HyperZord Reads a Bunch of Image Comics

Six issues this week from a bunch of different weeks.

Trailblazer (One-Shot)

This is a cool little story about an assassin who travels back to the old west to become a sheriff. It’s a short story and a fun one. There’s something to be said for short stories in comics. You don’t really find them too often because you tend to need strong selling series, but I’m liking that there are more one shots now a days. Good read.

When does this come out: July 6th
Cost: 5.99
Will I read on: No need
Will I buy it: Yes

Reed Gunther #2: In a Stalac-Tight Spot!

We have Reed Gunther and Sterling’s second adventure as they ride into an old west town to hear there’s treasure in them there hills. A out of town prospector is looking for volunteers to go get the treasure and our boy Reed decides he’s up to the task, but there’s something fishy going on. Plus Starla comes to help out and it seems she’ll probably be joining the misfits through their adventures. I am loving these books, they have a great mix of humor and adventure and some good artwork taboot. Plus the Houghton brothers seem to know where they want to go with the story so it’s looking to be a good series going forward. Each story can be told as a one off so if you can’t find the first issue go ahead and start with the second.

When does this come out: July 6
Cost: 2.99
Will I read on: Definitely, I’m hooked.
Will I buy it: Most definitely

Super Dinosaur #3

Usually I don’t try and start series unless I’m able to get a hold of the first issue but when I saw that this comic was being done by Robert Kirkman I thought I might want to give it a try. I don’t think I’ve missed much but basically it’s about a boy named Derek and his pal “Super Dinosaur”, a T-Rex which can communicate with humans and has special robot suits it can put on to fight against the other evil super dinosaurs. Apparently Derek’s father and his partner found a way to give dinosaur’s mental abilities but the partner turned evil. I may not have that exactly right since I didn’t read the first two, but the comic does make sense and it’s a good combination of fun and intelligent.

When does this come out: June 29th (It apparently sold out)
Cost: 2.99
Will I read on: Yes
Will I buy it: Probably will wait for the Trade.

50 Girls 50 #2

In this second installment from Frank Cho and the gang the women find themselves in even more trouble. There’s a great gag at the very beginning when they announce the trouble and the main woman looks at the audience and says “Is anyone surprised at this point? I mean, really?” The series is still strong and it’s still selling very well so you might as well jump on the train. The art is fantastic and the women’s curves are very well done.

When does this come out: July 6th
Cost: 2.99
Will I read on: Indeed
Will I buy it: Probably will wait for the trade.

Samurai’s Blood #2

I had hoped very much that the second issue would be better then the first, however I was wrong, the second was worse then the first and even though this is only 6 issues long I don’t think I’ll continue reading. The book seems very self important and that is where the flaw is, all of the characters are incredibly one sided and do everything you expect them to do.

When does this come out: July 13
Cost: 2.99
Will I read on: Probably not
Will I buy it: No

The Red Wing #1

I love time travel, I just do, and as long as the writer has some sense of what he is doing then I usually like where they are going with it. The Red Wing is set in a world where Time Travel ended up leading to lots of Wars. Time Travel is just used to help fight the fight against the unknown danger. It also follows the travels of one particular man who goes through the army system to become a time traveler. The best thing I can say for this book is the overall pacing. The overall feel of the story is very strong and it makes me very excited to see where this is going. Plus this is the first part of a four part series and I love short series. I recommend this to any time travel fans.

When does this come out: July 13th
Cost: 3.50
Will I read on: Very likely
Will I buy it: Quite Possible

As you can see, there are TONS of fantastic titles available this week. If you’re wondering about what other titles are available for purchase this week, you can check out the full list HERE.

HyperZord Reads Image: Vol 2

If you don’t know the deal you can read last week’s first volume. Again I’ll be going worst to first. Though I’m going worst to first, the worst is quite good this week.

All Nighter #1: A pretty decent first showing from writer/artist David Hahn. The story All Nighter is about a group of 20 somethings but in particular the main character Kit who has trouble with relationships and her past of theft. The book is fine at the moment but does seem to mostly be an introduction. You can actually download the complete first issue at David Hahn’s Website.

When does this come out: June 22
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: With 5 currently planned I’d like to see where this goes.
Will I buy it: I’m going to wait to see where it goes but will probably pick up the trade if it turns out really good.

50 Girls 50 #1: Apparently this is old news to everyone else, but for those like me who don’t know what’s going on. Frank Cho who is famous for Liberty Meadows and Doug Murray combined to make a comic with lots of women in space. They did a contest to find their artist. And apparently this book went on sale June 1st and has already sold out. So if you haven’t heard about it apparently you like me need to pick it up. I do warn that for the younger viewers it does have women continually losing their clothes every page until they’re eventually partially naked. The story was good and it seems to be going somewhere and as it has Cho behind it I think it’ll be a good series.

