Man to some extent at the time and hand-picked by Fav. This was me (because ULTIMATE Tony was a big influence on the film), BB, Joe Q, Tom Brevoort, Axel Alonso and Ultimates editor Ralph Macchio. We signed an official secrets thing after reading the script (which I swear I somehow managed not to ever tell anyone about) and got to work on this little baby over a couple of days. It was genuinely thrilling and we not only got a look around the caves which we were being built out there in the California desert, but also got to see some of the early ILM test stuff (a lot of which never made it to the finished movie).
That said, the most exciting part of the trip was rolling up our sleeves and getting into the plot. As Bendy said, Faverau didn’t get us out there to just high-five the guy. He wanted us to be brutal and honest and I have to say I almost crossed the line when I talked ’em out of The Mandarin, who was in the original draft, and there was a terrible silence in the room for about ten seconds until Fav agreed and we all got talking about beefing up the Obadiah Stane/ Iron Monger thing (originally planned for the sequel). The whole crew were gracious, very respectful of Marvel East’s input and— best part— paid us for our troubles. I’ve known for about sixteen months how great this movie was going to be and it was so thrilling to see the whole thing come to life up there at the London Premiere last week.
This Secret Trust really helps to understand why Iron Man worked so well. We can only hope that they have taken The Incredible Hulk as seriously as this.
Scarlett Johansson makes the mistake of her life!
By Jason Young on May 7, 2008 in Movies News![]() |
Scarlett Johansson has just made the mistake of her life!
She has announced her engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds, who I find to be a horribly annoying actor. (Blade 3 was especially God-awful). I find this news particularly disparaging because I had always planned on wooing that ass myself.
I would like to clear up any confusion she might have right here on the blog. The law simply states that you shouldn’t date robots, not that you can’t.
On the positive side, she is acting in another Woody Allen movie that is due out this year called “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and it is rumored to depict her and Penelope Cruz making out. I guess that’ll take the edge off a little bit.
