Ghostbusters Update

Alright sports fans, time for a little run down on some recent happenings in the Ghostbuster’s community. We’ll kick it off with the biggest story revolving around Bill Murray and possible spoilers.

Bill Murray sat down with the UK’s Mail Online to talk about Fantastic Mr Fox. Of course Ghostbusters 3 comes up:

I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.

The first 45 minutes of the original Ghostbusters is some of the funniest stuff ever made. The second one was disappointing, because the special-effects guys took over. I had something like two scenes – and they’re the only funny ones in the movie.

Personally I’m taking this news with a grain of salt. This has been a rumor for a long time, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Murray was just throwing out curve balls. Plus, what sense does it make for him to be a ghost if he hated the restrictions of the special effects in the second movie. Moving on…

Looking for a kick-ass background for your iPhone, check out some of Glennz artwork. Samples included below:

Lost Gozer costume found in a surplus store of all places. Sounds like they are going to restore it to its original condition. There’s a thread on GB Fans following the story.

And last but not least, a little fan film by The New Hampshire Ghostbusters. It’s got a Proton Pack in it, that means it has to be awesome.

As always, thanks to ProtonCharging.com for their dedication to Ghostbusters fans over the years. They’re our news source for the latest on Ghostbusters.

UPDATED: Updates and Confirmations on Marvel Casting!

An incredibly trusted and wise source of Big Shiny Robot!s has consulted his trusted and wise source at the Marvel/Paramount camp about the recent flurry of casting rumours that have plagued the internet in the last week (yes, we’re guilty, too.)

Here is what our good friend had to say:

According to MY studio guy, the rumors about Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) and other unknowns/television actors reading for Cap are true.

Apparently, when the script came in with World War II sequences (featuring the Invaders), the studio heads decided it was beyond their means to make this movie AND afford A-listers like Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

Sure sounds like everyone’s high on McPartlin, who evidently just lost out on the Superman role to Brandon Routh.

As for Spidey, the Logan Lerman rumors are just that … rumors. Apparently Sony is waiting for James Vanderbilt’s script to come in (he’s balking on whether Peter Parker is still in school or just out). And they haven’t even come to terms with director Marc Webb yet.

So it seems as though pretty much all the rumours about Cap have been true, and the rumours regarding Spider-Man have been bunk.

In any case, there’s been a lot of news about Captain America coming out of the floodgates from Joe Johnston as well, and his take on the character, the costume, and the story was actually pretty interesting.  He said that the classic Cap costume in the film appears because they use Cap as a USO publicity tool, but Steve has that desire to lead and tries to ditch the costume, but realizes the worth of it when he notices that it’s an effective tool as a symbol of leadership.  So he begins to shape the costume into something more akin to the present-day Cap costume.  It’s a take on the character and the costume I’ve never heard, but I’m actually pretty in love with.

Also, he says the Red Skull is the villain, which isn’t a huge surprise, but interesting to get a confirmation of nonetheless.

In any case, check back here frequently for all the news that’s fit to print!

UPDATE:  A lot of sites are running quotes to our piece here and saying “The top three choices for Cap are these guys”.  This article says no such thing.  These guys read for the part.  That’s all our man said.  We have no idea who’s at the top of the list, but these three have read for it.

Daredevil Reboot Has A Writer

Because we’ve all been waiting for it right? Wait no, no we haven’t. But since the Hulk did good lets try it again. From The Hollywood Reporter.

The long-talked-about “Daredevil” reboot finally made its first step forward Friday, with scribe David Scarpa being tapped to pen a story for the Fox/Regency adaptation of the Marvel hero.

After seeing how Marvel resurrected green-skinned hero Hulk only five years after an initial movie, Fox decided to attempt the same with Daredevil. In 2008, Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman said in an interview with IESB that the studio was thinking about a reboot, though he added, “this is the movie business — nothing is soon.”

Peter Chernin will be one of the producers on the pic.

The plan is to see what kind of script Scarpa comes up with. He wrote “The Day the Earth Stood Still” for Fox as well as the DreamWorks thriller “The Last Castle.” If Fox and Regency like what they see, the next step will be to attach a director.

