The Wizeguy: Surprise!

The Walking Dead ended. Well, the touchstone Image Comics title, The Walking Dead came to its conclusion with issue #193. I assume it’s going to crawl out from under the dumpster for a few more “surprise” issues only to end for real at #200. Jokes aside…

Damn. Good for Kirkman.

“The Walking Dead has always been built on surprise. Not knowing what’s going to happen when you turn the page, who’s going to die, how they’re going to die … It’s been essential to the success of this series, Kirkman wrote. “It just felt wrong and against the very nature of this series not to make the actual end as surprising as all the big deaths.”

(Spoilers Ahead)

The conclusion, which serves as an epilogue for the Rick Grimes story, came with little to no warning, but Kirkman claims its time had come. In a day and age when everything is spoiled, this is actually a great move. To just respect the reader enough to let them experience an actual shock is pretty impressive. It might not work for everyone, but to kill off a 16 year old character without warning is almost unheard of these days, and worthy of some respect that it does fit so well with the history of this story.

Surprise!”

I hate surprises, you suck! This whole thing was a shitty stunt and marketing driven!”

But…if the market didn’t know about it how was it…oh never mind.”

In what effing universe is it wrong for a creator to end their art?

I know, I know. What a massive middle finger to the retailers that have supported the book for years. I’ve heard the chatter, TWD is still one of the best selling comics in the US, and suddenly with one day’s notice, retailers are getting left with the short end of the stick.

Think of it this way. This is more akin to advertising a trilogy of movies. When the second movie comes out, it turns out they finish off the story unexpectedly. Even though movie theaters thought the third movie would be coming out, they never ordered prints or posters or anything yet so the only money they lost is the imaginary money they would have gotten if they had sold tickets. The movie theater still has a blockbuster on their hands — probably more so due to the surprise of it — they just won’t get another one next summer. See also: Second and third printings, Trades, Hardcovers, etc.

It also isn’t the first time this has happened, by the way. Way back when Malibu was publishing the Ultraverse, they solicited about six issues of a book called called The Exiles...except the book actually came to an end with issue #4 when nearly all the characters die. In order to preserve the surprise, Malibu did the exact same thing Kirkman did: solicited fake issues with fake covers.

I hope fans get a conclusion they like, and that Kirkman sticks the landing like he did on Invincible. I can’t imagine the amazing catharsis he must feel ending two gigantic series’ within the last year. And hopefully, Kirkman uses some of that zombie money to make Invincible as a live action movie.

Interview with the Creators of ‘Axcend’

“Axcence” Published by Image Comics; Written by Shane Davis; Drawn by Shane Davis; Inked by Michelle Delecki; Colored by Morry Hollowell; Available October 7, 2015.

Shane Davis is a veteran of the comics world having drawn for both Marvel and DC on various titles including “Batman” and “Spider-Man” among others. His new series “Axcend” is creator owned and being printed by Image, the story follows three teenagers who are introduced to a game that gives them unexpected abilities and changes their lives.

Meanwhile the world is under constant threat of nuclear annihilation, peace has been achieved, but only by way of a firm boot heel on the planet’s collective neck. What will happen when these forces collide? The book is described as, “an epic sci-fi/thriller that’s like Tron meets Inception with a cheat code.”

In the first issue we meet Eric, our protagonist, a teenager mourning the loss of his twin brother. Eric uses video games to escape the feelings he’s experiencing and ends up getting access to a Beta that’s more than it seems. The artwork is gorgeous with a slight nineties feel and the interiors are just as good looking as the cover.

I recently had an opportunity to talk with Shane Davis and Michelle Delecki who are the creative forces behind the book.

..

BSR: This being creator owned, and you being a husband and wife team, I wondered if that had an impact on your creative process.

SD: We’ve worked together on a lot of covers and stuff for DC so this isn’t exactly the first time we’ve worked together. So you know, a lot of time with us in the studio together, which is kind of the norm because Michelle is an artist on her own, she does gallery paintings.

