In Memoriam: Gene Colan 1926-2011

Today the comics industry has lost a legend. Eugene “Gene” Colan passed away at the age of 84 on July 23rd due to complications from liver cancer.

He had quite the resume in his long career. He drew many books for both DC and Marvel. Captain America, Batman, Howard the Duck, Daredevil, Sub Mariner, he did it all. He had two massive comic runs in his career. He drew the entire 70 issue run of “Tomb of Dracula” in the 70’s and an almost interrupted (all but three issues) 81 issue run, from issues #20 to #100 on Daredevil.

Recently he won an Eisner award for Best Single Issue along with Ed Brubaker for their work on Captain America #601 proving he was still one of the best in the business. Here are a couple of quotes from the publishers of DC comics Jim Lee and Dan Didio on how they felt about Gene Colan:

“Gene Colan was one of the great draftsmen in the industry and his work is a fond part of some of my best comic book memories.” —Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher of DC Comics

“Gene Colan was like no other artist of his generation.  His ability to create dramatic, multi-valued tonal illustrations using straight India ink and board was unparalleled.  The comics industry has lost one of its true visionaries today.” —Jim Lee, artist and Co-Publisher of DC Comics

If you’ve never been exposed to his artwork I highly suggest looking it up. He was one of the greats and will be missed!

Shane Black To Direct Iron Man 3

Deadline is reporting that Shane Black is indeed in final negotiations to direct the third Iron Man picture which has a May 2012 release date.

Shane Black is a favorite choice of ours because of his work as a tight screenwriter of films like Lethal Weapon and as a fantastic director, particularly his last Robert Downey Jr. team up, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

A curious note in the Deadline story: Black isn’t, at this point, writing the screenplay. That piece of the negotiation is up in the air, but any director worth his salt will change up the script to suit the material and vision regardless. And Shane Black’s strengths start with his story structure and screenwriting. It would be foolish to hire him for directing and not bring to bear the true nature of his talent.

Take it from us, this is great news for Marvel fans.

Shane Black Directing Iron Man 3?

Though Jon Favreau brought us two installments of the Iron Man franchise, he’s stepped away for the greener pastures of films like Cowboys and Aliens and Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Marvel is still planning on bringing us more movies.

The hunt has been on for a director to fill in for Favreau and with the May 3, 2013 release date for Iron Man 3 not getting any closer, they need to find someone fast.

The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that Shane Black is being circled to fill in the post.

From their report:

Shane Black is in contention to direct Iron Man 3 for Marvel Studios.

The writer/director has powwowed with Marvel execs about his take on the third installment in the blockbuster franchise. As of now he is being considered for the directing job, but the assumption is that if he gets the gig, he would also write a draft.

Insiders said that Black’s involvement is far from a sure thing, and that other filmmakers were being looked at.

You’ll remember Shane Black for writing the still dynamite script for the first Lethal Weapon movie and writing and directing the incredible Robert Downey, Jr. film Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. He has a rapport with the actor who is Iron Man and he is a great screenwriter and has already proven himself capable of handling the tone that Jon Favreau set in the first two films and, I think, he’s able to even amp it up exponentially.

He’s a fantastic writer, his directing work has been fun to watch, and as long as Marvel didn’t get too far in the way, this could be just the jolt in the arm that Iron Man 3 needs to remind people that there is life after an Avengers movie.

Other filmmakers are up for the part, though. Who do you guys think would be the perfect director for the Iron Man gig? Or is Shane Black a great choice?

Marvel Announces “Fear Itself” Event!

“Fear above all else seems to be the great motivator” – Joe Quesada

Marvel held a press conference today to announce their summer event for 2011.   Joe Quesada started off the conference talking about times being tough with the economy, divides in belief, and other things to be afraid of. This led to the announcement of “Fear Itself,” a seven issue mini series starting in April written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Stuart Immonen.  There is also a prologue issue in March written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Scott Eaton. The Marvel Universe will refelct what is happening in the real world and what happens when despair becomes the norm. Will heroes fall to fear? Or will they rise up? The story will follow the Marvel Heroes against the God of Fear. The best we have to offer against the worst of the gods.

They showed a teaser video followed up with some words from Matt Fraction about the event.

We were then asked, “Who will be the 8 most worthy on the planet?” But were left at just that tease.

We were told “There is a concealed act at the heart of the Marvel Universe that once revealed will change everything,” which I believe will be revealed in the “Fear Itself” prologue which is set in World War II and involves Captain America, Namor, and the Invaders. The dominoes for this event have been in motion and setting up for almost 2 years. Some will be obvious and some won’t.  This will involve the entire Marvel Universe. From the X-Men to Dracula and the Hulk.