Yup the asshole who wrote The Day the Earth Stood Still’s remake script is in charge of your beloved Daredevil. How does that make you feel? I bet not awesome. With Hollywoods new trend I bet it will even be in 3D. I wish I was kidding.

Chad Michael Murray as Cap?

 chad-michael-murray

Chad Michael Murray is the latest name to be rumoured for the coveted role of Captain America that rightfully belongs to Matt Damon.  I have seen nothing he’s been in and have no idea who he is.

This is a stretch, I know…  but we’re running this purely as a rumour and that’s all it is at this point.

I got some info from an anonymous fellow who frequents some forums that some of us Robot’s visit.

This is what he had to say:

So I work in a place outside of LA where some celebrities frequent. Chad Michael Murray is one of these people. He was in the other night and one of his friends with him told me that the casting for Cap is down to Chad and one other person. He didn’t tell more who the other person is perhaps he didn’t know, but I found it interesting. The friend told me that he’d have to lend Chad all his comics and teach him about the background of the character.

Not a ton of info, but I thought you guys might find it interesting.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Personally, I still want Matt Damon to play him.

What do you guys think?

UPDATE: The fact that he’s reading for the role has been confirmed.  Check out our article about it here.

Is Iron Man 2 a Prequel to The Incredible Hulk?

With a very special thanks to our good friend Jeff Vice, the film critic at the Deseret News, we were pointed out to an article on Empire Magazine’s website that has some pretty compelling evidence (granted, it’s via twitter) that the Iron Man sequel is in all actuality an Incredible Hulk prequel of some kind.

And we all know how much I love prequels…

From their story:

Now, we don’t often indulge idle speculation here at Empire, but something Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau said today on his Twitter feed has sparked our imagination, and could be a major reveal in terms of the plot of The Avengers movie.

Favreau retweeted a question from a follower, who asked ‘Does ‘Iron Man 2’ take place before or after Hulk movie?’ Favreau succinctly replied, ‘Before’.

They went on to speculate that this validates the theory that Hulk is going to be the bad guy.  Jeff Vice further speculated to us:

And if they’re following existing Avengers continuity, 616 at least, that means Loki is the real villain, since he sets Hulk up for the fall.

What do you guys think?

Logan Lerman Being Considered for Peter Parker

 loganlerman

Access Hollywood sat down and talked to 18-year-old actor, Logan Lerman, the star of the upcoming Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (he also was in 3:10 to Yuma, Gamer, and The Butterfly Effect). During the interview, Lerman revealed that he is currently “in talks” to play the titular role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot:

“There have been a few discussions, it’s definitely something I’m looking into,” Logan told Billy on Thursday.

“It’s one of my favorite characters ever and I’m a huge fan of the series,” he continued. “I’d love to have more conversations about it. I’m definitely very interested in it.”

The “Percy Jackson” star explained that the interest in him playing Spider-Man was “vice versa,” and that both he and the studio have expressed interest.

“It’s just, you know, conversations are starting. It’s a long process with the studio and the producers and everything. But it’s definitely a project that I’m really interested in, of course,” he told Billy. “I’d love to focus on the human element a little bit more. It’d be such a fun experience.”

So there you have it folks. I think we may have our first official hat in the ring for our new Spider-Man. I remember him from 3:10 to Yuma and The Butterfly Effect and I don’t remember him being bad by any means. What do all of you think of this potential casting?

Captain America Casting May Be Drawing Near

 captainamericatribute

Scifiwire.com talked to The First Avenger: Captain America director, Joe Johnston, about starting production on our Star Spangled Avenger’s (good) feature film debut. Here’s what he had to say:

“We need to cast it soon,” Johnston said. “We have a very short list, but we’re still juggling actors here. I’d say within the next couple of weeks we’ll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope.”

As for who will actually play Cap, Johnston either ain’t saying or can’t yet say. Rumored actors include everyone from Will Smith to Aaron Eckhart to John Barrowman.

As for when the movie will shoot? Johnston said the movier is still “fairly early” in preproduction. Shooting won’t start until the end of June, he said, “but we’re getting ready to go to the U.K., it looks like.”

