Anatomy of a Failure: Iron Man 2

There is a moment early on in Iron Man 2 which serves as a crystallization of exactly why the film, despite all of the things it has going for it, doesn’t work. It is just after Mickey Rourke’s character of Ivan Vanko has busted onto the track of the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and attacked several cars with his electronic whips, including Tony Stark’s own. Stark crashes and emerges from the wreckage, just in time to see it. The cars coming up behind Vanko on the track swerve, desperately trying not to hit him, and crash into one another. The result is a giant, fiery explosion right behind Vanko as he walks towards Stark.

This moment is entirely superfluous in every way, in a manner that is not dissimilar to the work of Michael Bay. The explosion exists simply because someone thought it would be cool to have a shot of Vanko walking away from an explosion in this scene, possibly even mirroring Stark’s own walk-away from an explosion in the first film. But the explosion is an act of entirely passive storytelling. Vanko does not whip one of the oncoming cars, causing the explosion. The cars themselves should not be exploding in the first place, even if they crash, the cars Vanko whipped with untold amounts of energy didn’t explode. If they do explode, with how close they are to Vanko, they should do some damage to him. But perhaps most importantly, the death of these drivers are never addressed again. They did not matter to the story, the explosion did not matter to the story, and no one who is involved with the story was affected by this moment in any way, shape, or form.

Iron Man 2 was released in 2010, just as Marvel Studios was really starting to gear up on the road to The Avengers. The film is often pointed to as a weak spot in Marvel’s ever-expanding catalog and this is essentially the reason why. Many people, Favreau included, said the film did not work because it was simply too busy doing the heavy-lifting of laying the groundwork for the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But that’s really not true.

Sure, it features the Stark Expo which would later be seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, and it introduces us to Romanoff as Black Widow, who would go on to be featured in countless other Marvel films. Aside from that, we get some S.H.I.E.L.D. references and appearances here and there, a weirdly-placed Captain America’s shield cameo, a namedrop of the Avengers Initiative, and a nod to Phil Coulson’s involvement in New Mexico with Thor’s hammer. But none of these things are what makes Iron Man 2 a weak film. These are integral to the film at their best and simply superfluous at their worst, but none of them take up enough time in the film to ruin it.

So then, what does derail Iron Man 2? It’s a sequel to a smash success, starring an incredibly likable and talented cast, directed by a visionary and extremely capable director, and featuring some sleek action sequences and imagery, so what went wrong? Well, at its most basic level, the writing. But more so than that, it is the fact that all of Iron Man 2’s storytelling is done passively.

The difference between active and passive storytelling is as simple as the difference between someone saying to you ‘I damaged your car’, instead of, ‘Your car was damaged’. The second sentence is a restating of what happened, without any implication of responsibility. In the world of passive storytelling, things just happen without cause, without reason, and without motivation. And this is exactly the problem that Iron Man 2 runs into again and again.

Even looking at the larger picture, the structure of Iron Man 2 itself is entirely passive. Essentially the film spends its run time hopping from one subplot to the next, until its reached feature-length and can just cue up the big third act battle. It starts as a film about Tony and Vanko’s history, before becoming a film about the government trying to ascertain the Iron Man tech from Tony, before becoming a film about Tony’s failings at Stark industries leading to him appointing Pepper as the new CEO, before becoming a film about Tony’s arc reactor slowly killing him and the depressed binge it sends him on, before becoming a film about S.H.I.E.L.D. putting Stark on lock down, before becoming about Justin Hammer, Ivan Vanko, and a bird.

If there is a central storyline here, it is that of Tony having to atone for the sins of his father and come to terms with his own history. Vanko is the son of a man who worked alongside Howard Stark in the creation of the original arc reactor and has now come to claim what he feels is rightfully his. Tony is putting on the Stark Expo, deliberately following in his father’s footsteps. But even this is fumbled, the thread lost over the course of the film. By the time Tony is watching some of Howard’s old reels of footage and Howard turns to Tony and tells him “What is, and always will be, my greatest creation… is you”, it feels completely unearned. The film has done little to nothing to actually explore the relationship between these two men other than to have Tony say that Howard never openly showed him love. Instead of showing us their relationship, at all, the film opts to tell us about it briefly and figures that will be enough.

The script itself cannot commit to actively telling or choosing a story, so instead it tries to tell multiple and loses what should have been its own beating heart in the process.

Even the film’s most essential and supposedly plot-progressing moments are completely undermined by their passive nature. Hammer breaks Vanko out of prison without either one of them ever even forming a semblance of a plan or even having a conversation, it just happens. Rhodey takes an Iron Man suit from Tony to give to the military, and Tony neither stops him nor cares, despite firmly stating up front that he doesn’t want his tech to be weaponized ever again. The cure for Tony’s sickness is literally given to him by his father in a film reel hand-selected for him by S.H.I.E.L.D. Vanko’s goal throughout the entire film is to kill Stark but then he seems perfectly content to just sit around Hammer’s workshop talking about nothing of any importance for the majority of the final two acts simply because the film needs to stall him until its third act finale time.