MD: In the studio we’re side by side so I can see what Shane’s working on and he can see what I’m working on and we provide constructive criticism so it’s almost like this symbiotic relationship. Because we both care very much about doing really good work and that’s how we roll in our studio. We just try to do the best that we can and we communicate as far as how to keep our work looking as good as we can.

SD: And with the project itself if I have an idea I can always bounce it off her head real quick. Or as we’re working on the book, as the story develops, I’m like well, I think this should happen or I come across a page and I’m like, maybe this will be a better viewpoint if I move it around to a different character or change a situation up here and Michelle’s always around to bounce ideas off of. Because with this project it’s not like I have an editor or even input from the publisher. I basically do what I want with “Axcend” and Image prints it. So it’s helpful to have, really it’s more than helpful, it’s a necessity to have somebody to bounce those ideas off of as you’re coming across these things. There are a lot of scenes you could tackle from multiple points of view and get the same information across in five or six ways. I have one scene in particular where I had to get across some information on this government program in the book called The R.U.N. Program and I was going to do it with the main character giving an oral report, then at the last minute I thought it would be better if the teacher is lecturing and he’s just not paying attention. So I can always just say he, is this more interesting to you? And I can always get input with that sort of dynamic with Michelle.

There’s probably good days and bad days just like anything. I’m sure there’s days where she probably wants to kill me, but overall it’s been a great experience.

MD: It’s not so bad, believe it or not we’re both pretty mellow. He tends to go to the gym a lot also so it’s like the classic Greek way of you’re doing your job and at the same time you air your brain out with some exercise. He tries to keeps me from being stagnant. It’s cool to have Shane over there and tell me, Hey Michelle you have to leave the drawing table because you’ll lose track of time, you forget to eat. And it’s great because between the two of us we keep each other in check.

SD: Yeah, yeah.

..

BSR: I wondered what stories, games, or art inspired you? What things did you draw from or are maybe paying homage to?

SD: You know, it’s weird, because probably the biggest to me, which nobody puts together, some of the things that inspired the story is the anime series’ that has nothing to do with it. I mean, I’m going to be tackling a lot of issues like bullying in schools and teen violence and stuff in the comic. A lot of that is just inspiration from current events in the world today. I’m definitely going to be tackling the globalization nuclear threat type situation that is in the world in the book itself. The world is kind of governed by this program called The R.U.N. Program which is seven nations after Reagan’s Star Wars program, built nuclear capable satellites. I kind of liked that sense of eighties kind of Cold War era type nuclear threat. But instead it’s a global peace nuclear threat.  Peace through brute force on a global scale. So there’s a lot inspiration from government issues throughout the years, growing up during the whole Cold War era and trying to mix that with world economy issues.

As far as video games themselves, I played a lot of video games as a kid. With “Axcend” they’re only in the video game for the first issue and I really just wanted to touch base on a mixture of all different video games. Probably most people in my age demographic play some kind of video game whether they know it or not whether it’s a cell phone game or a puzzle game. To me I think the first handheld video game was Rock, Paper, Scissors. It’s not even a video game but the idea of a game that you use your hands to play has always kind of been there in some way or another. So the whole video game of “Axcend” in the book is just homage to a lot of video games that most people may have played.

The book itself is more about crossing that line where reality ends and fantasy begins and telling a story about three teens. One of the players, the antagonist won’t really know when to stop playing. When he crosses over he becomes very disillusioned and he still wants to grow by killing heads of state or something to get XP.

I really wanted to play more with game violence and teen violence and trying to connect those two. There’s a lot of debate about if violent video games have been influencing more violent acts by teens which everyone has their own opinions and theories on. I didn’t want to make the book completely about that but that theme will impact one of the characters in the book.

Me personally myself I like everything from old classic “Mario” to “Resident Evil” games to fighting games like “Street Fighter” and “Tekken.” I’ve kind of played all kinds of games, I’ve kind of played video games most of my life.

