The D23 Avengers Presentation

Disney’s D23 expo was the site of Marvel’s unveiling of the Avengers (much to the dismay of the Comic-Con audience) and they brought out most of the principle cast and showed some footage. We managed to get video of the presentation and thought we’d offer it here to you.

The Hollywood Reporter got some interviews afterward and they offered some great tidbits.

Here’s Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey, Jr.:

Tom Hiddleston discussing his part as Loki:

And Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson talking about fight scenes and injuries on set:

The Avengers hits screens next year. You can read about the footage shown in this report from earlier today.

D23 Avengers Trailer Description

The Marvel Movies facebook page (which you should all join) was on hand at D23 and they posted a description of the Avengers footage shown. I know a lot of people were upset that they were showing the footage at D23 instead of Comic-Con, but it was no less effective in getting the word out instantly.

You can read the full description on the Marvel Movies facebook page, but my favorite part?

The ending:

Loki sees the camera and knows that the Avengers are watching him.
Lord, Thor’s arms are MASSIVE.
“You talk about peace and you kill cuz it’s fun.” – Fury to Loki
Loki looks even more menacing than he did in Thor…wow!
Loki’s hair looks longer. Maybe that’s just me.
We got to see Hawkeye loose an arrow. LOOKED GREAT.
Big explosion!
Renner also using guns. But he has a full quiver of arrows on his back.
Tony Stark is doing a headcount of the Avengers: A couple of master assassins, a demigod, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend
Iron Man and somone battling. Maybe Thor?
And the last scene of Tony Stark talking? It was to Loki!
To Loki: “And you, big fella, managed to piss off every one of them.” Loki: “I have an army.” Stark: “We have a Hulk!”

I’m still having a hard time believing that we get to see this movie in our lifetime. This sounds like everything we’ve wanted, everything we’ve asked for, everything our heart desires.

I still feel like I’m living in a dream and the other shoe is going to drop and we won’t REALLY have an Avengers movies.

It comes out next year, and the word on twitter from producer Kevin Feige at D23 is that they have only 2 weeks of filming left.

I can’t wait.

Until then, we’ll be on the lookout for the footage if it ever comes out for you to look at.

TRAILER: ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’

A few years back ol’ Nicholas Cage became Ghost Rider in a not-so-great but not-completely-unwatchable film adaptation of the Marvel character. Well, as you’ve probably heard Marvel felt it did well enough to have a second go at the character so the hired the directing team of Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine (the guys who brought us Crank and Crank: High Voltage) and said, “Make an action-centric sequel using lots of slow motion.”

We now have our first look at this follow up to Ghost Rider via the trailer below. No word yet on if Nicholas Cage will appear without his shirt on again with CG “enhanced” muscle definition since he apparently can’t be bothered to hit the gym.

So yeah. There it is. I am honestly at a loss of words. I’m not the world’s biggest Ghost Rider fan by any sense of the imagination, so I’ll leave it up to you readers to provide thoughts on the actual treatment of the character. From my point of view, looks like it will at most be a fun action-filled popcorn flick, but I doubt anyone is expecting this to be even close to the caliber of other Marvel hero films. You can definitely see the influences of the new directors, especially if you have seen either of the Crank films (Read: Lots of ludicrous action scenes and slow motion). It might just be me but I can’t exactly discern a clear plot out of this trailer, it just looked like a lot of action cut together with some vague voice-0vers. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance may end up being a step above its predecessor, but I don’t think that’s saying much.

We will all be able to cast out geeky verdicts upon Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance when it hits theaters on February 17, 2012.

PS – Swallowing bullets and spitting them back? Kind of lame. Ghost Rider pissing fire? Definitely lame.

Sound off in the comments below on what you think of the first trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance!

Additions to the Nerdorium

Every month I buy a shit ton of toys to add to my Nerdorium (A.K.A. home office). But I hardly ever get around to reviewing them on the site. I generally just talk about them on our monthly podcast (which you can listen to here, but I don’t recommend it). Similar to baldassbats Video Game Quick Hits, I’m going to try and do one for all the nerd shit I buy in a month. This month has been an exciting one. I just got a new job, and with it, a lot more income. Of course I spent a good chunk of my first check on collectibles. Also, my wife may or may not be leaving me.

Rock Man Plastic Model Kit
$27.99 EntertainmentEarth.com

When I was in high school I bought a lot of Rock Man Kits off of eBay. I lucked out and got four or five of them for one cent plus shipping. I loved those kits and had a lot of fun with them. Some day I hope to do a retro-review of them. You can imagine how excited I was when I saw the solicitation for new kits being released in the states.