The end of the film even sees Pepper and Tony finally getting together as a romantic couple, but there has been literally zero development between the two of them over the course of the film. Tony makes her CEO to pass off all of his paperwork to her and then buys her strawberries as a gift, which she is allergic to. There is no reason for the two of them to feel romantically close or involved, it just happens. Throughout the film, Tony doesn’t learn any lessons or even really do anything for himself. From the revelation about how to cure his illness, to the victory over Vanko, to his relationship with Pepper, everything is just given to him.

Iron Man 2 is made up of a lot of interesting parts, all of which could and should have added up to something more. But with a script that remains firmly locked into passive storytelling mode for the entirety of its run time, the film comes off as completely limp and ultimately inconsequential.

The Wizeguy: The High Cost Of Avenging Part One.

Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end. In the beginning you setup your hero (or heroine) and his story, then you throw something at him that is a great source of conflict and takes him into a whole heap of trouble. After facing many foes and overcoming various obstacles the hero saves the day. An archetypal story pattern, The hero’s journey.

Tony Starks journey began the moment he left that cave in his Mark 1 armor. First it was about his own security, than his friends and finally the whole world. Let’s talk about the evolution of Tony Stark in the MCU.

In ‘Iron Man 1’, he moved away from selling weapons and focused on Iron Man. He felt responsible.

In ‘Iron Man 2’, he resisted government oversight, and didn’t trust them (rightfully so. That senator that wanted his suit was Hydra).

In ‘Avengers’, he did not trust SHIELD, and immediately hacked Fury as soon as he got on the Helicarrier. It’s because of the Battle of New York. Tony has always been an enormous control freak, someone who needs to manage every aspect of events and sees himself as always bigger than the problem. Here, we see him deal with a threat larger than he had imagined and it caused the PTSD he suffered in the third film. And his fear over what could happen pushes him to create Ultron and it blows up in his face. Guilt on guilt on guilt.
He was the absolute worst person to go through a hole in space and see an alien armada bigger than any army Earth has ever fielded in the entirety of human history.

In ‘Iron Man 3′, he saw the consequences on a personal level; having a problem bigger than he is led him to feel like everything in his life was spinning out of control. He stopped trusting himself, and began letting go. He made an army of robots to stop any crime/solve any problem. The crux of the culmination of IM2 & IM3, He had to deal with “demons of his own creation” – people he’d pissed off and ended up turning into villains who’ve harmed people in the process. More guilt placed on him, showing it or not.

In ‘Age of Ultron’, he wanted to create a system that could do the protecting for him, so he didn’t have to. It began with the Iron Legion (those drones), and ended with Ultron. I think his character is fairly consistent in that respect. Tony tries to help humanity with weaponized brilliance, oversteps because of his ego, then feels ISHT-y and tries to compensate. Usually Overcompensating. Which usually restarts the cycle. The PTSD—Wanda had to barely even nudge him to convince him that he had to build an unstoppable army of killer robots just in case the Chitauri came back.

And in ‘Civil War’, we see him finally accept that he can’t solve the problem single-handedly…leading him to decide to micro-manage every other superhero in the world into getting on board with his new solution, because he still can’t let go of the need to be in charge of fixing everything.

Tony’s entire arc has been all about dealing with the unintended consequences of Avenging. He’s done a complete 180 since ‘Iron Man 1’, gradually over all six of these movies.

That’s the unbelievable beauty of the narratives in the MCU – Tony and Steve (A.K.A Captain America) have basically flipped positions with each other when considering their initial character stances (Tony as a private weapons contractor who thinks he’s above reproach, Steve wanting to give of himself to a larger cause) and this happens because they’re not static characters. Events throughout the MCU have moved them into the other’s shoes – starting with Avengers and continuing Winter Solider, Steve realizes that even the large government-sanctioned institution, one started by the EFF-ing woman he loved, can become corrupt and ultimately his own judgment is the only one he can trust; Tony, thanks to ‘Age of Ultron’, realizes that his assumptions about the level of control he has over situations is not perfect and if somebody like him, even with the best intentions, could create an AI that destroys an entire city, then oversight needs to be a factor. And, they’ve done it without being quite as biased about Stark’s righteousness as the comic version was: Ultron showed us that it’s not about power, it’s about “wanting to put a suit of armor around the whole world.”

It’s character growth.