MD: You know, we did do a nod to some fighting games. I personally like fighting games a lot. I grew up with your “Mortal Kombat,” your “Street Fighter” then you had your “Tekken.” We did a nod to the fighting games in our VS. covers. It’s like a B cover, we have our standard cover but our variant covers you’ll have the option to select a cover featuring one of the main five characters of the book.

SD: They interlock. Cover one will interlock with cover two and they make a VS. screen. There’s a V on cover one and an S on cover two and they slide together to make a fighting screen. You can rotate them around and say, this character is fighting this character. It was something I hadn’t seen done and it’s a huge nod to all those classic fighting games.

I don’t like the perfect hero, to me there’s nothing more interesting than a young person with a broken moral compass.

BSR: You mentioned a minute ago you wanted to touch on a lot of different topics. I wondered with you having the freedom that you have with Image, is there anything you want to maybe touch on that you weren’t able to touch on in the past?

SD: Well, yes and no, I’m going to be touching on teen depression a lot with the book. It’s kind of funny, a lot of books try to touch on it but they use it as a stepping stone for the character’s motivations to swing over Gotham City or for Spider-Man to stop a super villain. A lot of these characters have been built off of loss, I did that with the main character in the book but the book doesn’t really feature super heroes.

There are losses in your life, the main character is a surviving twin and I thought the idea of a twin brother that survived the death of the other one, whose social skills were built off of being a twin. You know they’re always sharing clothes as kids and answering each other’s questions and always being handled as a set of two. Our character is a year after his brother’s death and I found it to make an interesting character and in Marvel or DC comics they’ll say like, Uncle Ben died and Spider-Man will feel guilty but with this I kind of focused not so much on the guilt or the motivation but how did that impact the character’s social skills and going forward how does the rest of the world treat him because he’s half of what they knew.

Stuff like that is a little bit on the heavier side that I don’t think I could do on a corporate comic level. And there’s some other things again with depression I was able to deal with that in the comic and I think they’re real strong character issues that define the characters. There are other characters that I don’t really talk about in a lot of interviews but our co-op second protagonist that will premier in issue two, Rain, she’s actually like a pop star who is kind of on the edge with drug abusing and a lot of pressure with tabloids. She’s really into gaming, she’s kind of like if YouTube and Twitch had a baby. She has as many fans who like her for her gaming as they do for her pop music and live shows she puts on with her hologram body. She’s kind of like a pop star geek girl. And we get to deal with a lot of those issues with her also just with social networking bullying and tabloid bullying.

All the three main players are all anywhere from seventeen to nineteen, relatively late teens and I’ll be dealing with different bullying issues with all three. I find that character age very interesting because of teen angst. Their viewpoints to the world are usually so self-centered it makes them very energetic and, to me, entertaining. I just find it very interesting to play with that age group.

BSR: That makes sense. Reading it, I wondered if the other two characters had their own baggage and maybe if that was related to why they were selected for the game.

SD: Yeah, I don’t talk about this a lot because I think it’s harder to pitch but the first issue surrounds Eric, and the second issue will show Rain before she activates and then the third issue will show Ruin before he activates. So the first three issues, you’ll still see Eric and Rain come together, and you’ll see what happens to Dog, the A.I. system that comes out of the game. You’ll see them come together to try to get to Ruin, the protagonist, they want to get to him before he comes over to the real world because they were never able to beat him in the video game. There’s a big concern that if they couldn’t beat him there and he got an upgrade and he came here, what would happen to them and what would happen to the world. Their mission is they have to come together to get to him before he activates.

I wanted to take time with the first three issues before everything and everybody is in the world and everything comes to this nuclear holocaust situation I wanted to really address the background. I don’t like the perfect hero, to me there’s nothing more interesting than a young person with a broken moral compass. Those situations are interesting when you have somebody and you see their background and you see what that may or may not influence them to do. These aren’t characters that are there to do the right thing. When he first comes out of the game in issue two he’s stealing cars.

