COMIC-CON: Scott Pilgrim Interviews

We got to do a whole bunch of interviews with the cast and crew for Scott Pilgrim at Comic-Con and we’ll be presenting it slowly this week leading up to the film’s release on Friday.

For your viewing pleasure, we have two batches of interviews today.

First we have Satya Bhabha who plays Matthew Patel, Ramona’s first evil ex-boyfriend. We chatted about how he got the part and how he felt about the movie.

Then we have the creator/writer/artist of Scott Pilgrim and his universe, Bryan Lee O’Malley.  He did his interview with the co-screenwriter Michael Bacall (who you might recognize from Inglourious Basterds).

Coming up in the next few days are interviews with Kieran Culkin, Ellen Wong, Edgar Wright, and more!

UPDATED: Tony Scott to Direct Nemesis!

UPDATED: Deadline New York broke the story a little while ago. This is confirmed.

It seems as though some major website or another got scooped by Bleeding Cool and they ran a story pretty confidently asserting that Tony Scott will be directing Nemesis, the comic book about a millionaire, playboy super-villain who decides to kill America’s best cop.  (Think about Batman if he were a criminal and deciding to match wits against Jim Gordon instead of working with him.)

You can read the whole article here, but here’s the meat and potatoes.

I’m told that the announcement is definitely Nemesis being optioned and a director to be named.

The name most mentioned is that it is Tony Scott, director of movies such as Top Gun and Beverley Hills Cop II, is to direct the movie based on his comic book with Steve McNiven, Nemesis, currently on its second issue.

Tony Scott, younger brother of Ridley Scott is also known for directing Crimson Tide The Last Boy Scout,True Romance,  Enemy of the StateMan on Fire and Déjà Vu.

Of all of Mark Millar’s properties, I think this one is the best suited for a director like Tony Scott.  It doesn’t have the most complex story for him to mangle and it has some of the stupid sort of action that the lesser Scott brother does best.  (Like all that business in issue two with Air Force One?)

If this pans out, expect this movie to be a lot of dumb, cool fun.

DC Collecting Animated Shorts on DVD and Blu-ray

DC has been knocking their animated films out of the park lately, and one of the best things on the discs are the DC Animated Shorts that precede the feature films. They allow us to see highly stylized animated versions of characters that probably aren’t popular enough to rate their own release but are incredibly cool nonetheless.

In addition to The Spectre and Jonah Hex (which have been released), we’ll also get the forthcoming Green Arrow short as well as an original Superman/Shazam short called “The Return of Black Adam”.  This disc comes out November 9th.

They’ve provided some stills and more detailed information in their press release:

Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video have expanded the realm of superhero storytelling beyond the popular DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies with the introduction of the DC Showcase, a series of animated shorts featuring characters from the celebrated DC Comics vault. On November 9, 2010, Warner Home Video will distribute the DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection, the first quartet of animated adventures featuring the never-before-seen Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, as a Special Edition Blu-Ray™ for $29.99 (SRP) and single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP).

DC Showcase animated shorts initially appeared as special bonus content on the 2010 slate of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The 10- to 12-minute films include The Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow. All three titles will be presented in extended formats along with the first-ever release of Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam.

In Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, Clark Kent’s latest interview subject is street kid Billy Batson. What Clark doesn’t know is that Billy is more than a feisty kid with a lot of heart – he has been chosen by an ancient wizard to represent the good of man as the World’s Mightiest Mortal just by invoking the name of the wizard, “Shazam!” Billy’s powers come none-too-soon, as he also discovers
he’s being pursued by a centuries’ old, murderous villain, Black Adam – a foe so powerful, even Superman can’t stop him alone. The all-star cast of Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam is led by Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan) as Captain Marvel, George Newbern reprising his Justice League role as Superman, Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) as Black Adam and two-time Emmy Award® winner James Garner (8 Simple Rules) as The Wizard.

Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday) is executive producer and Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League, Avatar: The Last Airbender) is director of the first series of DC Showcase titles. Michael Jelenic (Wonder Woman) wrote the 22-minute script.

COMIC-CON: Avengers Teaser Video

Comingsoon.net got a hold of a very good looking copy of the video they played at Comic-Con just before the real life Avengers took the stage.

It’s a very, very brief clip, it’s narrated by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and shows… well… you’ll just have to see.

Pretty soon, you won’t have to leave your house to go to Comic-Con. They’ll just have a television station dedicated to Comic-Con content… (I wonder if they record the panels for posterity… Hell, I’d love to watch old Comic-Con panels on TV)…

But I bet you want the teaser:

The Avengers is going to be directed by Joss Whedon, comes out May 4th, 2012, and stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Rodriguez to Direct ‘Deadpool’?

