REVIEW: Savage Dragon #169

There is a lot to be said about long-running series needing a jumping on point. One thing I have always appreciated about Savage Dragon is that even if you jump into the middle of a storyline, you can get acclimated very quickly. This issue is actually a mixture of both. This, as the cover says is the aftermath of the “Emperor Dragon” storyline, wherein the title character regains his original personality. A hint: he’s not a nice guy. Last issue, that character is pretty certainly dead. Left to pick up the pieces is Dragon/Kurr’s son, Malcom Dragon, giving us an almost entirely new status quo.

Malcom has pretty much been a main protagonist in the book for a few issues now anyway, what with daddy turning into a mass-murdering psychopath. This issue mainly deals with Malcolm, and to a less extent his sister Angel, dealing with the fallout of such a public figure A. going nuts, and B. subsequently dying. That means the issue is a lot of talking and character development. This is not a bad thing, as Erik Larsen’s characters are rich, with full histories. They are interesting to watch, even so, the book’s bread and butter are the over-the-top action scenes. This issue has a bit of that too, so don’t feel too bad.

As the tail-end of the tale, Malcolm gets to confront the leader of his alien heritage, and the results of this encounter are quite interesting. Also intriguing is the last page setup for the role Malcolm and Angel will be playing in the book. I won’t give it away, but it opens up a multitude of story opportunities for Larsen, and I am eager to see where he goes with it. And, for those of you wondering is Dragon will ever be back, well, in the world of Savage Dragon, dead means dead, but that doesn’t mean there are clever ways around it. You’ll have to pick up the book to get my meaning, though.

Also included in the book is the always experimental Savage Dragon Funnies, this is not usually my cup of tea, and this month is no exception, but that doesn’t mean it is bad by any means. The story is without dialog, but is conveyed very well by writer/artist Pedro Carmago. It’s also a great showcase for creators who would probably not get their work seen by that large of an audience otherwise.

My bottom line is: if you’re a Savage Dragon fan, you’ve already picked this up. If you are not, then this is the perfect time to get on the bandwagon and see what this crazy (in a good way) book is all about.

McFarlane Toys to Bring “THE WALKING DEAD” Action Figure Lines to Fans Worldwide

Collectibles from AMC’s original TV Series and Robert Kirkman’s Bestselling Comic Coming Fall 2011

Tempe, Ariz.— February 10, 2011 – In one the most creative action figure collaborations of 2011, McFarlane Toys announced today two separate deals concerning the licensing rights of “The Walking Dead.” The first is with AMC to create action figures based on the original series that premiered on the network in October of last year. The second is with Robert Kirkman to also create action figures based on the comic-book series created by him. This is the first time action figures have been produced and both lines are available to retailers this Fall.

“Kirkman has created a world that is macabre and suspenseful with deeply-drawn characters: both human and zombies,” said Todd McFarlane, McFarlane Toys, creative force and CEO. “Working with the creative talents of Kirkman and AMC, we have planned figures lines that authentically represent both the television and comic series – including mind-blowing details, likenesses and play action. We want to push the envelope so that the true essence of ‘The Walking Dead’ series is captured.”

The first series of deluxe 6-inch figures is releasing in September 2011, includes four fan-favorite characters from the Image comic book including:

THE WALKING DEAD Series 1
Officer Rick Grimes
Michonne
Zombie Lurker
Zombie Roamer

The second series of deluxe 6-inch figures is revealed in November 2011 and introduces four figures based on AMC’s original drama including:

THE WALKING DEAD Series 2
Deputy Rick Grimes
Daryl Dixon
Zombie Walker
Zombie Biter

Each human figure includes multiple interchangeable accessories and several points of articulation for limitless possibility and customization. Each zombie figure features unique, gory, play action such as exploding heads and removable limbs. Figures are expected to sell for around $14.99 at retailers nationwide.

“I simply cannot contain my excitement over working with McFarlane Toys,” said Robert Kirkman, creator of “The Walking Dead” comic-book series. “For nearly two decades McFarlane Toys have proven themselves to be leading the pack when it comes to making cool looking, innovative toys, and I’m thrilled that they’re going to continue to do so with ‘The Walking Dead.”

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. The series tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive. AMC’s “The Walking Dead” attracted 3.5 million adults in the 18-49 demo making it the most watched drama series in basic cable history for the demo. The series was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.