The price point will be 3.99 for the mini series, with a 45 page first issue. If you want the core story all you will have to read is the mini series. However it will be spilling over into the rest of the MU with tie-ins, one shots, and ancillary mini series. None of the required to get the story, but will enhance the experience telling you what is happening with the characters you choose to follow. Tom Brevoort said  “We’re trying to build each tie-in to tell a solid story in and of itself that feeds into the larger story.” Overall it will have about the same amount of tie-ins as Secret Invasion.

The  floor was opened to questions from the press in attendance and twitter. These were taken from Marvel.com’s live blog of the event.

Q: How much political and societal stuff is going into the story?
A: You will absolutely see the real world interject itself. It’s undeniable that there’s a certain something in the air right now. Tapping into that is what we do at Marvel and it brings out the best in our creators. But it’s all through the eyes of our heroes.
Q from Twitter: What characters will be involved? Captain Britain? Phobos?
A: Secret Warriors might be a good bet for Phobos. Captain Britan and Nightmare–a little early, but we’re getting closer, so information will be coming out.
Q: How does this tie into the first arc Avengers with the map of time? (Seen in Avengers #5)
A: Go back to that map and you will already see some portents; you’ll see more once Fear Itself starts.
Q: Is this already the end of the Heroic Age?
A: Our characters have always battled the darkness around us. The threats they’ve faced have never been a game of Tiddly Winks. This is a major challenge our characters will face. It’s not a movement back to darkness and death, though there will certainly be some of that.
Q: How much politics will we see in this story?
A: If we do our job right, we will see a lot of ourselves and our humanity in this story, and Matt Fraction is the right guy here who is very in tune with politics, social issues and morality, and every creator also has their own views, which makes it fun.
Q: Will what’s going on with FF tie in to Fear Itself?
A: Whatever’s left of the Fantastic Four will be involved
Q: How long have you been seeding Fear Itself?
A: Around 18 months to two years. It will become more clear.
Q: Will this affect any of Fraction or Immonen’s other books?
A: Matt will continue on Thor and Iron Man, Kieron Gillen is helping him out on Uncanny X-Men. Stuart is coming off New Avengers to do Fear Itself.
Q: Will Steve Rogers be back as Cap ala the teaser image?
A: Right now Bucky is involved in a trial. This image could mean anything. Don’t count Bucky out too quick.
The conference was wrapped up shortly after that. I’m not quite sure if I’m excited or not for the event, but I am interested enough in checking it out.

Jon Favreau NOT Directing Iron Man 3

Fans of the Iron Man movies, get ready for a ride.

It’s being reported that Jon Favreau, Director of the first two Iron Man movies will not be returning to direct the third – a decision he informed Marvel Studios of this week. It’s unclear if the decision was financial or creative. Unnamed sources are saying that Favreau was frustrated with Marvel wanting to cram so many different characters from the Marvel U into his Iron Man movies, but nothing about this being the reason has been confirmed. But Vulture did offer up this tidbit supporting it:

In a recent interview with MTV News, Favreau explained that based on his conversations with Marvel Studios executives, he had no clarity as to what a third Iron Man film would even be about. “In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers,” said Favreau at the time, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

Eric Goldman over at IGN notes:

However, Vulture says Favreau may have simply been too expensive for Marvel at this point, as they and their parent company, Disney, look to find ways to cut costs – noting that Favreau is said to have made $10 million for Iron Man 2 and would almost certainly get another sizable raise for Iron Man 3 to as much as $15 million, along with receiving 15 percent of the film’s gross after it recouped costs.

Honestly, either reason could be the case, but whatever the reasoning may be, Marvel is on the hunt to find a new director for Iron Man 3.

So, readers, what do you guys think of this news? Do you think Marvel was maybe trying to micromanage the project too much? Could they just not afford Favreau? Who would you like to see replace him? Sound off in the comments below!

Interesting Side-Note: Robert Downey, Jr.’s contract with the Iron Man movies gives him director approval rights.

Jon Favreau talks about Iron Man 3

MTV spoke with Jon Favreau about the current and future plans of the Iron Man films in relation to the rest of the Marvel films.

“In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and Avengers.”

With different timlines separating the films Favreau is waiting for Thor, Captain America, and the Avengers movies to be finished before planning Iron Man 3. The big question is will Iron Man 3 wrap up the current movie continuity or leave the door open for more films? It’d be nice to see Spider-Man and the X-men make future apperances, but we’ve already seen so many good Superhero movies, maybe we’re a bit spoiled.

Movie TrailersMovies Blog

Iron Man 3 has a Release Date!

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heatvision Blog is reporting that Disney has struck a deal with Paramount to release “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” and they have established a date for the release of the third Iron Man film.

May 3, 2013 is the date you need to write in your calendars.