When does this come out: It’s getting a second printing July 6th
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: Indeed
Will I buy it: Indeed

Witch Doctor #1: Apparently Robert Kirkman has started a company within Image called SKYBOUND, and this comic is within that group. This comic like many other things Skybound has put out is really good. The art is strong and the characters are really cool. I think everyone should check out this first issue and see if you want to keep reading.

When does this come out: June 22nd
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: Definitely
Will I buy it: Yes indeed.

Reed Gunther #1: This is my favorite book I read this week. It did come out back on June 1st so I am a little late to the game. This book is a very fun tale of a cowboy and his bear friend taking on a giant snake. It has a good mix of humor and story and it seems to be going to some really cool places. This comic also has a pretty cool website.

When does this come out: Already came out. June 1st.
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: Very excited to, yes.
Will I buy it: Most definitely.

Image Comics Brings Back The Cold War

COLD WAR IS COOL IN PIGS

McCool, Cosby & Tamura Set to Activate KGB Cuban Sleeper Cell in September

Berkeley, CA – 15 June 2011 – When the second generation of a loyal KGB sleeper cell is given the signal, they must finish the mission that they have been raised their entire lives to complete: overthrow The United States of America, no matter what it takes. Writers Ben McCool (CHOKER, MEMOIR) and Nate Cosby (Jim Henson’s Storyteller) are the creative minds behind this new ongoing series from Image Comics, a character-driven modern espionage thriller entitled PIGS.

The two co-creators enlisted the stylish and gritty storytelling talents of newcomer artist Breno Tamura to deftly handle interiors and an all-star cast to create cover art. Jock (The Losers), Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics) and Amanda Conner (THE PRO, Power Girl) have already turned out powerful images for the first three covers, and Ben Templesmith (CHOKER, FELL), Humberto Ramos (Crimson, Amazing Spiderman) and Becky Cloonan (Demo, American Virgin) have signed on to contribute cover art as well.

“PIGS is as much a study of these very unique characters as it is a fast-paced, action-packed story of espionage,” explained McCool. “Sure, the Pigs are terrorists, and their mission is set to leave a trail of devastation in their wake. But what if not every member of the group has the same agenda? Is it possible that there’s a sleeper within the sleeper cell…?”

“Our goal is to make the reader uncomfortable,” added Cosby. “The ‘heroes’ in PIGS are terrorists that’ve been trained their entire lives to annihilate your way of life and kill you if necessary. But at the same time, these characters have souls, unique personalities, senses of humor. The book is about the practical application of terrorism, and what it takes for a person to dedicate their life to destruction.”

The five young anti-heroes in PIGS are a band of communist operatives who intend to finish what the previous generation began after the Bay of Pigs invasion. While they may find themselves on the road to successfully completing their potentially catastrophic suicide mission, for the first time in their lives they have also come face-to-face with the reality of the country that they have been trained to hate. The characters of PIGS are human weapons who must decide how or if they can pull the trigger when their moment comes at last.

PIGS #1 (JUL110432), a 32-page full blown, full color espionage comic book for $2.99, is available to order in the July edition of Diamond Previews catalog, and will be at a comic store near you on September 14, 2011.

I love a good Cold War story. I read Tom Clancy and John Le’Carre novels growing up and studied Post-War Europe and Communism in college so I’m pretty intriuged by this book and really dig the idea of looking at things from agents point of view. Being raised in America and turning on them can’t be easy. We’ve had a taste of this kind of thing in books by Tom Clancy (Teeth Of The Tiger) and even Chuck Palahniuk (Pygmy) and just in countless video games this year we are having wars in America so its no surprise that a comic will be breaching this territory but I think it will be able to flesh out the story in a more interesting and detailed way. However, the “sleeper agent with sleeper cell” turns me off a little. Seems like a plot point over done a lot to me but it could turn out interestingly enough. Guess we will find out come September.

Image Comics for September, 2011!

While there is a veritable f—ton of books from Image Comics coming in September, I thought I’d point out a few that interest me. Cory Walker is returning to Invincible! Ryan Ottley has been on the book long enough that I consider the “world” of Invincible more his than Walker’s, but it’ll still be nice to see the original creative team back together. Also of note is a new book by Jay Faerber, who is a writer I always enjoy. You’ve got your Witchblade anniversary issue, as well. While I’m not into the character, I know there are plenty who are, so that’s for you. The new Robert Kirkman/Rob Liefeld book The Infinite is apparently available in regular and extra crispy deluxe editions. I won’t question that decision, because I know someone’s going to buy it. At any rate, take an hour or so to pore over this massive cache of comic craziness, and if you see anything you like, tell your friendly neighborhood comic shop to order them. And tell ‘im Shaz-Bot sent you!

