MACHINIMA: ‘Titanfall Dropouts’

Machinima launched another original series based around the worlds most popular shooter of all time “Titanfall.” If you haven’t taken time out of your life to play this unrelenting hype monster than you truly are doing it wrong. This series is based around the antics of the different people assisting with the deployment of Titans. It’s pretty smart stuff, check it out below!

FAKE TRAILER: Aubrey Plaza Stars in “Daria:The Movie”

I led with the “fake” bit so no one got too excited and then super let-down. This is a fake trailer, but College Humor should probably just go ahead and make this a thing. I was in high school in the 1990’s in a school that was literally in the middle of cornfields. For me and many others who were surrounded by folks who didn’t get us, Daria was a queen. And since Aubrey Plaza’s deadpan, evil introverts are making “un-cool” the new cool, this is just a perfect fit. This is damn funny.

WOLVERINE: The Musical

What a timely release this is! And it’s got every thing a comics/puppet/broadway nerd like me loves: tiny Canadian-Australian killing machines, maribou hair, and a Multiple Man chorus.

Let me say that again: Multiple. Man. Chorus.

STAR WARS VII: Karen Gillan Reportedly Joining Cast

This seems to be the most rumour-y, but Karen Gillan, Amy Pond of Doctor Who fame and self-professed Star Wars fan got cornered by a reporter at an event. After asking, inevitably, about her involvement with the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special (which she denied involvement in), he set his sights to Star Wars, asking if she would take a part in the new trilogy.

To which she responded in the most vaguely positive way she could:

“Actually,” Gillan told The HypeMachine, “I’m not sure how much I can say about that at this point or not. I’m in talks, but the official word is no comment, I think.”

I can’t tell what part EU fans are going to assume she’d be playing first: Mara Jade or Jaina Solo.

I’m still doubtful that we’re getting any EU characters in the sequel trilogy, but I’ll admit, if they brought Karen Gillan in to play either of those parts I’d be extremely happy.

She did fantastic work on Doctor Who and is as adorable as they come, I think Star Wars fans would accept her in the fandom with open arms. And it wouldn’t be the first Doctor Who/Star Wars cross over, either. Julian “General Veers” Glover was in an excellent arc of episodes as a badguy facing off against Tom Baker and David Tenant, the 10th Doctor himself, played a droid on The Clone Wars.

And with JJ Abrams at the helm, anything is possible.

Star Wars: Episode VII hits movie theatre screens in 2015.

Readers of Big Shiny Robot! will hit their screens (or slap their foreheads) when they realize the date of this post.

Spider-Man Memes, As Read By The Spectacular Josh Keaton

If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time, you’re familiar with memes. Everything from creepy girlfriends to various feline shenanigans are available for us to peruse and laugh along with. One of our favorite meme themes here at BSR are the ones that showcase the fondly remembered (but also poorly animated and sometimes completely crazy) 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. It was quite a treat then to randomly find a YouTube video where Josh Keaton, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man from the excellent, cancelled before its time Spectacular Spider-Man. We just had to share it. While it could be considered NSFW, all naughty language is bleeped out, so no worries.

I don’t care who you are, that’s pretty great right there. Our only hope is that the Vol. 1 in the title means there is more of this to come, because this is gold. Now, if we can convince the likes of Neil Patrick HarrisChristopher Daniel Barnes, Dan Gilvezan, and Rino Romano to follow suit, we can have a Spidey voice actor meme showdown! Stranger things have happened, right?

VIDEO: Gollum Sings Les Miserables

Considering the fact that anyone doing a halfway decent Gollum impression is guaranteed to make me laugh, this might just be one of the best things I’ve seen on the internet.  It’s starting to go viral, so this is your chance to say you saw it first!

Please to enjoy.

PODCAST: September Big Shiny Podcast

This Month’s Podcast Features:

Zombietron (Tom), Kill-tacular-tron (Lucas), Arse-Bot (Tyson), Mexicus Prime (Jimmy), and Vagatron (Kiley)

Generally on this podcast we have Kill Tacular Tron and Vagatron present to keep the other robots in line. Sure, this podcast is still filled with foul language and inappropriate jokes each month – but trust us, it’s pretty tame. This month, Kill Tacular Tron was ill and unable to make it and Vagatron had to rush off to the hospital to see his Creator (“mom”). Luckily, Vagatron’s creator is going to be fine and all of us here wish her the best and a speedy recovery!

However, this left Zombietron, Mexicus Prime and Arse-bot up to their own devices and unsupervised. You’ve been warned.