BSR: I appreciate you guys taking time to talk with me.

Issue number one of “Axcend” will be in stores October 7.

Not only does his debut issue of the new comic series “All-New Hawkeye” hit comic racks, so too does the first issue of his latest (of an ever growing quiver) creator-owned comic series, “Descender.” And for those readers who felt Lemire’s take on Marvel’s purple vesting archer wasn’t Lemire enough – meaning it wasn’t as unconventional as some of his creator-owned works (e.g. “Trillium” and “Sweet Tooth”) – “Descender” #1 serves up a full-helping of the weird sci-fi that keep fans asking for seconds.

The issue begins with a quick narrative explication of the title’s setting: The Planet Nirata, the technological and cultural hub of an alliance of nine planets. Dustin Nguyen illustrates a world that could act as the conceptual designs for a new Tomorrowland. His minimal use of colors creates a world that is bright and clean. The coloring of the book becomes instantly heavier once the Harvesters – Galactus-sized robots – appear.

"Descender" #1

The actions of these Harvesters turn biological beings towards anti-robot fanaticism and ultimately a robot genocide. The answer to retaliating against the Harvesters lies in Tim-21, a child-companion android and the last of his kind.

The universe of “Descender” has obviously been well thought out. Lemire’s blog has interviews posted in which he explains the depths that he’s explored this universe. He has also expressed what a relief it is to freely explore the extent of his universe and only have to answer to Ngyuen. This is an interesting point to focus in on, as just a couple of months ago, I made mention of Lemire’s “Teen Titans: Earth One” graphic novel suffering from heavy-handed editorial.

"Descender" #1

While “Descender” #1 is just a glimpse of what is to be a space epic, the comic and entertainment industry’s elite have already weighed in on the title’s quality:

“Jeff Lemire has dreamt up an emotional, imaginative new universe, lavishly brought to life by the great Dustin Nguyen. I can’t wait to see where they take TIM-21 next.”  – Brian K. Vaughan, “Saga”

“I am already rooting for poor Tim, theorizing about the origin of the Harvesters and gripping the cross bar of the roller-coaster begging for another ride.”– Damon Lindelof- co- creator of “Lost”

Ngyuen uses his unique style to change a world from stream-lined and immaculate to chaotic and cankered. His coloring is perfect for the galactic-space landscape where much of the series is sure to take place. Nguen’s take on a ghost mining colony on an uninhabited moon is the perfect blend of isolation from Duncan Jones’ film “Moon” and the unsettling stillness from Paul W.S. Anderson’s film “Event Horizon.” All the while readers will see panels full of intelligently designed robots and both sexy and nightmarish aliens.

"Descender" #1

“Descender” #1 earns a 9 out of 10. Upon first reading I felt that Lemire was packing too much of a universe into one issue – albeit an over-sized 30 page issue. Though upon a second, more thorough reading, what Lemire leaves left out of narration and dialogue, Ngyuen fills in with illustration. The illustration is so fitting for the story that the elements conveyed (like the pre and post Harvester planet) are easily taken for granted. While there is a fair amount of telling (and not showing) in narration boxes and an explicative computer, it doesn’t pull the reader out of the story.

The “Descender” series is going to be a huge hit. Sony Pictures Entertainment has already announced its acquisition of the feature film rights to the series a full month before the first issue even hit comic book shops. And apparently, there were other studios fighting for the rights.

“It was a competitive situation for ‘Descender,’ and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” Lemire and Nguyen said in a statement. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”

Be sure to get in on this series early, as “Descender” #1 will sell out quickly. Two covers are available to the public: one by Nguyen and one by Lemire.

Read this comic if you enjoy the works of Issac Asimov, Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element,” and/or Star Trek.