“WITCH DOCTOR has the potential to be the next great horror story in the comic industry.” – Bloody Disgusting

This Week at the Comic Shop!

Hello again everyone! I’m back to talk comics with you. For the time being, until I really get into the swing of things, I’m going to be talking about comics that I read and am excited to see out this week, and also talking about some of the new comics out this week.

There’s no better way to start this than to just jump right in, so without further adieu, I give you my comic picks for the week!

Batgirl #22- Stephanie Brown has been one of my favorite incarnations of Batgirl from the start. She’s funny, cute, and smart but at her core, she’s kind of a ditzy blonde. She’s constantly trying to prove herself, and that’s one of the things I love about her character. Also, the interactions between her and Damian, are some of the funniest dialogue I’ve ever read. This month, Stephanie goes to London on a top-secret assignment. When the Greenwhich Mean is stolen, it’s up to Batgirl and Squire to save the U.K.!

Cinderella Fables Are Forever #5 (of 6)- Cinderella, Prince Charming’s third wife, (yup, THAT Cinderella) is an assassin and spy when she’s not running her shoe store, The Glass Slipper. In this issue, Cinderella and Ivan Durack have tracked her longtime nemesis from Switzerland to the Deadly Desert of Oz. Cinderella barely survived her last encounter with her nemesis, which begs the question; Will Cinderella survive until the end of this series?

Dr. Who #6- Welcome to Multiworld! A fluctuating rift complex filled with every historical location possible! Be a cowboy! A Roman! A knight! But when a crash-landing Sontaran survey vessel merges the rifts, the Doctor, Amy, and Rory each find themselves in different worlds-and in peril! And where did the Sontarans go?

Grimm Fairy Tales Myths and Legends #6- The Dream Eater continues its path of destruction tearing through the Grimm Fairy Tale universe and has now turned its attention to one of the most evil beings in all existence, Baba Yaga. Now Baba Yaga must join forces with her archenemy, the guardian of Earth, Samantha, to put a stop to the Dream Eater once and for all.

Supergirl #65- Lois Lane contacts Supergirl about a series of mysterious disappearances on a college campus. When the girls discover the truth about who is behind the kidnappings, it puts Supergirl in the path of one of DCU’s greatest villains.

Tiny Titans #41- Tiny Titans is one of my most beloved comic book series ever. It’s great for kids and adults alike. Art Baltazar, co-writer and artist of TT, is a great guy. I met him at NYCC last year, and he did a Ms. Marvel sketch for me in crayon, for free. He’s a full time art teacher, and he writes and draws TT in his “spare time”. This month is the all Flash issue. This issue also introduces Jessie Quick and features Inertia and Mas y Menos.

So, that’s what I’m reading this week. In addition to what I like there are also a number of DC’s “Flashpoint” limited series coming out. This list includes the following:

Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #1 (of 3)

Flashpoint: Grodd of War #1 (of 3)

Flashpoint: Legion of Doom starring Heatwave #1 (of 3)

Flashpoint Wonder Woman And The Furies #1 (of 3)

In other limited series news, Marvel is also launching an eight part series about everyone’s favorite Canadian Super Hero team, Alpha Flight!

Alpha Flight #1 (of 8)- Alpha Flight has long been the protector of an entire nation…but what happens when that nation needs to be protected from itself? Sasquatch, Snowbird, Northstar and Aurora have been joined by their revived allies Guardian, Vindicator, Shaman, and Marrina as the paragons and protectors of an entire nation. But as FEAR ITSELF takes over, their own country turns on the Flight and brands them traitors for the shocking actions of one of their closest allies. As the borders close and an entire nation hunts them down, will the newly reunited Alpha Flight survive?

In addition to all of these comics, the 14th trade paperback of “The Walking Dead” is also out this week, so make sure you pick it up, because you know you’ll have it read within an hour.

HyperZord Reads Image: Vol. 1

Of all the writers on Big Shiny Robot, when it comes to comics I would consider myself near the bottom of the barrel. I know a decent amount of characters but I can only name a handful of writers and probably only one or two artists. One of the things I do know is we here at Big Shiny Robot often get review copies of weekly image comics books and as a fan I do like to read these books. But when it comes to what I choose to read there’s little decision besides what the look of the cover is and what issue it is. So it is a crap shoot, I may have all good or all bad reviews, not really sure each week. This week I’ll be presenting them from worst to first and I have three books to review.