The Geek Show #4

Every week for about 2 1/2 years the fellows from the Geek Show Podcast have been bringing you an excellent, hilarious, geeky hour of geekiness every week. For almost two of those years, I have been producing a video version of their show for Xfinity’s Utah On Demand system. Their licensing agreement was such that the content was exclusive to them, but we’ve since worked it so that it is only a window of exclusivity and now we’ll be getting the show every week on the internet.

Watch fresh episodes on Xfinity – Utah On Demand – SL Alternative. It looks best on a TV!

Be sure to check out the Geek Show website and subscribe to their podcast. The show’s regular panelists includes Kerry Jackson, host of X96′s Radio From Hell, Leigh George Kade from Grimmleigh’s Fiends, Shannon Barnson, my co-host at the Pub Quiz, Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin from the Big Movie Mouth-Off, and Scott Pierce, television critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

This week, they had a special guest on the program, Jackie Kashian. She’s a standup comedian and a geek podcaster. Her podcast is The Dork Forest.

As a warning, these appear in their original NSFW form.

Lots of comics were discussed during this episode, particularly Chew from Image Comics, The Unwritten from DC Comics, and Batroc the Leaper…

And part 2…

REVIEW: Li’l Depressed Boy #1

One of the things I love about Image Comics is that of the bigger publishers, they are the ones who will let a smaller creator publish their work and expose it to a wider audience. Now, to be honest, I hadn’t even heard of Li’l Depressed Boy, but it showed up in the Image Previews for this week, and LDB was shown. Something about it spoke to me, so I decided to take the plunge and buy it. I am very glad I did.

The story of Li’l Depressed Boy stars the titular LDB, who just happens to be a ragdoll. You might think that’s an odd choice, but in making the main character a ragdoll, artist Sina Grace can really show his emotional states in a way that just wouldn’t work on a normal human face. The writing and coloring by S. Steven Struble is no slouch either. Li’l Depressed Boy in the space of a few pages seems like a real character to me, someone I can relate to.

The tale itself could be considered a slice-of-life tale of well, a little depressed boy. From the get-go though, our LDB is determined to get out of his funk. I found it rather inspiring that he actually tries to better his station in life rather than wallowing in self-pity. Things are going ok, and then he meets a girl. He immediately seems infatuated with her, and who can blame him?

Anyway it’s a quick meeting, but she leaves an impression on our LDB. He goes on with life, hanging with friends, and meets the girl again at the laundromat. From there, the conversation flows nicely and culminates in a “date” at a concert.  It goes pretty well, culminating in a late-night feast at the local diner.

The story ends when the date does, and I’m unsure of how it’ll play out. Is LDB making a mountain out of a molehill, or is what he feels for her real? I am not sure, but I am really excited to find out. I know my synopsis is a bit light, but this is a story that needs to be experienced firsthand. So much so that I’m going to go over to http://www.lildepressedboy.com and read some more. I suggest you do too. And hey if you like it, throw the creators a few bucks, they deserve it.

Li’l Depressed Boy #1 is on sale now from Image Comics for $2.99.

Image Comics “Sneak Peaks”

You can expect this release information to start coming before new comic Tuesday, unfortunately my work load has kept me buried trying to meet other deadlines.  Weak apologies aside here is what Image has in stock for us this week. After perusing the list I think my favorite is obviously going to be Walking Dead, but I think Lil’ Depressed Boy shows promise as well, I may have to get permission from Mrs. Zombietron to add this to my pile for the week.

Review: Spawn 200

Spoiler Alert:

I’ll probably ruin elements of the story for those of you following closely.

Being the mocked Spawn fan on the site, Image was good enough to present us with a review copy of Spawn issue 200. First things first, I have to put up a mild disclaimer that I haven’t read the Spawn series since somewhere around issue 165 or so, (Spawn had taken a mild break and gone to the wild west). Even though I enjoy the artwork from every issue the story was a little beyond me and I wanted Al Simmons to come back. 200 continues with Al Simmons somehow stripping himself of the Necroplasm and being thrown into some form of purgatory. This separation created the Omega Spawn (pictured below) which is basically the focused hatred and rage of Al Simmons with unlimited powers, that had begun slaughtering the legions of hell and became the ruler, (seeing as at some point Malebolgia went missing.)

Anywho with a new Spawn being dropped to earth to replace Al Simmons The Clown has a new plan to help him power up and take him back through the portal and over throw Hell and Earth in some bizarre scheme, but he first has to overcome “The Freak” who is really Malebolgia in a different form preparing to return to hell….