FIVE & THREE: My Favorite Things In Comics This Week

Hey there, this is Androidika, hijacking your weekly dose of cool covers and panels this week! However, don’t fret, Zendobot will be back next week! Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff!

First up in our covers this week is the newest book from J. Michael Straczynski, “Apocalypse Al.” And why would I pick this? Ryan freakin’ Sook! Ryan Sook has been one of my favorite artists for a long time, and he never fails to impress me. I mean seriously, this guy never does bad work!

Apocalypse Al #1 Sook Cover

The next cover we head on over to is “Judge Dredd: Mega City Two #2,” and its sheer awesomeness. It’s a cover sporting a paper doll Dredd in his tighty-whiteys, along with various costumes! Although this bot would advise using a photocopier if you want to make some dolls so you don’t ruin your comic!

Judge Dredd: Mega City Two #2 Cover

Moving on, I decided to throw Sara Pichelli’s cover for “Ms. Marvel” #1 into the mix. At its core, it’s just a basic shot of the new Ms Marvel’s torso, but something about it just makes me really like it! As a side note, there is not one thing wrong with this book! If you want a good read and you see it in your shop you owe it to yourself to pick it up!

Ms Marvel #1 Cover

The cover to “The Punisher” #1 was cool to me because it shows the Punisher in his new home, L.A. … or at least over a map of his home! Mitch Gerads has a gritty feel to his covers and interiors that just fits this book so well! It’s no wonder Marvel hired the writer/artist team from Image’s black-ops book, “The Activity,” to explore the dark world that is “The Punisher.”

Punisher #1 Cover

And last, but certainly not least, for the covers this week, is “Turok: Dinosaur Hunter” #1! I’ve never really gotten into Turok before, but I do love me some dinosaurs. This one grabbed me because I saw the title character trying to fend off five raptors with just a bow, and it just gave me a feeling of “Oh, shit!” Also, I like dinosaurs!

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1 Cover

The first panel in this week’s Five and Three comes from “Forever Evil” #5. For five issues now, we’ve heard about something destroying the Crime Syndicate’s Earth, and that being the reason for them coming to take over “our” Earth. Well it seems that same being, Catastrophe, or whatever, is headed to the main DC Earth. Could it be the cracks in time the Silence caused? Or possibly the Nexus from “Star Trek: Generations?” Whatever it is, it sure looks like we’ll see next issue!

Forever Evil #5 Splash

It was hard not to choose every page and panel from “Ms. Marvel” #1. Adrian Alphona is nothing short of amazing, and has been since “Runaways.” Here we have a beautiful shot from a dream sequence our new hero experiences, in which she sees the heroes she admires and idolizes. I don’t want to short change the colorist here. Ian Herring’s colors are simply breathtaking! You really should get this book! Every page is just as pretty as this!

And last, but certainly not least, is my favorite panel of the week. “Superior Foes of Spider-Man” has been hilarious from the start, and it only gets funnier with every issue. In this panel from “Superior Foes of Spider-Man” #8, drawn by the talented Steve Lieber, we see the head of Silvermane berating Shocker for his crappy apartment. It’s not only the dialogue that cracks me up, but it’s the look of sadness you can see on Shocker’s face through his mask!

Sad Shocker is sad

And there you have it! Another edition of Five & Three! Dont worry, next week Zendobot will be back. Until then, if you wanna read some of his past Five & Three columns, then start here with last weeks! Don’t like what I picked? Then let me know on twitter, @MrMiah, what your picks in covers and panels were this week. Or if you missed Zendobot’s picks send him a tweet letting him know, @MarkAvo. Until next week, have fun and read more funny books!

COMICS REVIEW: Pretty Deadly #1

I enjoy comics. Often I enjoy good comics. Occasionally I have enjoyed a great comic. It is a rare event for me though, to read that special comic that has moved me. Reading to oneself is a solitary activity. When a book connects you to the artist – when you can feel the emotion that was put into a story and you become charged by that emotion – that is an experience you’ll always remember. It’s also one that will compel you to share that story with others. Pretty Deadly compelled me to tell you to pick up a copy of issue #1 on Wednesday because it is that kind of special story. One told by phenomenally talented storytellers Kelly Sue DeConnick, Emma Rios, and Jordie Bellaire.