Graveyard of Empires #1: Afghanistan is known as the Graveyard of Empires and this comic does take place there. It follows a very Marine or Army type of story and I’ve never been very big on army type comics which is probably why I didn’t like this comic. However the final page of the comic does have a really interesting moment which is what is going to be the big plot twist in the series. If I do read the second issue I’ll reveal what this twist is. You can look it up but I won’t spoil it here.

When does this come out: June 15
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: At least one more to see if this plot is going anywhere.
Will I buy it: Probably not. Unless the second issue is very strong I’ll be skipping it.

Samurai’s Blood #1: This comic is one of those Samurai in Japan comics which Japanese companies tend to do better. This one does have a decent start, with the man deciding to kill everyone in the family and one man living through it. One of the things I do like is that this is a 6 issue series which makes me more willing to read it all. The art is also pretty good so I think I’ll be keeping up with it.

When does this come out: June 8
Cost: $1.00
Will I read on: Being as how it’s just 6 issues I will definitely read on.
Will I buy it: The price is good and there are only six issues. This is one I’ll pick up.

Deadlands: The Devil’s Six Gun — This is my favorite book of the week. It’s a one shot which is always something I like. Looking it up it seems there are going to be a number of different Deadlands comics throughout the summer. Different writers and artists doing different western/steampunk type comics. This one is about an inventor looking to create a weapon which can kill the devil. The writing is really good and the story is quite excellent. This one does make me excited to check out the rest of the series this summer. It also has a small comic at the end which has 4 parts so I imagine they’ll show up in other one shots.

When does this come out: June 15
Cost: $2.99
Will I read on: I’m excited to see where they go with this.
Will I buy it: Yes indeed.

IN STORES TODAY: Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors

A mere glance at the cover of Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors projects an endless stream of possibilities and “what ifs”  into the minds of even the most casual of comic book fans. Like a movie trailer that seems to tell you everything but knows you’ll still beg for more, this high concept gem is well worthy of the recent buzz it’s been receiving.

Again, the cover in many ways says it all – we’re clearly dealing with something akin to the Xavier institute for Gifted Youngsters but for aspiring Super-Villains. This use of a somewhat familiar setting along with a Masterpiece Theatre style introduction quickly orients the reader to the rich new world laid out before them before dropping you right in the middle of the drama. Literally, drama class where our antagonist protagonist Kid Nefarious cackles his best monologue while minding his enunciation and scraping for the punchiest adjectives.

While the comedic tone and character focus is set early on, the book wastes no time in bombarding the reader with scores of new villains and subplots touching off what I feel gives this book potential for real staying power: Universal appeal, plain and simple. It is far too rare that a comic hits the shelves that can challenge and entertain the youngest of readers without talking down to them while at the same time fully engaging adult readers without the use of hollow pop cultural references, sexual innuendo, poop jokes or grannies who can rap. It’s a delicate balance of Pixarian proportions but Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors pulls it off in spades.

While there is a whole lot of story crammed into this first issue it should be no shock to reveal that my favorite part was recess. You don’t have to scratch your head too long to figure out how cool recess at this school could be. Recess is where true colors emerge, cliques form and true baddies take shape, baddies like the Skull Brothers. In a school full of bad guys, the Skull Brothers are the baddest of the bad and they are sooo cool. Picture the Cobra Kai (Karate Kid) being adopted into the Baseball Furies (The Warriors) then possessed by the spirit of Lo Pan (Big Trouble in Little China) with Glen Danzig on vocals… The Skull Brothers are kind of like that – adding a deeper layer of fear and danger to school that knows a thing or two about both. This demonic duo with their dark and mysterious past promise plenty of cool plot threads to come while commanding the school yard scuffle that serves as this issue’s main action set piece.

Really and truly this first issue plants many enticing seeds and paints a vivid and exciting backdrop for many stories to come and I for one plan on being there for the ride – even if I have to steal my son’s copy.

I could go on but I’ll just cut to the chase here – I highly recommend you pick up Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors for yourself, for a human cub of some relation or for a perfect stranger. It’s hits shelves today via Image Comics and if you’re comic book shop doesn’t keep a decent stock of Image comics on the shelves, well I guess you’ll just have to start insisting that they do.

It’s been over 70 years since the world first began its research into creating a Super Soldier. In 2011, the United States successfully created not one, but two. The latest in US Black Ops, Project Red Spike discovered that through the manipulation and regulation of the adrenal glands the super soldier was one step closer. The first (surviving) successes of the program, two close friends Matt Cutler and Greg Dane, have been proven on the field to be everything that was wanting in the program. But what happens when an adrenaline regulator malfunctions? What happens should one man refuse to follow orders if he finds out the true price they had to pay for these abilities and goes AWOL? How do we stop him? What price becomes too high?