However, with all due respect…

Unless I totally missed something in the previous movies, I find it deeply ironic that Tony Stark, Mr. “These are my suits of armor and I can do whatever I want with them,” is champing at the bit for more oversight. Tony Stark is a firm believer in maximizing the freedom of Tony Stark. Not coincidentally, the freedom of Tony Stark is maximized in a world where Tony Stark is the guy who’s calling all the shots. The guy who wants to restrict everyone is the guy who has the privilege of ignoring those rules and getting away with it. Tony plays by no rules, so of course he can’t see a problem with more of them for everyone else. In other words, it’s another self-serving and self-aggrandizing rationalization made by the guy who lives his life with abject certainty that he knows what’s best, and who has either directly or indirectly caused or worsened every fight he’s ever been in. I guess the other heroes will just have to learn and abide by the lessons Tony’s hubris have taught.

New ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Trailer

There is a TON in this new trailer, and it would do everyone a disservice to even give the smallest thing away. All I will say is I got chills multiple times throughout.

Without further ado …

‘Captain America: Civil War’ Teams Revealed

A few days back, Jeremy Renner let slip that his Hawkeye will be taking Captain America’s side in “Captain America: Civil War”, but now it appears the full rosters of both, Cap & Iron Man’s teams, have been leaked!

It looks like Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow, Black Panther, and The Vision will be facing off against Captain America, Hawkeye, Sharon Carter, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, and Ant-Man (can you spot him?).

This is an interesting divide in The Avengers, but I like it, so count me on board. I’m also loving that Sharon Carter will apparently be playing a bigger role in this film, standing by Cap! Now that the rosters have been set, we will have to wait to see how this all shakes out when our beloved Avengers split and go toe-to-toe with one another on May 6, 2016!

Any surprises for you with these teams?! Sound off in the comments!

What To Expect From Marvel Comics Winter 2015

Marvel comics has had a series of big announcements hit the Internet since the beginning of October, through New York Comic Con, and continuing through today. I’m going to quickly hit on each one due out this winter. Marvel Comics is bringing back some oldies, moving on from some classics, and letting their writers do their best to tip their hat to the best stories from last decade.

First up was the announcement that Marvel is giving fan favorite Great Lakes Avenger Squirrel Girl her own book this January. The certain to be winter hit will be another welcome addition to the increasing number of female lead books in capes and tights comics. Not to let the guys have all of the fun, Squirrel Girl will first face off against Kraven the Hunter in “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1”. Eisner award recipient Ryan North will write the book alongside artist Erica Henderson.

Another book coming this January is a follow up from the writer who recently killed off James “Logan” Howlett in “The Death of Wolverine”, Charles Soule. The talented writer with recent hit after hit will be telling the story of the people who will take up Logan’s mantle – or rather his claws. “Wolverines #1” will be heading to comic book shelves with a SNIKT and a growl courtesy of co-writer Ray Fawkes and artist Nick Bradshaw. The Internet has already decided that Sabretooth is the next Wolverine but he’ll have some competition courtesy of X-23, Daken, Mystique, and Lady Deathstrike.

Another Avenger getting a title will be the continuation of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop with “Hawkeye #1”. The Eisner winning series from Matt Fraction and David Aja was a refreshing change for mainstream comics. It has ushered in an era of exciting art choices alongside contemporary story telling. Taking up the book after it’s large success will be Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez. Lemire recently left DC Comics “Green Arrow” book after an amazing run with Andrea Sorrentino. I for one, am extremely excited to get more Lemire stories about archers and I’m hoping Sorrentino will guest on the book at some point just for all of his “Green Arrow” faithful like me.

Another X Title getting an announcement was “Amazing X-Men #15”. The title will see the rebirth of The Unstoppable Juggernaut. Will the Gem of Cyttorak return to Cain Marko or will someone else claim the blessing that is an inter-dimensional curse? Chris Yost will write the title alongside Jorge Fornes on art duties. This title will also see the light of day January of 2015.

Coming to televisions soon is the “Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.” offshoot staring the people that started Shield, Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. This winter Marvel is also bringing those characters to the pages of comics in “Operation S.I.N.”. The series will be a mini expected to go for 5 issues. It will be written by Kathryn Immonen with art by Rich Ellis and it will star the first man on the wall, Woodrow McCord.

Before the upcoming 2015 summer blockbuster Ant-Man will be the 2015 winter comic release of “Ant-Man #1” by Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas. Of course the big question is, who will be the man under the mask? Marvel has announced that Scott Lang will see the next evolution of his character after his stint watching the world for Reed Richard and the Fantastic Four in “FF”.

Ant-Man #1

Another big female character to get her own book will be the Spider-Woman herself, Jessica Drew. She will be coming to a comic page near you soon in “Spider-Woman #1” by Dennis Hopeless with art by Greg Land. This book will be launching directly out of Spider-Verse alongside the news of Spider-Gwen getting her own series. The cover features Jessica next to newcomer Silk. Will we be seeing the rise of a new Spider-Woman or will the longtime webbed wonder Drew be showing Silk the ropes to the webs?