This month the short-staffed BSPC crew cover topics such as why Mexicus Prime almost caused an international incident with Japan in the men’s bathroom of an airport, our favorite movies from the Summer movie season, ABC’s “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot, Avengers 2, DareDevil on the big screen, how we squeeze our geekiness into our busy daily lives, the usual smattering of comics and video games, and of course – all of this with a bunch of dicking around and swears.

Next month the BSPC crew will be back to full strength along with two kick-ass guests, so be sure to subscribe on iTunes to get your dose of the Big Shiny Podcast! each and every month (for better or worse)!

Thanks for listening and watch for a new episode every month! Also be sure to check out the Big Shiny Girlcast, chock full of geeky girl goodness! If you like what you hear, rate the Big Shiny Robot Podcast Family on iTunes!

MAD Magazines Election Hell

This originally appeared on The Huffington Post…

The usual gang of idiots over at MAD Magazine decided to throw their hat in the ring of politics once more and for reasons still beyond me they asked me to bring you the cover of the new issue (hitting later in the week). I told them no one would care, but they were insistent. And sent a pair of very persuasive…gentlemen…to speak to me about it and we came to an understanding.

MAD has a long and storied history of covering elections with their own brand of humour. (Can you call what MAD does humour? Does the “u” I put it in there make it seem too sophisticated for them?) We’ve unveiled quite a bit of their political coverage over the years for you in this very space. Remember when they named the dumbest person of 2008? I never thought the 2012 election would bring us people that are actually dumber than those from ’08… But we’re getting sidetracked…

Without further ado, here’s the cover of the newest MAD Magazine:

Alfred E. Neuman is faced with a dire choice, the same choice we’re all afflicted by. And check back next week, when we’ll have an exclusive look at some of the actual political coverage of the magazine.

Bryan Young is the editor of the geek news site Big Shiny Robot! and the author of Operation: Montauk.

PODCAST: July Big Shiny Podcast

This Month’s Podcast Features:

Zombietron (Tom), Arse-Bot (Tyson), Vagatron (Kiley), Mexicus Prime (Jimmy), and Kill-tacular-tron (Lucas), and special guest, Nate!

It’s a little later than usual, but the July Big Shiny Podcast is here.

This month we spend an ample amount of time breaking down The Amazing Spider-Man; what we liked, what we Kiley didn’t like.

After geeking out for the first half over Spider-Man, we move on to Spider-Men in talking about comic books. Also, Joker is returning the the DCU in the New 52, Before Watchmen is turning out to actually be pretty good, and the Black Lanterns are back!

The Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut dropped a few weeks back and Arse-bot breaks down what’s good about it, and what is still lacking – this of course spurs the same debate for the third time between him and Zombietron . . .

To wrap things up, the day Kill-tacular-tron and Arse-bot have been waiting for is finally here! New TMNT toys! We break down what’s great about the figures, along with a few gripes (you can also check out Arse-bot’s review of the figures). Hot Toys has announced a handful of new figures to coincide with the release ofThe Dark Knight Rises and Kill-tacular-tron tells us which figures are going to break his bank.

Join us next month as we chat about The Dark Knight Rises and other geeky goodness!

Thanks for listening and watch for a new episode every month! Also be sure to check out the Big Shiny Girlcast, chock full of geeky girl goodness! If you like what you hear, rate the Big Shiny Robot Podcast Family on iTunes!

Is The Avengers Actually A “Remake”?

I, like many of you, are very excited for the impending May 4th release of Marvel Studios The Avengers. What you may be surprised to know though, is that the silver screen epic is actually a remake! Not only that, but this is the 2nd time it has been remade! While the original movies are lost to time due to not being available on home video, thanks to the internet we can at least see the trailers for these epic films. First, the movie that started it all: 1952’s The Avengers!

-fCTokuOU_E

The most amazing thing about this film, aside from the absolutely dead-on Hulk and cameos by no less than 18 Marvel characters is the fact that the film debuted 9 years before the dawn of Marvel Comics! How is such a thing possible? I’ll get to that, but first, here’s the campy made-for-TV remake from 1978: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Man I swear, KISS was freaking everywhere in the late 70’s. Honestly I can’t say I’m too fond of this movie. Lou Ferrigno is still great as the Hulk, and this is was the best screen depiction of Tony Stark until Robert Downey Jr. However, I can’t abide by Reb Brown’s Captain America spending half the movie on a motorcycle like a low-grade Evel Knievel. Also, who’s idea was it to make Thor a beer-swilling viking? Thankfully, the new movie looks to erase the above movie’s bad memories, even if they aren’t using Skrulls this time out.

In all seriousness, these two clips are of course very clever fan-made YouTube offerings, but how cool would it be if they really existed? Well, the 50’s one anyway. Speaking of that masterpiece, the author actually has an annotated video to show all the cameos you may have missed. It’s pretty amazing how flawless it all looks.