The story is a Western tale with some great mystical elements thrown in with a carefully subtle measure. There could be magic, but this story could also just be about good old fashioned revenge. What is clear, is that the way in which the story is told could be a magical thing in itself. The book mixes story dialogue with poetry. As the story unfolds, an old fashioned kind of comic on a tapestry is unrolled. The prime characters begin to tell the story of the tapestry as the comic narrative deftly weaves through the panels. Once the telling of the tapestry is over, and the travelling story tellers are paid for their tale, they continue on through rest of the comic with Old West action hot on their heels in the form of Ginny, the daughter of Death.

The art is the kind that you drink in and then put the book down feeling refreshed.

That tone of writing and art is changed throughout the book by the ever wonderful coloring of Jordie Bellaire. DeConnick and Rios couldn’t have picked a better colorist to work with. Rios’s pencils are soft but at times hurried. Her pencils are never lazy though. Rios matches DeConnicks words in a pace that pushes the story forward when necessary, but slows it down again so you don’t read too quickly. The art is the kind that you drink in and then put the book down feeling refreshed.

Kelly Sue DeConnick’s words are what moved me. Although the art of Pretty Deadly was spectacular, it was the heart of the book and the afterword that confirmed my interpretation of the story they’re telling. Pretty Deadly #1 ends with a set of short stories about events that happened to DeConnick in different parts of her past. Those events, tied together, are like the feathers of the wings that helped this book to fly. We’ve all had an experience in our past where we felt like we were falling. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have support, and are lifted through the experience. Other times falling down can be the lesson. I’m looking forward to finding out which one of those experiences this book will take me down.

COMICS: Ryan Ottley Variant for Manifest Destiny #1

Image announced earlier today that Invincible artist, Ryan Ottley, will be drawing a special variant cover of the new comic Manifest Destiny from Image Comics and Skybound. Ryan’s cover will appear as a variant to the Issue #1 cover of the new ongoing series by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts. The image Big Shiny Robot was given indicates that it isn’t the final image but Ryan Ottley recently tweeted a photo that looks nearly identical to the one in the Image press release. For more information, here is that press release followed by Ottley’s cover.

Image Comics and Skybound are excited to announce that the first issue of MANIFEST DESTINY, the new ongoing series by Chris Dingess (writer TV’s Being Human) and Matthew Roberts (Battlepope), will receive a special variant cover (SEP138206) by INVINCIBLE artist Ryan Ottley.

Skybound’s newest original series follows Lewis & Clark’s historic expedition to explore America, only for them to uncover the monsters of the uncharted frontier. With a gripping story by Dingess and breakout art by Roberts and colorist Owen Genii (GLORY), this series joins the ranks of genre boundary-pushing comics like GHOSTED and CLONE published by Robert Kirkman’s Image Comics imprint, Skybound.

Final orders for the variant cover are due TODAY, Monday, October 21, so retailers and readers alike should get their orders in now! MANIFEST DESTINY #1 can be ordered with the Diamond Code: SEP130486 and the Ryan Ottley variant cover of MANIFEST DESTINY #1 can be ordered with the Diamond Code: SEP138206

COMICS: Egos, More Creator Owned Sci-Fi From Image

Image Comics announced Friday that they will be publishing another creator owned title this January. Egos is a sci-fi story that sounds like a meta-textual take on Galactus. The writer, Stuart Moore, has a long history with the comics industry. Moore has been a writer of many paper-back versions of comics stories like Civil War, runs on Namor and Firestorm, as well as being an editor on modern classics such as Preacher. The co-creator Gus Storms is the artist on Egos. His history is as a contemporary comic book artist has been closely tied to sci-fi books. His style is almost a combination of Tony Moore and Nick Pitarra with a little Matt Hollingsworth, but when you see his work you’ll know his style is clearly his own.