So…. my thoughts are pretty simple on this, the Spawn universe was always a huge draw for me mainly with the epic battle between heaven and hell. Their interesting take on the War between the two. I love the illustration, use of color, and overall design of the book. Issue 200 takes Spawn back to its cover roots a little bit, following the white backgrounding, with a basic character on the front similar to the initial line up of the book. The nice thing about issue 200 is even if you haven’t been up to date with the Spawn world, (like being 35 or so issues behind) you are caught up with a quick previously on Spawn style first page and then pulled into the story. The book is beautifully illustrated, has a solid story and really is a good read. Whether or not you find yourself attracted to ICP, (there is a better chance of me being found humping a meat grinder than associating myself with their particular brand of filth.) You will still find this issue worth a buy, and entertaining to listen through.

The second printing releases Feb 3, and judging by how quickly the first round sold out, I’d have the funds ready and be at your local comic shop that day.

Secret Origins Tuesday — Savage Dragon?!

If you’re a regular follower of this column, you may know that sometimes I like to feature a character whose origins are tied into a current storyline. Today’s column is one of those. Unfortunately, those of you who were looking forward to the more lighthearted fare I promised last week will have to wait longer, in the meantime, have some ultra-violence as I relate to you the Secret Origin of Emperor Kurr!

Yes, Emperor Kurr. Regardless of what the title might say, this is “his” story. As we go on, you’ll realize why. We open on a starship orbiting the Earth. The Emperor orders all of its inhabitants be killed! You see, Kurr is of a race of nomadic aliens, dedicated to finding a planet they can call home. This is an admirable, if somewhat lofty, goal. Kurr wants his orders carried out immediately, but thankfully for those of us who live here on Earth, his advisors are a bit more level-headed.

Emperor Kurr, rocking the codpiece.

The advisors are very reasonable with their objections. Arguments like, there are billions of humans, it is against their beliefs to commit genocide, the fact that their prophecies say another planet will come along, Kurr is having none if it though, He says he wants this planet. There is more dissension in the ranks, so Kurr resorts to threats. This puts his advisors in line for the time being, but it also makes them see that their leader is an insane, psychopathic glory hound. They want to show him the error of his ways, they have the terrestrial broadcasts, but Kurr refuses to watch them. Drastic measures are to be taken and the advisors plan to abduct a human to prove how similar the two races really are.

In the meantime, Kurr addresses his empire. He tells them Earth is inhabited by primitive life, and while it pains him to do it, he has decided to eradicate them for the good of his people. What a guy. He then leads them in prayer, which given the scene directly before this one makes you want to kick him in the alien nutsack. Back in the lab, we see out two de facto protagonists have obtained a specimen.

Behold, The Savior of the Human Race! (no, really)

Through exposition, we find that our wayward human here is nearly genetically identical, aside from pigment and fin-heads. While this news is remarkable, our heroes realize that Kurr is way too far gone to listen to reason, and have to proceed a different way. It’s revealed that Kurr is one of the “chosen ones” a genetic offshoot of their race that are so adaptable, that their line are the default rulers of finny society. If only Kurr had an heir… that’s where poor, poor Geeta comes in.  She makes her way to Kurr’s bedchamber and offers herself to him. Kurr informs her she does so at her peril, but knowing her duty she does so anyway. She may have wanted to rethink that…

There's a head joke here, but this scene is just too gruesome for jokes.

Kurr’s aides/advisors come to clean up the scene, remarking again to themselves how far off the deep their emperor has gone. Hope is not lost though. Weiko and Rech, our heroes have managed to salvage a fertilized egg from Geeta’s remains. Her sacrifice wasn’t in vain. So, now our guys have their heir, what to do about the Kurr problem? That’s where Human McNaughtyBits from earlier comes in.

But wait! Kurr is as cunning as he is ruthless, and has a contingency plan if Rech and Weiko don’t come through as soon as he wants.

I guess if you're an Image character, bug guns are inevitable.

Kurr offers the ultimatum that his doomsday weapon will be used if Weiko and Rech don’t have an alternative solution within a day. It seems obvious to me that he knows they’re up to something and is just looking for an excuse for carnage. A female office, Lorella points out that they’ve been scouting a planet for thousands of years, what is a couple more days for our boys to come up with a more amicable solution? His answer is to invite her to his bedchamber later. In the meantime Kurr goes to check on our lovable saviors. They show him their pet human, trying a last-ditch effort to appeal to his, well not his humanity, but to his “whatever his species is-ity”. It goes about as well as expected.

It isn't looking good for humanity, kids!