Though they’ll be paying Paramount a boatload of cash for the right to distribute these films, it makes a lot of sense for Disney, since they own Marvel.  It must really bite at them to see another film company profiting so handsomely from the release of what is now their intellectual property.

Despite the deal, Paramount will still be distributing Captain America and Thor.

This shows a lot about how grown up Paramount and Disney can be and makes me wonder why Fox  and Sony won’t play ball.  It would be to all of our benefit to see Marvel Studios handling all of the other Marvel properties and they can build up a single movie universe out of it (like the fans want). I mean, I would love to see Peter swing by the Baxter Building and get advice from Johnny Storm, and see Nick Fury face off against the Punisher, and Charles Xavier, Reed Richards and Tony Stark hanging out with Dr. Strange and casting the Hulk into space, or whatever.

Fox, Sony, and Lionsgate could still make a killing with their licenses, but give the Marvel movies a life of their own and the potential to be greater than they are.

Click here to read the full report from The Hollywood Reporter.

What do you guys think?  Would it be better for Marvel to have control of all of their properties back?  What would you like to see on film if it could happen?

A Look at the Cover to January’s Issue of Detective Comics

Giffen and Levitz Revisit The Legion Together

This news broke over at DC’s blog, The Source.

Okay, I’m just gonna geek out and shout it to the heavens:

PAUL LEVITZ AND KEITH GIFFEN ARE REUNITING ON THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES!!!

And I get to edit it! Whee!! You have to understand what this monumental development means to me personally.

Y’see, Paul and Keith transformed the Legion from an enduring DC franchise into one of the most popular and dynamic comic book series of the 1980s. With an entire 30th century future world at their command, they crafted the most innovative, break-the-mold superhero world anyone had ever read up to that point. Their names were spoken in the same breath as Frank Miller, Chris Claremont and Wolfman/Pérez.

For me and the many other fanboys of Generation X, Paul and Keith did the seemingly impossible: They made me a Legion fan. For life.

I admit, back in 1985, my 14-year-old self felt names like “Lightning Lad” and “Cosmic Boy” sounded really silly. No way I was going to invest in characters with those names, right?

Then I somehow stumbled upon TALES OF THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #326, which affordably reprinted Paul and Keith’s all-new LEGION series a year after their original release. This one reprinted issue #1. It must have been a slow week for me to even crack open the cover. It began with a collection of psychopaths called the Legion of Super-Villains who each took a blood oath to kill a Legionnaire. One of them tortured his own sister by jolting her with massive amounts of electricity. Another literally melted a lowly waitress alive with a molten kiss, just for the fun of it! Sick stuff. And yet, these Legionnaires refused to back off. I was really impressed. I wanted to know more about these guys, even if their names were “Saturn Girl” and “Ultra Boy.” They stopped being silly and became as serious as a heart attack.

Then Keith left the series shortly thereafter, and Paul flew solo for a long while. Then Keith came back to do the last year on that series with Paul—and I defy anyone to tell me issue #53’s “The Trial of Brainiac 5” isn’t awesome—and then Paul left the series for Keith to do solo.

That was 1989. The two never collaborated on the Legion again. That is, until this December, when they come together again on the oversized LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ANNUAL #1. It introduces an all-new, all-psycho Emerald Empress—and just hearing the twisted stuff they have in store fills this Legion fan with utter glee.

In fact, Keith just sent me his first pages, and they look gorgeous. He’s mixing Kirby with his ’90s Legion style and a modern sensibility. I look at the Xeroxes on my desk, and I know it’s REAL. It’s happening.

It reminded me why I’m a Legion fan in the first place.

P.S. You know what’s REALLY weird? This is Paul and Keith’s third “LEGION ANNUAL #1.” They did one in 1982, 1985 and now in 2010. Third time’s the charm, they say!

Marvel Teases: “All New All Different” for December

Ardian Syaf Joins “Birds of Prey” as its New Artist

Starting in December, the Birds of Prey will get a new member – to their creative team, that is.

Hot off a stint on GREEN LANTERN CORPS and BRIGHTEST DAY, Ardian Syaf steps in as the regular artist on the series, joining forces with regular writer Gail Simone. And Syaf is stepping in just in time, as the series continues to kick things into high gear, with a new arc starting in December titled “The Death of Oracle.”

BIRDS OF PREY Editor Janelle Siegel was kind enough to show off a few pages of Ardian’s art, and it seems she’s as excited as we are about the new addition:

“I’ve been a fan of Ardian’s work for quite some time, so I jumped at the chance to have him on Birds of Prey. He’s a great fit for the book because he is an immensely talented artist with a gift for storytelling and action and he’s also great at drawing beautiful women! We couldn’t ask for a better combination than that for the kind of stories we’re telling in Birds of Prey right now.”

Oh, and about that art…