Last month, there was a small blip on the Deadpool movie radar when a little rumor popped up that Robert Rodriguez would be helming the film starring the Merc With a Mouth. I saw it, but couldn’t find much truth behind it as both Rodriguez’s “people” and FOX were denying the reports, only confirming that Rodriguez had the script.

Well, now it looks like this might have a little something behind it. The LA Times is reporting that FOX and Rodriguez are now in the negotiation phase to try to work out a deal that will put him in the director’s chair.

There’s no deal yet, and the sides need to agree on a number of key points, but it’s moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.

As a big Deadpool fan (yes, I know he is just everywhere these days) I think Rodriguez would be a great fit. He has proven he can bring the funny and the action simultaneously and a good Deadpool movie is going to need lots of both. For the time being though, Rodriguez is promoting his upcoming film, Machete, and is currently working on Spy Kids 4: Armageddon (I know. . . I know), and Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, is wrapping up filming this week on Green Lantern and then I believe moving on to a film called The Change Up. So, Deadpool is most likely still a few years out, but this is an exciting prospect to hopefully getting a good Deadpool film from FOX of all studios!

And the Next DC Animated Movie Is…

Dwayne McDuffie, the screenwriter of the next DC Animated Feature has announced via his blog that All Star Superman will be the next film in the series.  It will be coming out in Spring.

This is pretty good news for people.  This is one of the better arcs of Superman and is pretty popular.  Personally, if they had to pick one Superman story, I’d just as soon see them do Worlds at War, but this should be really good.

We’ll report more information as it becomes available.

Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody

I’m not exactly sure if any of our readers care about this, but this is the internet.  Vivid Entertainment, the group behind the incredibly successful Batman XXX: Porn Parody have set their sights on Star Wars and have just made their first casting announcement.

Lexington Steele will be playing Darth Vader.  I have no idea who this guy is, but apparently he’s pretty big in the porn industry.

This sounds like something out of Kevin Smith’s underrated Zack and Miri Make a Porno…

There is no word when it will be completed or released, but if I continue to be sent information, I’ll continue to report on it.

From the press release:

Darth Vader may be one of pop culture’s most recognized figures.  Acclaimed actor James Earl Jones famously provided the voice of the character and Dave Prowse played the role in costume. Together they created an unforgettable impression of intergalactic evil.

Steele is a multi-dimensional actor/businessman who was the first adult star to win Male Performer of the Year three years in a row along with dozens of other national and international awards. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and was a stockbroker before becoming an actor in the adult industry.

“Axel was totally determined to get Lex for the Vader role, he never even considered anyone else.” saidSteven Hirsch, founder/co-chairman of Vivid. “We’re all happy that he was available and excited about playing this iconic character.”

Star Wars at Comic-Con 2010

Star Wars had much less of a presence at Comic-Con this year, owing to the fact that Star Wars Celebration V is just two weeks away.

I covered as much of it as I could (most of what there was to cover was on the exhibit hall floor.)  I also have an upcoming story about Star Wars Mimo-Bot’s and Bonnie Burton’s Star Wars can draw panel.  But now that I’m back in town, I wanted to offer a slideshow of some of the coolest Star Wars stuff I took pictures of at Comic-Con.

Enjoy the slideshow!

JJ Abrams to Bring Us Boilerplate

This is pretty exciting news.  Aintitcool and several other sources are reporting that JJ Abrams is developing a film version of Boilerplate.  Boilerplate is a pretty great book by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett and tells the tale of the world’s first robot, built in 1893.  It’s an incredibly fun read and the artwork through the years of photographic evidence of Boilerplate’s exploits is nothing short of breathtaking.  Add to the fact that Paul Guinan is probably one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met at Comic-Con and this is pretty special news.

If you haven’t yet read Boilerplate, now is the perfect time to pick it up.  Order it from your local comic-book store (or from Amazon) and read it now.  It’s an excellent coffee table book, too.  Even if you don’t plan on reading the incredibly careful historical text, the pictures are well worth the investment.

Thor Comic-Con Trailer Leaked!

Here is the 5 minutes of  Thor footage they showed this past week in San Diego. So, for those of you that weren’t able to attend Comic-Con last week, or for those that did and weren’t able to get into the insanely packed Hall H you get to see it here in all its glory! I don’t know about you but I was a little bit wet in the pants after seeing this!