As if on cue, Weiko and Rech run and hide. You might think they’ve wussed out, but as soon as he finds and grabs Lorella, Kurr is shot in the head by Rech. Kurr is incredibly resistant to damage though, so you may think it’s about time to say goodbye to our “heroes” and you’d be right, but while Kurr is beating down Rech, Weiko literally blows part of Kurr’s brain out.

"It was either this or a hole in the... waitaminnit!"

Still, this does not kill Kurr. His brain cells are already regenerating, so it is decided since he now has no memory, to fill it with the five days of satellite feed they’ve gotten from Earth! Also, our schemers give Kurr as vasectomy , which should hold unless Kurr loses his lower extremities and has them grow back (spoiler: it happens eventually!). Weiko and Rech decide to dump him on Earth as now he’d actually fit in more there. I guess that make sense, but they are planning on unleashing an amnesiac genocidal maniac on an unsuspecting populace, so maybe they aren’t as virtuous as first thought. As a final act, Rech and Weiko self destruct their lab with them in it.

Later, we cut to Lorella addressing the empire, explaining their beloved emperor is dead, but has left an heir. Earth is left, as it is also revealed to the public at large that hey, humanity isn’t that primitive. The fin-heads leave, and all is well or is it?

The beginning?

And that ends this tale, but soon after, the amnesiac is discovered by the Chicago PD, and with no memory of past events take the name Dragon and becomes quite a likable guy. He becomes a cop, a family man and various other things over the course of his career, if you thought he was reprehensible in this story, try the normal Savage Dragon run, he’s like the complete opposite. Well, except for current issues where his brain was devoured and regenerated again to where Kurr resurfaces, but hey that’s another story!

This tale was first told in the Image Comics 10th Anniversary Hardcover, and was reprinted in Savage Dragon #0.

TAG TEAM THURSDAY: Marineman #1

Wait no longer, Tag Team Thursday is finally here! This week Shaz-Bot and Clobbet-Tron discuss Marineman #1.

C-T: Oh no! It’s Aquaman in a Miracleman outfit! Seriously though, I’ve loved Ian Churchill’s previous work on Superman, Supergirl, and Deadpool and the cover to this looks fantastic.

S-B: I am not as familiar with Churchill, though I have heard of him, I like the art style to be sure, cartoony, but not cartoonish, if you catch my meaning.

WHAT”S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS?

C-T: I was hoping for action right from the start, instead we get a 3 page prologue that starts with 18 huge dialogue balloons.

S-B: Yeah, that was really off-putting. I was like, “Hello, wall of text!” Once I hunkered down and read it though, it flowed pretty well, like I was reading a segment on ESPN 3.

C-T: Well put. It’s always nice to get a little mystery in the prologue before the setup splash page. Steve Ocean isn’t the most creative name for an oceanographer, but he doesn’t seem to have much in common with Aquaman or Prince Namor either.

S-B: A lot of the names are water-based puns though, his buddy has the last name of Clearwater. It’s kind of refreshing to read a book that doesn’t take itself super seriously. Anyway, I agree he doesn’t really have too much in common with other water-based heroes. He doesn’t seem to have any powers, and is kind of like an underwater Steve Irwin. Speaking of, I know more about sharks than I ever did before, thanks to this comic.

SUPERPOWERS?

C-T: I was surprised at the amount of shark knowledge slipped in the aquarium scene as well. Despite the lack of powers there’s an element of heroism in his actions and the secrecy of his father hiding out in Marine Base Alpha only adds to the mystery.

Entering Marine Base Alpha

S-B: Yup. It started to get really intriguing there near the end…

C-T: I thought it ended quite abruptly however. Did you read the supplemental material? Sometimes the little things at the end of an issue really wrap it up for me and make the story a little more interesting, definitely the case here

S-B: Just when things were picking up, it’s like you hit a brick wall. I know you’re supposed to leave people wanting more, but wow, that was abrupt. As for the stuff in the back, that’s what convinced me to not just outright dismiss the book. I love hearing how a book came to be, and knowing that a creator puts his heart and soul into a project makes me want to support them.

C-T: I really enjoyed the artwork and thought the story flowed fairly well, I just hope it picks up in the next issue, which I plan to read.

S-B: I have a feeling it will pick up next issue, and I’m willing to pick it up to find out.

C-T: Yeah, I don’t feel like you have to work very hard to enjoy this one, you get what you put into it!

S-B: My bottom line is, if you’re willing to give it a shot, this book is definitely worth your time.

That’s a solid recommendation from this tag team, check out Ian Churchill’s Marine man #1 from Image Comics this week!