PROS
• The details on these figures are wonderful.
• Plenty of extra hands and facial expressions to swap out.
• Great instructions which made building them a breeze.

CONS
• Kind of a high price point for these. I waited and got mine on a sale.
• Being a model kit, these figures fall apart pretty easily. Which can be frustrating while posing.

Sonic the Hedgehog: 20th Anniversary Through Time Action Figure (1991)
$11.99 Target

Oh, nostalgia. I’d say you’re responsible for at least two thirds of my purchases. I’m glad to see SEGA finally putting out some worthwhile figures of our favorite blue hedgehog. This figure follows the theme from the upcoming game, Sonic Generations. There are classic and modern versions of each of the characters available for the smaller format. I bought the larger five inch figure, which comes in classic or modern Sonic.

PROS
• Nostalgia.
• Great sculpt. From any angle it screams classic Sonic.
• Pretty well weighted for a top heavy figure. The smaller guys tend to fall over.

CONS
• Overly articulated. Sonic can twist at the pelvis, which leaves a big nasty break in his circular stomach.
• Some kind of serial number is printed on the inside of his shoe. There wasn’t a better spot?
• No accessories. Some rings or chaos emeralds would’ve been nice with the five inch figures.

Spider-Man 3 by Hot Toys
$149.99 Sideshow Collectibles

Man, Hot Toys sure has taken a lot of my money over the last few years. They keep getting better and better licenses. Most recently acquiring Star Wars. (Bespin Luke, anyone?) I was torn when this figure was pre-released. I love Spider-Man, but the third movie… not so much. Then again, the Wolverine figure Hot Toys released was based off of his solo movie. You know what? Fuck it. I’m buying one.

PROS
• As usual, this figure has spot on likeness to his big screen counterpart.
• Really awesome package design. My favorite box from the line.
• Webbing is printed on the outside of the costume, showing the attention to detail.
• Amazing (get it?) accessories. Lots of extra hands and webs. As well as a giant stand.
• Mid-range price point for a Hot Toys figure. $150 is very reasonable.

CONS
• I am so afraid to damage this guy. He’s the only spandex clad $150 doll I own. Although JJ (Lost In Comics) has put his figure through the ringer and says it holds up well.
• Being from Spider-Man 3, they are making a Mountain Dew Goblin to go with this. Hopefully they’ll go back and do a Doc Ock. I’d gladly play over $200 for him.

Stay Puft: Gozer the Destroyer
$70 Matty Collector

We’ve been going about this all wrong. This Mr. Stay Puft’s okay! He’s a sailor, he’s in New York; we get this guy laid, we won’t have any trouble!

PROS
• Over 20 inches tall and made from a squishy foam material. Largest Stay Puft ever made.
• Limited articulation at the shoulders, legs and head. Any more would ruin the sculpt.
• Comes with a gigantic cardboard diorama.

CONS
• San Diego Comic Con exclusive, therefore super hard to get ahold of.
• The foam is super fragile. Easily marked up, so be careful unpacking him.
• Face sculpt is good but not great. I prefer Gentle Giants piggy bank sculpt.
• I worry about discoloration over time, as well as general dust damage.
• Where the hell am I going to put him?

In conclusion I spent way too much money on toys this month. It’s hard to pick a favorite out of the bunch. I think Sonic has gotten the most attention from me. Especially for the value packed with nostalgia. Stay Puft is cool, but expensive for what he is. Same with the Rock Man kits. I love how my Spider-Man doll looks next to Wolverine and Batman. Next to join, Captain America. Now it’s time to get back to work so I can blow more cash on dolls.

Marvel Reacquires Rights to The Punisher and Blade

It has been announced that Marvel has two dates slated for film releases in 2014, and of course there is a lot of speculation surrounding exactly what these movies will be. Kind of lost in the mix of this bit of news was an interesting bit:

Marvel has apparently reacquired/bought back the rights to The Punisher and Blade.

This should come as exciting news to fans of these characters as the Marvel in-house productions have been mostly the best stuff to hit the big screen out of all Marvel character films, so we may be seeing some (more) solid films featuring these characters.

Of course, the Blade franchise was pretty successful and helped to pave the way for R-rated superhero flicks but The Punisher seemed to struggle to find an audience over the course of two films. I personally didn’t mind the Thomas Jane version of the character and thought the first movie was a good build up to a darker and more gritty sequel but instead we got Punisher: War Zone.