Last, but not least, is the announcement of the fall of Tony Stark. Of course, from his perspective, he’ll just be embracing the bastard in himself and not succumbing to booze so he’ll see it more as a victory. After the fall out of “Original Sin” and the currently running “Avengers & X-Men: Axis” series, Iron Man will become better in “Superior Iron Man #1”. It’s won’t be Doctor Octopus in Stark’s head though, he’ll just be moving to San Francisco and releasing Extremis 3.0 onto the citizens of that city.

Marvel’s ‘Avengers NOW!’

In the last week the comic book community has been rocked by news of big changes to some of Marvel’s biggest characters. We first received news of a big change to the “Thor” mythos. The god of thunder is setting down his hammer allowing for a new worthy wielder to step forward. Who is the mystery woman? Nobody yet knows, not even Odin.

The change train kept rolling down the track with news that Steve Rogers will lose what makes him super, becoming a mundane human being like the rest of us. His advanced age and lack of enhanced ability make him more suited for defending America from behind a desk and a predecessor must be named. Sam Wilson, The Falcon, will take up the mantle becoming the new Captain America.

In the aftershock of these two big announcements there were rumblings of a change to come for Iron Man as well, rounding out Marvel’s big three. Today those rumblings were confirmed with news of a new series titled “Superior Iron Man.” A common theme in comics is the justifiable concerns that come along with so much power being held by so few individuals. We’ll see the reality of those concerns come to fruition in this series when Tony Stark unleashes the extremis virus on the citizens of San Francisco. Starks intentions are noble, he unleashes the virus in an attempt to realize the cities full potential, but does his reach exceed his grasp? Will we see Stark’s ambitions turn him from hero to villain?

..

These changes, a part of Marvel’s “Avengers NOW!” initiative, will begin in October in each of the respective series and it seems only likely that they will reverberate through the entire Marvel universe. Exciting things are coming.

One can’t help but wonder if these changes will echo into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s no secret that the actors currently portraying Marvel’s most popular characters won’t be doing so forever. Eventually RDJ, Evans, and Hemsworth will move on to other projects, this would provide a workable exit strategy for Marvel to be able to maintain a continuous story without having to re-cast or reboot.

You can see Marvel’s official press release below and remember to add these series to your hold. I suspect you’ll want these pieces of comic book history on your shelves or in your long boxes for years to come.

Marvel Comics Announces ‘Superior Iron Man’

Marvel Comics keeps the crazy announcements coming and whether they’re pleasing fans or not, the house of ideas is set on not getting stagnant. Tony Stark is going to inadvertently follow Matt Murdock to the West Coast. This is all happening with a bunch of other big changes around the Marvel Universe but not every Marvel character can be “Superior”. The announcement is short and simple so here it is in full from Marvel Entertainment below. Look for “Superior Iron Man” this November in a comic book shop near you.

MARVEL PROUDLY ANNOUNCES SUPERIOR IRON MAN!

New York, NY – July 17th, 2014 – Marvel is proud to announce the release of Superior Iron Man #1 by series writer Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us) and series artist Yildiray Çinar (Supergirl). Beginning in November 2014, Tony Stark will give into his ego and return to his billionaire playboy roots of self-obsession and superficiality.

Senior Editor Mark “Panic” Paniccia says, “What’s fun about Superior Iron Man is we get to see Tony Stark in a different mode. He’s very much like he was before Iron Man’s origin, before Tony became a Super Hero…a narcissistic, selfish profiteer. And Tom Taylor is having a blast with this personality, giving us an Iron Man that is bound to ruffle some fans’ feathers but will secretly—I think—find to be a guilty pleasure.”

“He’s self-obsessed. Cunning. Superficial. Superior,” explains writer Tom Taylor. “He has given Extremis to the people. Extremis can now be downloaded as a mobile app through any smart device in San Francisco and this creates Tony’s idea of a Utopia, which he is very happy to be at the heart of. But not everyone is buying Tony’s Paradise.

Superior Iron Man will also feature recent “City by the Bay” transplant – Daredevil!

“Daredevil may be blind but he can see the cracks in Stark’s Brave New World,” says Taylor. “In a way this is all an allegory for the technology that now rules our lives. The corruption that comes from this technology and the dependence we each have on it.”

For more details on Superior Iron Man, All-New Captain America and Thor, visit the Avengers NOW! hub on Marvel.com for interviews with Rick Remender, Jason Aaron and more.

Superior Iron Man #1 will be available this November in all local comic book retailers and available in the Marvel Digital Comics Store.