The timing of the release of this new book is similar to their announcement earlier last week about Kirkman and  Azaceta’s new horror project Outcast. Image continues to be the place for creators. Their #WhatsNext campaign really does make one wonder, what’s next? If you’re looking for more information for Egos be sure to pick up Saga #15 for a preview at the end of that book. You can pre-order Egos #1 now with an expected publication date of January 15, 2014. Until then, check out some wonderful preview art by Gus Storms and what other creators in the industry are saying about Egos.

“I’ve known Stuart Moore since his days at Vertigo, and I always thought he was one of the very smartest minds in our industry. I’m delighted that he’s writing a new book for my friends at Image, especially because EGOs is his best story yet.”
-Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, The Private Eye)

“Stuart Moore was one of comics’ greatest editors precisely because he’s a great writer. Everything he writes demands attention.”
-Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary)

“With EGOs, Stuart Moore’s thoughtful writing style really comes into its own. I look forward to following this one as it develops—very highly recommended.”
-Garth Ennis (Preacher, Fury MAX)

“EGOs sets up house at the junction of superhero stories and big-ideas sci-fi—then trashes the junction and builds its own huge, insane theme park.”
-Mike Carey (The Unwritten, Lucifer)

COMICS: Rocket Girl Issue 1

Rocket Girl #1 is not Ameri-Manga but, with a teenage super-heroine, a futuristic setting, and time travel, it feels very close to it. The story is about a 15 year old cop named DaYoung Johansson from a futuristic New York set in 2013. This version of New York has flying cars, Jet Packs, super robots and a teenage police force. She must travel back in time to the year 1986 to save the future which just happens to be her present. The destructive Quintum Mechanics Corporation, shrouded in mystery, uses politics to cement their position and their vision of the present. As she investigates Quintum Mechanics in the past she discovers a large conspiracy about the place she came from – the place she went back in time to protect. That future New York shouldn’t exist at all!

The creative team of Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare, have brought their book from a successfully funded Kickstarter project to Image comics. Image is, to the eyes of the industry, the home of creator owned. Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare are working with Image to introduce us to Rocket Girl’s world and characters. After the first five issue arc they plan on turning Rocket Girl into another creator owned ongoing series for Image Comics creator owned quiver.

Amy Reeder’s future New York reminds me of a world similar to the one Marcos Martin has brought to life in Private Eye. The colors are so vibrant and full of pop that when you visit New York from 1986 you’ll think a mutant turtle might make a guest appearance. The art is terrific and the young beauty that the lead character DaYoung has makes for an enjoyable comics experience. Take a look for yourself at the preview pages below and then let me know what you think in the comments or via Twitter @MarkAvo.

Tonight is The Walking Dead!

Tonight is the night you’ve all been waiting for, the return of The Walking Dead.

The season premiere launches and will bring us, hopefully, to the prison which we were so fiendishly teased with at the end of the last season.

This is the first season with no input from show creator Frank Darabont, so we’ll see how well the show holds up. I’m hoping it’ll all turn out just fine. Judging by the trailer, it’s going to be torture to watch, but in a good way.

There are plenty of things to be excited for. The biggest things would probably be the prison, Michonne, the Governor, and the return of Merle Dixon.

It’s going to be agony of the highest order, but isn’t that what The Walking Dead is all about?

Hopefully, those of you local to Salt Lake City will be able to join us at Brewvies Cinema Pub to watch the premiere episode (and each of those thereafter) on the big screen.

As a bonus for readers of Big Shiny Robot!, here’s a zombie story I wrote and Marcus (the preeminent comedian) recorded. If you like it, grab the whole book it comes from.

The entire audio book should be available by the end of the month.

In the meantime, enjoy:
