Comic-Con Teaser: ‘The Goon’

MTV has revealed the tease “trailer” for footage that will be shown at Comic-Con!

Movie TrailersMovies Blog

Based on the cult comic from Dark Horse Entertainment, created by Eric Powell in 1999, the comic follows the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The stories have a paranormal and comedic edge to them and concern ghosts, zombies, mad scientists and “skunk apes.”

My exposure to “The Goon” is pretty limited, but from this clip the animation looks amazing to me. They really captured the artistic style of the comic, but I’ll leave it up to you Goon fans to debate with the “feel” of the comic is there in this short teaser!

The screenplay for ‘The Goon’ is by Eric Powell and stars the voice of Paul Giamatti as Frankie. No release date has been set.

New ‘Thor’ Photo Shows a Little Asgard

Last week a new photo from Thor was released featuring Odin, Thor, and Loki. This week, a new photo has been released – this one from a scene in Asgard in which Thor is being banished to the shit-hole that is Earth.

Apparently, there has been a lot of lash-back from the photo released last week; a lot of people don’t like it saying the colors are too bright, it looks cheesy, etc. Personally, I don’t think it looks bad at all, and director Kenneth Branagh has said there will be distinct looks between the “real world” and Asgard. I think everything is looking fine and I am still looking forward to this movie – perhaps all of these fanboys out there crying that they hate it should wait until at least a trailer with actual footage is out instead of already getting their expectations way too high – you know, try not being a whiny bitch of a fan boy.

I’m all for hearing other opinions on these images, but Judas, you should read some of what’s being said – calm down kids, calm down.

X-Men: First Class Has A Mystique

Coming to us from Heat Vision the movie now has cast Mystique with Jennifer Lawerence. Another person I’ve never heard of, but she’ll probably be covered in blue rubber and body paint for the entire movie so does it really matter? Heres an excerpt from Heat Vision:

Jennifer Lawrence, the actress who’s been getting rave reviews for her work in “Winter’s Bone,” has been cast as Mystique in Fox’s “X-Men: First Class.”

Fox has been furiously casting the movie, which focuses on Marvel’s superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation than the previous trilogy.

Matthew Vaughn has been casting a slew of younger actors to play opposite James McAvoy, who is playing Professor Charles Xavier, and Michael Fassbender, who is portraying Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto. Nicholas Hoult, Alive Eve, and Caleb Landry Jones are among those playing mutants looking for mentor figures and teachers to guide them with their powers. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain, whose identity has not been revealed, as the studio keeps plot details under lock and key.

Talk about how awesome or lame this is in the BSR FORUM.  Also WTF? Kevin Bacon?

First Pic of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern!

From the Forum: Jonathan Nolan to Direct Superman Reboot?

Substance Dii from the BSR! Forum brought this little bit of Superman rumor to the table earlier today, so I thought I’d do some poking around about it.

Geek Tyrant is the one who initially broke the story/rumor that Chris Nolan’s little brother Jonathan may be the unannounced director of the Superman reboot.

According to our sources, Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan is currently the unannounced director of the Superman reboot film. Word on the lot is that he is attached to direct the film, and has been on the studio lot working on pre-development stuff.

Of course, this actually makes a lot of sense, because even though this would be the first film Jonathan Nolan has ever directed -and Superman is a big one to come in on- the studio is probably comforted by the fact that Christopher Nolan will be there “mentoring” him throughout as reported earlier this year.

The Geek Tyrant story also mentions that the studio has already started auditioning actors for the film, and it sounds like NBC’s Chuck star, Zachary Levi (below) auditioned for “a role” – but he looks awfully Clark Kent-ish to me. There’s nothing to be said about him being a front-runner or anything like that.

Of course, WB has not come forward and confirmed any of this, so for now this stays a rumor – but it will be interesting to see if they have anything to announce at the upcoming Comic-Con. . .

Is Mark Ruffalo the New Hulk?

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that they have “learned” that Mark Ruffalo is in “late-stage” discussions to replace Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in The Avengers movie.

He’s always been an actor’s actor and is getting critical raves in Focus Features’ The Kids Are All Right which oepned last weekend. But I’ve learned that he’s now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of The Avengers ensemble.

Of course, file this away in your “rumor file” for now (as always), but there’s no debating this guy is a really good actor. It might be hard to envision this guy as an “action star”, but considering the likelyhood of all his action-screen time would be done by a giant “hulking” (LOLZ, Punny!) CG version of him, I think he could do it. He’d make a great Banner I think, so I hope there is some truth to this. That, and I have never heard any reports of Ruffalo being an ass on the set of a movie.

Head on over to the BSR! Forum and discuss all the Hulk drama and share your thoughts on the possibility of Mark Ruffalo filling Norton’s shoes!

The New Mary Jane?

Blink and you’ll miss them, but the internet and Twitter has actually been a-buzz about a relatively unknown actress by the name of Elena Satine who has been rumored to have auditioned -and now campaigning- for the part of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Apparently she has tweeted a lot about it, but unfortunately, her Twitter account is now a protected account.

Satine, from what I can tell, hasn’t really had any major roles, just some bit-parts on TV shows such as Cold Case and the new version of Melrose Place. But, it does look like she has some sort of (assumably minor) role in the upcoming Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy, Just Go With It, due out some time next year.

I know most of us here at BSR! are in agreement that Kirsten Dunst was a terrible Mary Jane, from her look to her acting. Personally, not once did I feel any chemistry between Dunst’s MJ and McGuire’s Peter Parker in any of the Spider-Man films, which is too bad. As far as this Elena Satine goes, she really has the look of a Mary Jane Watson, no doubt about that, but with anything it comes down to if she can act – she may be the exact image of MJ from the comic books to some people, but if she can’t act the part and create some chemistry, her looks don’t matter much.

Take another look at her more “modeling” picture above, and below I posted a more “girl-next-door” picture – and you can find many more over at her IMDB page. I really like her look, and I hope this is the direction they take the character, I just hope they make sure she’s got the acting chops!

So, what would you think, based on her look, of Elena Satine as the next Mary Jane? Who would you like to see cast as MJ in the upcoming reboot? Take your thoughts to the Big Shiny Robot Forum, or leave a comment below!

New ‘Thor’ Photo Featuring Odin, Loki, and Thor!

The LA Times has posted an article on their site confirming that (sigh) Thor and Captain America will be being released in 3D along side the standard not-3D. But, more importantly, as you can see above, they released a pretty sweet picture featuring Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor!

As far as the 3D goes, Marvel seems to be pretty excited about it, but neither Thor nor Captain America were/are shot using 3D cameras – which means they will be using that shitty “post-conversion” technique used in recent films such as The Last Airbender. If you are familiar with the post-conversion style of 3D compared to that of a film actually shot with 3D cameras, the difference is significant – and I am definitely not a fan of 3D in general really, let alone the post-conversion style.

But alas, Marvel and the Directors will do what they want, and those of us not as excited as others to see these movies in after-the-fact 3D can be comforted in knowing everything gets released in standard format as well, so we won’t be forced to see it in “3D”!

Here’s a little of what Branagh had to say about Thor coming to theaters in 3D:

“We came to feel that in our case 3-D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience,” Branagh said, taking a break from post-production. The filmmaker said the terminology of the 3-D process initially made him cringe — at first, it was “math and physics and way over my head,” he said with a chuckle — but then he started to pulse with the unexpected artistic opportunities.

“It’s another draft of the story that can reveal itself in a different way,” he said. “I had a healthy degree of skepticism up front … I’ve become somebody extremely excited about working with possibilities of doing it this way.”

You can check out the full article over at the LA Times to see what else Branagh had to say about the process and get Captain America director, Joe Johnston’s take on “gimmicky” 3D as well!

So Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger will be coming at you in (post-conversion) 3D! Will you check them out in 3D, or will you opt for standard format? Discuss it in the Big Shiny Robot Forum or leave a comment below!

First Look at Loki from the Thor Movie

This is the first picture of Loki (Tom Hiddleston)  from the Thor movie. Here he is with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Odin (Anthony Hopkins). The more I see of this movie, the more I really can’t wait for it to come out next May!

Inception: Review

There will NOT be spoilers in this review.

I lucked out. Big time. Thanks to twitter (yes its good for something) I got to attend the pre-screening of Inception in Salt Lake. I just got home and I’ve still got a smile plastered on my face.  We all know that Christopher Nolan is a god-damned genius. Name one movie hes made that sucks. Do it right now, I’ll wait. Yes you can google it….

So what’d you find? Nothing? Of course nothing, because the man is amazing. He made The Dark Knight for Christ’s sake.

Inception stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb a man who is hired to extract information from a persons subconscious by infiltrating their dreams. He’s aided by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur who is his right hand man and is aware of Cobb’s demons and limitations. They get a job to place an idea in a man’s mind instead of extract one. Something supposedly impossible or at the very least very difficult. This is where Ellen Page comes in and makes me remember how much I love her. Ellen plays Ariadne (yes I spelled that right) who is the architect for the created dreams. Along for the ride are a “forger” and a “chemist” to help with the dream. The Forger played by Tom Hardy steals pretty much every scene hes in and he and Gordon-Levitt play off each other really well. The movie is long but never feels its full 148 minutes. There is enough action to keep you interested and I was biting my nails half the time.

I really can’t say much more without giving plot points away. The movie is part heist, part action gun fight, part mind fuck and I loved every minute of it. In fact I’m ready to go see it again and see how much more I notice and understand.