It will be interesting to see what Marvel does with these characters in the future. My guess is we will most likely see reboots of both franchises as opposed to direct sequels, but the question will be whether or not we get appropriate R-rated versions or watered down PG-13 films. In either case it could be a while before we see or hear anything with Marvel busy with all of the Avengers heroes and a handful of films supposedly in the pipeline for a bunch of other characters including Dr. Strange and Iron Fist. While I’m not a huge fan of The Punisher and Blade, I enjoyed their films just fine and would definitely hit the theaters for another go around with them.

What would you like to see in future Punisher and Blade movies knowing now they would be produced in-house at Marvel? Sound off in the comments below!

Iron Man Anime comes to G4

Marvel has announced that the anime version of Iron Man is coming to the U.S. this Friday at 11 PM ET on G4. The show originally aired on Japanese network Animax in October of 2010 and the 12 episode run was fairly successful. The big question is…how successful will it be here in the States?

Iron Man Anime

Marvel has been lightly criticized by anime fans for taking almost a year to bring this series to the states, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about the show so maybe they deliberated over how well it would do here. I haven’t had a chance to see the Iron Man anime yet but I did watch the entire X Men anime run (also by Madhouse production company) and thought it was pretty cool. The show did take a while to get going but once it did it was a fun watch.

I’ve honestly been wondering what non-anime-fan reactions will be to all these regionalized versions of iconic Marvel characters – especially since WolverineIron Man, and the X Men have each had their own anime series created in the past two years.

Watch the new Iron Man anime trailer here and tune in this Friday to G4 to see the premier:

Two More Marvel Movies Get Release Dates

Disney announced 2014 release dates for two brand new Marvel films this week. But they’re untitled, which leaves a lot up to the imagination. What could they be up to?

The first is slated for May 16, 2014.

The second comes out June 27, 2014.

Both of those are huge summer dates, May more than June. These must be heavy hitters they’re very confident about and want to stake out the territory aways in advanced. Speculation about what movies these are run rampant. Could they be doing another Captain America movie in 2014? Could it be Dr. Strange and Ant-Man, two films that seem perpetually near happening? What if these are for the Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. movie that’s been rumoured?

The great thing about this announcement is that Marvel Studios has built up so much good will that literally ANYTHING they announce in these spots will more than likely be great.

Two other big notes from the report that these come from (on Box Office Mojo) is that Pixar is also launching an untitled film on 5/30/2014. And Parker starring Jason Statham (based on the books and Graphic novel) comes out 10/12/12.

Secret Origins: Nova, The Human Rocket!

I’ve mentioned in earlier columns how Marvel tries to re-capture that “Spider-Man Magic” once a decade or so. The second attempt was Speedball, of course, but today’s subject is their first real attempt. They even say so on the cover! While his series lasted longer than Speedball’s, he was considered a B or C-list character until very recently. As an aside, both Speedball and today’s hero were stalwarts of the New Warriors in most of their incarnations. I actually prefer the original version of the character, hokey and derivative as he is. Before he was the grand space poo-bah with the uncomfortable looking shoulder spikes, he was “affectionately” known as bucket head. Who else could it be but Nova, The Human Rocket?!

Our tale begins on two fronts. The first, millions of miles from earth. An alien in a ship that looks like a winged corkscrew is pursuing the man who has crushed his arms and legs. The second, a high school basketball court. Richard Rider just flubbed a block and lost the game for the boys’ team. Yes, these are two wildly diverse scenes, but they are about to converge in a strange way. On Earth, Rich is being soundly ridiculed for letting the girls win. As such, he’s feeling pretty sorry for himself, and his pal Ginger says he just lacks confidence. Back in space, and approximately 70 million miles closer to Earth than when we last peeked in on the alien, he makes a fateful decision on how to deal with the fugitive who brought him to death’s door.

A dying alien sending a green light to pick a successor. That's NEVER been done before!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the centurion has a buttload of alien knowledge that I do not, but even he himself admitted he picked a dude totally at random. What if the ray missed and hit like, a rabbit or something? Worse yet, Doctor Doom? I’m just saying, pinning your hopes on something akin to a cosmic lottery isn’t usually the actions of a sane man. Anyway, as you might have guessed, the green beam hits Rich, the saddest sack this side of the Mason-Dixon line. Instead of imbuing him with phenomenal cosmic powers, it  puts him into a phenomenal coma. While comatose, Rich learns of his destiny through exposition. My guess is the beam induces a coma so the centurion can have a captive audience, but you be the judge…

"In Brightest Day..."

While that vignette could be chalked up to a coma-induced fever dream, it is sufficient to rouse Rich from his unconsciousness. Of course, he shouts about the fugitive Zorr and shoots a destructive green beam of light from his eyes, but at least he’s awake, right? Apparently that’s how Rich’s parents operate, because it’s NEVER. MENTIONED. AGAIN. And so Rich is back in school, things are relatively back to normal, although our Mr. Rider is in full-on introspective mode, so much so that he isn’t paying attention in class. It’s here where the first inklings of the Nova power (besides random green eye-beams) surface in the young man.