Hopefully we will be getting news of who will be playing Cap in the coming weeks (more likely months)! Personally, I’m excited to get more details.

The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a July 22, 2011 release.

Sound off in the comments! Who do you think would make a good Captain America?

DVD REVIEW: The House of the Devil

Out this coming week on DVD is the independent horror film, “The House of the Devil”, written, directed and edited by Ti West, who, by the looks of it, is as avid a fan of the horror genre as one can get. Before I get into my review any further, here’s the synopsis of the film:

Sam (Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby. Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Noonan and Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creaky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss. Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life…

and the “>trailer

Now, before I saw this DVD roll into the BSR offices, all I knew about it was from the trailer I saw a few months ago. Unfortunately, the movie came and went without my knowledge, and I missed the chance to see it in the theater…I am an idiot. And hopefully, with this DVD review, my sin will be forgiven and my soul will not be damned to the darkness of a James Wanian abyss; but rather, allowed to ascend into the celluloid heavens without blemish. Truly, I am upset that I missed “The House of the Devil” in theaters, and if I weren’t reviewing this DVD for Big Shiny Robot, I may have missed it altogether. And with a horror movie of this caliber, that would have been a shame. Have I made myself clear? Am I being sufficiently blunt?

“The House of the Devil” is a beautifully crafted film with the characters, plot, tension and dialogue you don’t normally see in a Horror film of this era. That is not to say I haven’t enjoyed any of the recent outings of the horror genre. But writer/director, Ti West has made a film that perfectly embodies the phrase, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” And let me tell you, the journey was fucking terrifying. West knows that true horror doesn’t come from filling every frame with slashing daggers, or haunting shadows of mystery assailants; and I wasn’t bombarded by slamming doors or cats jumping out from darkened corners. Instead, West relies on foreboding dialog, a charmingly naive female lead, and the ability of the human mind to concoct any number of horrifying scenarios that could occur in a house so creepy, so off the beaten path and occupied by the creepiest nice people ever…you know the type.

As I watched this film, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the storytelling techniques Hitchcock used to define character and build tension. The tension, oh, the tension in this movie was palpable! Ti West teases the audience with every music cue, line of dialogue, editing and lighting choice to build a level of tension so great and drawn out that one is almost driven to the point of insanity themselves. “The House of the Devil” is a must see movie for those who love the horror genre and cinema as a whole. Seriously, buy it, netflix it, enjoy it. “The House of the Devil” is worthy of your precious DVD shelf space.

Lucasfilm Tackling Musical Fairies?

It would seem so.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, George Lucas is producing a CGI animated musical featuring faeries.

It’s being directed by Kevin Munroe, who directed the slightly underrated CGI Ninja Turtles movie a few years back.

A lot of people are probably going to be laughing at this news, but there isn’t a lot of news there.  There’s a film in production, it has fantasy elements.  The director is competent, the producer has an excellent track record, doubly so if the story originates with him.

Personally, I’m excited to get more details.

Avatar sinks Titanic

While inflation, the price of 3-d tickets are not factored into the equation, Avatar has surpassed Titanic as the top grossing film of all time.

Now before you get on a soapbox to praise or condemn the movie  (nobody cares) realize that highest grossing doesn’t mean “best” nor does it mean that the general movie going is wholly  comprised of mouth breathing neanderthals who are dazzled by any shiny object placed before them. (Though the latter point is debatable) It just means it made more money than Titanic.

One thing I do hope Hollywood learns from this is that action/adventure movies do indeed benefit from story as much as they do from spectacle.  While Cameron’s vision of Pandora and it’s inhabitants was beautifully rendered, I think you’d be a fool to call them “original” as if that word has any meaning in artistic venues anymore, even less original was the story itself but the fact that he clearly paid equal attention to the visuals and the story on a technical level is why the movie went over as well as it did in my opinion.  See Jurassic Park 2 in IMAX 3-D and it will suck in IMAX 3-D.

News like this encourages me in a world where you can watch a movie nearly anytime or anyplace, proper movie theaters are doing quite well and I hope they continue to do so.