"You might even be able to do fractions!"

Amazing mathmagic aside, Rich is about ready to just chalk his coma-induced vision to just some weird hallucination. After all, where are his rippling biceps and pecs? No seriously, he actually ponders this. Just as he goes back into his default mode of feeling sorry for himself, the power explodes from him like “The Force of a Thousand Cobalt Bombs!” The actually effect is green, though. Anyway, Rich is now the spitting image of the alien centurion, and the newly christened Nova takes off, well, like a rocket!

"Surely my book won't be cancelled in less than 2 years!"

As fledgling heroes are wont to do, Nova wants to test his new abilities to the fullest, so he decides to cut loose at the junkyard! After crashing through an inner-city junkyard band’s instruments and barely feeling it, he declares he can do anything he wants, including getting back at people he feels has wronged him. Before the ghost of the centurion can spin in his space-grave though, Nova chastises himself for thinking so selfishly. It’s actually a testament to the character of Rich Rider that he realizes the correlation between power and responsibility without having to see a family member die. It’s quite refreshing, actually. With his new mission in mind, Nova starts looking for wrongs to right. Luckily, the starburst on his helmet also apparently acts as an antenna. Picking up the local police band, Nova learns of a massive disturbance downtown. He rockets off, and in the distance, we see a bunch of his school chums decide to follow him. This really makes no sense, because in the above panel, Nova mentions he’s 40 miles from home, but whatever. The important thing here, is the burger franchise the kids frequent.

Yeah, I'll have a Hulk Burger, a side order of Mandarin Rings, and an Ultimate Nullifier, please.

As it turns out, when Nova approaches the disturbance, it ends up being Zorr! Talking about your unbelievable strokes of luck! Zorr mistakes Nova for Centurion Prime, which is unsurprising, seeing as they look exactly the same. Zorr wastes no time in trying to re-kill his adversary. And Nova walks in the footsteps of many Marvel heroes, by doing the whole witty banter routine. Although, comparing a missed blaster shot to Catfish Hunter is probably only funny to Ken Burns. As the battle rages, Nova introspects about why heroes always try to make with the funny…

Nova & Company, this Fall on the CW: It's bound to be better than Homeboys in Outer Space!

The fight goes on for a few pages, with Nova holding his own pretty well for being an absolute novice. He even manages to save a bystander or two. As fate would have it, Rich’s schoolmates arrive on the scene just then, apparently deftly making it through non-existent police cordons. Your tax dollars at work, citizens of Marvel New York! Nova rightly tells them to get the *%)# out of the way, but thus distracted, Zorr takes the opportunity to literally fling Nova into the side of a building! While in flight, Nova shrugs it off, thinking that his new super-tough skin will absorb the impact. He’s half right. It seems he is unhurt, but he does manage to topple the building over just where his friends happen to (still) be. Nova, who is still deep down the same Rich Rider, blames himself for not crashing into the building in such a way to not damage it. I admire him wanting to take responsibility, but seriously, if you blame yourself for every little thing like a crumbling building, you aren’t going to get far in the hero biz. Nova is quick enough to save his pals though.

He kinda just did scab labor for the construction union, too.

The crisis averted, Nova rockets headlong into Zorr, meaning to end this fracas. Just as Zorr is about to finish his monologue, he disappears in a flash of light! Zorr seemed to be just as surprised as Nova, too. So with the battle over with no clear victor, Nova decides to return home, so he can contemplate his new place in life. We cut back to Centurion Prime’s shift, still orbiting the planet, and inside, Prime’s body is gone, and the empty uniform of Zorr is sprawled on the floor. What happened is a story for another time (mostly because I don’t own the next issue), so we go back to Rich…

"But first-- homework!"

And so begins the career of Nova, the Human Rocket! He had a respectable run of 25 issues, but was pretty dormant until the 90’s when he was recruited into the New Warriors. This led to a stubbly 90’s series, and he was revived yet again at the turn of the millennium. It wasn’t until Marvel’s massive Annihilation series that Nova became the embodiment of the Nova Corps (another, GL “inspiration”), a Secret Avenger, and a hero touted as a “Guardian of Our Galaxy”. Not bad for a sad sack kid from the burbs, I guess Centurion Prime knew what he was doing after all!

This story originally appeared in Nova #1 September, 1976. It was reprinted in Essential Nova Volume 1 and Nova: The Origin of Richard Rider
